1. Brain Base: First ImpressionsAccording to Dr. Eric Jensen in “Sizzle and Substance”, you have roughly 30 seconds to make a positive impression when a person enters your space. Five neurotransmitters (adrenalin, noradrenalin, epinephrine, vasopressin, ACTH) are floating around in your brain when you enter a new situation, waiting to imprint the message “I like it here” or “I hate it here.” Within 30 seconds, they solidify your positive or negative impression, and that first impression is nearly impossible to reverse. Good stewards of the brain use every tool in their arsenal to help the youth feel welcomed, comfortable, and successful from the get-go. At H2H, you’ll greet them at the door with a friendly smile and hand shake. Play the theme song for the day as they enter to preview it in their minds and draw them away from their problems. Project an intriguing piece of visual art to make them wonder what the theme is about today. Clear the clutter from your teaching space so they focus on only a few things. And make sure that one of those few things is your infectious, Christ-like smile!

2. Brain Base: Art & SequenceThe right side of the brain processes colors, symbols, pictures and relationship. The left side of the brain processes words, sequences, and logical detail. The right likes to see the whole picture. The left focuses on the parts. This slide's animation will preview the topics for the semester’s 15 themes in a way that will speak to both the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Enjoy!

3. Brain Basics: Affirmation and ApplauseWhat does public affirmation do to the brain? Chemically, it pumps the reward neurotransmitter dopamine into the brain. This gives you energy, stimulates further neural growth, and increases positive attraction toward people and where the affirmation occurs. Affirmation in this context builds a love of learning, increases bonding, and increases greater flexibility in the brain’s executive attention system. A little applause, a little recognition, and a little attention go a long way!

4. Brain Base: Healthy CompetitionA little healthy competition from time to time pumps up the "upper" neurotransmitter epinephrine levels in the brain. This chemical helps the brain focus. Whenever epinephrine is released, its sister chemical, norepinephrine rises throughout the body, stimulating the expansion of your capillaries and fostering even more blood flow to the brain. The result? Alert students ready to learn! Even more, norepinephrine helps fix long-term learning by stimulating the amygdala. Note: The game must move quickly for these drugs to pump in to your system. Don’t teach here! (The teaching will happen in another context.) Keep it going!

5. Brain Base: Competition, Winning & FunWinning a game, enjoying the competition, and watching friends open gag gifts - these activities increase the levels of dopamine - the pleasure, alertness and arousal chemical in the brain. Activities that cause dopamine to be released will be associated with pleasure, leading guests to want more and more of the activity associated with it - in this case, learning! (Plus, doing this at the start of your theme time will get guest into your teaching space on time because they won’t want to miss it.)Imagine the coup in the house where, each Sunday, the kid is yelling, "Mom! Get in the car! I can’t be late for Sunday School or I’ll miss Bible Song!"

6. Brain Base: Why Teach With Art?Because the chatter of a hundred billion neurons is hard to silence. If one is to get the attention of the pre-adolescent brain (or any brain, for that matter), one must make a compelling, chatter-silencing case for the brain to focus upon. Art does that. It triggers the attention of huge groups of neurons in your cerebral cortex. When a portion of a group of neurons is stimulated, the whole neural set will fire and you will see and remember. Why teach with art but not explain it? There is nothing like curiosity to get the brain’s attention. Giving just a glimpse of what is to come is good brain science. What’s happening when you arouse the curiosity of the learner? “Curiosity and anticipation are known as appetitive states because they stimulate the mental appetite,” says Dr. Eric Jensen in “Tools for Engagement.” (www.thebrainstore.com) They motivate us toward the goal of finding out more and satisfying the curiosity. Chemically, this anticipation event activates multiple centers of the brain and floods them with alertness, attention and arousal neurotransmitters.Note: We want to “open the kid before we open the book” at every transition. A state of curiosity, a teaser that only reveals part of what you are going to cover, and an affirmation of youth venturing a guess - these will lead children to wonder, anticipate, and look forward to discovering the theme as it unveils.

7. Brain Base: Breathing & StretchingBreathing deeply before entering prayer does a number of things to your state of mind. Increasing higher oxygen levels to the brain allows you to focus better. Concentrating on heartbeat and breath cause a mental transition to occur, releasing stress and pumping immune-bolstering chemicals into the bloodstream. Creating this mental shift allows the leader to enter the next mode of teaching with guests refreshed, renewed, and ready for more.

