his control. He takes them up; he brings them down – sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly. He makes them laugh, he brings a tear to their eyes. The 2007 Garth had lost none of the control the mid-90s’ Garth had over his audiences. As I watched one of the most amazing performers I’ve ever witnessed, I wondered if any of today’s young country acts had been out to see Garth. Anybody signing a deal in the last 10 years certainly could have benefited watching the master at work – and not just his stage show. Most could also have learned a thing or two watching the G-man handle all the other trappings that go with the territory – the backstage meet-and-greets with fans, chatting with assorted industry-types, handing out free merch to radiofolk, etc. Asking around, the only artist anyone had seen was Dierks Bentley. And, Dierks got a dose of vintage Garth. As I was told the story, Dierks introduced his wife, Cassidy, to Garth before
Kansas City In the Rearview Mirror It was as if time stood still. I could have been at the Universal Amphitheatre in LA in 1991, Dallas in 1994, Seattle and Chicago in 1997 or any one of the other dozen or so Garth Brooks concerts I saw in the ‘90s. But it was 2007 and I was in Kansas City, surrounded by almost 18,000 adoring fans. Amazingly, the crowd looked much like it did in the mid-’90s. There were teen girls and boys, folks in their 60s and every demo in between. And, just like 10-15 years ago, they all sang the words to every song. The row of teenagers behind me absolutely wore me out singing every song at the tops of their lungs. The eerie thing about that is they weren’t even in kindergarten in the mid-90s. Made me wonder where they learned all those songs. Sure, the KC Garth had a little extra gray under the hat and a few extra lbs. – but neither of those age-induced impediments slowed him down a bit, and no one seemed to mind. The energy and passion were still there – in abundance. He moved around the stage like a guy in his late 20s – and mugged for the audience and cameras, much to the delight of the crowd – just as he did over a decade ago. I had the very real sense that everyone there on the final night of his nine-show KC run felt they were part of something very special, and they were going to make the most of it – hey were going to be part of the festivities. And perhaps that is what Garth has always done best. He tears down the proscenium, making the audience an integral part of the show. He doesn’t play them like a violin – he controls them like a conductor does an orchestra. Every movement is in
Country Aircheck is presenting The People Meter: What It Means To The Country Music Industry on Friday, Dec. 14 from 9:30am to 1pm at the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Ford Theater. Limited seating is still available for this free panel, which includes Arbitron’s Gary Marince, consultant Jaye Albright, CBS Radio’s Jeff Garrison, MediaSense’s Bob Michaels and WXTU/Philadelphia’s Bob McKay. This technology could change the Country radio and music business industry as much as Soundscan changed the record business. Don’t miss it. Reserve your seat by emailing [email protected].
the show. Heading backstage alone after the performance, Dierks was reportedly stunned when Garth referred to Cassidy by name, asking how she liked the performance. In some ways, I think the 2007 Garth might even have put on a better show than the mid-90s version. While there were fewer acrobatics to be sure, he had the extra confidence born of a few extra years on the planet. And, I don’t know if he just didn’t show his guitar chops back then or has picked up a few new licks in recent years, but his guitar playing during solo acoustic performances was much better than I ever recall. There were no pyrotechnics or hi-wire entrances for the 2007 Garth. And, there were no 50-foot hi-def TV screens which are all the rage this year. In fact, the only video present was on the Sprint Center’s scoreboard screens in the middle of the arena. That was no matter to a crowd who was on its feet long before the first note played and remained standing for over two hours. Perhaps the 16-year boy behind me summed-up the entire KC run the best when, as Garth stood amidst thunderous on the last step before making his final exit, the kid turned to his buddy and screamed, “Man, that is one bad-ass dude.” Was then; is now. --L.H.
