OPINION

BJP trounces in state elections!• Yugal Parashar

‘Lotus’, the symbol of world’s largest political party, BJP, bloomed in full glory

in the just concluded state elections in 5 states of India, where Bhartiya Janta Party trounced back to retain all the four states with a clear majority. The biggest accomplishment of BJP in these historic and politically very crucial elections was, the win in the largest state of India, Uttar Pradesh, where party registered a thundering victory demolishing all the tall and flimsy claims of political pundits and main opposition rival, Samajwadi Party. This was first time in 37 years in Uttar Pradesh that a political party could retain government after governing for full five years term.

Another shock result of these elections

came from state of Punjab where Aam Admi Party created history by making a clean sweep in the state by completely routing the ruling Congress Party. The big names and stalwarts of

Punjab’s political arena crashed like a pack of cards, much to the dismay and disbelief of most political pundits. The performance of Bhartiya Janta Party in Punjab proved very disappointing once again and the blitzkrieg results of Aam Admi Party are worrisome for the national party for future. Its also a reason of worry for the government at centre since Punjab is a sensitive border state where India’s enemy countries are always looking for an opportunity to create trouble and disturbance in Punjab. Unfortunately, since its inception, Aam Admi Party is getting a lot of support from many anti-India elements and separatist forces, especially from those settled in overseas. So, the landslide victory of Aam

Admi Party is not that surprising from that perspective since a lot of people with vested interest have supported and voted to the party. Now it will be very interesting to see how AAP’s new Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Maan carries his newfound success for the benefit of the people of Punjab and for the country.

Bhartiya Janta Party’s resounding victory has come as big shock and a big tight slap on the faces of its opposition parties and the detractors alike. The nexus of anti BJP, anti-Modi/Yogi gang had already written obituaries for the party long before the elections in states. A lot of false hype was created in favour of many opposition parties by a section of media and a systematic smearing campaign to malign the image of Modi, Yogi and BJP was carried out ruthlessly. This was all done in the anticipation, that like always, these anti-BJP forces may succeed in their tactics this time again. Outcome of these state elections suggests that voter in India has matured over the years and cannot be fooled by gimmicks anymore, barring some exceptions. People now want quick delivery from the governments on their promises, and their expectations also have gone very high. Gone are the days when in India, political parties could

win election just by coining a new slogan each election. These leaders had nothing to do with people’s problems or their miseries and would only fill their coffers by looting the public money. After a long 60-65 years wait, people suddenly started having the feel of a government that is not only honest but also delivers more than it promised.

The election results of Uttar Pradesh are very important for any government at New Delhi, in fact in the political circles in India it is believed that Uttar Pradesh decides who will rule India. So, from that perspective, outcome of these results has paved the way for Narendra Modi for a second comeback in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This should be warning signals for all the anti-India forces because till Modi is at the helm of affairs, no divisive and anti-India force can ever succeed in its malicious plans. The impact of these results will go long way, both for the people of India and for BJP. These results have established BJP for another 20-25 years to take care of its people and to continue marching on the path of development. I hope that other political parties in India will take a lesson from BJP for being honest to its people and to delivering on their promises.

Chris Luxon applauds Simon Bridges’ contribution

National Party Leader Christopher Luxon has thanked retiring

MP Simon Bridges for his immense contribution to building a better New

Zealand.“Simon has been an absolute

champion for Tauranga, for New Zealanders and for the National Party over his 14 year career in Parliament. He was an excellent local MP, Minister, Leader of the National Party and colleague.

“As a Minister, Simon held portfolios focusing on the economy, infrastructure, transport, broadband and the Government’s finances.

“As Transport Minister, Simon relentlessly pushed for upgrades to core infrastructure to drive productivity and help Kiwis get from A to B faster and safer. New Zealanders have Simon to thank for many of our improved state highways, which will be part of his

lasting legacy.“Recently, Simon has been the

Opposition Finance Spokesperson, where he has been holding Labour to account for a cost of living crisis that is taking Kiwis backwards.

“Most importantly for me, since I became Leader Simon has been a trusted advisor and confidant. I am going to personally miss his contribution to the National Party caucus.

“I want to pay tribute to Simon’s relentless efforts to make New Zealand a better place – and also thank Natalie, Emlyn, Harry and Jemima for letting their husband and dad spend so much time away from home to help achieve that goal.

“Simon, go well. I wish you the very best.”

Jacinda follows the (political) science“Labour’s Covid-19 response has always

followed the science – political science”, says ACT Leader David Seymour.

“Three days after a TVNZ poll found 75 per cent of voters believed we should open the borders to negative tested travellers immediately, Labour has brought its reopening date for visitors forward by six

months.“Jacinda is making up the rules as she

goes along and none of it is based on evidence.

“While it’s welcome news, today’s announcement should be accompanied by an apology. Tourism, and parts of the country that depend critically on

tourism, have been devastated by the Government’s refusal to reconnect with the rest of the world.

“Two weeks ago, I asked Jacinda Ardern two simple questions.

“How many cases and hospitalisations would result from opening the border to all travellers immediately? She didn’t know.

“How many hospitalisations were admitted to hospital due to Covid-19 and how many were admitted for something else and tested positive while there? She didn’t know.

“If border decisions are being made to protect the hospital system, the Prime

Minister should be able to explain what analysis of the costs and benefits is driving her decisions.

“The reality is, Jacinda has been playing politics with people’s lives.

