Karoo News Term 3 Week 4 Wednesday 3rd August, 2016 SCHOOL FOYER MONITOR Featuring .. Angklung Performers Respect Responsibility Excellence Honesty & Fairness Tolerance & Understanding Principal’s Comments Book Week : 22nd—26th August We will be celebrating Children’s Book Week with a Book Parade on Friday 26th August at 9.10am for all of our students in Prep to Year 6. Michelle Mitchell and Sue Austin, with the assistance of the Library Captains, will be organising and presenting the parade. Seating of students on both levels of the gym will allow better vision of the students parading. Students will carry a favourite book, and may dress as their favourite character or author. There is no need to go to a lot of trouble with an outfit - keep it simple and fun. During Book Week the library will be open each lunchtime to help our students celebrate the joy of reading. Visits by Craig Smith (illustrator of the TooCool Series) and Marc McBride (illustrator of the Deltora Quest series) have been organised to speak to our students. The Book Week theme for this year is ‘Australia! Story Country’ and the short-listed books are on display in the library. Pop in and have a look at these books, and browse and share with your children the wonderful entire collection in the library. Framework for Improving School Organisation The Department of Education has established a framework for improving schools (FISO). The sections of the model include Teaching and Learning; School Climate. Each Victorian government school needs to set goals, targets and strategies based on the FISO model. Each local network of schools is now working in collaborative teams to build strategies which promote learning and student engagement. One of Karoo’s focus is to be enhancing Student Voice and Agency. Research indicates that students can produce educationally productive questions and use these to assist their own learning and motivation to learn. The challenge for schools is to design environments where students can use such questions to build their knowledge and skills. We are working with five Knox primary schools and linking into community agencies to promote opportunities for our students to explore, develop and voice their ideas. The FISO group will investigate ways to promote the role of Junior School Council and school connection to local and state government. Working Bee We send a sincere thank you to the Year 2, 3 and 4 families who attended the Working Bee on Saturday. The very diligent group made a huge difference with a couple of hours of pruning, raking, picking up papers, clearing away weeds and debris from the fence along Kellbourne Drive. We presented each family who attended a ‘thank you’ $5 Canteen voucher. Families who attended the first Working Bee this term have also been given a voucher. Thank you to the Alexander, Badham, Gillespie and Toh families, and to Julie Macdonald and Michelle Davies for their hard work. The next Working Bee is on Saturday 13th August for Prep and Year 5s. Bring along the children and give a small amount of time to help with garden maintenance and help develop pride in our school. A canteen voucher for each family who attends! If you have sport and other commitments on a weekend and would like to contribute with weeding, pruning, raking or doing minor maintenance we would welcome your assistance at a time that suits you. Just let us know! Rowville-Lysterfield News—Karoo Year 5s Article An article by our Year 5 students appears in this month’s edition of the Rowville-Lysterfield News, outlining the City Experience Camp and giving student reflections of their time at camp. The article read in part: ‘In Term 2 Karoo Primary School’s Year 5 students had their very first City Experience Camp. It was a wonderful chance to expose students to the rich history and culture of the Melbourne CBD. For many it was the first time they had visited iconic destinations such as the State Library and the Melbourne Museum, and it was certainly rewarding to watch each of the students absorb new information and appreciate more about their own capital city.’ I encourage you all to read the article and enjoy the students’ reflections. Karoo Primary School will be holding a ‘Jeans for Genes’ Day
on Friday 12th August 2016. This is not a free dress day,
but students may wear their denim jeans with their school

Each year, Australians unite by wearing their favourite jeans and donating money or purchasing merchandise, to support genetic
research. Every dollar raised on Jeans for Genes day helps scientists at Children’s Medical Research Institute discover treatments and
cures, to give every child the opportunity to live a long and healthy life.
Most babies are born healthy, but sadly 1 in 20 children is born with a birth defect or genetic disease. On average, that’s one in every
classroom. Children’s Medical Research Institute is dedicated to finding ways to treat or prevent childhood cancer, epilepsy, birth
defects and genetic diseases in order to create brighter futures for all children including those who are with us today & those yet to
come in to this world. Many major advances in children’s health have resulted from medical research including the demise of
previously fatal illness like polio, smallpox & diphtheria so, together, we really can make a difference & give kids around the world the
opportunity for a healthy start to life. For more information, please visit www.cmri.org.au
Thank you for our school captains, Fletcher and Aimee, for taking the initiative and requesting
that the Karoo Primary School community get behind this worthy cause.
All money raised will go to Children’s Medical Research Institute—Jeans for Genes.
If you have sport or other commitments on a weekend but would still like to contribute your time helping with weeding, pruning, raking or doing minor maintenance, we would welcome
your assistance at a time that suits you. Just let us know!
