New band bringsnew Truth to lifeSinger songwriter Ryan Edwards willplay at Otaki’s Civic Theatre on October19 with his new band The Truth Tellers.
Made up of members from hisprevious band plus two new members,The Truth Tellers is a band of soulful, talented musicians.
‘‘Hearing my songs played by thisband is a totally new experience,’’ Ryansays.
‘‘Rob Matthews and Guy Roberts arestill doing what they do so well, but themale vocals of Matt Reeves and JoJenkins are blending so beautifully withAotea’s stunning voice.
‘‘Even in rehearsal we are quiteamazed by what we’re hearing.’’
The concert will feature new materialand also songs from the first twoalbums, Toasted and Whirlwind. Theformat for the show will be different to astandard musical concert, and Edwardsbelieves variety being a major factor.
‘‘This show will be about warmth andentertainment.
‘‘I’ll be having special guests poppingup, but an exciting development is thatthe stage is being sponsored by Mamitefrom Waikanae Beach, so it will have awonderfully warm kiwiana feel.’’
Fresh from duetting with ToniGibson and playing two of his owntracks at Southward Theatre, Edwardsis looking forward to the next period ofmusic with The Truth Tellers.
‘‘Last year, I wrote and played atProject Born, and that was a big momentfor me, because it gave me theconfidence to play any stage at any level.
‘‘I’m working towards a new albumnext year, and this band is making theprospect that much more exciting.’’
The popular Civic Theatre has beenon the radar for Ryan Edwards for awhile.
‘‘It’s just small town New Zealand atits best.
‘‘It will be a very special feeling inthat theatre on the 19th, and we’relooking forward to bringing the feel-good factor to original music.
‘‘It’s not about just sitting andlistening to music — there’ll be a lot ofstuff going on to make you think, tomake you laugh, and to hopefully bringyou back again.’’
■ The concert is at 8pm, with tickets $20available from www.dashtickets.co.nz, or at thedoor from 7.30pm on the night.

Diana’s climacticfinal days shown
DIANARated: MDuration: 1hr 53mins
Diana takes audiences into the privaterealm of one the world’s most iconic andinescapably public women — the Princessof Wales, Diana (two-time Oscar®nominee NAOMI WATTS) — in the lasttwo years of her meteoric life. On theoccasion of the 16th anniversary of hersudden death, acclaimed director OliverHirschbiegel (the Oscar®-nominatedDownfall) explores Diana’s final rite ofpassage: a secret love affair withPakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan(NAVEEN ANDREWS, Lost, The English
Patient), the human complications ofwhich reveal the Princess’s climacticdays in a compelling new light.
Hirschbiegel directs from a screenplayby award-winning playwright StephenJeffreys, inspired by the book Diana: HerLast Love by Kate Snell, which was inturn drawn from extensive interviewswith close friends and confidantes.
The result is a window into thetumultuous, change-filled period from1995-1997, in the wake of Diana’sshattering divorce from Prince Charles, and at the moment when she stood on thecusp of a different life, evolving into aglobal humanitarian, a master ofmaneuvering fame and becoming her ownwoman.
