My days were dark and dreary, My hopes were small and wee, And I was filled with torture, ‘Til the Shriners thought of me. I felt as if in a dungeon, Under heavy lock and key, I could not see the sunshine, ‘Til the Shriners thought of me. But now I’m getting better, And happy as can be, A kid with a smile upon my face, Since the Shriners thought of me. A few more months of kindness, An then I can, with glee, Play as other children play, Since the Shriners thought of me. An in the battle of a chance, I believe the Great Referee, Will surely give the decisions, To those Shriners that thought of me. SHC FOCUSED Model of Care
Shriners Hospitals for Children (SHC) is initiating a new clinical model of care called FOCUSED. This will provide the framework in which family-centered care is delivered in our hospitals, which is in line with our mission, vision and core values. FOCUSED originated from SHC - Canada as they were preparing for their move to their new hospital facility. FOCUSED is an acronym for:
Family-centered care is based on the belief that the family is a child’s primary source of strength and support. Healthcare professionals are the experts on health and disease. Parents are the experts on the child and they can offer essential information to enhance their child’s health care.
Open communication is we share complete and impartial information in a timely manner with patients and their families with compas-sion so that they can make better decisions about their health care.
Interprofessional collaboration is when mul-tiple health care workers from different back-grounds work together with patients, families, care givers and communities to deliver the highest quality of care. We believe that safe,
high quality and accessible patient care requires interprofessional collaboration.
By actively listening to patients and families, we ensure that they fully understand what is being communicated. We value a culture of compas-sion. We take time to attend to the needs of our patients and their families.
Keeping patients safe is our top priority and is reflected in our hospital-wide patient safety plan and our culture of safety. Patient care is seamless between transitions of care within the hospital, with other care providers, and with the community.
SHC fosters learning environments that embrace innovation and creativity, ongo-ing staff development and interprofessional collaboration. We ensure that staff have the expert skills required to care for patients. As recognized experts in our fields of practice, we educate the next generation of leaders in pediatric orthopaedic and neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
SHC searches for new and innovative ways to provide exceptional patient care. We embrace continuous performance improvement activi-ties to enrich the patient and family experience and the outcomes of the care we deliver.

Chaplain’s Message — Fr. Stuart Crawshaw
There are those who say that people should choose their own religious inclinations, and select their own Christ and their own Godin a kind of Walmart of religions. There are those do-gooders who turn tolerance into license for Muslims and other anti-Christians. They would have God created in their own image. They say, “aren’t we all worshiping the same God?” The unequivocal answer is that we are not worshiping the same God and those who say otherwise are succumbing to the craftiness of Satan.
Christ, as the Good Shepherd, does not merely cuddle lambs, as the Hallmark greeting cards picture Him. He fights all the enemies of God’s sheep. We can fight with him, or choose to be part of the hateful and lazy mob that denies the Good Shepherd. We can go our lazy way or we can pray, and speak and believe the Truth. In that lies the strength and worth of Masonry and the ultimate purpose of the Shrine.
The battle that rages in our nation today is simply the conflict between those who know and love and speak the truth and those who hate the truth and would have
it repressed. There are those on the left who are not content with simple disagreement, but seek to squelch those with whom they disagree. This has not always been true in America. There was a time when it was popular to hear “I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” But not anymore. There is no longer a simple engaging in debate, there is rather the silencing and muzzling of all those who believe in Biblical and Judeo-Christian truth. Same-sex marriage is now generally accepted – indeed, even our bathrooms have become battlegrounds of depravity and political maneuvering. Our world is full of ignorant and false teachings that must be refuted by those of us loyal to the Biblical and doctrinal truths, much of which is embodied in Masonry.
Stay tuned, the Shriners Hospitals
update will be concluded in thenext issue of the
Kalif Kall.

