Prevention!

It doesn’t matter how much you THINK you have taught your students, when they begin playing an instrument, the key to THEIR success and keeping YOUR sanity is to get your parents on board!

Inform your parents!

Equip your students!

Design your semester for FUN and SUCCESS!

GLOCKENSPIEL PARENT INFORMATION LETTER

Dear Third Grade Parents,Third, fourth and fifth grade music students use glockenspiels to reinforce

treble clef note reading and rhythms. Each student will be issued a book, a glockenspiel and a lesson plan sheet. These should be kept in a special “practice place”. The book and glockenspiel should be returned to the music room in December. Lost or damaged books will result in a $10 replacement fee. Lost or damaged glockenspiels will result in a #40 replacement fee.

The students will be responsible for practicing certain songs each week and playing them in class. I encourage the students to come to my classroom before school any morning (except Day 2s) between 7:20 and 7:50 to practice or pass off their songs.

The key to success is making sure that you hear your child “saying” the notes aloud and then “saying and playing” two measures at a time, until they can play the entire song. They may not write the note names down. If you have any questions, please feel free to stop by before school with your child and I’ll give you a 5 minute “crash course” on how they should be practicing at home. It is much easier for them when they practice the same way that we do in class. The good news is that they use the same 11 treble clef notes from first grade through fifth grade.

I am looking forward to a great semester of music with your child. Mrs. HawkinsElementary Music

What about the students who play another instrument and can pass off

the songs quickly?

When a student gets two songs ahead, they may go to a music center of their choice:

• Treasure Hunter Music Game – great questions on composers, instruments, and musical terms

Page 33: K-5 th Enjoyable “Tried and True” Units Renay Hawkins Mount Paran Christian School

DANCE OFF!

• This dance mat helps students with large and small motor skills

• As the stars in the center light up, they must jump on the corresponding stars on their side of the mat

• One or two may play at the same time

• They listen to various melodies and rhythms as they “dance”!

Page 34: K-5 th Enjoyable “Tried and True” Units Renay Hawkins Mount Paran Christian School

Remember the idea about making a “jump rope rhyme” CD for the trampoline?

• Even third, fourth and fifth graders love to jump on a trampoline!

• They LOVE making their own CD, too! Put them at the computer with the “Audacity” program, a mic and CD and let them go!

• They reinforce “the beat of their feet” by jumping to the beat of the music.

• Students waiting must clap along.

Page 35: K-5 th Enjoyable “Tried and True” Units Renay Hawkins Mount Paran Christian School

Some students just love to play on the glockenspiel!

Make a music center with lots of choices of sheet music:

• Disney songs

• Christmas songs

• Folk songs

• Rounds

• Scales and arpeggios

Page 36: K-5 th Enjoyable “Tried and True” Units Renay Hawkins Mount Paran Christian School

Everyone loves puppets!

Let the students practice puppet skills and learn at the same time!

• Shurley jingles

• Special program songs

• Math raps

• States and Capitals song

• Pre-recorded puppet skits

Lesson Plan Tips

Write in changes on your lesson plans, based on what actually happened in the class.

What worked well? What didn’t?

Did the students learn easily? Were they frustrated? What can you change to prevent that?

Did the activity take longer than expected? Why? How should you adapt it?
