    The Philemon Foundation was founded at the end of2003, and since this time, has made critical contribu-tions to a number of ongoing projects preparing forpublication the still unpublished works of C. G. Jung.The Foundation is grateful to its donors who havemade this work possible.Jung History, which will

    appear semi-annually, will provide accounts of someof the ongoing research supported by the PhilemonFoundation and other news.     On behalf of the Board of Directors it givesme the greatest pleasure to introduce this inauguralissue ofJung History: A Semi-Annual Publication of thePhilemon Foundation. Jung History is the quintessenceof the Philemon Foundation, a review of work inthe field of Jung history together with the activitiesof our scholar editors who ably and comprehen-sively pursue our mission: To prepare for publica-tion in the most accurate and unexpurgated fashionpossible the unpublished words and writings ofC. G. Jung. The Philemon Foundation is anon-profit organization founded in 2003 with theaim of preparing for publication a Complete Works ofJung, in contradistinction to the present CollectedWorks of Jung. You may be as surprised as I was tolearn how much unpublished material there is from

    Jungs hand: manuscripts, notes and correspondenc-es, and, of course, the legendary Red Book, a literary

    work of psychology which forms the visionarybasis of Jungs professional work. There are, as well,unpublished seminars and discussions, which we arenow in a position to reconstruct more fully thanever from previously unavailable notes by studentswho participated in them. By reading thesepages, requesting a brochure or visiting our websitewww.philemonfoundation.org, you will learn that wehave an international team of scholars preparing the

    Some of these editions will appear in late 2005 andearly 2006; further projects are in the planningstages and will commence in the coming year. Weanticipate that our work will take upwards of thirtyyears to complete and will likely reach thirty addi-tional volumes beyond the Collected Works, the eventualretranslation of which we intend to sponsor.

    The Philemon Foundation has the completesupport of the Heirs of C. G. Jung. This has helpedus to plan for the most complete and historicallyaccurate scholarly editions possible so that thosewho read Jungs works in future generations maycome to their own informed conclusions about

    Jungs ideas, observations, and interpretations of thepsyche. The new editions will not preempt otherapproaches and interpretations from the existing

    corpus of Jungs work. No current editions ofJungs works need disappear; all existing contractualrelations between the Jung estate and their publish-ers remain unchanged. The Foundation is a fullyindependent organization, and it is not involved inthe commercial exploitation of the existing CollectedWorks of Jung. Materials in the Jung archives at theETH remain available for all scholars to consult onapplication in accordance with the terms of use of

    the ETH archives. The Philemon Foundation andanyone associated with it have no role in grantingaccess or citation permissions for this material.

    An undertaking like this is necessarily costlyand requires the support of many individuals. Weare already fortunate in having received generousdonations from a number of people who believe inwhat we are trying to do. Now, we would like toreach out to the wider professional, lay and academ-ic communities and ask for help with this greatendeavor. There are two immediate ways tohelp. The first is financially by making a donationthat will enable our scholar editors to continue theirpresent projects and begin new ones. The secondis to spread the good word to other friends of

    understandings. In the dialogue with White, thiseventually caused a major and, as it turned out,insoluble conflict. Theology and psychology arequite distinct disciplines that proceed from widelydifferent assumptions and employ incompatiblemethodologies, and the consequences of this Jungand White did not know quite as profoundly at theoutset as at the conclusion of their exchanges. Onthe question of evil, their thoughts diverged irrevo-

    cably. When Jung put forward his most distinctiveand forthright psychological reflections on Biblicaltheology and Christian doctrine inAnswer to Jobwhich was also his answer to White! much of itflew directly in the face of the received doctrine thathad anchored Whites life and career.

    Many of Jungs more substantial letters in thiscorrespondence have been published previously inthe collection edited by Gerhard Adler. None of

    Whites side of the correspondence, however, haspreviously been available. Until now, one had toread between the lines and do a lot of guesswork todiscern the fullness of their personal relationshipand the details of their intellectual exchange. Withthis publication of the complete correspondence, itbecomes quite evident that the engagement withWhite was for Jung an essential dialogue that con-tributed importantly to his late writings. The tor-

    tured argument with White overthe place of evil in theological doc-trines of God (their ongoing dis-pute over the infamous privatio bonidoctrine) pushed Jung toward refin-ing and deepening his critique ofclassical theology, which thenappeared in full force inAion(1951) andAnswer to Job (1952).White, one could say, sharpened

    Jungs sword by dueling with him for several yearsbefore he entered the public arena with his pub-lished writings.

    For White, Jung was a teacher and the very fig-ure of an archetypal wise old man. They first metwhen Jung was 70 years old. For Jung, White was araven (see Jungs second letter in the correspon-dence), like the one sent by God to Elijah in thewilderness, come to feed him with spiritual nourish-

    ment from abroad. Jung had longed for this kind of

    White is the third major collec-tion of Jungs correspondencesto be published. The first wasthe famous exchange betweenJung and Freud, edited by

    William McGuire. The secondwas that between Jung

    and Wolfgang Pauli, thephysicist, edited by C. A. Meier. Now in this corre-spondence with White we see Jung in dialogue witha theologian.

    All three collections of letters tell us a great dealabout the human matrix underlying the formal the-oretical and scientific writings that in some measure

    derive from and surely are deeply influenced bythese important relationships. With respect toJungs side of the equation, in each collection, too,we discover a different side of his complex person-ality and another facet of his brilliant mind. It isnoteworthy that he was able to carry on such signif-icant exchanges with three figures of the higheststanding in their own fields of expertise, each havinga completely different background and specialization.Each set of letters shows a complex andpersonal human connection between thecorrespondents as well as an intellectualdialogue of the highest caliber.

    From these letters between Jung andWhite, we can see that the main subjectmatter of their discussions was the rela-tionship between psychology and religion.However, the correspondence also reflectsthe trajectory of their personal relation-

    ship, from the high excitement of mutual recogni-tion at the beginning, through the realization ofcrucial differences in attitude and philosophicalcommitments in the middle, to a mutual feeling ofbetrayal and misunderstanding as its end. At lastthere is a note of empathy and healing, but thatcame muted and late.