8. Brain Base: Music and PatternsThe brain loves patterns. It loves to search for, store, and retrieve patterns. Music is all about patterns. Karaoke letters flashed on a screen are patterns. Art is made up of patterns. Sign language and movement added to the sign are additional, powerful patterns. The gatekeeper for your attention in the brain is called the thalamus. It decides whether or not the information you are receiving is worth paying attention to and sending into long term memory. If the thalamus is only getting a little stimulus and a few patterns – words spoken in a dull tone – it won’t bother to open the gates. If it is being bombarded by enough unique, fun, original, or shocking patterns from enough sources – a sensual bombardment of sight, sound, motion, emotion and meaning – it will have no choice but to send the information through to long term memory. When the song and sign are done again and again, the synapses (nerve endings) get more and more efficient in recognizing the whole experience as a pattern it can recall and relive over and over again. (Here’s the freaky thing: Even by closing your eyes and visualizing the song and signing, your brain will retrieve the pattern from your memory bank and begin to reinforce it.)Now, what happens when you add music, movement, art and meaning to a Bible verse song? The melody of the song activates the right brain. Patterns are recognized. Harmony and rhythm, which are basically math, activate more of the left brain. Those two parts of the brain start talking to one another and creating more solid patterns. Measuring beats activates the cerebellum. A third part of the brain joins the action. Adding color and movement on the FINK karaoke slides activate the visual cortex. All these areas of the brain reach out to each other and create a multi-layered neural highway of connections and patterns. Connecting sign language and body movement to all this creates an additional myriad of complex connections and patterns from other areas of the body and brain. Further, singing involves moving the diaphragm, and signing involves a whole array of muscles. Moving your body oxygenates the blood and pumps glucose to feed the brain and create the glial cells to “glue” the verse in place. The motor cortex in your frontal lobe connects to the internal gyroscope in the bones behind your ear, which connects to your somatic sensory cortex in the parietal lo e which registers the location of your arms and hands in space. (Okay, that is more than you want to know.) Suffice it to say, “Teach Bible with music and movement – and teach it before age 12 – and you’ll cement God’s Word into patterns that they will recall for the rest of their lives.”

After Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden, God gave them two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain grew up to become a farmer. Abel became a shepherd. Both Cain and Abel brought gifts to God. These gifts were burned on God’s altar. Abel gave God the best he had. Cain did not. God was pleased with Abel’s offering and not with Cain’s. Cain became jealous of Abel and killed him. God gave Adam and Eve another son named Seth (Genesis 4). From Seth’s family came the Savior, who died to take away all sins.

Jesus once told this story: “A certain man was walking from Jerusalem to Jericho. On the way, some thieves robbed and wounded him and left him half dead. Later, a Samaritan came and helped the man. (Samaritans and Jews were enemies.) The Samaritan bandaged the man’s wounds and took him to a place where he could receive care” (Luke 10:30–37). The Samaritan reminds us of Jesus. He came to help and save all people, including enemies and those who don’t know Him.

9. Brain Base: Prepeat, Peat & RepeatOne of FINK’s central philosophies is to preview, view and review. The brain science behind this is either complex in its simplicity or simple in its complexity. (Figure that one out!)The first time you hear or learn a new thing, the messages lodge in your hippocampus. The second time, they may move to your deeper memory centers housed in the neo cortex. Every time you repeat the action or restate the new knowledge, a multitude of synapses form and the associated neurons get covered with more and more insulation glue from the glial cells. (Insulation makes the wiring fire more efficiently)When you’re singing and signing, nerve cells from one portion of the brain seek out nerve cells all over the body to share their connections. Prepeat, peat and repeat isn’t simply one way to lodge information into long term memory. It is the only way.

10. Brain Basics: TeamworkWhat’s going on here? Teamwork, energy, previews, satisfaction, reviews, oxygenation of the blood, faster heart rates, laughter, good stress, fun. As the game is played, the body’s favorite “upper” – the neurotransmitter dopamine is squirting out rewards to multiple pleasure centers in the brain, maintaining working memory and supporting information processing. When the brain is rewarded for learning, it seeks that reward again and again. One becomes literally addicted to the activity that is giving them pleasure: learning Bible with friends!

12. Brain Basics: Bonding & SharingWhat happens when you share your Highs & Lows and someone is listening? What happens when they are able to prove they heard you by becoming your advocate in front of a small group of friends? What happens when you hold hands, huddle up, touch one another and hear your name mentioned in prayer? A host of healthy stress-busting, immune bolstering chemicals release their healing powers to the brain. Chief among them is the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine is the main “upper” in your central nervous system. It gives you energy, helps you feel pleasure, stimulates growth, and helps nerve cells grow in leaps and bounds. When you feel safe in the group, the serotonin levels get into balance, giving you a state of well-being that helps moderate moods and actions.

14. Brain Basics: Chilling OutSoft, slow music* has a calming effect on the brain and allows the brain to reflect, relax, and solidify the key learning of the day. Soft music can also lower anxiety by lowering cortisol levels, blood pressure and heart rate while promoting greater learner satisfaction. As you review the creations of the day, with soft music playing and proper body preparation, the learning will sink in and move from the short term scratch pad (hippocampus) the long term hard drives in the brain.*A musical meter of 55 – 65 beats per minute is optimal for the wrap up music. If the theme song is a rocking one, invite your musicians to slow it down but keep the melody embedded.

15. Brain Base: BlessingAside from the spiritual aspects of blessing, the body gains immensely from the touch, the emotional connection, and the well-being generated by this ritual. Don’t let anyone leave without multiple blessings. This closing act will bond groups, pump dopamine into their bodies, bolster their immune systems and leave them wanting to come back for more. Not a bad way to end Bible Song.
