In its 36 years as South St. Paul’s most-celebrated summer festival, Kaposia Days has become a beloved tradition for residents and visitors from around the area.

The history behind the festival’s name, however, stretches back years before the first celebration, the found-ing of the city, Minnesota’s statehood, and even the establishment of the United States.

The name comes from a band of Mdewakanton Dakota who lived along the Mississippi River in the warm months. Kaposia translates to “swift,” or “light of foot,” possibly a reference to the prowess of the band’s lacrosse players. The first village, established around 1750 on the east side of the river, was led by a succession of chiefs with the name Little Crow. The tribe relocated to the west side of the river to the site of present-day South St. Paul in the 1830s in response to the rapid influx of white settlers construct-ing what would later become St. Paul.

Life among the Kaposia band was tied heavily to the Mississippi, which they called the “River of the Falls.” Members of the band relied on the river for fishing, hunting, transporta-

tion and a supply of drinking water. They also used the fertile soil of the banks for growing crops.

In 1976, the original Kaposia Days planners decided to use the band’s

names to pay tribute to the earliest inhabitants of the area. The plan-ners hoped the festival would draw the community together in the same way the Kaposia band welcomed and worked with the first settlers in the area.

While Kaposia Days may come around every year, the 2012 festival carries special importance because of a significant milestone this year: South St. Paul is celebrating its quasquicen-tennial, or 125th, anniversary as a city.

“A lot of the various events and activities are going to take that on as a theme,” says Carol Swenson, secretary of the 2012 Kaposia Days Volunteer Board.

The momentous marker is just one more great reason for people to celebrate at Kaposia Days this year Swenson says. Those in attendance can expect all the appropriate birthday fixings, from pointy hats to mounds of cake.

Longer festivalTo recognize the unique mile-

stone, the City of South St. Paul is resurrecting the Kaposia Days tra-dition of a four-day festival with a special kickoff event June 21.

Beginning at 4:30 p.m. in Central Square, Mayor Beth Baumann and the City Council invite the public to come out and join in as they grill free hot dogs and enjoy a vari-ety of live music.

Families with young children will be happy to know the Teddy Bear Band will lead off the tunes for the evening from 5 to 5:45 p.m.

From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., every-one can shake a leg to the rhythm of steel drums as Cyril Paul and the Calypso Monarchs take the stage. Cyril Paul, the lead singer of the band, began his musical career as a singer and bongo player decades ago in his native Trinidad. Now he and his band strive to get toes tapping and hips swaying to an array of Caribbean music, including calypso, bolero, cha-cha and reggae.

Besides the music, the Minnesota National Guard is bringing in a climbing wall for the young and young at heart. There will also be train rides, a photo booth and com-munity information booths.

The wall in particular is a great way to burn calories -- a useful fact, considering the South St. Paul Senior Center will be supplying birthday cake for all in attendance.

At 8 p.m., after the hot dogs and cake have been cleared away, the night will take a funky twist with a

heated disco bingo tournament in the bingo tent at Fifth Avenue and Marie Avenue.

For those not familiar with disco bingo, South St. Paul Community Affairs Liaison Deb Griffith says the only way to truly understand is to try it. She did, however, lay out the basics: players choose their own num-

bers for their game boards and use candy for markers (contenders who eat all their markers also eat their way out of the competition), and as you might guess, they wear disco clothes and dance to disco music.

“It’s not your mom and dad’s bingo,” Griffith says. “In fact, we’ve had some grandmas who have left because they just didn’t quite get it.”

But for those who are up to chal-lenge, Griffith says the game pro-vides fast-moving, mind-bending, foot-sliding fun.

“You haven’t lived unless you’ve played disco bingo,” Griffith says.

South St. Paul birthday bash

South St. Paul has shared its quasquicentennial anniversary with residents in a number of ways these past few months, but the biggest party of the yearlong celebration is yet to come.

Faith, Community, Compassion

The Kaposia Days softball tournament began more than 20 years ago as a small event designed to keep people from leav-ing town during the annual South St. Paul summer festival.

