First vaccineagainst denguefound to work inThailand trial The world's first vaccineagainst the dengue virus hasbeen shown to protect againstthree of the four strains of thevirus in a trial in Thailand, thevaccine's maker announcedthis week. The vaccine actu-ally generated antibody re-sponses against all four strainsof the virus, but for some rea-son, one strain was still able toinfect children who receivedthe vaccine, the company said, and scientists are now trying tofigure out why. Meanwhile, amuch larger trial involving31,000 adults and children isnow under way in 10 countriesin Asia and Latin America.

As many as 3 billion people, mostly in equatorial regions, are vulnerable to infections bythe virus, which is carried bymosquitoes. In the UnitedStates, it is common only inPuerto Rico and Hawaii, al-though there was a recent out-break in Florida. An estimated230 million people are in-fected each year. As many as80% of those do not developsymptoms, but 2 million --mostly children -- develop asevere form called dengue he-morrhagic fever. Symptomsinclude fever, headache andmuscle and joint pains --which have led to the alterna-tive name, break-bone fever.Infections can be lethal. Thereis no specific treatment for in-fections and currently no pre-ventive agent.

Dengue is an RNA virus ofthe same genus as the WestNile, yellow fever and St.Louis encephalitis viruses. There are four strains of thevirus. Infection with onestrain provides lifelong im-munity against that strain, butonly short-term immunityagainst the other three.

Amid rolling crisesspilling over from Europeand twitchy consumers andinvestors at home, the USeconomy has struggled forfour years to recover from the"Great Recession."

Earlier estimates had ex-pected growth of around 2.7percent this year, with unem-ployment of 8.9 percent.

Obama's allies in Con-gress seized on the latest fig-ures as evidence of the needfor Republicans to accept the

president's plans to juice theeconomy.

"There is much more workto be done to bolster our re-covery," said CongressmanChris Van Hollen. "It is moreimportant than ever to passthe pre sident's jobs package, which has been sitting beforethe House of Representativessince September."

Republican oppose theplan because it would raisetaxes on those earning over$200,000 a year.

WASHINGTON (AFP) -White House economists yes-terday predicted that unem-ployment will fall onlyslightly by the end of theyear, amid modest economicgrowth and a dangerouslyhigh budget deficit.

The Office of Manage-ment and Budget showed lit-tle in the way of optimismabout the state of the world'slargest economy, forecastingunemployment of 7.9 percentby year-end, compared with8.2 percent today.

The White House unit alsopredicted that 2012 growthwould come in around 2.6percent, not fast enough tobring down painfully highlevels of joblessness, whichremain the biggest obstacle toa solid recovery and Presi-dent Barack Obama's chancesof re-election in November.

The 2012 budget deficit isexpected to reach $1.21 tril-lion, around $116 billion lessthan first expected, but stillastronomically high, at 7.8percent of gross domesticproduct.

IMF estimated that the Spanishpublic deficit would exceed thegovernment's target in 2012,and 2013 when it would be 5.9percent of output, the fundforecast.

Eurozone countries are notsupposed to have deficits ofmore than 3.0 percent of grossdomestic product (GDP), butSpain's was likely to be around7.0 percent this year, the IMFwarned. The Spanish govern-ment currently aims for a 6.3percent deficit in 2012 and 4.5percent in 2013.

On June 29, European lead-ers agreed at an EU summit onfinancial reforms for the euro-zone, including measures to re-capitalise banks withoutadding to the debt load of hostcountries.

"Spain's prospects for low-ering borrowing costs wouldbe critically helped by a timelyimplementation of the summitdecisions and continued pro -gress toward a banking and fis-cal union at the Europeanlevel," the IMF said.

Yesterday, the governmentruled out the prospect of a fullinternational bailout.

PARIS (AFP) - The Interna-tional Monetary Fund warnedyesterday that the Spanish re-cession would be worse thaninitially expected, with a fore-cast contraction of 1.7 percentthis year and of 1.2 percent in2013.