    Psychology was, of course, Jungs chief concern,and all other interests eventually were inspected and

    connection with a theologian. Not that Jung woulduse White as a confessor or a professor, although hedid pick his brain on various fine points ofThomistic thought and Catholic doctrine, aboutwhich White was an expert. Rather, Jung looked onWhite as an invaluable interlocutor on matters thathad preoccupied and bothered him for nearly hiswhole lifetime. Growing up in the home of a pastor

    father who could not answer his difficult questionsabout the meaning of such abstruse theological doc-trines as the Trinity (see MDR, pp. 52ff.), Jungfound in White a Catholic father who could notonly match his questions with keen answers fromhis learned intellect but who also could challengehim to change some of his (by this time) ingrainedattitudes and views. Strangely, however, Jung alsodiscovered in White a similar set of conflicts to

    those he had earlier perceived in his father, PaulJung, who was torn apart by the battle raging in hisday between science and religion. As with his father,so too with White, Jung was not able to solve theother mans dilemmas. For himself Jung had founda solution to the problem of the historical split inthe Christian West between matter and spirit in atype of psychology that has the potential to heal it.

    Jungs frail health during the years of correspon-ding with White is a constant theme in these letters.

    Yet, paradoxically, he outlived the younger man bya year.

    Jung was correct in his intuition that White wasa godsend, for it was through Whites provocationsthat he produced some of his most impassionedand stimulating writings. This is not a particularlyhappy story, though, for in the end each man feltrather abused and misunderstood by the other.

    White died with his Christian faith intact, per-haps even strengthened by his engagement withAnalytical Psychology. Jung passed away in anotherstate of grace. In the end, they were of differentfaiths.

    chologists has long been one of suspicion, if notoutright hostility. In Whites case, as a Catholicreligious and priest, and a teacher of future priests,the professional stakes were especially high. After hefirst visited Jung in Bollingen, White dreamed theywere sailing at great speed among rocks. Jung wroteback, We are indeed on an adventurous and dan-gerous journey!1 One might suspect that a philo-sophically trained theologian and a medically

    trained psychologist, having been schooled in suchdifferent modes of reaching and defending conclu-sions, would quickly encounter theoretical prob-lems, their basic assumptions being so mismatched.In fact, this turned out to be the case with Jung andWhite. They experienced difficulties at the levels of

    doctrine and interpretation. Underneath, control-ling both these levels of discourse, their

    epistemologies (theories of knowledge)

    were in conflict.2

    Jung is firmly committed to a theoryof knowledge that springs from a neo-Kantian philosophy and views the soul

    (or psyche) as the primary organ ofknowing. Jung always starts from and

    returns to his conviction that the psyche is theonly available lens through which images of realityare experienced and interpreted. By this theoryeverything even such unfathomable realities asthe soul, nature, and God is known subjectively,experientially or, as Jung likes to say, empirically. Bycontrast Whites theological method begins withthe churchs three classic sources of authority: reve-lation, tradition, and reason, to which he adds animportant fourth: experience. This fourth source ofknowledge, experience, did not occupy the sameplace of importance for many of WhitesDominican contemporaries. But it was, as I argue

    elsewhere,3 a very important part of Whites theology,and the part which made him genuinely open to

    Jungs thought.Jungs epistemology made him suspicious of

    most theologians, for what he saw as their tendencyto dodge reality and flee into metaphysical realmswhere they could assert doctrinal and credal claimsas true, whether or not these claims made a prag-matic connection with experience, in a subjective or

    psychological sense. At times Jung was merely

    ictor Whitewas a thinker. He

    was 27 years youngerthan Jung but was also,

    like Jung, a pioneer inhis field, which was

    Catholic (Thomistic) the-ology. For personal reasons

    White entered Jungian analysis

    in Oxford during the SecondWorld War. He plunged into

    reading Jungs published works inboth English and German and was

    excited to discover key points of contact betweenJungs thought and the Thomistic theology that washis own creative field. His long-term, ambitiousgoal was to point the way toward a newThomistic synthesis between orthodox

    Catholic doctrine and the best of mod-ern science, which he had found,he believed, in Jungs psychology.

    White first wrote to Jung inAugust 1945, when the internationalmail service was working again after thewar, and enclosed four journal articles he hadwritten in the meantime about his proposed synthesis.In these essays White explored key writings by Jungand criticized the work of fellow theologians whohad tried, with mixed success, to discuss the psy-chologies of Freud and Jung from a theologicalstandpoint. Jung digested these offprints and then,with unwonted speed, welcomed White as the long-sought answer to a beleaguered scientists prayer.The rest of their story occupies the pages that follow.

    Since this is a story of interdisciplinary collabo-ration, readers on either side of the theology-psy-chology divide, not to mention those in different

    fields, may wonder what tempted representatives ofsuch different professions into the risky process oftheoretical bridge-building. The theology-psychologydialogue occupies no-mans-land, a territory minedwith risks of misunderstanding and threatened bypolitical crossfire. What historical factors propelledthis psychologist and this theologian to gambletheir personal resources and professional reputationsin the debate between faith and science?

    amused, but often he was angrily impatient withwhat he saw as the medieval frame of mind thatcould ignore facts, if necessary, to defend a truththat existed only in the abstract.

    Yet as he grew older Jung also experienced apowerful sense that he was called to treat the spiri-tual and religious ills of patients who, as he wrote,were suffering psychologically for lack of an authen-tic spiritual life. He began to reach out to theologians,

    especially to Catholics, whose ancient symbols andcreeds he found both alien and compelling. Fromhis father, a Swiss Reformed pastor, Jung felt hehad absorbed enough Protestantism to last a life-time. For the sake of his patients, however, and forhis collective patient, Western Christianity,4 hecame to a point where he had to ask for help, togain access to the symbolic language of Catholicism.

