Have I ever said that to you before? I have been a fan of baseball for as long as I can remember. My team is the Cincinnati Reds; although they are doing very poorly this year. With a record that consists of only 15 wins and 32 losses they have a very firm grip on last place in the National League Central Division. On a brighter note for most of you though, the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs are both in first place in their divisions. In fact, the Cubs have the best record in Major League Baseball sporting an almost perfect inversion of the Reds record. The Cubs have racked up 31 wins and only 14 losses so far this season. A record like that doesn’t just happen by luck or chance or for no reason at all. That kind of success only comes through hard work; the members of the team are working hard to prepare themselves for every game. They are practicing hard, they are resting when rest is needed, they are keeping a good attitude, they have the main thing in mind all the time. That main thing is playing the best they can play and winning games! Baseball can be a great illustration for living a good Christian life. If we are going to do well at it, we have to put in a lot of hard work too! If we don’t...our Christian life might look more like the Red’s season than the Cub’s and who wants that; right? The author of the book of Hebrews wrote, “...let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith….” There is a race set before us. To stay with the baseball illustration we might say there is a “game” set before us. The game is discipleship, following Jesus, imitating Him, loving like Him and spreading His gospel to the ends of the earth. It’s hard work too! If we don’t practice; if we don’t rest when rest is needed; if we don’t spend time with God in the scriptures and in prayer; if we don’t commit to being with other believers in worship...we won’t be as successful at our discipleship as we could be if those things were committed to. What if we all decided to step up our game? What if we remembered this “game” is a matter of great importance and we are very vital players? What if we did the work to prepare ourselves properly? I believe we would become successful at our mission, “To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world!” I believe we would be the disciples Jesus calls us to be! I believe we would become world changers! It’s great that the Cub’s and the Sox are having such a good season so far this year. But wouldn’t it be even greater if the Church got busy having a good season? I hope you will do your part; I hope you will practice, rest, prepare, and be ready to get out there and be the best disciple you can be! Be like the Cubs...not the Reds! Blessings! DUMC College Fund 2016 We are excited to be able to offer
financial support to our college
students through our DUMC
College Fund once again. Each year,
we have a number of high school
graduates entering college in the fall.
This fund helps them to offset some of
their books and miscellaneous supplies.
Please prayerfully consider making a donation to this
great support source. You may donate in honor or
memory of a loved one. The contribution is also tax
deductible. Checks should be made payable to DUMC
with “College Fund" noted on the check and/or on an
offering envelope. You are welcome to place your
check/cash donation in the offering plate or drop if off
at the office.
Our college students welcome your charitable
contributions to this fund. THANK YOU! If you have
any questions, please contact the office at
219.865.8947.

Prom is over....tests completed....plans for fall are in the works! Graduation is
here!
For many years our church has invited all graduates from high school and
college to don their caps and gowns on a Sunday morning and celebrate this
event with the congregation. Following the church service a reception in the
Fellowship Hall was held and a congratulations cake was served. In earlier years
the parents of the juniors were responsible for organizing the reception for
graduating seniors.
We now have a scholarship fund that was created to provide college bound
graduates with a check to help with the many things needed.
One of the more unusual graduation Sundays was in 1998. Our church was
worshipping at Kahler Middle School because of ongoing construction at the
church building, eight Grads donned their Caps & Gowns on the middle school
stage that year! It was also the 50th Anniversary of Dyer United Methodist Church.
So as June approaches and summer vacations begin, let us not forget that June
2016 is the 68th Anniversary of Dyer United Methodist Church!

News from the Wellness Ministry
From Johnny and Janice Tazbir Source: http://www.cdc.gov/zika/
June is National Safety Month. Injuries are a leading cause
of disability for people of all ages – and they are the leading
cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44, but affect people
of all ages.
There are many things people can do to stay safe and prevent injuries.
Make a difference: Spread the word about ways to reduce the risk of injuries in your community,
workplace, families, and for individuals.
We can all use this month to raise awareness about important safety issues like:
Medication safety and prescription painkiller abuse: Do you discard old medications safely? Do you
know the side effects of your medications?
Driving safely: does everyone know and adhere to the rules of the road?
Biking and helmet safety: did your kids/grandkids grow out of their helmet? Make sure they fit.
Fire prevention: is your fire detector working and do you have an extinguisher?
First aid and emergency preparedness: do you have a first aid kit, emergency numbers available and a
family emergency plan?
Workplace safety: what are the steps your employer has made to ensure your safety in the workplace?
Preventing slips, trips, and falls: is there adequate lighting? loose rugs? Steps clean and clear?
Pool safety: do you have a pool alarm or gate? What are your “pool rules?”
If you think about it, potential injuries lurk at every corner. Take the time to talk about how to prevent
injuries and what to do if, unfortunately, injuries occur. Let’s keep this summer safe!

We would like to thank all of you for your support, we appreciate it so much! The donations to the trip and the fundraising we have done, with your help, has been very helpful to everyone! We want to ask you to keep all of us in your prayers before and during the trip as well. Please pray for all of us to be open to God’s leading so that His will can be done, through us.