“It’s time to move on from Covid-19.“We should not keep ineffective and

costly rules because they make us feel comfortable if there’s no evidence that they work. If rules are not useful they should go, and it should be up to the Government that imposes them on us to explain why they should stay. It’s time to stop the fear and the control. It’s time to move on.” -ACT

Just make a decision, Prime Minister

“The Prime Minister is holding on to Covid-19 longer than

the saga of whether Ross and Rachel were on a break”, says ACT Leader David Seymour.

“We know Jacinda Ardern loves standing at the podium and making announcements. We know she needs Covid-19 to keep voters in a state of fear.

“But New Zealanders are frustrated and tired. We want to move on from fear and control.

“We welcome tourists coming back. But why not just get on with it now? There’s more risk in the community than at the border.

“She should have said, the border will be open from tomorrow, there’s no need to prepare because we’re dropping the restrictions. We estimate this will increase daily case numbers by 0.1 per cent.

“If tourists are coming back, we need to

drop restrictions. Instead of being ready with that announcement today, Jacinda says it’s coming later.

“Ardern will feed off her addiction to standing at the podium and making announcements.

“New Zealanders are fed up with being treated like children. We want to know what’s going on. We want to be able to plan our lives. We want to move on.” -ACT

Holi and 2022Once again many cultural festivals

around New Zealand have had to be cancelled, postponed or moved online due to the impact of Omicron around our country. I was particularly saddened to see that this year I and my fellow National Members of Parliament will be unable to join the community in celebration of Holi, one of my favourite Indian festivals.

Every year my amazing National volunteers and I always look forward to coming together with diverse communities from across New Zealand in the light hearted playful spirit of the Holi festival to throw coloured powder, to dance and sing with young and old alike, celebrating our friendships and our cultures. In particular, the Waitakere Holi festival has been a cherished occasion I’ve enjoyed attending since its inception. Holi is truly a pan-cultural celebration that shows off the very best spirit of New

Zealand. In acknowledging Holi this year I also

want to acknowledge the many people across New Zealand’s Indian community who have been unable to travel to their cultural homelands due to COVID-19, who have been separated from partners, parents, loved ones and friends due to our closed borders and to many who will be remembering those we have lost this past year. The spirit of the festival of colour to brighten our lives and to recognise the hardships we have endured is important and a significant way for us to denote the adversities we all have been facing together.

Whether it is the impact of the cost of living crisis on your household budget, the impacts of the border closures on your family or the impacts of crime in our communities harming your businesses, please know the National team are there

for you and we will not hesitate to hold the Government to account for their wasteful spending and heartless approach over the past two years. National will fix the damage that Labour has caused but there are immediate steps Labour could take right now to bring your families and businesses urgent tax relief and I implore the Government to do so urgently. It is clear Kiwis deserve some relief from the current cost of living crisis. I hope they listen to our call and take action today for the economic future of our country because every single dollar counts for those suffering right now.

You can reach out to me and my Parliamentary Staff if you need assistance during these uncertain times. Even if my team are required to self-isolate due to the impacts of Omicron we are available digitally and over the phone. We are all here to help regardless of what COVID-19

throws at us. However you and your households

celebrate Holi this year, may it be colourful and joyous.

Best wishes and Happy Holi!

Melissa LeeNational Member of Parliament National spokesperson for - Broadcasting & Media | Ethnic Communities

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has acknowledged the 51 people who

lost their lives in the March 15 terrorist attacks on the third anniversary of the mosque shootings.

“We will always remember and acknowledge the 51 shaheed who died as a result of the terrorist attack on 15 March. One way their memories are honoured is through the work that is taking place to make our country a better home for all who live here,” Jacinda Ardern said.

“Just 10 days after the attack, a Royal Commission of Inquiry was established which provided 44 recommendations aimed at ensuring Aotearoa New Zealand becomes a diverse, safe and inclusive country.

“Some actions, such as the establishment of a Ministry for Ethnic Communities and an annual hui on countering violent extremism and counter-terrorism, are up and running.

And work continues on many others, including the reform of gun licensing.

“In the aftermath of the attacks, New Zealand and the whole world were inspired by the strength and resolve of our Muslim community, who in the face of unspeakable grief decided to respond from a place of love, and not from a place of anger or fear.

“Three years on, Muslim communities across Aotearoa New Zealand continue to inspire us with their resilience and generosity.

“We must not leave them to shoulder this burden alone. Every New Zealander has a role to play and I urge them to continue to show the support they so publicly expressed in the days following March 15.

“Our Muslim community has always been open to dialogue and has often led the way as we work together to learn from that horror, so we can build a safer and more inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.

“We should all learn from their example and play our part to support efforts to combat Islamophobia. There is absolutely no place for it in our community,” Jacinda Ardern said.

A number of Government initiatives have been announced, are underway or completed as part of the Government response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry report. Those initiatives are:• Appointment

of Minister Little as Lead Coordination Minister for the response

• Establishment of Kāpuia, the Ministerial Advisory Group for the Government’s Response

• Establishment of the Ministry for Ethnic Communities

• Establishment of the Ethnic Communities Graduate Programme

• Deliver ongoing support and establishment of the Collective Impact Board

• Establishment of He Whenua Taurikura, New Zealand’s hui on countering terrorism and violent extremism

• Establishment of the National Centre of Research Excellence and Master’s scholarships on countering and preventing terrorism and violent extremism

• Implement a trial to support young children to improve their self-regulation, resilience, and social skills

• Establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry Ethnic and Faith Community Engagement Response Fund to ensure faith appropriate funding is available to communities to enable them to inform the Government’s response.

