That means one month until the end of term at the end of Week 11– my goodness! P&C AGM Thank you to the parents that could make it to our P&C Annual General Meeting last Friday morning. We move into 2019 with the same executive as in 2018 and I thank the P&C for their continued support of programs and resources for our students and look forward to our continued cooperative success throughout this year. Parent/Teacher Meetings This week our teaching staff will be sending out preferred meeting times and/ or finalising meeting times with parents and carers regarding face to face parent teacher meetings to take place in the next few weeks. Easter Raffle Our P&C Easter raffle will be taking place on the last day of term (12th April from 2pm onwards). We are seeking chocolate eggs and deli items to use as raffle ticket prizes for the raffle draw at school. We also request that if you have any baskets or easter bags that you send those in too. Raffle tickets will go home with students this week and can be sold for $1.00 each. The chocolate and deli items can be brought in to the school office. Harmony Day This Thursday is Harmony Day and with recent world events seems quite poignant timing to remind ourselves as a school and a community the value to be found within cultural diversity. It is a mufti day with students encouraged to wear orange or any tradition cultural outfit they may have. Also our canteen will be offering a Malaysian snack on the day called Tauhu Sambat (Stuffed deep fried tofu) filled with cucumber, carrot and bean sprouts, served with a sweet and sour sauce made from capsicum, tomatoes, lemon, salt and sugar(no chili in the sauce) - 30 cents each or 2 for 50 cents. Yum! NAPLAN Online Practice for Year 3 and Year 5 Our Year 3 and Year 5 students will sit a practice online 45minute NAPLAN assessment between 25th March to 5th April. This is an omnibus assessment that includes Maths, Grammar and Comprehension. It is designed to help the students familiarise themselves with the online format of this assessment for NAPLAN. There continues to be much debate around NAPLAN testing at a state and national level. I personally believe we are not sending our children to school for ‘grades’ and especially not for our students to be ‘pigeon-holed’ by mass standardised testing, which is ultimately used to ‘rank’ students and schools. For more information regarding the online assessment here is a link to the NAPLAN website https://www. nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site. Andrew Smee - Principal Skoolbag App Parents please see instructions on back page of this newsletter on how to install Skoolbag App on your phone. The school uses this app to publish the schools newsletter, send out reminders and notifications and there is also a form to fill out to explain absences for your child/ren. There is also a calender of events on this app. What is Purple Day? Purple Day, 26th March, is a global initiative dedicated to raising epilepsy awareness. Purple Day was founded in 2008, by nine-year-old Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia, Canada. Motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy, Cassidy started Purple Day in an effort to get people talking about the condition and to let those impacted by seizures know that they are not alone. She named the day Purple Day after the internationally recognised colour for epilepsy, lavender. On the 26th March we encourage everyone to ‘Go Purple’ to raise awareness of epilepsy within the school community, and raise funds to support the Thousands of Australians around the country affected by the condition. Please bring a gold coin donation. Mrs Robinson