    When White wrote to him, Jung had long been

    yearning to carry on a truly psychological dialoguewith his Catholic consultants. So Whites apparentgrasp of and openness to empirical reasoning sur-prised and pleased him enormously. He could not

    have known, in advance of their debate, that Whitescommitment to experiential thought was not absolutebut was balanced by his enduring respect for revela-tion, tradition, and reason, the three authoritiesinvoked in classical Christian discourse. Whitesepistemology thus had four roots, whereas Jungs,arguably, had only one.

    The two men quickly acknowledged their dif-ferent educations and work environments, but they

    did not take time to test the depth of those differ-ences. They felt the pressure of Jungs advancingage, and they were also laboring under the impact ofall the revelations of evil and suffering in the warjust ended. For these and other reasons they rushedinto collaboration, believing they could build a solidbridge between their divergent modes of thought.White was particularly optimistic on this count. Heobserved that they used language and concepts dif-

    ferently but thought that with diligence their differ-ences could be resolved. Later, when the relation-ship was undergoing acute strains, he still pointedto their typological differences, as if hoping thatthey faced no irreconcilable contradiction, but weresimply viewing the same reality from two angles.

    Jung and White agreed at the outset about whatconstituted the inner experience and objective wel-fare of the human soul but disagreed about manyother things which would have been essential totheir shared task, such as the source and extent ofhuman knowledge about God, the definition andfoundation of faith, and the grounds for ultimatehopefulness about the destiny of creation. Thesedisagreements proved so vast that, even if all theother variables affecting their relationship had beenpositive, the conceptual divide would perhaps havebeen unbridgeable. Their falling out, which erupted

    in earnest afterJungs publica-tion ofAnswerto Job, only laidbare the fun-damental bar-riers to their

    collaboration. For all Whites distress about it,Jobdid not create these obstacles; they were present

    from the start.In his earliest letters White writes up to Jung,

    as if addressing a great master whose goodwill hedreads to lose. He emphasizes their points of con-vergence and avoids mentioning passages in Jungswritings with which he disagrees. One of these was

    Jungs broadside attack, in the published text of his1940 lecture on the Trinity, against the Catholicdoctrine treating evil as the privation of good.

    When White finally takes Jung to task for inferiortheology, in his fierce review of Jungs 1948 lectureabout the Self, he writes as if to a first-yearDominican, referring Jung to texts that will correcthis fundamental error. It is a crucial turning pointin the relationship. As the two men discover moreabout each other, their disagreements becometougher and more frustrating, until it becomes evi-dent that their opposing views of God, evil, and thehuman soul are based not only on conflicting theo-ries of knowledge but on their deepest personalcommitments, the nondebatable ground in whichtheir respective epistemologies are rooted.

    Jung and White were brought together byshared, passionate convictions concerning the spiri-tual healing of individuals and collectives. Each one,using his own language, related spiritual health topsychological wholeness, interpreting the latter asthe integration of opposites within the personality.

    White was enthusiastically willing to embraceJungian psychology, as far as he understood it, andsaw himself as a proto-analyst. In this respect theirrelationship was asymmetrical: Jung did not recipro-cate. His rejection of metaphysical arguments, despitehis own commitment to Kantian idealism,5 and hisresistance to collective authority especially whenthis authority spoke in a voice of religious ortho-doxy made it highly unlikely that he would ever

    enter Whites world, as White longed to enter his.

    Jung had grown up with the sinewy individual-ism of the Swiss Reformed tradition, which holdsthe souls relationship to God to be solitary anddirect, unmediated by any outer authority (althoughthe local pastors interpretation of the Bible, inZwinglis translation, might be taken into account).

    Jung never repudiated this tradition, of which hispastor father had been his most influential, ifambivalent, teacher. White, meanwhile, son of an

    Anglican priest, had converted to Catholicism in histeens6 and treasured the credal and metaphysicalthought-world which was his heritage. He held acomplex, sacramental view of the churchs commu-nal body, his inner world having been shaped by hisDominican education and by decades of service tohis community of faith. He could neither overcome

    Jungs resistance to credal and doctrinal statementsnor share it. His appropriation of Jungs psychology

    was based on his prior conviction that truth, likeGod, is unitary.7 He couldonly wring his hands at

    Jungs insistence thatunconsciousness and evilare intrinsic to the verynature of God.

    Historical contingen-cies also impinged heavilyon the relationship. Thecollaboration of Whiteand Jung unfolded duringa period in the twentieth century when manyCatholic theologians, not just White, felt theground of ecclesial politics shift beneath them.White depended on his Order, in which he hadlived since young adulthood; yet he also sufferedrepeatedly from wrenching vocational conflicts.With these internal struggles as a backdrop, he

    recognized the bitter irony of the blow dealtto him in the summer of 1954 when suddenlyand without explanation he was deprived of hisalready confirmed post as Regent of Studies atOxford Blackfriars.

    White had confided his renewed vocationaldoubts to Jung late in 1953 and early in 1954,when he came close to leaving the Order. With

    Jungs support and counsel he had concluded it was

    right to stay where he was, even though this would

    mean signing an anti-modernist oath, with whichhe emphatically disagreed, as the price of his newposition. White had just made his peace with thisdecision when he experienced his public humiliation.This series of events should be kept in mind, Ibelieve, when considering the rupture of the Jung-White friendship in mid-1955. This was the time,as it happens, when C.G. and Emma Jung were fac-ing the terminal cancer diagnosis which had just

    been delivered to her. Jungs capacity to deal kindlywith a troubled and troubling friend was doubtlessless than it might have been. For whatever reason,his need to separate himself from White at thispoint was apparently so absolute that, had it notbeen for the mediation that came later from anextraordinary direction, during Whites final illness,their story would have ended, like the Freud-Jungstory, in silence.

    etween 1933 and 1941,C.G. Jung lectured at theSwiss Federal Institutefor Technology (ETH).

    He was appointed aprofessor there in 1935.