It’s become something that not only keeps local people in town, but also draws visitors from outside the state.

In its first year, the tournament fea-tured 12 teams. This summer it will feature 104 teams playing on three fields from June 22 to 24. Rich Rakness, who runs the tournament, said all that growth has been entirely dependent on its partici-pants spreading the word.

“It’s grown that much without any advertising,” he said. “There’s no flyers or posters. It’s all word of mouth.”

That word of mouth has brought in teams from all over the metro area, and even one as far as Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The tournament starts on the eve-ning of Friday, June 22. It runs all day on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m. And the huge number of competing

teams means the tournament will fill three fields for the weekend: Veterans Field, McMorrow Field, and Harmon Field.

“It’s a busy weekend,” Rakness said. “But it’s a fun tournament.”

Baseball Tournament

The softball tournament isn’t the only Kaposia Days showcase of the national pastime. Local team Stockmen’s Irish will host the Stockmen’s Invitational Tournament during the weekend, featuring six teams from around the metro area.

The team plays in the Skyline League of the Minnesota Baseball Academy, an adult amateur baseball organization. Team owner Bill McGuire said the team has drawn 200 to 300 fans for some Stockmen’s Invitational games. And those fans are treated to a very high level of play, McGuire said.

“Most of these players are guys who are out of college, who played ball in college, and some have even played at professional levels.”

The Irish have been successful for most of their existence. Since 1996, when the team formed, it has posted a league win-loss record of 192-62. Last season, the team won 17 of its 18 league games and won the state championship.

Tim Kohlmann, from Hamline University, is the team’s leading hitter this season with a .438 average. The Irish are off to a 4-0 start and sit in first place in the Skyline League.

McGuire said the team hosts the tournament during Kaposia Days to benefit the community.

“We play in the tourna-ment, but we pick up the cost of the umpires and of running the whole week-end,” he said. “So we see it as something to give back to the community, rather than for our ben-efit.”

Happy Birthday, South St. Paul!

The festival will kick off June 21 with a 125th Birthday Party at Central Square Community Center at 100 Seventh Ave. N. The mayor and city council will cook free hot dogs from 4:30 p.m. until supplies are gone, and attendees can expect plenty of kids’ activities and live music to keep the night moving. At 8 p.m., the party shifts to Fifth and Marie ave-nues for disco bingo, sponsored by the Mayor’s Youth Task Force, Angelo’s Italian Restaurant and Experience Shows, Inc.

Events heat upOn Friday, June 22, the festival

gets in the swing of things, beginning with a pool party from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Northview Pool at Thompson Avenue and 19th Avenue N.

Kaposia Days fans might have to make tough choices later in the day, with the annual softball tournament kicking off at 6 p.m. at Veterans Park’s McMorrow and Harmon Fields. The tournament, touted as the state’s

second largest, draws players from all over the area.

The choices get even tougher at 6:30 p.m., when the Grande Parade launches from 12th Avenue and Third Street. The parade will travel south on 12th to Southview Boulevard, where it turns east towards Fifth Avenue, then back south on Fifth to Eighth Street.

Tim Simplot, parade organizer, says this year’s parade will feature approxi-mately 100 floats, cars and march-ing and walking groups. The grand marshal role will be a group effort this year, with all living former South St. Paul mayors and council mem-bers invited to lead the procession in honor of the city’s quasquicentennial.

Simplot has more than a decade’s worth of experience coordinating parades, including last year’s Winter Carnival Parade and the Grand Old Days Parade. But just ask Simplot and he’ll tell you without hesitation: Kaposia Days’ Grande Parade throws the most candy of any parade in the state.

The party keeps on going after the parade with the Lions’ Street Dance, put on the South St. Paul Lions at Mattie’s Lanes at 365 N. Concord St. from 8 p.m. to midnight. Hwy 52 & 494 | Inver Grove Heights | 651.450.1501

The sky’s the limitKaposia Days will soar to new

heights this year thanks to a collabo-ration with the Minnesota Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and Fleming Field. On June 22, CAF will host a barbecue from 6 to 8 p.m. in the parking area in front of the hangar for participants in the baseball tourna-ment.

