This new city design has led to the conceptualisation of an effective way to reconfigure our urban spaces, and economic centres, along three key functional economic corridors,” Gungubele said. These corridors are the Thami Mnyele corridor which concentrates development in a straight line from Tembisa to Vosloorus including all surrounding areas along the corridor. The main river for economic development in this corridor is high level roads and transport infrastructure. OR Tambo Aerotropolis core focuses development along the triangle formed by Kempton Park, Boksburg and Germiston, including Edenvale and Benoni. This corridor leverages on creative, gateway trade, technology research and development, and logistics sectors. The Thelle Mogoerane corridor runs from Vosloorus to Nigel including developments such as the Carnival Junction and OR Tambo inland port aimed at unlocking the logistic potential of the City. The developments in this area will have mixed land uses that include industry as well as human settlements located nearby. The city is taking a new approach to densify the provision of houses through building high rise residential units including flats for both RDP, rental and or buying through bank loans. The Brakpan old location development, for instance, would have yielded 2500 units but will now give us 11 598 units as part of this policy. “This new approach will lead to a quantum leap in housing development in Ekurhuleni enabling us to efficiently accommodate more people and provide more livable human settlements with a full basket of services and social amenities such as schools, clinics and public transport,” Mayor Gungubele said. The Mayor also touched on the service delivery programme for the past five years which saw all townships now having their own fire station; the rollout of free WiFi to 900 hotspots; introduction of e-Health in 40 clinics to shorten waiting time and remove the need to open files if your details are on the system; as well as investing over R2.7 billion in roads and storm water infrastructure. The call centre continues to be a single point of contact for residents to report service interruptions; the Harambee bus is on track to roll out from July in Tembisa, our CDBs are kept clean through the Inner City Night Cleaning programme and clean neighbourhood Fridays continue; and Ekurhuleni continues to have clean water attaining the Blue Drop status once again. He said the work done in the last five years in improving the management of its finances, reporting on service delivery and compliance to legislation was rewarded by the two back-to-back clean audits. THE City of Ekurhuleni has received the highest investment grade rating from Moody’s Investors Services affirming the prudent manage-ment of the metro’s finances.

Moody’s placed Ekurhuleni at Aaa.za/Prime-1 national scale rating, a four notch upgrade from a previous rating of A1.za/Prime-1. The City also received a global scale rating of Baa2/Prime-2. The good credit profile, in terms of Moody’s means that Ekurhuleni has an “extremely strong” capacity to meet its financial commitments.

This allows the City to raise debt at favourable rates putting less onerous debt repayment costs on residents. “This rating makes it easier for the City to compete in the international bond markets as well as other project finance and investment opportunities to address infrastructure funding,” said City manager Mr Khaya Ngema.

Ngema notes that the rating reflects the City’s prudent financial management which also saw it awarded two consecutive clean audits. Ekurhuleni is rated at the high end of the range of South African Municipalities. The Municipal debt and debit service levels are relatively lower than the median of rated metropolitan municipalities.

“EMM reflects its relatively large economic base, strong liquidity and traditionally conservative approach to financial management. However, the ratings also reflect the challenges associated with growing, albeit moderate, debt levels,” said Moody’s in its report. It notes the City’s diverse and resilient industrial base stretching from Springs to Wadeville and Isando and hosting world class manufacturers of glass, breakfast cereal and steel.

Hi Kasie peopleWe are back with our third edition and things are really beginning to take shape with this publication, Kasie Focus. We are excited about the warm welcome by the city of Ekurhuleni Municipality as the new kid in the block, and as part of our appreciate to them (Ekurhuleni Municipality) we have run a front page on them about their plans to grow their towns and townships in their municipalities (also see Page 2).

In this edition, as we promised, we also run part 2 story on Page 3 about the history of Alexandra which we kick-started in our first

edition two months. We also bring to you Tebogo Motshwene on Page 6, the businessman who was born and bred in Pimvile (Soweto) who has his heart on helping the youth who want to start their own businesses.

On Sports (Back Page) we focus on the forthcoming National First Division Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs which will decide as to which clubs will be promoted to the Absa Premiership and as to which ones will be relegated from the same league to the National First Division.

Classes at Orlando High School in Soweto have been suspended for Friday. Learners went on the rampage on Thursday, vandalising the entire administration block, demanding the removal of the principal.

They accuse the principal of mistreating them and victimising teachers. Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the school on Friday morning. He met the School Governing Body (SGB), district officials and teacher representatives.