    This represented aresumption of hisuniversity career after

    a long hiatus, as hehad resigned his post

    as a lecturer in the medicalfaculty at the University of Zrich in 1914. In theintervening period, Jungs teaching activity hadprincipally consisted of a series of seminars at thePsychological Club in Zrich, which were restrictedto a membership consisting of his own students.The lectures at the ETH were open, and the audi-

    ence for the lectures was made up of students at theETH, the general public and Jungs followers. Theattendance at each lecture was in the hundreds. KurtBinswanger, who attended the lectures, recalled thatpeople often couldnt find a seat, and that the auditorswere of all ages and of allsocial classes: students, peo-ple who hadnt and werenot trained, but who wereinterested; middle-agedpeople; also many olderpeople; many ladies whowere once in analysis with

    Jung.1 As a consequenceof the context, the lan-guage of the lectures is farmore accessible than Jungspublished works at this time. Binswanger also notedthat Jung prepared each of those lectures extremely

    carefully. After the lectures a part of the audiencealways remained to ask questions, in a totally natu-ral and relaxed situation. It was also pleasant that

    Jung never appeared at the last minute, as so manyother lecturers did. He, on the contrary, was alreadypresent before the lecture, sat on one of the benchesin the corridor; and people could go and sit withhim. He was communicative and open.2

    These lectures are Jungs most important series

    of lectures and the primary source for the under-

    standing of his late work. The topics of the lecturesinclude a seminal study of the history of psychology,an account of the theory and practice of complexpsychology with particular reference to the theory ofcomplexes, dream analysis, psychological types, andthe psychology of the unconscious, Jungs mostextended case study, studies of the spiritual exercisesof Ignatius of Loyola, the Yoga sutras of Patanjali,and the symbolism of Buddhist meditational prac-

    tices and medieval alchemy. In studying these tradi-tions, Jung presented a comparative study of theindividuation process in various cultures in anattempt to construct a psychology which wouldhave cross-cultural validity. In considering the historyof psychology and the status of modern psychology,

    Jung included the psychological component ofWestern philosophy, religion, hermeticism andEastern thought.

    These lectures are at the centre of Jungs intel-lectual activity in the 1930s, and furthermore, pro-vide the basis of his work in the 1940s and 1950s.Thus these lectures form a critical part of Jungsoeuvre, and one which has yet to be accorded the

    attention and study whichit deserves. The subjectsthat Jung addressed in theETH lectures are moresignificant to present dayscholars, psychologists,psychotherapists and thegeneral public than theywere when they were firstdelivered. The passingyears have seen a mush-rooming of interest in

    Eastern thought, Western hermeticism and mysticaltraditions, the rise of the psychological types indus-

    try and the dream work movement, and the emer-gence of a discipline of the history of psychology.

    THE PROJECTTo date, the contents of these lectures have onlybeen known through a limited circulation of aprivately published set of mimeographed notes inEnglish, edited by Barbara Hannah, which wereprepared contemporaneously with the lectures.

Hannah stated that her notes makeno attempt at being a verbatim report or literaltranslation, but were simply intended as an outline.Whilst generally reliable, Hannahs account leavesout much of the actual content and wording of thelectures and is far from complete. For the semestersfrom 1933-1935, Hannah based herself on short-hand notes taken by Marie-Jeanne Schmid andEnglish notes taken by Elisabeth Welsh, Una Thomasand herself. Hannahs edition does not cover thelectures between 1936 and the early half of 1938

    and so are quite incomplete. For the lectures betweenthe second half of 1938 and 1941, Hannah basedher notes on the shorthand notes of Riwkah Schrf.

    In the 1990s, several sets of previouslyunknown original shorthand notes by differentauditors were recovered and transcribed, togetherwith a further set of German typescript notes. Inaddition, there exist some manuscript notes by Jungwhich he used to prepare his lectures. Taken together,

    these notes finally enable the original lectures to be

    accurately reconstructed for the first time. Theshorthand notes of Eduard Sidler and the originalnotes of Riwkah Schrf were transcribed by theETH archives. As these notes were in a form ofGerman shorthand which is no longer in use today,some secretaries were brought out of retirement todecipher and transcribe them. The notes of LucieStutz-Meyer and Otto Karthaus are in the form ofa modern German typescript. There is a differentlevel of documentation for various semesters. In2004, the Philemon Foundation undertook to

    sponsor the preparation of these lectures for publi-cation by Dr. Angela Graf-Nold, in collaborationwith the heirs of C. G. Jung, the ETH archives, andthe Institute for the History of Medicine at theUniversity of Zrich.

    CONTENT OF THE LECTURESAngela Graf-Nold has commenced preparing thefirst two of the thirteen semesters for publication.The first semesters consist of Jungs lectures on thehistory of psychology and on modern psychology.

    The first semester, from 20 October 1933 to23 February 1934, consists of sixteen lectures onthe history of psychology. Of the major figures intwentieth century psychology, Jung was arguably

    the most historically minded. The significance heaccorded to the history of the discipline of psychol-ogy itself in these lectures attests to this. Hisaccount of the history of psychology commenceswith philosophical developments in the eighteenthcentury and presents a comparative study of move-ments in French, German, and British thought. Heplaced particular emphasis on the development ofconceptions of the unconscious in nineteenth century

    German Idealism. Turning to England and France,Jung traced the emergence of the empirical traditionand psychophysical research, and how these in turnbecame taken up in Germany and led to the emer-gence of experimental psychology. He reconstructedthe rise of scientific psychology in France and theUnited States. He then turned to the significance

    of spiritualism and psychical research in the rise ofpsychology, playing particular attention to the workof Justinus Kerner and Thodore Flournoy. Jungdevoted five lectures to a detailed study of Kerners

    work, The Seeress of Prevost(1829), and two lectures toa detailed study of Flournoys From India to the PlanetMars(1899).3 These works initially had a consider-able impact on Jung. As well as elucidating their his-torical significance, his consideration of them enablesone to understand the role that his reading of themplayed in his early work. Unusually, in this section,

    Jung eschewed a conventional history of ideasapproach, and placed special emphasis on the role

    of patients and subjects in the constitution of psy-

    chology. In the course of his reading of these works,Jung developed a detailed taxonomy of the scope ofhuman consciousness, which he presented in a seriesof diagrams. He then presented a further series ofillustrative case studies of historical individuals interms of this model: Niklaus von der Fle, Goethe,Nietzsche, Freud, John D. Rockefeller and the so-called normal man.