Garth Screen Gems Radio stations nationwide hosted screenings of Brooks’ Kansas City finale in local movie theaters. We asked a number of radio folks for their impressions: KHEY/El Paso’s Steve Gramzay says early technical difficulties were quickly resolved at his screening. “It was quite the experience,” he says. “Stadium seating. Everybody had a front row seat and the were all dancing in their chairs, sitting down, for almost two hours. Could this be the wave of the future for small towns? If you didn’t know where you were, you’d swear you were actually there.” WYAK/Myrtle Beach PD Joey Dee reports, “The theater was about three-quarters full and, considering it was a little older crowd than I expected, they were fairly boisterous. About five minutes till I went up front and made some comments, including telling them Garth would want them to sing along, stand up and cheer – pretend you are at the concert, not in a movie theatre. They responded pretty well. “Everyone stood and was really into it during ‘Friends In Low Places.’ They sang along with most of the songs. There even five
or six girls who went down front fairly early on and danced during the uptempo favorites. It was better than I expected.” KKBQ/Houston APD/MD Christi Brooks hosted a theater show in nearby Katy. “Not a bad crowd,” she says. “We were a little worried because only one person was there at 7pm when the doors opened, but by show start at 8pm they had filed in. The theater wasn’t full, but there were more than I thought – about 35 in a 100-seat theater. Everyone was super nice and a lot of the comments were that they weren’t going to get to see Garth any other way. There were some people there that went to Kansas City last week for the show and were there watching it again on the big screen. Nuts huh?” KKGO/Los Angeles morning host Shawn Parr says, “It’s hard to believe an artist could possibly take you out of a movie theatre and put you into an arena 2,500 miles away, but that is exactly what happened. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. From the moment Garth walked on stage, the whole theatre was out of control screaming, clapping, and singing along. Garth at one point challenged all of his fans around the world to get out of their seats and sing along to ‘Friends In Low Places,’ and that’s exactly what they did – me included! I am glad to be a part of country music history, Garth Brooks style. Thanks so much, Garth. And yes, as long as it takes, We Will Wait!” KFKF/Kansas City PD Dale Carter had this to say about hosting a theater show: “We did but, honestly, I didn’t stay. After nine wonderful nights of Garth, my team is ready for a long winter’s nap!”

Country Turns Out For OK’s 100th Some of country music’s biggest names – all Oklahomans – joined a host of other celebrities and notables as the state celebrated its centennial in Oklahoma City Friday night (11/16). Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, Toby Keith, Reba McEntire, Blake Shelton and Carrie Underwood were among the artists participating in what Governor Brad Henry called, “a once-in-a-century event.” Aircheck’s own Brooke Trissel was on hand, and provided this on-site perspective: “Toby played ‘American Soldier’ during a tribute to the troops, and Blake Shelton came out to sing ‘Wichita Lineman’ with the song’s writer, Jimmy Webb. Vince and Reba did ‘Oklahoma Swing’ together, and Carrie

sang ‘You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma’ and ‘I Ain’t In Checotah Anymore.’ Gill and Webb performed their co-write ‘Oklahoma Rising,’ which has been adopted as the state’s centennial song. “Garth spoke and paid tribute to the Oklahoma City bombing victims, which segued into Reba singing ‘If I’d Only Known,’ which was just beautiful. There were a lot of broken hearts after Garth didn’t perform, as he was the main draw for a lot of people – and the tickets weren’t cheap.” [Editor’s Note: Garth was never slated to perform, a point his publicist said they urged event organizers to make more clear.] Country’s outstanding representation aside, the celebration included participation from some of the Oklahoma Indian tribes. “Not all the tribes viewed the 100th anniversary of the Oklahoma Territory being opened up to the white man as a reason to celebrate,” Trissel notes. Still, the participants’ musical and dance contributions drew a standing ovation from the crowd of approximately 12,000. Others participating included the All American Rejects, Flaming Lips, Patti Page and Shirley Jones. “The pageantry and high caliber of Oklahoma talent contained in one show was unbelievable,” says Trissel, an Oklahoman now living in Texas. “We all know about Texas pride, but this was the first time I felt an Oklahoma pride to rival what’s going on across the state line.”