Gait Lab: The gait lab helped evaluate over 400 patients this year to help clarify their bracing, therapy and possibly surgical re-quirements. This service is imperative to help us make the best clinical decisions for our patients with neuromuscular or post-trau-matic deformities. Since its inception, the SHC-SLC gait lab has done over 7400 studies! Bruce MacWilliams became the head of our research team and 5 peer reviewed studies and 3 book chapters were generated by staff from our hospital.Pharmacy Services: Our pharmacy staff mixed over 3350 sterile products for patient use. They verified over 1700 medications that children use at home, and completed over 15,000 new orders! In addition, they helped our narcotic task force to make our work-place and our discharged patients safer from these potentially dangerous medications.New MDs: Can anyone really remember this place without Dr Singer’s infectious smile
and dedication? Or Dr. Kuestner’s playful and brilliant patient care? Dr. Fedorak is just starting, but his warmth, kindness and genuine love of SHC mission and patients will help to continue to define our spine pro-gram in the future. And in the Fall of 2017, we add Philip McClure who specializes in limb deformity and has completed 2 superb pediatric orthopedic fellowships.Wheelchair and Seating: We added much needed seating personnel this year: the new clinician, product development and pro-gram/camp management assistance were all well utilized! We repaired over 1200 chairs, gave over 215 donated/refurbished chairs to new and much needed homes, and also helped create 177 new chairs for children. The Halloween Costume Chair clinic was a huge hit! The innovative, and critically needed, adaptive car seat program is helping many families finally move their larger but neuromuscularly disabled children, safely in the family car. And of course, one of our crown jewels, The Unlimbited Camp, helped 43 children with amputations feel great about themselves! Also—one of those trauma kids from PCH described above who also had OI, was so moved by her care at SHC that when she received her settlement----brace yourself, donated $15,000 to the camp. Pay it forward indeed.
Outreach Clinics: Our teams travelled to 12 outreach clinics in 2016. Our teams dedi-cated an overnight stay in either Phoenix, Denver or El Paso to see over 500 patients for whom travel is incredibly difficult or simply too expensive. Outpatient Clinics: Here in SLC we sched-uled over 400 clinics. Over 7500 patients were seen, with nearly1600 being new patients to our hospital. Over 820 children were booked for surgical indications, 921 were seen by social work and interpreter services helped on over 400 encounters. Telehealth was introduced this year and to date has saved over 6400 miles of travel and nearly $4000 in travel expenses.

Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, & children of all ages!
It is with great pleasure that I announce the arrival of the First Annual
Kalif Shriners Carnival, to be held May 4th-7th in Sheridan. This Is
very exciting news to all Kalif Nobles and Shriners all over Wyoming.
Dreamland Carnival of Bridger, MT is going to work hand- in-hand with the Nobles of
Kalif Temple to bring Smiles and Cheer to Children of all ages in the Sheridan area. Also, a
percentage of the ticket sales will benefit Kalif Temple.
So, with all that exciting news being said, where does Kalif come in to the picture you
may ask? The answer is very simple. You can’t have a Shriners Carnival without Shriners can
you? We will need support and help from all the Kalif Nobles from the time you first read
this article ‘til the day after the carnival ends. To make this carnival as successful as possible,
we will need help where ever we can find it. There will be pre-sale tickets to be sold,
advertising, and promoting. Remember this is 1st annual, so it’s never been done before.
There will be lots of phone calls to make to keep all our ducks in a row prior to the event,
and once the carnival gets to town we would like to see as large a Shriners presence as
possible. I’m talking Klowns at every ride, Oriental Band playing nearby, and Nobles proudly
walking the grounds in their Fezzes helping to keep everyone smiling and laughing and
show them how Shriners Have Fun Helping Kids!
By the time you find yourself reading this article know that steps have already been
taken towards bringing this great show to our area. If you have any interest in helping with
this event, please come forward and let it be known. We will need all the help we can get
- Kalif Klowns —
to set up everything prior to the event, and will need even more help the day the first ride
arrives in Sheridan. I will do my best to keep all of the Nobles of Kalif informed on this event.
If you have any further questions, comments, suggestions, or even just words of wisdom
and support, it will be much appreciated.
Well that’s all I have for now, I’m sure you will see many updates to come between now
and opening day of the carnival. Until then, always remember what we are and what we do,