    These lectures thus have a twofold significance:

    on the one hand, they present a seminal contribu-tion to the history of psychology, and hence to thecurrent historiography of psychology. On the otherhand, it is clear that the developments which Jungreconstructed teleologically culminate in his owncomplex psychology (his preferred designation forhis work), and thus present his own understandingof its emergence. This account provides a criticalcorrection to the prevailing Freudocentric accounts

    of the development of Jungs work, which werealready in circulation at this time. The detailed tax-onomy of consciousness which he presented in thesecond part of this semester was not documented inany of his published works. In presenting it, Jungnoted that the difficulties which he had encounteredwith his project for a psychological typology had

    led him to undertake this. Thusthese lectures present criticalaspects of Jungs maturethought which are unavailableelsewhere.

    On the basis of his recon-struction of the history ofpsychology, Jung then devoted

    the following semesters to an account of complexpsychology. As Jung was confronted with a generalaudience, the context of the lectures presented himwith a unique opportunity to present a full and gen-

    erally accessible account of his work, as he couldnot presuppose prior knowledge of psychology. Thusthese semesters present the most detailed introduc-tion to Jungs complex psychology. However, thisis by no means just an introduction to previouswork, but presents a full scale reworking of his earlywork in terms of his current understanding, andpresents models of the personality which are notpresent anywhere else in his work.     his theory of complexes, associations experiments,understanding of dreams, the structure of the per-

    sonality and the nature of psychology.The second semester consists of twelve lecturesfrom 20 April 1934 to 13 July 1934. Jung com-menced with lectures on the problematic status ofpsychology, and attempted to give an account as tohow the various views of psychology in its historywhich had he had presented in the first semester hadbeen generated. This led him to account for nation-al differences in ideas and outlook, and to reflect ondifferent characteristics and difficulties of theEnglish, French, German languages when it came toexpressing psychological materials. Reflecting on thesignificance of linguistic ambiguity led Jung togive an account of the status of the concept of theunconscious, which he illustrated with several cases.Following these general reflections, Jung presentedhis conception of the psychological functionsand types, illustrated by practical examples of theirinteraction. He then gave an account of his concept

    of the collective unconscious. Filling a lacuna in hisearlier accounts, he gave a detailed map of thedifferentiation and stratification of its contents, inparticular, as regards cultural and racial differences.He then turned to describing methods for renderingaccessible the contents of the unconscious: the asso-ciations experiment, the psycho-galvanic method,and dream analysis. In his account of these meth-ods, Jung revised his previous work in the light of

    his present understanding. In particular, he gave a

    detailed account ofhow the study ofassociations in fami-lies enabled the psy-chology of familiesand the functioningof complexes to bestudied. This semesterconcluded with an

    overview of the topicof dreams and thedetailed study of sev-eral dreams.

    Thus with theirreconstruction andpublication, these lec-

    tures will take their rightful place at the centre ofJungs work in the 1930s and further the compre-

    hension of his work and the formation of modernpsychology.

    Federal

    Institute ofTechnology

    (ETH), Zrich. Theofficial lecture list announced Jungs course ModernPsychology as part of the general division, that is,as a possible choice for all regular scholars at theETH who had to complete their curricula with somesubjects of their choice from the general course ofstudies in the human sciences (Geistes-, Sozial- und

    Staatswissenschaften). These courses were traditionallyopen to the general public, who could register asguest auditors. Jung was appointed as professor at theETH in 1935 and lectured there until the summerof 1941.

    The special academic conditions of the ETHas well as the date of Jungs beginning of lecturingat the end of 1933 were quite critical. Thirtyyears previously he had been appointed as lecturer(Privatdozent) of the Medical Faculty of the Universityof Zrich; as lecturer in psychiatry he presented onhysteria and Freuds theories for medical students andalso gave an open seminar for a general audience eachsemester. Twenty years earlier, in 1913, after hisfriendship and collaboration with Freud broke down,

    Jung withdrew from the psychoanalytic organizationwhich he had basically founded and directed aspresident and submitted his resignation from his aca-demic appointment in order to concentrate more

    on his private practice.The circumstances of Jungs request to take up

    his academic career 20 years later in 1933 are not yetfully researched. Since 1909, when he resigned fromhis position as resident doctor under Eugen Bleuler atthe Brgholzli, the mental hospital of the Universityof Zrich, he had worked on his private practice inKsnacht near Zrich as a psychiatrist who focusedhis independent studies in the field of what Bleuler

    termed depth psychology. His growing reputation

    was mainly advanced by influential American patients,such as Edith McCormick Rockefeller, who spon-sored the founding of the Psychological Clubin Zrich where patients could meet and stay. Aftersome initial difficulties, this institution developedinto a forum for patients, followers, colleagues, andguests from related disciplines to present and discusstheir own investigations and experiences in the fieldsof psychology and psychotherapy.

    Without doubt, by 1933 Jungs main conceptswere developed: typology, archetypal structures ofthe psyche, and the process of individuation.Obviously Jung felt the urge to put these conceptsin their specific places within the common historyof psychology and to popularize his findings within

    the scientific community.The first four lectures

    in 1933 Jung dedicated to the

    issue of the history of psy-chology. His drafts largesheets of paper with topicwords, notes, and excerpts are witness to his own deepinvestigations in the field ofthe history of psychology aswell as to his preoccupationwith the approaches conveyedby his academic colleagues,such as Max Dessoir.