• Establishment of the New Zealand Police programme Te Raranga, The Weave, to improvements in Police’s frontline practice to identify, record, and manage hate crime

• Increasing the capacity of the Human Rights Commission

• Implementation of He Aranga Ake, a multi-agency preventative approach to identifying persons of concern, to reduce the likelihood of them causing harm associated with violent extremism.

• Strengthening New Zealand’s Counter Terrorism legislation

• Accession to the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime

• Progressing gun reform including banning the most dangerous firearms, implementing harsher penalties for gun crime and a tougher licensing system, and progressing work on a firearms register.

In late 2021, Cabinet agreed to a cross-government work programme that will see substantive work to address all 44 recommendations in the RCOI report commence or become part of agencies’ ongoing activities by 2023. This work programme has been directly influenced by feedback from Kāpuia, the Ministerial Advisory Group for the Government’s Response.

DPMC has published a progress tracker on its website to provide status updates on all 44 Royal Commission of Inquiry recommendations. - TIN Bureau

IMMIGRATION

Government offers shelter for around 4000 family members of Ukrainians in NZThe Government is ramping up an

unprecedented scale of humanitarian support for the Ukrainian refugee crisis by introducing a new 2022 Special Ukraine Policy.

The policy will allow Ukrainian born New Zealand citizens and residents here to bring in members of their Ukrainian family whose lives are at risk due to Russia’s aggression.

More than 2 million people have fled the war in Ukraine with the United Nations Refugee Agency labelling it the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.

“This is the largest special visa category we have established in decades to support an international humanitarian effort and, alongside the additional $4 million in humanitarian funding also announced today, it adds to a number of measures we’ve already implemented to respond to the worsening situation in Ukraine,” Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi said.

“New Zealand has moved quickly to condemn the brutal and intolerable invasion of Ukraine. Alongside other diplomatic measures, we have acted urgently to respond to Russia’s hostility by instituting travel bans, export controls, passing the Russia Sanctions Act 2022, and providing aid funding to support

crucial humanitarian work.“Our Ukrainian community in New

Zealand has also asked us to help in sheltering their family members who have been forced to flee their homes due to Russia’s unprovoked attack. We have listened, and today’s announcement will provide a pathway for their families’ safety.

“The 2022 Special Ukraine Policy will be open for a year and allow the estimated 1,600 Ukrainian-born citizens and residents in New Zealand to sponsor parents, grand-parents and adult siblings or adult children and their immediate family who are ordinarily resident in Ukraine to shelter safely here.

“It’s a two year visa to help people escape the current conflict and to shelter here in the hope they can return home when the war ends.

“This builds on previous supports we have provided through our immigration system, which included extensions for Ukrainian nationals in New Zealand whose visas expire before the end of the year, and ensuring Ukrainian citizens holding valid New Zealand visas offshore can enter immediately without waiting for our borders to reopen.

“Successful applicants will also have work rights or study rights if they are 18

years old or younger.”Eligible sponsors can now contact

Immigration New Zealand (INZ), who will prioritise sponsorship requests and visa applications. Once visa are granted, visa holders will have nine months to travel here,” Kris Faafoi said.

Sponsors will be responsible for arranging and funding travel to New Zealand, and accommodation and living costs once in New Zealand, and the government acknowledges the commitment the Ukrainian community is making to provide such support for their loved ones.

“INZ will quickly assess the sponsorship requests and then invite visa applications. Given the situation on the ground, applications can be completed by sponsors here and there will be a streamlined process for applicants. They will need to declare that they meet health and character requirements but documentation will not be required. No fees will be charged,” Kris Faafoi said.

“New Zealand was one of the first countries to give humanitarian support to Ukrainians when Russia invaded, and these latest measures demonstrate New Zealand’s ongoing concern and compassionate approach over the suffering being caused to Ukrainians,” Kris

Faafoi said.Registration to sponsor family

members can be done at: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/apply-for-a-visa/tools-and-information/support-family/new-temporary-visa-for-family-of-ukrainians-in-new-zealand

• Parents and wider family members offshore of Ukrainians in New Zealand able to come here under a new policy benefitting around 4,000 people

• The 2022 Special Ukraine Policy will be open for one year from today and enable Ukrainian-born New Zealand citizens and residents in New Zealand to sponsor Ukrainian family members and their immediate family

• Successful applicants will be granted a two-year work visa with work rights, and children will be able to attend school - TIN Bureau

Government reopens New Zealand for tourismThe Government is bringing forward

the date for opening the border to tourists in time for the Australian school holidays, in a move that will help accelerate the economic recovery from COVID-19, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced today.

From 11.59pm Tuesday 12 April, Australians will be able to travel to New Zealand isolation-free, and then two and a half weeks later from 11.59pm Sunday 1 May, vaccinated travellers from visa-waiver countries such as the large tourist markets of the UK, US, Japan, Germany, Korea and Singapore, and those with valid visitor visas, will be able to arrive.

“Closing our border was one of the first actions we took to stop COVID-19 two years ago. It did the job we needed. But now that we’re highly vaccinated and predicted to be off our Omicron peak, it’s now safe to open up,” Jacinda Ardern said.

“Reopening in time for the upcoming Australian school holidays will help spur our economic recovery in the short term and is good news for the winter ski season.