The big draw will come the next morning during the field-wide open house at Fleming Field. Visitors are invited to come the South St. Paul Airport from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to tour hangars and businesses, get an up-close look at the aircraft, talk to flying pro-fessionals and munch on an array of

goodies from the various vendors on hand. Artists will be present to add to the kids’ experience with face painting and temporary tattoos.

For Amy Lauria, Wing leader for CAF, Fleming Field’s involvement in this year’s Kaposia Days is an excit-ing new development that brings back fond memories of a bygone tradition. Lauria said the events at the field this year will incorporate many of the most popular elements of Fleming Field Days, another annual festival that tapered off in the mid-1990s.

“I’m extremely excited,” Lauria says. “It’s going to be a great event.”

Lauria adds she’s particularly enthused about working with the Kaposia Days board this year because of the historical significance for the city.

“I think everyone’s just really excited about being a part of the 125th anniversary,” she says.

Swenson says getting groups like CAF involved this year was a deliber-ate move by the board to encourage more initiative and involvement from businesses and organizations who might have stood on the sidelines or been directed what to do in past festi-vals.

“We’re trying to get more groups and organizations to take more owner-ship,” Swenson says. “We don’t tell them how to do it.”

During the field-wide open house, CAF will have World War II re-enac-tors on hand as well as a fleet of his-toric warplanes that people can tour and learn more about. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase rides in the aircraft, weather permitting.

On June 24, CAF will continue its open house with another 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., this time using the event as a food drive. Visitors who come June 24 are asked to bring a non-perish-able food item for Neighbors Inc. In exchange, they’ll get full access to the hangar and can tour the museum sec-tion as well. Flights in CAF’s historic planes -- an opportunity which Lauria says is always popular -- will also be available on the second day.

One of the meticulously-restored planes is “Miss Mitchell,” a B-25 bomber that actually saw service in North Africa and Italy during World

War II. She completed more than 130 missions with no crew fatalities -- a rare accomplishment. The CAF keeps her as well-maintained as she was for her 1940s missions -- though she’s probably a lot shinier these days.

And yes, she still flies. “A lot of people don’t know our planes still fly,” Lauria says.

Not only do they fly, Lauria says the planes also provides passengers with a vivid connection with the era and purpose for which they were built.

“It puts in perspective what the veterans went through in World War II,” Lauria says.

So much fun, so little time

June 23 will be another jam-packed day that will require strate-gic planning to capitalize on all the offerings. Vintage auto fans will want

to check out the Classic Car Show in the parking lot of South St. Paul High School parking lot from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Classic Car Cruise on Hardman Avenue from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sports fans can check out day two of the softball tournament, which lasts from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on all three fields. A baseball tournament put on by Stockmen’s Truck Stop will also hit McGuire Field at Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street with games at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Families can register at 10:30 a.m. for their youngsters to walk in the Children’s Parade, which will march from Fifth Avenue and Southview to Central Square under the theme “Happy Birthday South St. Paul!” Once at Central Square, they’ll find games like a fish pond, dip the duck, slop shot and many other kid-oriented carnival activities. Families can also check out the Kaposia Native Village and a craft and flea market for Mom and Dad to browse. Pony rides will be

Funday will offer a petting zoo, pony rides, miniature golf, Dazzling Dave the Yo-Yo Man and much more.

Rest your feet while still having fun at the bingo tent at Fifth and Marie avenues from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., or sit in the bleachers to watch the last day of play for the softball and baseball tournaments.

The festival will end with a bang -- make that bangs -- with a firework show at the high school football field starting at 10:01 p.m. The haze from the fireworks will linger after the show and onlookers may too, but have no fear: South St. Paul residents can look ahead to Kaposia Days for the next 125 years and beyond.