    Strikingly, he drew his own specific picture of thefield, an approach which relied on ideas that hadbeen developed, forgotten for a long time and thenrediscovered (palingenesis). In addition, he followedthe specific traditions of psychological ideas in sev-eral languages, such as the lines of French, German,and English traditions of psychological thinking.

    The special attention that Jung paid to the

    lectures is indicated by the fact that he ordered ashorthand typescript of the lectures from his per-sonal secretary; at the same time, several personsfrom the audience had made shorthand notes, someof which were later transcribed. These engagedaudience members obviously were not regular ETHscholars, but rather from the membership of thePsychological Club and the interested general public.

    piled an English version of Jungs lectures. Startingin 1938, these typescripts were circulated as anunauthorized version, and were edited in improvedprivate imprints until 1968. As a translation, theseeditions never had the ambition of adhering to averbatim protocol, but rather were intended to bea comprehensive account of the contents.

    For the first semester, Barbara Hannah reliedon the shorthand-based typescript of Jungs secre-

    tary, Marie-Jeanne Schmid. In the later lectures sherelied on the shorthand notes of Riwkah Schrf, ayoung Jewish woman, who at that time worked asa secretary for a firm of Christian devotional arti-cles. Later on Ms. Schrf studied religions andancient languages at the University of Zrich andparticipated especially in Jungs studies in religion.

    The most constant and verbally exact notes ofthese lectures came from Eduard Sidler, a middle

    aged mechanical engineer, who obviously played norole in the Jungian circle and attended the lecturesas an interested guest. Another psychologicallyinterested person who took shorthand notes was theyoung Otto Karthaus. He later became one of thefirst scientific vocational counselors in private prac-tice in German speaking Switzerland. From him wehave typescripts of the later lectures. Additionally,isolated transcriptions of single lectures have beenfound, for example from Lucie Stutz-Meyer, thegymnastic teacher of the Jung family.

    Altogether we have the material for the compi-lation of a version of Jungs lectures in Germanwhich essentially surpasses Barbara Hannahs ver-sion and gives a much more vivid and concrete pic-ture of the content of Jungs lectures as well as the

    specific atmosphere around him. Quite differentfrom mechanical recording, the notations of severalpersons convey Jungs speaking in slightly differentversions, relating their different impressions andjudgments so that a collage of all the texts togetherwith Jungs drafts transmit a vivid picture of Jungsintention and the immediate comprehension of hislectures by the audience.

    For example, the text of Jungs first lecture

    recorded by his secretary Marie-Jeanne Schmidbegins with the usual statement: Actual psychologyfirst begins with the beginning of the enlightenment,that is the end of the 17th century.1 Barbara Hannahput two important sentences before Schmidtstext: Psychology is a vast subject, one could saythat there were as many psychologies as heads inthe world. Alchemy and astrology were early uncon-scious forms of psychology.2 Eduard Sidler addi-

    tionally adds Jungs introduction which covers twopages of text and includes Jungs remarks about hisformer time as lecturer at the University of Zrich20 years ago. I had lectured for eight years naturallywith alternating luck. Then I discovered that onehad to understand something before one is able to

    A transcription of Jungs lecture drafts will beadded to the critical edition as an appendix in orderfor todays reader to witness Jungs interaction withhis academic colleagues and his efforts to integratehis findings in the history of ideas and the body of

    academic psychology.As we know, Jungs efforts in this direction

    were less than a full success; until today Jungs placein academic psychology is critical. Hopefully ascholarly edition of the lectures will provide historicalbackground and promote a more adequate receptionand integration of Jungs contribution to modernpsychology.

    BiographyDr. Angela Graf-Nold is a psychotherapist in practice in Zrich and aResearcher at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the University ofZrich. She works on the history of psychology, psychotherapy and psycho-analysis, especially in Switzerland. She has published on the early history ofchild psychoanalysis (Der Fall Hermine HugHellmuth, Verlag InternationalePsychoanalyse, 1988), Sabina Spielrein, and other early controversies and

    debates of Freud and the Freudians with pioneering academic psychologistsand psychiatrists (William Stern, August Forel, Eugen Bleuler, C. G. Jung).

    lecture about it.3 Then Sidler relates that Jungretired and traveled around the world, for withinour sphere of culture, the Archimedian point is miss-ing.4Jung is referring to his experience of the past20 years and his attempt to lecture about the disci-pline of so-called psychology, which would be a verycomplicated task.

    Next follows this sequence as cited by Hannah:It would be possible to write as many psychologies

    as there are heads.5Jung further explains that differ-ent psychologies would be built on special questions,for example on biological psychology, individualpsychology and so forth. He admits his difficulty inaddressing a special audience of the younger genera-tion and therefore begs them to ask questions:But only in the frame of the lecture. Not about thefuture of the European economy or the prospectsof National Socialism.6 Then he goes on to a more

    general definition of his subject Modern Psychology.He chose a common title because the things hewould treat would be of common nature; he wouldnot engage in specific scientific positions but rathermake a picture that stems from immediate experi-ence and thus show the development of modernpsychological ideas.7

    Jung stated that psychology would be a modernscience. In earlier times there was no real psycho-logy. And now comes the sentence his secretarynoted, that is real psychology begins with the begin-ning of the enlightenment at the end of the 17thcentury. This follows the statement Hannah put inadvance of it: There was always psychology, psy-chological demonstrations. The ancient times hadastrology, partly alchemy, that was a most remark-able so-called projected psychology.8 And Jungcontinues: To you I now will speak about psychol-ogy as a concise science. Until Descartes ...9 In

    Jungs lecture drafts these statements are not written;he only wrote: in earlier times there was no psy-chology, which begins with the beginning of theenlightenment. Until Descartes ...10

    Another page of Jungs lecture drafts entitledIntroduction has a line crossed out: modern psy-chology is empirical, in earlier times it was speculativeor rational psychology.11 He noted the book heused obviously for reference: Max Dessoir, The

    History of Modern German Psychology (Geschichte derneueren Deutschen Psychologie).12

    ung, Catalogue chronologique descrits(The Chronological

    Catalogue of Jungs Writings)was born of the necessity to finda correspondence between theoriginal work and its varioustranslations as simply as possible.