“Trans-Tasman travellers have historically made up 40 per cent of our international arrivals, with around 1.5

million Australians visiting each year.

“While we know it will take some time to see tourism scale up again, today’s announcement will be a welcome boost for our tourism operators who have done it harder than many over the last two years.

“In a world still battling COVID-19, travellers will be discerning about where they go in the short term. Our strong health response including the lowest death rate in the OECD over the past two years and our high rates of vaccination, alongside our reputation as a beautiful place to visit, will be an asset in this market.

“I am proud that New Zealand is a country which is able to provide a safe place for tourists to return to due to our strong health response to COVID-19.

“We can see from our record export prices for our goods that New Zealand is in demand internationally at the moment. A big focus of the rest of this year will be encouraging the world to buy our goods

and to visit.“During my international engagements

throughout this year, I will be helping to lead the charge to accelerate growth in our top export sectors – primary industries and tourism – by encouraging people to buy New Zealand made, and to come and enjoy our hospitality.

“An earlier reopening for tourism, and the air travel that brings, also increases capacity for our exports, helping to lower freight rates and the flow-on costs of goods that stems from that.

“We know that traveller numbers will be below pre-COVID levels for awhile and tourism globally will take time to rebound, but today’s announcement means were we’re ready to go, so haere mai welcome back,” Jacinda Ardern said. - TIN Bureau

Points to Note

• Tourists will not need to isolate on arrival, they will be required to have had a pre-departure test, with two further rapid antigen tests on day 0/1 and 5/6.

• Prior to COVID-19, tourism contributed 5.5 per cent to GDP, bringing in about $41 billion altogether, international making up $17 billion of that. It was also responsible for 8 per cent of our national workforce.

• Further advice will be received shortly on options for non-visa waiver travellers, which are currently due to come in from October.

Let us know

Trying times for fourth pillar! We are currently witnessing a world

that is passing through some very turbulent times, both in the political and the geographical sphere. We are already in the middle of a war that can escalate into a world war anytime since neither of the side in this war is showing any intentions of backing down. The role of both media and social media becomes even more crucial in these terribly unpredictable times. There are high chances that media will be used and abused by both sides to spread their propaganda, in a bid to garner support from the world. Already, the signs of this false propaganda have started appearing in the mainstream media world over.

The credibility of so-called big media houses of the world is seriously at stake, since most of these big names are backed by people with deep pockets and vested interests. One can observe a clear trend of false narratives being created by these big media house, every day. The poor common man is the easy victim of all this falsehood and fake narrative creations. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine is no exception to this media propaganda. False narratives are being created everyday by establishment supported media houses of America, Britain, and Europe to paint Russia a villain while the real truth is exactly opposite to that. If one must blame anyone for the ongoing war, it should be America or NATO who made poor Ukraine, a scapegoat in this war. Thousands of their military and civilians have already been killed in 20 day’s war, so far. So, who is going to benefit from these wars, no one except for the powerful arms manufacturer’s lobby of America and countries who are the puppets of America. It’s an open secret that these powerful arms lobby even decide the discourse of events in world’s oldest democracy. So, its indeed time, to free world media from the clutches of these merchants of death and destruction.

The similar situation prevails in most

part of the world where media houses have become mere mouthpiece of their masters or the puppets in the hands of governments. The pandemic situation in last two years has made this condition even worse for media since its fight has shifted more towards survival than reporting the truth. If the government of a country financially supports to a certain section of media, then these media houses are obliged to project a good image of them as a return favour. That’s where media loses its credibility and the trust of being a free and fair entity. Our own New Zealand is also no exception to it. Despite of government’s disappointing performance on most fronts during Covid period of two years, one would barely notice media asking any tough questions to government on its dismal performance. This is a kind of an unwritten agreement between both parties, you scratch my back, I scratch yours.

We are indeed a very small entity in the world of big media giants, who have the power to control the narratives of events. No place in the world is an exception to this rule, only the mighty and powerful rule this world. They control the media also, completely, and if any media tries to bring the truth out to the world, big daddies are always ready to shut them off. I think the biggest achievement of our four years journey has been our survival, despite all the turbulences and the adversities. A number of mainstream and ethnic media houses succumbed to the tough financial conditions, created due to deadly pandemic world over. We are one of those fortunate ones who could survive this onslaught of mother nature. Despite all the challenges on our way, we never compromised on one thing that we stand for, that is the trust of our readers in us. We endeavour to continue the path of free and fair journalism, a path that is free of any biases and any malice. We may be small as an entity but carry the power to topple the mighty and powerful.

NZ NEWS

One of the busiest central Auckland suburbs Sandringham, famous

for its Indian food joints and grocery shops is buzzing most time of the day and even more in the evening with crowd of shoppers and diners alike. This lustre and splendour of rich Indian culture in this part of town has now become the latest target of criminals and thugs, who are now frequenting this area more often. There has been a spate of robberies & break-ins in this small patch of around 50 shops on the Sandringham Road in Sandringham. The most worrying element in these criminal incidents is that criminals are now committing these crimes in broad

day light and in the middle of all the hustle & bustle.

