About the International Office

Most non-European students will need to apply for a Tier 4 student visa for their

course as soon as their CAS number has been issued by the College Registry.

This will happen soon after you meet the conditions of your offer. For guidance on

immigration matters, see our International Office Visa webpage and (if you are

overseas) the UK Border Agency webpage.

Guidance notes and application forms for student visa applications can be

downloaded directly from the UK Border Agency website or from our  website. If

you are applying outside the UK, please see our  new interactive guide tocompleting the application

Some countries may have online versions of these forms – check with your local British Embassy / UK Visa

Application Centre.

Health Insurance

Students from a small number of African and Asian

countries are required to be screened (by chest X-ray)

for tuberculosis before applying for their visas. Check

this UK Border Agency webpage to see if this applies to

you. Please also bring your screening certificate in your

hand luggage when you travel to the UK.

The College Health Centre recommends immunisations

against mumps and meningococcal meningitis. If

possible, you should arrange to start these

immunisations before coming to the UK, in order to be

protected from the start of your programme. The

vaccines are also available on campus at the beginning

of the academic year, for any students who have

difficulty in obtaining them overseas.

If your course lasts for more than six

months, you and your immediate family are

eligible for health care under the National

Health Service (NHS). Consultations with a

doctor (GP) and emergency treatment are

free of charge. However you will have to

pay standard NHS charges for medication,

spectacles and dental care.

If you are here for less than six months and

are from a non-EEA country, you are

advised to take out medical insurance, as

you will only be entitled to emergency

treatment if your home country has a

reciprocal agreement with the UK.

Useful Links

One of the main things new students ask us about is how to open a UK bank account . A number of banks

offer the possibility of opening an account before you travel to the UK, which we strongly recommend. Please see the ’Opening a Bank Account’ section of our website for more information.

If you do not open an account before you travel you should be aware that it may take a couple of weeks for

you to open a bank account in the UK, so remember to bring sufficient funds for essential purchases in

your first few weeks.

The International Office will host a range of events as part of the ImperialCollege orientation programme for International Students.

Our main event is the International Students’ Welcome on Sunday 2nd October,

which will include an introduction to College life and key College staff as well as

the opportunity to meet and talk to fellow students.

We will also be hosting an International Students’ Welcome Desk in the main

reception area the week before term begins, as well as a series of Early Bird

orientation workshops, all designed to help you settle in at Imperial. Full details

of these will be posted on our website soon.

If friends or family are coming to the UK to help you settle in. or visiting at any

point during your stay, you might also want to arrange accommodation for

them. Our Conference and Events department may be able to assist you.

If you want to start familiarising yourself with the local area before you arrive in

the UK , take a look at our interactive map of the South Kensington campus.
