P2P Finalists

Seven Echoes Homestead, founded June 2012, provides a creative forum to further cultural enrichment, address the core issues of sustainability, and bring renewed economic vitality to the Chilkat Valley by means of strategic consultancy. Carol Tuynman started Seven Echoes Homestead with the goal of building an accessible, Internet-connected resource and retreat center in the wilderness of Southeast Alaska. The center will offer workshops, work study programs, conferences, and independent projects that can be replicated to meet the needs of the broader community.

Nathan Soboleff resides in Juneau where he is trying an unconventional start up business; growing plants in an indoor controlled environment facility on an industrial scale with year round production. His Juneau business has two aspects to it: 1) Selling fresh produce to local stores, restaurants, and consumers and 2) Growing hops to market to breweries. If the Juneau model functions as planned, Nathan’s vision is to expand his business to other communities around the State.

As a representative of Chilkoot Indian Enterprises, Scott Hansen is working on a business plan for P2P that involves using locally derived wood sources to produce premium quality wood pellets. This business aims to address the need for a less expensive, locally-derived heating fuel that can be used by all sectors of the local population. The pellets can be used by residential and business heating systems that are designed to use wood pellets for fuel.

Marc Wheeler has been dedicated to the community of Juneau since he arrived as an Americorps volunteer in 1995. Marc started Coppa in the summer of 2013 with his wife Jessica Paris, to make people happy through artisanal ice cream, coffee, and homemade baked goods. In the next phase of his business planning, Marc will expand into wholesale ice cream production, focusing on rhubarb sherbet and other ice cream flavors using local ingredients.

The Sawmill Farm is a new business headed by Bobbie Daniels and Justin Albee of Sitka, Alaska. The mission of Sawmill Farm is to produce locally grown, hormone and antibiotic free meat for the residents of Sitka. Using food currently being thrown away and barged out of state to a landfill, the Sawmill Farm will raise pigs, rabbits, and poultry as a source of locally produced meat for Sitkans.

Raven Guitars is Path to Prosperity’s hybrid entry. When P2P announced this year’s top 12 business concepts, it was to everybody’s shock that two of them were guitar-building ideas. Steve Helgeson and Kevin Skeek met for the first time at the P2P Boot Camp. Skeek and Helgeson were so inspired by each other’s energy and vision that they decided to combine their efforts on the final business plan submission for the competition, under the name of Raven Guitars.

Shaan-Seet Inc. is a village native corporation that was established in 1971 under the Alaska Native Claimes Settlement Act. The village corporation has developed a business plan for Shaan-Seet Biomass Distributors which will provide affordable wood pellets for commercial and residential space heating on remote Prince of Wales Island.

Tamsen Cassidy is a small farm holder in Haines. Her new business Klehini Feed and Seed is a destination point; a unique gathering place where local farmers, gardeners and travelers alike will collaborate together to learn and to entertain. Our goal is to provide quality customer service and choice in the delivery and accessibility of natural and organic feeds, grains and farm supplies, while showcasing our community’s local products and arts.

In partnership with their existing business Icy Straits Lumber & Milling Co. (ISL), Wes and Sue Tyler have created Alaska Legacy Wood Homes & Products. This new retail business will provide locally manufactured wood products and furniture that are sourced from ISL as well as other local wood product producers. Given their experience and feasibility study, Wes and Sue aim to supply the growing demand for locally milled products.

Debra Schnabel is from Haines. While furnishing her home over the course of four years, Debra was drawn to cabinet knobs made of rock she found on an internet marketplace. She soon realized that the glacial ground stones of the Tsirku River and were more beautiful than the ones she had purchased for $28. Glacial Ground Rocknobs was born, and over the course

Southeast Alaska Produce, LLC (SEAP) is a new business that is still in the planning phase. Currently Chelsea Schoonover, owner/organizer, is collaborating with strategic partners and building a team that can bring the vision for SEAP to reality. The vision of SEAP is to become a major supplier of fresh produce for the town of Hoonah and Southeast Alaska. SEAP’s model will use renewable energy and sustainable local resources to grow local produce on a commercial scale.