One such incident took place at a corner shop, at Kitchener Road on Tuesday 15th march around 6 pm. A young, tall man wearing mask and hoody entered the ‘FUME store’, a shop selling vape products like hukkah and vape flavours. Man took out a big knife and pointing at Ashok Quatra (who was on duty at that time) asked him to raise his hands and not to obstruct him in his work. Terrified Ashok did not resist much, and the offender left swiftly with the loot. Other partner in the shop told The Indian News that this is third incident at this shop in as

many weeks. In the same shop, break-ins have happened twice in three weeks’ time and the total loss of theft and damage done to the shop runs between 35-40k already. Both owners are terrified with the latest incident of crime and offenders so frequently coming back to repeat offend. NZ Police is notified in every incident that have taken place but so far, yet no breakthrough has been made about any incident.

In the same block of shops, another robbery took place at knife point on night of Monday 17th March where a group of 3-4 youngsters stashed away with the loot. A meeting has been called by a group of business owners to discuss this

lawlessness and about inaction of Police to stop these crimes.Another incident of thuggeryIn this incident on 13th March at around 9:30 in the evening at Broadway in New market, a passer-by approached to this young man, Sahil Vohra. His car did not start after he came back from the gym. When passer-by told Sahil that he is a car mechanic, and he can help to start his car, poor Sahil trusted him and asked him in desperation to help him to start his car. Sahil thought he was some gentle soul who just stopped to help him with his skills but as soon as this man started the car, he took no time to run away with the car. Shocked, Sahil was taken aback with incident, and he ran after the car and yelled for help, even to some cops on the way, but they all looked the other way. This guy jumped the red light on the intersection there. Sahil is very devasted with this act of thuggery and with the lame duck attitude of Police. He has lost his expensive laptop, Indian Passport, his house keys, and other expensive personal belongings. Sahil says he is devastated with the incident and is very disappointed with the attitude of law keepers of NZ. Sahil is urging the community and any witnesses of this incident to come forward to help him recover his belongings. - TIN Bureau

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Tuesday welcomed the

Karnataka High Court decision upholding Hijab ban in educational institutions saying, 'conspiracy to push back Muslim young girls has fallen flat'.

"Conspiracy to push back Muslim young girls has fallen flat. This is not just a women's issue but an issue concerning society and the society that pushbacks its women ultimately suffer", said Arif Mohammad Khan. As Karnataka High Court deliberated over the issue of Hijab being an essential religious practise in Islam, Khan said Islam itself defines what's essential to the practice of the faith, so the judiciary's job has become easy.

"Hijab has been mentioned seven times in the Quran, but not in the context of the dress code," he added.

A bench of Karnataka High Court comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit, and Justice JM Khazi said that no case is made out for invalidating the February 5 government order.

The Hijab row had erupted in January this year when the Government PU College in Udupi allegedly barred six girls wearing the hijab from entering the college. Following this, the girls sat in protest outside the college over being denied entry.

After this, boys of several colleges in Udupi started attending classes wearing saffron scarves. This protest spread to other parts of the state leading to a massive uproar.

As a result, the Karnataka government said that all students must adhere to the uniform, and it banned both hijab and saffron scarves. On February 5, the pre-University education board released a circular stating that the students can only wear the uniform approved by the school administration and no other religious attire will be allowed in colleges. -TIN Bureau

Goa: Pramod Sawant arrives in Delhi, to meet central leadership to consult next course of action

Goa acting Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday

said that he is in the national capital to meet the central leadership and consult them over the next course of action in the state.

Speaking to media at Goa Sadan, Sawant said, "I am here to meet the central leadership and consult them over the next course of action in the state." Sawant had earlier stated that the new government will be formed after the election of the leader of the legislative party in the presence of the Central observer of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BJP Parliamentary Board has appointed Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar as the central observer for Goa and Union Minister of State for Fisheries and Animal Husbandry L Murugan has been made the co-observer.

On March 12, Sawant tendered his resignation to Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai at Raj Bhawan in Panaji to pave way for the formation of the new government after the BJP won the popular mandate in

the state. The BJP emerged as the single largest

party in Goa, winning 20 seats in the 40-member state Assembly, leaving Congress with 11 seats at a distant second position. The BJP fell one seat short of the majority figure in Goa but is set to retain power in the state with the help of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak (MGP) and independent candidates.

According to Election Commission, the BJP got 33.31 per cent vote share followed by Congress (23.46 per cent), MGP (7.60 per cent), AAP (6.77) and Trinamool Congress (5.21 per cent). -TIN Bureau

Replying to the debate on the Assam Governor's speech in the budget session of the State Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister said that, compared to the

Oil prices end below USD 100 per barrel on Russia-Ukraine diplomacy efforts-

Moscow-Kyiv negotiations continue amidst "Fundamental contradictions"The fourth round of talks between

Russia and Ukraine that started on Monday will continue through Wednesday, even as a Ukrainian negotiator spoke of "fundamental differences" between the two sides.

"We will continue tomorrow... There are fundamental contradictions. But, of course, there is room for compromise," Volodymyr Zelenskyy's top aide Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on his Telegram channel as reported by Sputnik News Agency. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier today that talks between the

Ukrainian and Russian delegations should continue saying that it is difficult, but important as the positions of the sides sound more realistic now.

"Everyone needs to work in their place, including our representatives in the delegation at the talks with the Russian Federation. This is important, difficult, but important. Because any war ends with an agreement. Meetings continue, as I am informed, the positions at the negotiations sound more realistic. But more time is needed for the decisions to be in the interests of Ukraine," Zelenskyy

said in his video message on Telegram.Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir

Putin held a discussion with the European Council President Charles Michel where the two also talked about the ongoing negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

"Vladimir Putin outlined his fundamental assessments of the ongoing negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian representatives to develop agreements taking into account well-known Russian requirements. At the same time, it was noted that Kyiv does not demonstrate a serious attitude towards

finding mutually acceptable solutions," the Kremlin said in a statement.

