History: Leavenworth
Leavenworth is the oldest city in the state of Kansas and as such has a very rich history. Much
of the history is accessible by viewing the original articles published in the city's newspaper, the
Leavenworth Times, which was first established in 1859. Current issues (the past twelve months)
are available in the periodical section of the library. Issues as far back as 1859 may be accessed
on microfilm. The films are housed behind the Circulation Desk (Reference Staff will assist with
obtaining the film and explaining procedures). The Leavenworth Times is partially indexed (to
1859) and information may be retrieved using a computer on the main floor (Reference Staff will
assist). The index can prove to be a useful tool as one searches for articles from the past.
Indians, continued There are many additional resources in the Kansas Room that are available for patrons to read in the library or photocopy. A couple of these resources are:
A seven volume set of books [K 929 JOR] written by Jerry Wright Jordon entitled Cherokee by Blood which contain 20100 records of Eastern Cheokee ancestry in the United States Court of Claims from 1906 to 1910.
The Dawes Commission and the Allotment of the Five Civilized Tribes, 1893-1914 by Kent Carter [K333.3 CAR] is also located in the Leavenworth Public Library Kansas Room.
To look for other available resources at the Leavenworth Public Library click on the Ibistro library catalog link at our web site: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/library/leavenworth/ and search for 'Indians' or 'Native Americans' as a subject.

Frank Morrow Frank Morrow was born in Pickway, Ohio, May 15, 1867. Frank C. Morrow lived and worked in the City of
Leavenworth, Kansas, from 1885 until his death in 1936. During the early years of its history,
Leavenworth was a major industrial city on the eastern border of the Great Plains. Frank Morrow was
employed for 50 years as a clerk for the Great Western Manufacturing Company, one of the city's largest
industrial firms. During his leisure hours, Morrow photographed the City of Leavenworth as he knew it at
the turn-of-the-century. Frank Morrow left a gift, or legacy, to the City of Leavenworth in his broad array of
photographs.
A book about Frank Morrow with many prints of his photographs may be perused in the Kansas Room at the Leavenworth Public Library. The call number is: K 978.1382 MOR. The title is Leavenworth Legacy: Photographs of Frank C. Morrow.