    The Gesammelte Werkewereused as the single reference, even

    though certain texts had originallybeen written in English or French.

    The decision to rely on the GesammelteWerkeensures the coherence of the Catalogue

    and also makes it a valuable tool for researchersfrom all over the world.

    Initially, the workconsisted in drawingup as exhaustive a list

    as possible of all thatJung had written. Forthis task, Volume XIXof the Collected Workswas a precious sourceof information, espe-cially because each titleentry is annotated withthe dates of the laterversions and revisionsin which Jung oftenengaged. The chrono-logical indications canbe read as evidence ofthe dynamic of thecreative process atwork in Jungs mind.

    To chart the concordance between the originaltexts and their translations into English and French,

    a four-column table was drawn up. The first col-umn contains the date of the first version, followedby the dates of subsequent revisions (if applicable).The second column contains the German title ofthe text in question, followed by its references inthe Gesammelte Werke(volume and paragraphs); thetranslators name is noted when the original wasnot written in German. The third column containsEnglish titles; the event which led to the publication

    of the text may also be indicated, be it a lecture, an

    article for a periodical, a radio broadcast, etc. Thefourth column indicates the French title, the trans-lators name, the title of the book from which thearticle is drawn, publication date and correspondingpages. (Any further explanation can be found in thechapter Methodology.)

    This fundamental work is what comprised thefirst edition of the Catalogue chronologique des crits deCarl Gustav Jung, en allemand, anglais et franais, published

    in 1996 by the Cahiers jungiens de psychanalyse inthe form of a 134-page special issue of the quarterly.

    This bibliography immediately proved its worthas an essential tool for researchers, translators, oreven readers seeking to deepen their knowledge of

    Jungs works. However, a second printing soon

    became inevitable. The IAAP convention held inBarcelona in August, 2004 was the event whichprovided the occasion for it. It was thus that a 320-

    page book entitledJung, Catalogue chronologique des critswas published by the Cahiers jungiens de psychanalyse,the non-profit organization which publishes thewritings of contemporary Jungian analysts in France.

    In addition to the bibliographies in German,English, and French, the preceding edition of theCataloguecontained an index of all the French titleswhich had been catalogued, followed by a referenceto the page number in the Catalogue. This device

    made the material much easier for the researcher to

    identify, but it was sorely missing for the Germanand English titles. Our task was clear, and this workmade up the first phase of the new version.

    It then became evident that the Italian readerwas entitled to the same research tool. However, C. G.Jung Operedoes not map exactly the same territoryas the Gesammelte Werke. Moreover, it does notnote paragraph numbers. On the other hand, eacharticle is preceded by an accurate list of sources.

    Painstaking work was thus necessary, to cross-refer-ence the publication, not only to the title a givenarticle bears in Gesammelte Werke, but also betweenthe page numbers of the Italian publication and theparagraphs of the German one. Of course, the Italianpublications were also indexed in the Catalogue, aspart of its purpose as a singlesource of bibliographical infor-mation.

    In parallel, I had written tovarious colleagues in the Jungiancommunity with a request thatthey inform me of any works by

    Jung, regardless of their size,which had been translated intotheir own languages. I mustthank them for their efficientcooperation, which enabled meto collect the information neces-sary to expand the Cataloguetoinclude a certain number ofother languages. Thus, workstranslated into Spanish,Portuguese, Romanian, Russian,Polish, Swedish, Hebrew, Chinese,and Japanese are now an integral part of theCatalogue. Whenever possible, titles were transcribedin the original language. The specificities relative to

    each publication were noted at the beginning ofeach chapter. For example, the annotation to theRussian translations indicates that the source textmay have been either the one in the Collected Works,the one in the Gesammelte Werke, or sometimes evenboth in a single volume. The structure of thePortuguese edition replicates that of the GesammelteWerke, although it is true that certain volumes weresubdivided. The reader will note that Spanish and

    Polish translations of certain volumes of the

    Gesammelte Werkeare now being published. The inven-tory of this activity is supplemented by the list andcontents of additional publications in book form.

    Regardless of the language and the specificitiesof the organization of each of the works cited, theyare invariably cross-referenced to the Gesammelte Werkeas well as to a specific page or pages in the Catalogue.

    The corpus of the Catalogue chronologique des critsconsists of the four-column table described above.

    This table is the single bibliographical referencetool to which all the works cited elsewhere in thevolume correspond. The integrality of the Catalogueis a statement of its originality, as well as its univer-sality as a research tool, insofar as it also makes itpossible to read the various publications synoptically.

    Prior to the table, the Cataloguecontains a fewprefaces translated into English commentingon the importance of Jungs work and its resonance

    with various cultures. An excerpt from a letterFederico Fellini wrote to Georges Simenon follow-ing his visit to the Bollingen Tower is included toattest to the interest certain artists have taken in

    Jungs work.Moreover, a bibliography for each of the lan-

    guages cited has been drawn up as exhaustively aspossible. Paperback editions were not left out, asthey are proof of the growing interest of the general

    public in Jungian thought. Doubtless other transla-

    tions exist, in other languages, but, due to thedifficulty of obtaining accurate information, it wasnot possible to include mention of them.

    Where will the Cataloguego from here? Certainly,within the next several years, it will have to beupdated. A growth in the number of translationsand the thriving interest in Jungs work will makethis essential. It is uncertain whether an updatededition will clearly be annotated with the various

    revisions to which Jung subjected his work. Therevisions either vanish or are difficult to detect inthe Gesammelte Werkeand Collected Works, due to theireditors decision to indicate only the final version.As a result, todays reader has been deprived ofa valuable heritage, along with the fascinatingevidence of the authors creative process.

    Fortunately, the Philemon Foundation hasplans to publish each text with indications of how

    it evolved, annotated with the passages which werecrossed out, corrected, deleted, or expanded byJungs hand, over the years of his lifetime.

