The people who care

Counsellors will this morning converge at Safari Park Hotel for this year’s Counsel-

ling Conference. This will be the 10th International Counselling Conference being hosted by KAPC.

Certificate Course in Expressive Arts Therapy Facilitated by

Gloria Simoneaux - MA, EXA, REAT: JFK University Orinda, California (Registered Expressive Art Therapist)

Who

This course is intended for trained counsellors interested in deepening their understanding of the healing potential and power of art therapy to be used with children. The course is divided into 2 2-week blocks for tuition, plus a 1 4-week period for practical work in between the 2 2-week blocks. The fieldwork will be the subject of a written assignment.

Content & Methodology

The course is both theoretical and practical. Topics include theory of art therapy and the application and practise of therapeutic skills. After completion of the course the participants will have a greater knowledge of art and how they

foster transformation and healing. Participants will have learned how to adopt their model of working with adults to working with children in crisis through the incorporation of Expressive Art Therapy.

About The Facilitator

Ms. Simoneaux founded Harambee Arts in 2007 and DrawBridge: An Arts Program for Homeless Children in 1989. Prior to that, she developed expressive art programs for children with cancer at the California Pacific Medical Center and the University of

California, both in San Francisco. Since 2000 she has trained teachers, counsellors and orphanage staff in East and Southern Africa in the use of art therapy techniques to support and create trusting relationships with AIDS affected and other vulnerable children. She is currently a Fulbright scholar with KAPC.

KAPC Eldoret Office Update:

The Eldoret Branch office commenced operations on the 2nd November 2008. There has been several courses that have been facilitated over the last ten months.

The office is pleased to be associated with the participants in this conference from Eldoret and its environs.

Currently we have an on-going Higher Diploma class and a Certificate class graduated on 28th August 2009.

Chartered Counsellor StatusWe are once again calling upon qualified counsellors who are thinking about applying for Chartered Counsellor status to proceed and register.

We are receiving more and more requests from organizations and businesses in Kenya to provide counsellors and we want to respond in a professional way.

KAPC Acquires A Data Storage System.KAPC has developed a new data system that will ensure we capture our data more precisely and make use of the same in generating reports to share with our partners and for our internal reporting.

Library News Dr. Maggie Robson has donated two

books to our Library ‘Creative Supervision: The Use of Expressive Arts Methods in Supervision and Self-Supervision’. The other title is ‘Key Issues for Counselling in Action’. KAPC appreciates Maggie for her generos-ity and support.

We have also received two book titles from Ms Gloria Simoneaux: ‘Kids Play; Igniting Children’s Creativity’ and ‘Play Ther-apy; The groundbreaking book that has be-come a vital tool in the growth and develop-ment of children.’ We say a Big Thank You to Gloria for the books and the Compact disks.

KAPC has bought new books which have been dispatched to the libraries in our branch offices in Eldoret, Kisumu and Mom-basa.

KAPC Nairobi : Upcoming Courses Higher Diploma 2008/2009 class –