The two also discussed the situation with respect to the conflict, as well as humanitarian aspects, including measures to evacuate civilians, the Kremlin statement said.- TIN Bureau

Oil prices tumbled more than 6 per cent, adding to Monday's drop of

more than 5 per cent, as both the New York- and London-traded benchmarks settled below the key USD 100 per barrel mark for the first time since the start of Russia's "special military operation" in Ukraine.

Crude prices were also pressured by a ramp-up in new coronavirus cases in major consumer China and over concerns about near-term demand expressed by oil exporter group OPEC. At Tuesday's settlement, US crude oil's West Texas Intermediate, or WTI, the benchmark was down USD 6.57, or 6.4 per cent, at USD 96.44 a barrel. It earlier fell to USD 93.56,

its lowest since February 25 - the day after the Russian operation in Ukraine began. WTI surged to 2008 highs of USD 130.50 on March 7.

London-traded Brent crude oil settled down USD 6.99, or 6.5 per cent, at USD 99.91 a barrel. Earlier in the session, Brent fell to USD 97.50, also its lowest since February 25. Brent hit a 2008 high of USD 139.12 on March 7.

Diplomatic activity quickened on multiple fronts on Tuesday as the conflict in Ukraine entered its 20th day, media reports said, adding that the leaders from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia were travelling to Kyiv on Tuesday.

On the OPEC front, the 13-member

Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which leads the wider 23-member OPEC+ alliance, said its 2022 forecasts for demand growth, supply growth and global economy were "under assessment" due to shifting market conditions. The 13-member cartel said its output rose by 440,000 barrels daily in February,

exceeding its pledged increase under the OPEC+ deal. -TIN Bureau

China refuses aircraft parts deliveries to Russia

After the Russian aviation sector was hit by crippling Western sanctions

for war against Ukraine, China refused to supply Russia with aircraft parts.

For the supply of aeroplane parts, Russia now plans to seek assistance from India, Turkey and other countries, reported Global Defence Corp. Russia's air transport agency Rosaviatsiya was considering various alternatives for aircraft parts supply after China refused to supply aircraft parts amid sanctions, Russian news agency Interfax reported.

Rosaviatsia official Valery Kudinov was quoted by Interfax as saying, "We have tasked airlines with looking for a possible supplier of parts on their own. As far as I know, there is information that a request has been made to China, but China has refused to do it.

"We will be looking ( for opportunities) in other countries. Perhaps, via our partners, Turkey, or via India. Every company will reach an agreement on its own while we (Rosaviatsiya) will merely help legalise these parts."

Most of the aircraft used by Russian airlines are manufactured by Boeing and

Airbus. Earlier this month, Boeing and Airbus announced that they will stop aircraft spare parts supply to Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine.

Apart from these two, many other companies in the aviation sector have cut off their ties with the country, reported Global Defence Corp.

Recently, Russia's foreign ministry expressed its concerns over the safety of Russian passenger carriers. Earlier this week, Russian flag carrier Aeroflot suspended all its international flight services, excluding neighbouring Belarus.

Meanwhile, in retaliation to the mounting sanctions imposed on it by the West, Russia has now banned exports of aircraft and drones, among others, reported TASS. -TIN Bureau

Jen Baird, chief executive of REINZ said “Market sentiment has shifted and with

pressure to buy easing, we are seeing less competition, less urgency and fewer sales.”

As per the latest ASB Housing Confidence Survey, 77 percent of respondents believed interest rates will continue to rise rather than remain stable. Although the housing boom may be ending, there is still a hangover to cope with. ASB senior economist Mike Jones says, “If house prices do back pedal a little this year and wages jump as we expect, housing affordability should look a little

better by the end of the year. The Reserve Bank has already begun

the process of withdrawing the stimulus that pushed housing and wider inflation to such lofty peaks.

According to Reserve Bank analysis, if mortgage rates increase to 5% (two-year fixed rates are now just below this level), roughly 20% of first-home purchasers may encounter serviceability stress. At 6%, this figure would almost double to nearly 50%, including existing owner-occupiers and investors.

RBNZ now forecasts that the official

cash rate will peak at 3.5 percent in April 2023, up from its previous projection of 3%. Presently, the OCR is set at 1%. Here it is worth mentioning that fixed rates may not rise directly in proportion to rise in OCR.

While banks have historically been better equipped to choose whether or not to lend money in the first place, it is unfortunate that the new CCCFA legislation revisions hold most of the burden for making mortgages even more difficult to get.

For many people, the cost of maintaining a mortgage is not the primary barrier to owning a home, according to a recent CoreLogic home affordability data.

The house prices continue to increase - albeit at a more moderate pace, there

are more properties on the market. Prices rose only marginally nationally, up 0.6 per cent from January's $880,000 to $885,000 last month.

Nationally, a typical house climbed

in value by just 2.3 percent during the last three months to the end of February, down from the 6.1 percent quarterly gain seen in January, with the national average currently standing at $1,053,483.

While prices remain strong, increasing annually in all regions, the number of sales continues to trend downward and an influx of stock across New Zealand is easing demand side pressure, which may in turn further ease price growth in the coming months.

