January & February 2018 Pastor Michael Metz As I think about the year ahead, I try to imagine what it will bring. Of course, I cannot say. But as I think about the things that face us today, I know many of them will continue to be part of our lives. Across the world, there is much turmoil. There is violence and, along with it, hatred. There is terrorism, as well as genocide. There is upheaval, a yearning for change and develop- ment, both politically and economically. Will democracy continue to spread? Will this be the year for peace? There is much hatred in the world, yet there are also many signs of goodwill, with adversaries negotiating instead of fighting, and with people working to bring democracy to their land. We can see signs of God’s presence and work in such as these. In our nation, there are both achievements and problems. The signs about our national economy have improved much compared with 2008. We are grateful for improvements, but also know that many are still in trouble. We continue to suffer a plague of mass killings. Will we know freedom from violence? Even within the turmoil, we see the signs of God’s presence: generosity and care expressed in so many ways, people helping strangers, and more. In our church, there are signs of growing, even as we might wish to grow faster. Several new members have joined this past year and we have increased our ministry of inviting. Can we be a church that not only opens the doors to guests and new members, but goes a step further, and invites others to walk with Christ along with us? There are signs that, together with God’s help, we can. This year will tell us a lot about ourselves at Kenwood Park United Methodist Church, as well as about our nation and even the world. No matter what this year may bring, we give thanks that God is with us! Yours in Faith, Pastor Michael
