Engelken Editorial Summer Edition I know that every Key Clubber is looking forward to the summer right now, just as I am! However, just because the school year has come to an end does not mean that Key Club has. Contrary to popular belief, Key Club keeps going all year round, it’s the club that never stops giving! There may not be anymore general meetings but that doesn't mean there aren’t any service projects! Going away for the summer? No worries! In this newsletter you will find loads of projects and ideas for when you return to school in September! Every Key Clubber has to be ready to kick off the summer or school year with a bang! Included in this issue are all types of projects that were completed this past service year (feel free to steal the ideas)! This may be the summer edition, but this is not only for summer. Use this newsletter all year round for service projects throughout the year or put your own spin on them! Enjoy! -Tara Engelken Lieutenant Governor of Division 9 Volume 1 Issue 3

On May 24th, 2014, Division 9 had its first Divisional Council Meeting at the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library in Shrewsbury. DCMs are mandatory for all officers because pertinent information is discussed about not only the division, but about the district as well. So what was discussed at our first DCM? First, I gave everyone a recap on the Spring Regional Training Conferences. We discussed the Fall RTCs and that all officers need to attend. Next, we talked about newsletters for a while; threw around some ideas, talked about templates, etc. After that we discussed the ELIMINATE Project and how we can advocate for it. We also talked about the district advocacy project which is Hunger in the United States and I encouraged them all to participate in Students Change Hunger. We went on to Club Monthly Report Forms and ideas for fundraisers. Getting and keeping members was discussed as well as dues payments. We all decided to create and buy divisional t-shirts so if you have any creative Key Club sayings please contact your officers and tell them! We decided on tie-dye blue and I am very excited to make them! We discussed if any officers were having trouble with advisors and worked those out. Lastly, I asked all officers to encourage their parents to join or make a Kiwanis since almost none of our clubs have a sponsoring Kiwanis. After the DCM was finished, I trained all officers not already trained. I must say, the DCM went extremely well, especially since it was our first one! I am looking forward to holding more of them soon!

Twitter is one of the fastest ways to stay connected, make an account for your school’s Key Club and tweet about
events and social gatherings for your Key Clubbers!
Facebook is one of the most efficient ways to stay connected,
create and post on a page for your club or club officers. Post pictures of service projects and

What Have Division 9 Key Clubbers Been Up to This Year?
With one of the largest divisions club-wise, Division 9 has a lot of Key Clubbers, which means
a lot of amazing ideas! Here’s a look at what the different clubs have been up to this year!
Ocean Township Key Club
Throughout the year, Ocean Township Key Clubbers have been working on a project called “Shoes that Fit”. They have been collecting shoes to give them to people
that cannot afford them. It’s such a nice way to give back!
Marine Academy of Science and Technology Key Club
Every year in December around Christmas, the MAST Key Clubbers go to local shopping plazas and ring bells and sing to
raise money for the Salvation Army. Many people participate and it is a great way to get people in the holiday spirit!
Page 4
High Technology Key Club
High Technology Key Clubbers often do drives of some sort. This year they did a book drive and a stuffed animal
drive for F.A.F.E. They also do food drives which would fit right in with our advocacy project!
Rumson-Fair Haven Key Club
Just like all of the Key Clubs, RFH does a variety of activities. This year they participated in a special needs
social as well as the New Jersey Marathon. It is a fun and interactive way to get non-Key Club members involved too!
Middletown South Key Club
Many Key Clubs do service and fundraiser projects for our troops. This year in March, Middletown South Key Clubbers make cards for soldiers — a nice way to say
thank you and spread some joy!

Students Change Hunger
How the Students Change Hunger Challenge works:
Schools are categorized by the size of the student population. The schools then compete with each other to collect as much food as possible for their local food bank. At the end of the challenge, the schools that bring in the most food will be presented with awards by their local food bank.
! Each of the state’s five food banks will also nominate one school from their area to compete for the competition’s most coveted award, the Governor's Cup. The criteria will be based on the weight donated, but also on school spirit and active participation throughout the competition.
! Sign your school up by June 30th for early registration and get an added 100 bonus pounds! Go to studentschangehunger.org for more information and to register!

Hello New Jersey Key Clubbers! "International Programs is the focus of Key Club on a global scale. It takes the core values and enthusiasm from Key Clubbers and extends it across the country. From teaching members at Key Leader and ICON to connecting with outside organizations such as UNICEF, the International Programs Committee seeks to spread the message of Key Club to other communities. It combines the service of members with the assistance and dedication of partner organizations to better assist the entire world. "The Children's Miracle Network is one of Key Club's three preferred charities. CMN is a non-profit organization that works around the world to raise funds for children's hospitals, medical research, and community awareness. They have given over $5 billion to over 170 hospitals. Key Club works to help these hospitals by volunteering to spend time with patients and raise money through various fundraisers. Currently, the New Jersey District focuses on Children's Specialized Hospital, that has locations in Toms River, Egg Harbor Township, Clifton, Fanwood, Hamilton, Mountainside, New Brunswick, and Roselle Park. Visit https://giveamiracle.childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org/ for more information. "The International Programs Committee encourages you to visit Children’s Specialized Hospital at least once during the summer time. Not only will volunteering make the day of a patient, it will make yours as well! "Yours in Caring and Service, Members of the International Programs Committee New Jersey District of Key Club International

Salutations, New Jersey District! Summer is rapidly approaching! The warmer weather offers time to relax, hang out with friends, and enjoy the beach! Summer, though, is also a great time to host some fundraising projects! The District Project Steering Committee has compiled this list of easy projects to try this summer:
• Rummage Sale- Team up with your Sponsoring Kiwanis for this one! Find a local park or open space in your area. Make sure to make a reservation for that space if need be. Ask your members to donate anything they don’t want anymore, as long as the items are still in good condition. Ask members of your Sponsoring Kiwanis to donate as well, and invite them to help sell. Make sure to ask around for tables- you can ask members of your club or your Sponsoring Kiwanis, or even your school. Have the donations dropped off at a certain time, date, and location a week before the sale. On the day of, sell everything for a reasonable price If it’s a hot day, it might be a good idea to pick up some drinks and sell those for a profit, too!
• Lemonade Stand- This might sound cliche, but it is certainly worth a try! Grab some friends, squeeze some lemons, and set up a stand in your neighborhood- you’re sure to get some funds! You can even set up a stall at a local carnival or Fourth-of-July Festival!
• Book Drive Fundraiser- Have club members donate used books, still in good condition. Set up a time and location for the drop-off. Then, have an outdoor book fundraiser in your local park, with members helping to sell- you should also team up with your Sponsoring Kiwanis Club, if possible. Have some drinks on hand and sell those for a profit too, especially if it’s a hot day. Sell both for reasonable prices.
• Bake Sales- You can never go wrong with baked goods! Have members bake some goods or invite a bunch of friends at your house and start baking. You can sell all the baked goods in your neighborhood, local carnival, or Fourth of July Festival! We hope these tips keep your club active and involved this summer! Remember, with every fundraising project, we get closer to our goal of eliminating tetanus from the face of the earth! Enjoy the summer, New Jersey District!