In the short term, higher property prices and increased LVR regulations will create significant difficulties for low-deposit borrowers, but those challenges will soon start to ease. The CCCFA laws, on the other hand, are not going away anytime soon, which requires more effort to get bank-ready.

To be bank-ready, you must first organise your finances, which includes clearing up your credit. Pay off credit cards as quickly as possible and close any unused credit limits or accounts.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday denied the request

filed by the Football Union of Russia (FUR) to stay the execution of the UEFA Executive Committee's decision to suspend all Russian teams and clubs from its competitions until further notice.

Consequently, the Challenged decision remains in force and all Russian teams

and clubs continue to be suspended from participation in UEFA competitions. Russia is still looking to overturn the FIFA ban that would allow them to take part in World Cup qualifying playoff matches scheduled for the end of this month.

"The CAS decisions on the FUR's requests to stay the execution of the FIFA decisions for the duration of the CAS

proceedings are likely to be issued at the end of this week," the statement by the CAS said.

Russia is due to play Poland in a World Cup qualifier later this month, with the winner of the tie playing either Sweden or the Czech Republic for a place at the finals in Qatar.

On February 28, following the initial

decisions adopted by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.-TIN

SAFF U-18 Women's C'ship: India thrash Nepal 7-0 in opener

The India U-18 girls kicked off their SAFF U-18 Championship campaign

with a bang as they defeated Nepal 7-0 in Jamshedpur at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur on Tuesday. India next play Bangladesh on March 19.

The first goal of the night was scored by Priyanka Sujeesh in the 15th minute while Lynda Kom scored two more in the 17th and 35th minutes respectively. In the second-half, India scored back-to-back goals -- Apurna scoring in the 69th minute, followed by Purnima in the 77th minute. Lynda Kom scored her second in the 35th minute - this time off another magnificent cross from outside the box by defender Ritu Devi.

Lynda almost completed her hat-trick in the 42nd minute but it narrowly missed the target, as India headed to the half-time enjoying a three-goal cushion.

March 17, 2022 19 New Zealand's most trusted Indian media group | The Indian NewsFESTIVE

No public celebrations on Holi in New Zealand, this year! The popular, ancient Hindu festival

of colours, Holi, falls on Friday 18th March this year. As per the Hindu calendar, Holi falls on the Purnima day, the full moon night of month of Phalguna. The festival signifies the arrival of ‘spring season’ and is also known as ‘festival of love’ for the message of bonhomie and brotherhood it spreads across communities.

Holi basically is the festival of northern India where the legend of Bhakt Prahlad and Holika is marked by lighting of bonfire and people singing and dancing around fire. The next day of Holi is celebrated with more fervour and passion and people apply colours to each other and drench

each other with coloured water. The biggest centre of Holi festival in the world is the birthplace of Lord Krishna at Mathura. In this part of the world the festival is celebrated for full one week where in countryside village folks would gather every evening at a street corner and sing and dance to the tunes of Dafali till late in the night. The significance of arrival of spring season and the winter crop getting ready to cut down is also deeply attached with this festival.

The festival has taken a global recognition now since Indians are spread all over the world. In many countries like Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji, South Africa, Surinam, Guyana, UK,

Australia, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada and Netherlands, Holi celebration is a big event on their calendar. In New Zealand, Holi is one of the main festivals across the country. Many temples and community organisations get involve celebrating the festival of colours every year where thousands of people from across different communities take part. Unfortunately, this year in New Zealand due to the surge in Omicron cases, all organisations across the board have decided to cancel all public gatherings. Holi is a festival which is celebrated in large gatherings of people, who apply colours to each other. The

biggest event in Auckland that takes place at ISCON temple in Kumeu each year will not take place this year. Most temples, including the oldest temple, Bharatiya Mandir in Sandringham, have cancelled all public gatherings and the Holi celebration for public, this year. Mandir appeals to all devotees to celebrate festival in small groups of families and friends taking care of all Covid protocols. Mandir Management is of the view that safety and well being of its devotees is paramount to them and festivals can be celebrated when the situation is conducive to it. -TIN Bureau ( Picture courtesy Hare Krishna Auckland (ISKCON)

Onehunga’s wealth of creative talent will be on display for all to see

throughout March at the Toi Onehunga pop-up gallery.

Toi Onehunga, which is being run by the Onehunga Business Association

(OBA), showcases some of the many amazing artists who call Onehunga and its surrounding area home.

More than 30 artworks will be on display, ranging from paintings and photography through to ceramics and sculpture.

The event is curated by Auckland artist Isaac Trebilco, who has selected a diverse range of works from more than a dozen local artists.

“Toi Onehunga includes works that explore the rich heritage of the Onehunga area, from maunga to sea, as well as subjects from further afield," says Isaac.

“Selecting the works that will be on display was an enjoyable but tough task. We received lots of great submissions, and

I’m excited for people to see the works in a gallery setting in the heart of Onehunga.”

Since 2019 Isaac has been working on a series of portraits depicting mana whenua from Ihumātao, which will be displayed at Toi Onehunga.

Isaac’s work also features as part of WWF-New Zealand’s ‘Whale Tale’ 2022 immersive public art trail, with his work entitled ‘Our Hands’ located near the gallery on Onehunga Mall.

‘Our Hands’ features handprints from a diverse range of people representing the community. This design is a snapshot of present-day Onehunga, while showing a strong connection to its history and the diversity of its people.

And from 7-13 March, Toi Onehunga will also be home to a ‘migrating’ Whale Tale – ‘Mauri’, painted by Monty Collins.

