Bites of Bread from Bob In the continuation of a series on quotes that many have assumed in the Bible, this issue addresses “God helps those who help themselves.” This quotation is meant to be an inspiration towards self-help. Today, bookstores (for those who still actually go to a book-store) have shelves full of so-called self-help books. Self-help books are sort of an oxymoron. If it were truly self-help, you wouldn’t need to buy a book written by someone else to help you with your issue.
Wikipedia tells us that the phrase “God helps those who help themselves” originated in ancient Greece as the moral to one of Aesop’s Fables, “Hercules and the Waggoner.” It has often been mistak-enly attributed to the Bible or to Benjamin Franklin. In fact, George Barna researchers have found that about 75% of people feel it is in the Bible. It even tops the list as one of the best known verses of the Bible. While the quote is not a part of the Bible, some have thought a few of the parables of Jesus, like the parable of the ten virgins, support the idea. That parable teaches the importance of doing our part to be ready for the coming of Jesus.
The greatest problem with this quotation is that it seems to fly in the face of grace. Grace is the unmer-ited favor of God. We do not have to do something in order to earn it. Romans 5 reads “While we were powerless...while we were yet sinners...while we were God’s enemies, Christ died for us.” We do not need to get our act in order before God will love us. The old saying is that God loves us just as we are but loves us so much that God does not want us to stay as we are. Some churches make people feel as if they have to have their act together before they can be a part of the church. According to scripture, if you
don’t have your act together, the church is exactly the place where you should be. That is the way it is at Salem
First Christian Church. In fact, if you don’t have your act all together, you will fit in just great with the rest of us. The quote ought to be, “God helps those who can’t help themselves.”
God Bless, Pastor Bob

June 9– Pastor Bob Hanna Numbers 21:4 - 9 & John 3:14 & 15 “The Neglected Verses” Immediately before one of the most well known verses of the Bible are two unknown and neglected verses. What do those verses have to do with faith? June 16– Pastor Bob Deuteronomy 6:4 - 9, “Integrity” The word shares the same root as the word “integer” a whole number, something that is complete in itself. How do we live lives that are whole and complete?
"Love Award" What a privilege it was Sunday to present the 2013 Love Award to CLAIRE WIDENER. This award is given by the Christian Women's Fellowship of this church to recognize and honor an outstanding woman in our congregation for her service and leadership ~ not only to Christian Women's Fellowship, but to many areas of our congregation as a whole. Thank You A heartfelt “Thank You” to Margi Wolski for taking me to the doctor while my mother was recovering. It was wonderful getting to know you. Many blessings to you, Margi, with my thanks.
Marlene Ivey An update on Jaime VanCamp! Thank you for your concerns and financial help for my niece and her family. She found an apartment in Oklahoma City, close to her work… She is on the management team of Cracker Barrel. Although there is now a roof over her head, they do not have anything to move into the apartment. Your help is greatly appreciated. On May 26 she went out for the last look through of her “stuff” and moved a ceiling tile. Under the tile was a cage for her 4 ½ year old daughter’s guinea pig BUT no guinea pig. Jaime said she sat there an wept. Then there was a rustling noise. Buried in the debris was the little guinea pig. Blessings come in unbeliev-able places. (I renamed the gp “HOPE.” We always have hope for our future, for we know who we have our HOPE in.) Thank you for your prayers, concerns and cards as I travel the new adventure after oral surgery. I am assured I will be able to “chew” once more…and in time for the upcoming Holy Land trip.

Children and YouthChildren and YouthChildren and YouthChildren and Youth A Little Light from Laurie When I started here almost six years ago, CJ was just starting freshman year in high school; Joe was start-ing fifth grade and Daniel, kindergarten. At the time, my oldest group was the fifth graders, who are now finishing up their sophomore year in high school. Af-ter watching Youth Sunday yesterday, I am excited to say how proud I am of the fine group of leaders this church is raising, and you should be too.
Due to our family involvement here, our boys have had the opportunity to interact with many of their church family members face to face. They have also had the privilege to follow in your footsteps as lead-ers, as active members of the church, community and region. They have watched you work, teach and care for others and they have been blessed with many ex-periences that you, their church family, have pro-vided. They are building strong, godly foundations because you are there to help give them the tools with which to build.
Church life and family dynamics are changing and not all families have these opportunities. Families are stretched more today than ever before. It’s even more important now to reach out and support our children, youth and their families in this church and community. The foundations our youth build today through you—the church—will make this church stronger tomorrow. Get to know our kids before they, and this church, slip away.
Teachers, mentors and helpers are always needed, especially during the summer months. Volunteering helps you invest in the gifts God has given us. In Matthew 18:5, Jesus said, “And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me.”
Thank you for cherishing our children.

Flurries from Chris As I reflect over this past week I can’t help but be proud of all our youth who helped in some way with Youth Sunday. Each time I work with the youth on how they want to lead worship, they constantly sur-prise me and show me how much they have to give to this church and how much this congregation has made a difference in their lives.
I would like to first thank all of the youth who helped to make the Youth Sunday possible and took some role in planning and participating in the service. Sec-ond, thank you to all of the mentors who have walked alongside our youth in a formal or informal way over the years. You may not see it as you are serving our youth but your presence and your influence make a huge difference their lives. Third, I would like to thank all parents who have been willing to help with youth groups, provide meals, pray for us, and trans-port the youth back and forth from various events and activities. Finally, thank you to all of you! Because of your continued support of the youth and the church programs, you make it possible for us to do a number of amazing programs and activities that help our youth grow in their faith and mature as Christians.
I would like to celebrate the baptisms of our youth this past Sunday. Many of us were able to see either live or via a recording the baptisms of three individu-als: Logan Eno, Caleb Eaton, and Megan Eno. I have watched these three along with Zach Earls, who was baptized earlier this year, grow in their faith and make the decision to be baptized over the past few months. Congratulations to all of you who have made the decision to live a life focused on God.
Reminder! Camp forms are due to the church office by June 16! There is a link on the church website on the youth page to download these forms and all other information.
Sunday Slide Announcements If you would like to have a slide for your activity or event on Sunday mornings, all information needs to be turned in to Chris Snow by 5:00 pm on Tuesdays. You may send it by email to [email protected] or place it in his box.

Board Approves a New Staff Position Over the last several months the concept of a new staff position has been discussed and referred to the Personnel Committee. This position is currently ti-tled “Director of Ministry Involvement.” It is based on the scripture in Ephesians 4:12 (“to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ”). This full-time position will help equip our congregation in the following areas:
• Help members, regular attendees and newcomers become engaged in the activities and ministries of the congregation.
• Establish contact programs to assimilate new members and attendees
• Establish contact programs to make sure our own people do not fall between the cracks.
• Establish more contact points for those attending Salem FCC
We are looking for someone of deep faith, a people person, with strong organizational skills and a com-mitment to help equip others in the church. If you know of someone who might be interested in this position, please contact Craig Johnson, Personnel Chair or Pastor Bob.
Who is Goldie Ruth Wells? The display case in the Chalice Entry has items of Goldie Ruth Wells. She was born and raised in Dal-las, Oregon, graduated from Eugene Bible College (now Northwest Christian University), and was or-dained to the Christian ministry in 1918.
Her desire was to be a missionary; completing re-quired courses, she was appointed to the Africa Mis-sion of the Disciples of Christ in the Belgium Congo, arriving in December 1919.
She pioneered in educational missionary work, devel-oping effective methods of teaching primitive peoples and finding techniques for building upon the native folkways of culture. Her life was given to the people of the Belgium Congo (later known as Zaire; now the Democratic Republic of Congo).
