• How do we form plurals in English?• German forms the plural of nouns in several

different ways.• Like gender, plural forms have no rhyme or

reason and therefore must be memorized!• How to form the plural of a noun will

always be found in a German-English dictionary.

Plural Notes• Plural definite article is DIE• Nouns ending in –er or –el do not normally

change in the plural.– der Amerikaner – die Amerikaner

• However, the stem vowel may change:– der Vater – die Väter

• Most fem. nouns add either –n or –en.• Fem. nouns ending in –in always get –nen • Many masc. nouns take –e.• Nouns ending in vowels (other than –e) usually

take an –s.

Nominative and Accusative Cases

• Nominative Case (Nominativ) is the case used for the SUBJECT of a sentence.

• Accusative Case (Akkusativ) is the case used for the DIRECT OBJECT of a sentence.

• The cat eats the mouse.

• Mrs. Schmidt reads the book.

• Weak masculine nouns are indicated in the vocabulary lists of our textbook by the notation (-en masc.) or (-n masc.)

• There are Nominative and Accusative forms for the indefinite articles.

• Always referred to as EIN Words.

• To ask about the subject of a sentence use: WER (who) or WAS (what).

• To ask about the direct object of a sentence use: WEN (whom) or WAS (what).

• It is irregular like SEIN.

Negation (nicht / kein)

• To negate sentences in German use either nicht or kein.

• NICHT is used to negate VERBS.

• KEIN is used to negate NOUNS.– KEIN has multiple forms.

Stem-Vowel Change Verbs

• A number of common verbs have vowel changes in their stems.

• The changes only occur in the DU and ER,SIE,ES forms

• Verbs with vowel changes will be indicated in the vocabulary sections of the textbook as follows: schlafen (schläft).

Demonstrative Pronouns

• Demonstrative Pronouns are identical to the definite articles and may be used instead of personal pronouns.

• They are usually placed at the beginning of a sentence.