Amanda Wellgreen, Onehunga Town Manager, says: “Following on from the last Onehunga pop-up gallery event in 2019, Toi Onehunga will once again showcase the amazing talent from our area.

“If you’ve always fancied yourself as an art lover, visit Toi Onehunga to view beautiful work of all shapes and sizes, or even buy a piece of original art.”

“As well as enjoying great art at Toi Onehunga and on the Whale Tale trail, you can make a day of it and see what Onehunga has to offer – from shopping to suit all tastes through to top quality cuisine.

Toi Onehunga is situated at 204 Onehunga Mall, Onehunga, Auckland. Entry to the gallery is free, and open to the public from 2-27 March 2022 on Wednesdays/Thursdays (12pm-4pm); Fridays (12pm-6pm); and weekends (10am-4pm). To find out more see www.onehunga.nz/toi.

Beyond the Big Bang - Science and Spirituality

Until recently the scientific community believed that everything has

happened because of the Big Bang. But now some are saying, “It was not just one, many bangs must have happened.” It has been held that some billions of years ago, this particular Bang happened, which has resulted in all these planets and this

universe. But now they are saying this Bang is not the only one.

It was amusing for me to hear this because these theories are beginning to sound just like yogic lore, something that we have always known from within. In the yogic system, we do not believe that you can ever go out into the existence and find out everything that is

there – a belief which scientists have also come to. When the scientist says it is an endless universe, he is obviously saying you can never find out what it is. You can never travel from end to end and say, “Okay, this is existence.” This is something that has been said thousands of years ago.

And so, the best way to know this

existence is by turning inward. Whatever has happened in the existence, all of it is in some way recorded in this mini-universe, the body.

Let me tell you how yoga explains creation from within. This is a dialectical culture. Because it is speaking about a dimension which is not in our logical perception, it is best to speak in dialectical ways.

Shiva is sleeping. When we say “Shiva” here, we are not talking about a person or the yogi. “Shiva” here refers to “that which is not”; that which is nascent. “That which is not” can only sleep.

As Shiva sleeps, Shakti comes looking for him. She wants to dance and play with him. Initially, he does not wake up. After some time, he does. Anyone who is in deep slumber, if you wake him up, he will get a little angry. If you were in deep sleep and someone came and nudged you,

it would not matter how beautiful that person was, you would get angry. So he gets angry, roars and rises. That is why his first form and his first name is Rudra. The word “Rudra” means one who roars.

I asked a cosmologist, “If there is a series of Bangs, could it be a roar? Was it just one bang or was it a continuous thing?” He thought about it and said, “It cannot be just one, it must have been longer than just one moment.” And I said “Why are you calling it a Bang? It is a Roar, isn’t it?” If you ever drive a motorcycle without the silencer, you will see it will go “bang, bang, bang,” but if you throttle up, it will roar. A roar is a composite expression of many bangs.

What is being perceived now in a phenomenally roundabout way was perceived a long time ago. Every human being can perceive this if they look deep enough. -Isha Foundation New Zealand

The Kashmir Files: Anupam Kher reacts to Kerala Congress's statement on exodus of Kashmiri PanditsActor Anupam Kher attended the press

conference of his recently released film 'The Kashmir Files' in New Delhi on Monday, along with the film's director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and actor-producer Pallavi Joshi.

The film has brought the spotlight on the killings and forced exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits from the valley in the late 1980s and afterwards. Amid the buzz, the Kerala unit of Congress claimed in a tweet, now deleted, that more Muslims were killed in Jammu and Kashmir during 1990-2007 than Pandits.

Responding to this after the press conference, Kher told media, "The kind of love that the storm has created from this film, the kind of people who are going to watch this film, what Kerala Congress has said is not important. I think they are trying to find what are the opinions of the actors or director of the film. I don't want to give them that pleasure."

He added, "There is a democracy in our country, everyone has constitutional rights, so let them speak. But slowly, it seems like no one is listening to them because they do not talk about anything in the nation's interest. They do not talk about how to take the country forward. There is destruction in everything they say, there is no constructive thing. So, why should we talk about such people who have no love for the country and have no love for the people who have been living as refugees in their own country? I pity them.

Unfortunately, they are in very pathetic condition."

Kher also talked about his crucial role in representing the Kashmiri Pandits.

He said, "'Kashmir Files' is not just a film for me, it is a wound for me that has not been filled in life for years and it might never be filled. The kind of lives my relatives, friends have lived 32 years back, when they were thrown out from their houses, environment, jobs, city and villages. Later their tragedy was not acknowledged by the people in the country. I was representing all those 5 lakh people whose exodus took place on January 19, 1990."

He also shared his acting process of taking inspiration from his personal life.

He said, "Pushkar Nath was my father's name and I kept this name in the movie so before every shot, I thought of him that if he would've been in this situation then how he would've reacted. This thought process became realistic for me."

Kher concluded by sharing that he tried his best to feel the pain of the people he portrayed.

"I say without any diffidence that my tears in

every shot were real. After every shot, I have cried dreadfully. Not because of me, but because of all those people. After doing a scene, I would go to the hotel, eat food and take shower, but what about the people who I have portrayed. Were they killed or did they flee away in that truck or were their sisters and mothers were raped? That thought used to make my heart tremble," he signed off.

The film, which was released in theatres on March 11, also stars Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi in pivotal roles. -TIN Bureau