In addition, the IMF saidthat worsening market tensioncould disrupt Spain's ability tofinance itself, despite a euro-zone bailout agreed for Spa -nish banks and emergencyfinancial reforms for the 17-nation bloc.

"Market tensions could in-tensify further, threateningmarket access, particularly ifpolicies fail to stem capitalout flows or due to furtherstress elsewhere in the euroarea," the IMF said in a reporton the eurozone's fourthbiggest economy.

Spanish borrowing costsare close to the level at whichGreece, Ireland and Portugalwere forced to seek interna-tional bailouts, and eurozoneleaders are pulling out all thestops to prevent Madrid fromfacing the same fate.

LONDON (AFP) - YohanBlake has long lurked in theshadows cast by Jamaicanteam-mates Usain Bolt andAsafa Powell -- but after somestunning results, "The Beast"has suddenly roared to promi-nence.

Blake was far from an un-known when he claimed theworld 100m title in Daegu,South Korea, last year afterBolt sensationally false-started in the final.

But his exploits in the Ja-maican trials of beating Bolt, the 100m and 200m worldrecord-holder and Olympicchampion, over both distancessent a ripple through the worldof athletics.

Blake's personal best of9.75sec in the 100m makeshim the fourth fastest sprinterof all time after Bolt, Ameri-can Tyson Gay and Powell. His 19.26sec in the 200m isthe second fastest ever afterBolt.

A worthy, potential succes-sor has been truly unearthed, coached at the Racers TrackClub in Kingston by GlenMills, the same man who hasoverseen Bolt's transformationinto one of global sport's mostmarketable names.

"Win, lose or draw we arefriends, even though it is busi-ness and he wants to win andI want to win," the 22-year-oldBlake has said of his friend-ship with Bolt.

Blake, nicknamed "TheBeast" for his stocky frame --standing 1.80m (5ft 11in) and

weighing 80kg -- said trainingalongside Bolt had been a bigboost to his career.

"Every time in training Iwant to win but he's alwaysthere. So I say, 'OK, how am Igoing to win on the big day?'

With Bolt having suffered arocky, injury-hit build-up toLondon, and Powell perpetu-ally injury-prone before bigevents, Blake -- who receiveda three-month ban in 2009 fortaking a drug that had a simi-lar chemical structure to thebanned tuaminoheptane -- hasthe perfect chance to shine.

He set two world leads of9.75 and 19.80sec at theOlympic trials, and promisedthat there was more to come.

"It's not over," he said. "Istill have the Olympics to go.I just wanted to keep perform-ing and keep going."

Track legend Michael John-son has said Blake was a "le-gitimate challenger" to Bolt, adding that the defendingchampion would have to be athis best.

PARIS (AFP) - British sailor Alex Thomson said Friday he

had broken the record for crossing the Atlantic solo from

west to east by more than 24 hours, making it from New

York to Cornwall in eight days, 22 hours and eight min-

utes. The previous record, which had stood for 10 years,

was 10 days, 55 minutes and 19 seconds, set by Swiss

sailor Bernard Stamm. Thomson, 38, set sail in his Hugo

Boss monohull from New York on July 17 just after 3:00

pm and arrived at Lizard Point, the southern tip of main-

land Britain, just after 1700 Friday, he said on his website.

"When I set off I had no idea if I was going to be able to do

it. And it has been hard. Lack of sleep, broken instruments

on the boat and constant exposure to the elements has re-

ally taken it out of me. But it's such a good feeling to have

beaten it by such a great margin." The World Sailing

Speed Record Council must still ratify the claim. The

record is officially known as the "West to East Ambrose

Lighthouse to Lizard Point Under 60-foot Single-Handed

Monohull Record, Male". The trip covers a distance of

about 2,800 nautical miles (5,200 kilometres, 3,200 miles).

Thomson said the trip was part of his training for the

Vendee Globe, a solo, non-stop, round-the-world race that
