Curriculum Day Friday 24 th March Our first Curriculum Day for 2017 scheduled for Friday 24 th March will be conducted by Dr Adrian Bertolini on ‘Conversations that Build Trust’ and Dr Sheila Ferris on Building Resilience and Assisting Students with Anxiety’. These two aspects for professional learning are for all of our staff; the two presenters are highly regarded in their areas of expertise. Sheila is a psychologist who works for onPsych who provide an outstanding service to the students and families at our school. The first part of the day’s professional learning will be with Dr Bertolini on building relationships with students, families, the community and staff. The focus will be on listening and hearing – what is not said; and building mutual trust. We have invited Casual Relief staff who work at the school to participate. Out of School Hours is providing a Curriculum Day program involving a trip on Puffing Billy. CAFÉ Reading This term and next term we will be providing extra professional learning in CAFÉ Reading for new staff and those wishing to enhance their knowledge. Di Wilkinson, one of our trainers, will hold the sessions after school with a focus on: Reading mini lessons Small group reading instruction with a focus on guided reading and strategy groups OR reading journals Conferring in reading New Babies Congratulations to Lynne Lambert who has become a grandmother for the first time. Twilight Sports We enjoyed a fabulous evening with many thanks to all families for encouraging and supporting their children to have fun and enjoy being part of the school community. We value the wonderful organisation of KPA, particularly Janelle Toh, Leanne Siwes and the fabulous helpers.

Also, ‘Congratulations’ to Lachlan and Ellie who have welcomed a new brother Hudson. Best wishes to Renee and Tristan.

Gates and Fence We have had all of the gates and fences repaired. Please remind your children not to swing on the gates as the gates drop and this makes them difficult to close.

Easter Egg Raffle The Student Council and House Captains are running the Easter Egg Raffle this year and tickets were sent home last week. ENROLMENT FORMS FOR 2018 PREPS If you have a child beginning Prep in 2018, please drop into the office and collect a 2018 Enrolment form. School tours will run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30am throughout the year for any new families wishing to learn more about the school.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS AND ASSESSMENTS FOR SCHOOLS (ICAS)

Karoo is again providing the opportunity for students to sit the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). ICAS allows students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external testing situation. Each child involved will re-

ceive a Participation, Merit, Credit, Distinction or High Distinction achievement certificate and an individual report. Year 2 students can participate in the curriculum areas of English, Mathematics and Science. All curriculum areas are open to students from Year 3 to 6.

If you wish for your child to participate in one or more of the assessments, the costs and sitting dates are as follows:

Thank you to all the students, teachers and parents who helped at the Twilight Sports Carnival last night. The event could not have been held without you. Well done to the Year 6 Captains who prepared the house chants, made posters, and helped to run the events on the night - you did a great job!

Family Life Sessions—Tuesday 2nd May 2017 On Tuesday 2nd May 2017 we are offering the opportunity for families to attend one of the Family Life sessions listed below. The cost for attending one session is $20 per family or for two or more sessions $25 per family (payments via Trybooking.com only). The evening will be held in the Karoo staffroom. Books are also available for sale on the night (cash or credit card only). All bookings are through Trybooking. If you are interested in bringing your family along to one of these age-specific sessions, please log onto www.trybooking.com/PGOD.

SESSION 1 5:45-6:45pm : Body Basics (Recommended for Years 1 & 2) This session discusses different types of families, male and female differences, names of body parts, pregnancy and birth.

SESSION 2 7:00-8:00pm : Where did I come from? (Recommended for Years 3 & 4) This session discusses family relationships, male and female body similarities and differences, conception, foetal development and birth. SESSION 3 8:15-9:15pm : Preparing for Puberty (Recommended for Years 5 & 6) This session helps prepare young people and families for the physical and emotional changes of puberty. Discussion about emotional changes of puberty. Periods and sperm production are explained.

KAROO CROSS COUNTRY Well done to all the students from Years 3-6 that participated in our Karoo Cross Country on Friday. It was great to see the

community supporting all the runners around the track and giving the event a fantastic atmosphere. A very big thank you must go to the many wonderful parents/grandparents who gave up their time to help out around the course. Your assistance was greatly appreciated and the event would not have gone ahead without you. Thank you to the Karoo teachers and staff who also assisted with the successful running of the event. The school, house captains and Lachlan, Abigail and Anesshae showed wonderful leadership and enthusiasm on the day, assisting with the setting up and packing up of the course, presentation of ribbons, starting and finishing marshals, and dispensing of the water at the finish line. From the 10 year old age group and above the first 6 students in each age and gender group have earned an automatic invitation to District Cross Country. The 1st-10th results for each age and gender group are published below (in order of finishing).

There will be a presentation made at a whole school assembly to present the top 10 placegetters in each age and gender with their medal or ribbons (confirmation will be sent to each of these students to notify them as to when they will receive these prior to the assembly).

KAROO SWIMMERS AT DIVISION On Wednesday March 8th, 9 Karoo students participated in the Division Swimming Competition held at Aqua Nation in

Ringwood. They all competed to the best of their ability and enjoyed the opportunity to swim against other schools. Congratulations to Summer M and Will V for making it through to the regional competition! Will V won both the breaststroke and butterfly and Summer won her freestyle event and came second in the butterfly. A big thank you to Stevie V for stepping into our 9/10 y.o. girls freestyle relay at short notice and thank you to Annette Badham for being a fantastic marshal once again!

GIRLS FOOTY IS TAKING OFF – FREE GIRLS FOOTY AT ROWVILLE FOOTBALL CLUB Rowville Football Club has offered to pay the club fees for 20 girls who want to play footy this year. They have 10 free spots in both the U10s and U12s Girls team that are fully paid for. Rowville have their first practice match on Sunday 19th March. If there are any girls in grades 2-4 for U10s and grades 5-6 for

U12s that are interested in playing footy or want to try playing in a game of football in the upcoming practice match for free. Please call Tony Costanzo on 0409 691 969 or email at [email protected].