    The birthplaces ofartistic masterpieces,classics of philoso-phy and other cul-

    tural treasures have always exerteda fascination that inspires peopleto make educational pilgrimagesand side trips. Once weve reador seen something that comes

    alive for us, we may well want tosee the place of its origin for

    ourselves. However, suchexpectations are only too often disappointed. Afterall, we can go to see thefaade of the house inPrague where Kafka wroteThe Metamorphosis, butwill this experience add to

    our understanding of thestory? Will we understandthe philosophies of Hegel orSchopenhauer better if weveseen the desks at which they were formulated? Oneof the characters in a book by Thomas Bernhardwarns, Stay as far as possible from the places whereour cultural icons were born, resided or died.1

    On the other hand, the cultural icon Goethehimself advised: If you hope to understand a poet,go to his country. Could it be that our understand-ing of the works that inspire us is enhanced whenwe see the places where they were conceived,because our visual sense anchors these works evenmore deeply in our memories?

    Something like this impulse must have inspiredthe photo expedition made by Dieter Klein andHenning Weyerstra from Cologne. Weyerstra, acomputer specialist, was fascinated by the works of

    Jung and determined to make Jungs writings avail-able to all on CD. The project involved years ofpreliminary work in order to electronically scan thecollected works and correct the results, as well asmany trips to Zrich to secure authorization for theproject from C. G. Jungs community of heirs. Hisfriend Dieter Klein, a photographer, got to hear agreat deal about this project over the years andeventually was caught up in the enthusiasm. The

    two of them formed a plan to travel together to

    Switzerland and make a photographic record of theplaces where Jung developed analytical psychology:

    Jungs residence on Seestrae in Ksnacht, the towerin Bollingen on the north shore of Lake Zrich,the house on Gemeindestrae in Zrich where theoriginal C. G. Jung Institute had its headquartersand where the Psychology Club is still locatedtoday, the present headquarters of the Institute inKsnacht, and many more. Of course we havedepictions of these places in old black-and-whitephotos. But what do they look like today?

    Klein, a prize-winning art photographer, wasmotivated to make this trip by something morethan the interests of a journalist or a tourist. Forquite some time now, he has been specializing in a

    particular kind of photographic still life, whichfocuses on points of visual correspondence betweencertain predetermined motifs and intuitively selectedfound objects and places. In other words, hisapproach to his projects is that of an artist ratherthan a museum curator. His term for the photo-graphic subjects his selective eye discovers is theflotsam and jetsam of history. The key to this

    approach is his interest in the juxtaposition of thetangible and the symbolic, the connections betweentexts, images and places, and the superimpositionof the past and the present.

    That was the beginning of this treasure huntwith its uncertain outcome. Most of the buildingsand interior spaces that were of interest for theproject are not open to the public, and some ofthem are still being privately used by C. G. Jungsheirs so initially there was no guarantee that theplan would work. Keeping up their spirits withphrases such as Weve got no expectations at alland Anything can happen, the two collaboratorsset out for Switzerland. They ended up makingthree trips to Zrich between May 2003 and March

    2004 in order to talk to Jungs relatives in differentlocations always with a digital camera at the ready.

    The result of their efforts is a series of photo-graphs of houses, interiors, books and details ofthe local landscape. One special feature of the seriesis the photos within photos arranged by Klein,in which a color photograph of a certain spaceincludes a black-and-white photo of the same spacedisplayed on an easel. These black-and-white pic-

    tures, which have often been taken from a similarcamera location, document how that particular placelooked 50 years ago or even further back in time.The amazing thing about some of these photographsis that at first glance hardly anything has changed;for example, Jungs desk and his living room havebeen kept largely untouched and looks almost theway they did when he was still alive. Whereas theaesthetically pleasing color photograph of the sitespresent condition suggests timelessness, the oldphotograph within the new one reminds us of thepassage of time, especially if it depicts people whoare no longer alive. The theme is Jung today but as we look at these photographs we becomeaware of the historical distance between these pairedviews of the same motifs. The same effect can befound in the still-life snapshot of the table in theinner courtyard of the tower in Bollingen, wheresomeone has just finished drinking a cup of tea.

    The sugar, the bread and the cup are objects of the

    present day, yet in their simple forms they and thetable itself point to something that is archetypal.

    The color photographs have been published inthe illustrated book In Search of C. G. Jung, edited byDieter Klein and Henning Weyerstra, togetherwith articles by present-day authors; they are alsoavailable in the form of a calendar for the year 2005(2006 in preparation).     THE INAUGURAL PHILEMON LECTURESIn March 2005, Sonu Shamdasani and EugeneTaylor began a series of annual lectures at theC. G. Jung Educational Center in Houston, on thepast, present and future of Jungs intellectual legacy.Sonu Shamdasani presented a talk entitled, TheUndiscovered Jung. Nearly half a century after hisdeath much of Jungs work still remains undiscov-ered, as thousands of pages of manuscripts,

    seminars and correspondence remain unpublished.This presentation described the curious circum-stances as to how this situation came about, andreflected on how the publication of the rest of thisvast corpus might transform contemporary under-standings of his life and work.

    Eugene Taylor presented a talk entitled, And Partsof Jung: The Appropriation of Jungs Ideas within

    the American Psychotherapeutic Counter-Culture.Abraham Maslow and Anthony Sutich, editorsofThe Journal of Humanistic Psychology, declared thelaunching of a new era in psychology in 1961. Thisnew psychology would emphasize self-actualization,interpersonal knowing, transcendence, the studyof the whole being. It would draw on varied sourcesin Eastern and Western traditions and wouldappropriate parts of Jung. Since then, Jung often represented only as an acolyte of Freud andlargely ignored in mainstream academic psychology

    has been enthusiastically embraced by thepsychotherapeutic counter-culture. What thisappropriation was all about, and its consequencesfor practice and credentialing analysts in Jungianpsychology today and in future was examined.

    This was followed by a panel discussion with JamesHollis, Stephen A. Martin, Sonu Shamdasani and

    Eugene Taylor.
