DeterminersDeterminers are words placed in front of a noun to make it clear what the noun refers to. • to define something or someone; • to state the amount of people, things or other nouns; • to state possessives; • to state something or someone is specific; • state how things or people are distributed; • to state the difference between nouns; • to state someone or something is not specific .

"The dog barked at the boy.“

"These apples are rotten.“

“There are twenty-five people in the room. ”

“Jane's brother is married to John's sister.”

Determiners

There are different types of determiners.

Articles: a, an , the

Demonstratives: this, that, these, those, which etc.

Possessives: my, your, our, their, his, hers, whose, my friend's, our friends', etc.

Quantifiers: few, a few, many, much, each, every, some, any etc. Números: um, dois, três, vinte, quarenta Numbers: one, two, three, twenty, forty

Ordinals: first , second , 1st 2nd, 3rd, last , next , etc.

Possessives: my, your, his, her, its, our, theirPossessive pronouns and possessive adjectives show who the thing belongs to.

e.g.: Her brother is married to his sister.

The definite article: the

e.g.: The boy is good student.

Demonstratives: this, that, these, thoseThe demonstratives this, that, these, those ,show where an object or person is in relation to the speaker.This (singular) and these (plural) refer to an object or person near the speaker. That (singular) and those (plural) refer to an object or person further away. It can be a physical closeness or distance as in:

e.g.: Who owns that house? (distant) Is this John's house? (near)

Determiners

The indefinite article:

Use 'a' with nouns starting with a consonant (letters that are not vowels), 'an' with nouns starting with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u)

e.g.: A boy; An apple; A car; An orange; A house…

Determiners

The cardinal numbers (one, two, three, etc.) are adjectives referring to quantity, and the ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.) refer to distribution.

e.g.: There are twenty-five people in the room. He was the fourteenth person to win the award since 1934.

DeterminersLike articles, quantifiers are words that precede and modify nouns. They tell us how many or how much. Contagem e substantivos não-Count . Selecting the correct quantifier depends on your understanding the distinction between Count and Non-Count Nouns . For our purposes, we will choose the count noun trees and the non-count noun dancing :The following quantifiers will work with count nouns : muitas árvores many trees algumas árvores a few trees poucas árvores few trees várias árvores several trees um par de árvores a couple of trees nenhuma das árvores none of the trees

The following quantifiers will work with non-count nouns : não muito dançar not much dancing um pouco de dança a little dancing dança pouco little dancing um pouco de dança a bit of dancing uma boa dose de dança a good deal of dancing muita dança a great deal of dancing não dança no dancing

DeterminersThe following quantifiers will work with both count and non-count nouns : todas as árvores / dança all of the trees/dancing algumas árvores / dança some trees/dancing a maioria das árvores / dança most of the trees/dancing árvores suficientes / dança enough trees/dancing um monte de árvores / dança a lot of trees/dancing muitas árvores / dança lots of trees/dancing abundância de árvores / dança plenty of trees/dancing a falta de árvores / dança a lack of trees/dancing