Learners say the principal is rude and dismissive and never listens to their concerns. On Thursday, the learners locked the gates, blocking access to the school premises.

They want the principal dismissed for suspending one of their teachers.

The principal is said to have a violent history, having reportedly punched a teacher before he was moved to this school.

The SGB and teacher representatives have recommended that he be redeployed somewhere else.

MEC Lesufi says he'll continue with the consultation process before making a decision on the way forward on Monday.

THE riot that started in Soweto in June 1976 quickly spread to other areas such as Alexandra, where 19 people were killed. As a consequence of these riots, evictions, forced removals and expropriation of black properties were stopped; urban blacks were no longer regarded as temporary residents and their permanent status was recognised.

Finally, in 1982, Alexandra was given the official status of a residential area and the then Alexandra liaison committee, led by Rev Buti, was instituted to run the township. In 1980 a "Master Plan" for Alexandra was introduced, whose aim was to transform Alexandra into a "Garden City" with a completely new layout. However, only a small part of this plan was actually ever implemented; the execution of the "Master Plan" was permanently stopped by the violent "Alex Six Days" uprising in February 1986.

The uprising resulted from an attack by the security forces on a funeral in the township. 40 people were killed. The Alexan-dra Township Committee, led by trade unionist Moses Mayekiso, were arrested and beaten. Mayekiso was only released following a strike by metal workers. By May the council started collapsing and the councillors resigned which saw the emergence of street committees and peoples' courts. After the imposition of the nationwide state of emergency in June, the Defence Force moved in to keep the peace.

In its place, the government introduced the "Urban Renewal Plan" as part of its strategy during the state of emergency. However, this plan led to considerable demolitions, disrup-tions and displacement in the community as well as two treason trials involving 13 leaders of Alexandra.

This, combined with the considerable number of additional people moving into Alexandra during this time, led to a new area called the "East Bank" being built. Because of the insufficient capacity and difficult maintenance of the newly built infrastructure, the situation quickly deteriorated and thus the "Urban Renewal Plan" was shelved in 1990.

During the communal and political conflicts that took place in the 1991–1992 period, many people were killed, injured or displaced. This led to several peace initiatives, which were greatly assisted by the first fully democratic South African elections in April 1994.

Post-2000To assist in renewing and uplift the community, the Alexandra Renewal Project was launched in 2000. The project has caused clashes between residents and companies, including SA Waste Holding (Pty) Ltd, a waste disposal company based in nearby Marlboro.

Approximately 3,000 houses have been built for relocation purposes to date. In August 2006 American business students conducted a photography project with 190 of the youth of Alexandra. It resulted in a book, alexandra: our view of ekasi. In June/July 2008 the grassroots photographic project Shoot-ing Jozi inspired by the Academy award winning documenta-ry Born into Brothels took place in Alexandra with local community members.

In May 2008 a series of xenophobic attacks that took place throughout South Africa started in Alexandra Township, due to a large amount of foreigners (mainly Zimbabweans) living there. South Africans living in Alexandra Township said they were tired of foreigners taking their jobs.

Xenophobic attacks showed its ugly face again in last year where in one Emmanuel Sithole, a Mozambique national was stabbed to death in full view of community members in Alexandra.

Soweto born-and-bred go-getter, now Marketing Trailblazer!

HAVING worked with some of Africa's leading brands, advertising specialist Tebogo Motshwene seriously believes that marketing success lies in keeping messaging authentic and relevant.

Motshwene who was born and bred in Pimville, Soweto says Brand managers should develop messages that relate to the brand's target market. Messaging of a brand aimed at a black consumer market, for example, must not only be culturally relevant, but look, feel and sound authentic if it is to succeed.

After graduating from the AAA School of Advertising, Motshwene began his advertising career at Herdbuoys McCann-Erickson as a media implementation planner. His portfolio included Peoples' Bank and MasterCard. Intrigued by the banking sector, he became a marketing assistant at Standard Bank South Africa helping oversee marketing campaigns and liaising with advertising agencies doing work for the bank.

"This helped me understand how to manage an advertising campaign successfully and how to ensure that a brand image was correctly positioned," he said. He became a production manager in the bank's customer acquisition and retention division, managing the bank's newly-branded Bluebean card (re-branded from Barclaycard) and being involved with the launch of its co-branded cards with Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, SA Home Loans and MTN.

This helped Motshwene sharpen not only his marketing skills, but also his budgeting acumen when he was given the added responsibility of managing his division's budget and ensuring compliance with the new National Credit Act. To this, he had to add sponsorship management after the bank signed agreements with some of the country's leading brands such as Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, the Cricket SA team, Twenty20, Pro20, Joy of Jazz, Grahamstown Jazz Festival, National Arts Festival and Afcon, CAF (Pan Africa).

