Karl Hulka AIFA Director of Archaeology Qualifications PGC Architectural History (Oxon) Karl’s whole working life has been spent in archaeology and built heritage, both in the UK and abroad. He specializes in the assessment of archaeological constraints, the management of archaeological fieldwork and is responsible, alongside Jody, for the archaeological recording of standing buildings. Karl has spent over 18 years in private archaeological contracting followed by 5 years as historic building consultant before leading the Heritage Collective archaeology team. In 2015, the archaeology department was transferred to a new subsidiary, for which Karl has directorial responsibility. In addition, he is also responsible for the implementation of the company’s health and safety policies and procedures.     Karl’s whole working life has been spent in archaeology and built heritage, both in

    the UK and abroad. He specializes in the assessment of archaeological constraints,

    the management of archaeological fieldwork and is responsible, alongside Jody, for

    works for two wind farms.

    National Filling Factory N0. 9, Banbury: Built heritage assessment and subsequent rebuttal to a request

    from the LPA for scheduling of the remains of this former WWI lyddite factory.

    Belmont Road ARP Shelter, Sutton:: Historic building recording, analysis and reporting

    Northfleet Cement Works, Kent: Assessment, analysis and historic building recording of the worlds

    largest cement factory including chalk tunnels converted for use as ARP shelters.

    Sutton Coldfield Postal Depot, Birmingham: Archaeological assessment and subsequent advice

    Hamilton Lane, Scraptoft, Leicester: Archaeological assessment of land to the south of a scheduled

    monument (Hamilton Deserted Medieval Village)

    Former Harris Lebus Air Raid Shelters, Tottenham: Historic building recording and analysis of pre-cast

    WWII Trench Shelter network extending to over 2.5km.

    HMP 'The Maze' (inc. former army barracks and RAF Long Kesh), Northern Ireland: Built heritage

    assessment and record of the standing buildings for the Environment Heritage Service and Office of First

    Minister and Deputy First Minister.

    WWII Shadow Factories – Banner Lane, Humber Works and Browns Lane, Coventry; Ryton Works,

    Warwickshire and Molins Factory, High Wycombe: Historic building recording of these large factory

    sites, all originally operating or built as shadow factories but subsequently reverting or converted to

    vehicle manufacturing plants or other factories. Banner Lane contained a series of 12 aircraft engine test

    houses.

    Handley Page Factory, Park Street, Greater London: Historic Building recording of the former aircraft

    factory, ARP shelters and surviving elements of the airfield.

    Wood Wharf, Docklands: Built heritage assessment of East India Docks and Blackwall Basin (Grade I

    listed), the latter being the oldest tidal basin in the world, built 1801.

    2002 - 2004 PRE-CONSTRUCT ARCHAEOLOGY

    Senior Site Supervisor/ Historic Buildings Analyst

    Provender Mill, Faversham: Historic building recording, analysis and reporting

    Archbishop of York's' Battersea Palace, London: Supervision of large scale excavations (40+ staff) of the thremains of this 15 century moated courtyard house sister palace to the famous Whitehall Palace.

    George IV Hospital Site, Newbury Park, London: Supervision of open area archaeological excavation

    of Bronze Age/ Iron Age transitionary occupation site.

    1997 - 2002 AOC ARCHAEOLOGY

    Archaeological Site Supervisor/ Project Officer/ Health and Safety

    Officer

    Wyke Regis Excavations, Weymouth, Dorset: Site supervisor for open area excavations of prehistoric

    and roman cemetery site. The lower part of the site comprised a metalled processional trackway thought

    to have been used during the Bronze Age for funerary processions from the Portland causeway area.

    Millbank Penitentiary, Pimlico, London: Supervision of open area excavations of Jeremy Benthams

    original model prison beneath the Tate Britain Gallery. This prison was built on the panopticon system

    and involved arguably the first use of massed concrete foundations (1821). These excavations formed the

    basis of a TV series 'The Lost Buildings of Britain' co- presenting alongside Simon Thurley.

    Legend Court, Magor, Wales: Project officer for a large scale evaluation (15 linear Km) of farmland in

    support of an application for a new leisure resort. The investigations uncovered previously unknown

    funerary monuments and was carried out during the determination period with three teams of

    archaeologists.

    Blossoms Inn, London: Large scale urban excavation – joint venture with the Museum of London.

    Responsible for the initial joint venture discussions, project design and on site management of

    excavations of a key part of Roman London

    1993 - 1997 FOREIGN PROJECTS

    Excavator, Site Co-ordinator

    thInternational Merv Project, Turkmenistan: Excavation of a Sassanian House within the 5 century

    walled city of Gaya Kala, .

    Tell Brak, Syria: : Excavation of Early to Mid Uruk deposits of this multi period Tell site in north-eastern

    SyriathQusayr' Amra, Jordan: Excavations of the early 8 century Islamic Castle to the east of Amman. This

    seasons excavations focused on the occupation deposits in the former Roman style villa within the castle

    walls

    The Souks, Beirut, Lebannon: Excavations of the Ottoman remains within the Central District.

    1990 - 1993 Wessex Archaeology

    Archaeologist, Archaeological Site Supervisor

    Twyford Down (M3 Extension), Hampshire: Site supervisor for a large scale evaluation and subsequent

    excavation of chalk downland in advance of a new cutting through the down. The evaluation helped to

    determine the archaeological potential of 3 proposed routes and the excavation presented the now, not

    uncommon issue of protesters and heightened media interest.

    Westhampnet By-Pass, West Sussex: Site co-ordinator responsible for logistics of running a large scale

    excavation.

    Poundbury (Phase 1), Dorchester: Site surveyor and illustrator for the first phase of the Duchy's

    Poundbury housing development

    Stonehenge Environs Project: Site supervisor on one of the many proposed 'New Visitors Centre'

    schemes to the east of the monument. Role included liaison with MOD with regard to current

    manoeuvres and UXO discoveries

    Haxton Down, Salisbury Plain: Site surveyor and illustrator recording the effects that trials (1917) of

    one of the early Mk 1 tanks had had on the ramparts of an Iron Age hill fort.

    1988 - 1990 Exeter Museum Archaeological Field Unit

    Archaeologist, Archaeological Surveyor and Illustrator

    Roadford Reservoir Project, Devon: Initially working as a volunteer on this 3 year project to record the

    archaeological landscape of the valley prior to flooding as part of the new reservoir. Subsequently

    employed as an excavator but quickly promoted to archaeological surveyor and illustrator.