He found himself involved with the intricacies of integrating marketing communications with advertising, media standards, and group marketing. At the same time, he was responsible for building and managing relationships between the bank, its sponsored clients and its core stakeholders in advertising, media agencies, business units and service providers.

He was then transferred to group marketingfor Standard Bank's operations across Africa, travelling to, and providing marketing support in, Nigeria, Angola, Lesotho, Botswana, Mozambique, Mauritius, DRC, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

His meteoric career within Standard Bank finally came to an end after nine heady years. He had decided he was ready to go it alone, launching Brandhead, a strategic marketing communications agency focusing on the black consumer market, in 2012.

"Our aim was to develop our innovative brand and

consumer connections with our unique eKasi insights," he says. That they are also specialists in eKasi-oriented town-ship outdoor media space is evident from the new style billboards that have become part of the cityscape.

Brandhead leads a product innovation from the incubator until it becomes a recognisable brand through developing campaigns that speak directly to consumers' culture and experience. "We start with research, because we understand that the black consumer market is diverse, and then bring that through into our product development," he explains.

An unashamed fan of eKasi flavour, Motshwene believes Brandhead infuses the present advertising scene with an authentic township energy that stems from both his own extensive experience with that of his young, hand-selected, highly-creative employees. What really sets Brandhead apart, he feels, is his extensive knowledge of creating, managing and maintaining a brand, along with his business and leadership experience gained in promoting and publicising multi-dimensioned brands at a high level."This differentiates us from other activations companies, in that, we create emotional and memorable engagements and experiences that seek to deliver measurable business results for brands, targeted at the black consumer market," says Motshwene.

"With our knowledge and understanding of eKasi, we are able to use our research, connections, platforms and networks to develop marketing and communication solutions and campaigns that aim to drive and deliver business results for a brand."

Since its establishment, Brandhead has already started making a wide stride in its business, providing activations and media services to key organisations, such as Nedbank, City of Johannesburg, Rea Vaya and Borstol. But its progress has not been limited to securing business deals. Motshwene wants to ensure that Brandhead assumes its social responsibility by not only being a good corporate citizen, but also contributing to the general well-being of society.

To this end, Motshwene supports Compass, the abbreviation for Community Provision & Social Services that provide social services through its own registered social workers and trained, qualified teachers and caregivers for children within its care to ensure the best level of education and care-giving.Motshwene concludes:

IT will be a sad moment when one of the three clubs between Maritzburg United, University of Pretoria and Jomo Cosmos will not be counted among clubs vying for the National First Division (NFD) Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs which kicks off on May 25, WRITES NAKAMPE LEKWADU.

The Premier Soccer League has confirmed dates for the three-clubs play-offs which will involve two clubs from the NFD and one from the Absa Premiership which will finish their league program on the 15th position. The play-offs will take place between May 25 and June 22.

The play offs starts on May 25 with the NFD clubs which finishes the season second and third positions taking each other position in the first leg.

With Polokane City having avoided the chop after their 2-2 all draw against SuperSport United, it remain to be seen as to which club will manage to avoid relegation by finishing on the 14th position while the other two sides will also have to

battle for straight relegation by finishing on the 15th position which will see them battle to maintain their status via these play-offs.

Currently Cosmos are on the 14th position with 25 points, followed by University of Pretoria on 15th with 21 points while Maritzburg are on the 16th with 21 points with only two matches to go for all the clubs. On the other hand, it is also not clear as to which clubs from the NFD nor in from Absa Premiership will be involved in these play-offs as the battle for promotion, second and third position is still and for avoiding relegation is still on in both the two divisions.

In the NFD, Baroka are still on top of the log with 59 points and they are only three points clear of second placed, Highlands Park who have bagged 56 points and both the two sides have still two matches to play before wrapping the season. In this case either Baroka or Highlands Park can win the league and gain automatic promotion.Technically, should Baroka win the league then Highlands

Park are certainly going to finish in the second position and virsa versa to that. This means clubs such as Mbombela United, Witbank Spurs (both from the province of Mpumalanga), Royal Eagles and Milano Milano United will have to battle to finish on the third position, the only position remaining in the play-offs.

United are currently third with 50 points with Spurs on the fourth position with 49 points while Eagles and Milano are fifth and sixth with 48 and 47 points respectively which means they can still go on and win their last two matches to see themselves off in the play-offs.
