the event by care man-agement supervisor Tesi Dye. The keynote speaker Sarah Mittelman of Good Samaritan Hospice shared advice on relieving care-giver stress and provided a “Caregiver’s Pledge.”

All caregivers in attendance were presented with a gift bag, which included care-giving books, tips and a gift

card. They were also treated to a delicious buffet lun-cheon provided by Monaca Turners. The afternoon’s entertainment was provided by singer Fred Kelleher.

It features a consumer-centric design and includes enhanced physician office pages, directional maps, an enhanced customizable patient activity monitor and easy access to Heritage Valley’s patient portal, Health Link.

Heritage Valley Health System has a history of using informa-tion technology to improve the healthcare experience. It has developed innovations like kiosk check-in technology, real time patient activity indicators and a patient-focused iHVHS iPhone app, as well as partnered in the region’s largest health information exchange, ClinicalConnect.

“Building on our passion for utilizing information technol-ogy to benefit patients, we challenged [our web designers] to develop a modern website based on creative analysis and best practices research,” says Dan Murphy, vice president of Institutional Advancement. The new site is an elegant and clean-looking site that allows for quick access to Heritage Valley services and locations on any digital device, from desktop computers to handheld tablets and smartphones.

One of the most interactive features on the website is the abil-ity for patients to access their own personal health informa-tion through Heritage Valley Health Link. Selecting “Manage My Health” on the home page takes visitors to Health Link, a secure online portal. Once there, visitors can conveniently and securely review their health information online, view test and lab results, read summaries from physician office or ConvenientCare visits, review health information (allergies, medications, conditions, etc.) and schedule physician office appointments with participating physicians. The Merrick Art Gallery in New Brighton recently presented “Legacies: The Merrick Masters

Art Exhibition.” “Legacies” is defined as “something that is handed down or remains from a previous generation or time.”

The exhibition opened with a VIP Preview Reception on Friday eve-ning, then the public was invited to attend over the weekend. The juror for the show was Carol R. Brode, as-sistant professor of art at Seton Hill University and director of Harlan Gallery at Seton Hill University in Greensburg.

The gallery also just announced a call for artists for the ninth annual Midland Arts Council Show. Artists in any two-dimensional medium may apply. Prizes will be awarded. The deadline is June 8; all art must

be hand-carried to the Midland Bor-ough Building located at 936 Midland Avenue. BCSN

Older adults in Beaver County are invited to the fifth annual Senior Swing into Summer Dance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 6 at Center Stage, located at 1495 Old Brodhead Road in Cen-ter Township. This dance is truly unique in the Beaver County area. It provides an opportunity for the not-so- young to enjoy an afternoon of music and dancing.

But there is much more to this event. Imagine that you loved to dance but were no longer able to because you were bound to a wheelchair or walker. Imagine that some other disability kept you from that one activity you once loved.

RSVP invites seniors to “swing into summer”The now famous “wheel-chair dance” gives everyone an opportunity to move to the beat of wonderful mu-sic once again. Some of our guests come from skilled facilities, nursing homes and adult day care center. Many of these guests are in wheelchairs, use walkers or are dealing with other forms of disabilities. Each person who needs help is assisted by someone else on the dance floor. The assistants may be someone young or old who has come to enjoy the afternoon, or volunteers who have come just to help. The expressions on the faces of both the assistants and those being assisted are pure delight!

Please join us! It’s called a seniors dance but everyone is invited. You will spend a few hours enjoying the delightful music of Wally Merriman, a light lunch of hot dogs and cookies, and an opportunity to visit with friends old and new.

This is an afternoon that promises to leave you with a sense of joy for having a

few moments of carefree expression—and perhaps a sense of contentment know-ing that you’ve contrib-uted to the joy of someone else’s day.

There is one more thing that you might want to know about this event. Do you remember any of these

Sometimes it is not shopping and ac-quiring stuff that we remember most fondly. Sometimes it is life experiences or activities that you remember, and they bring a smile to your face.

* I love when the first lettuce and basil seeds sprout, because I know some good food will be available down the road.

* When my nephews were young, I always brought them a little surprise when I’d come back from vacation. While in Lancaster, I bought them joke books at the book outlet. I gave them the books one Mother’s Day when we were all together for dinner. Well, they looked at the books and started telling jokes. Sometimes they said that anyone at the table but their father could answer, because they knew he

would know the answer. They were right. We were all laughing so hard, and it was a hilarious and memorable Mother’s Day.

* My roommate from college and I were both in Jaycee chapters—me in Beaver County and she in the eastern part of the state. When I went to visit her last year, she invited two other Jaycees near her to join us for dinner at her home. Well, we started playing Scrabble and things got a bit lively. I started some “friendly bashing” of my friends for taking space on the game board that I wanted to use for my fantastic six-letter words. They were laughing because I usually do not get so involved or riled up about such things. One of my roommate’s children, who is a ‘tween, decided that she wanted to join the game. Then the most memorable thing happened: At one point, she stood up and said, “I think I have gas.” Then she started laughing and ran off. We all burst out laughing. We still laugh when we think about what a fun day we had.

* Beaver County History Weekend in May featured music. I was at the Vicary Mansion, where piano, pump organ, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, dulcimer and mandolin music was played throughout the weekend. All of the volunteers commented that there was a great, upbeat mood in the man-sion with all these types of great music being played. The funniest experience for me was when the executive direc-tor asked some of us if we have heard the song “Hallelujah, I’m a Bum.” None of us had heard of this American folk song published in 1908 about the circumstances of being a hobo. She had the music and played it on the piano, and we sang along. What a day! BCSN

The deadline to apply for a rebate on property taxes or rent paid in 2013 is June 30, 2014. Pick up an application at the Beaver County Office on Aging or a state legislator’s office.

* Practical Strategies for Lower-ing Caregiver Stress” is a video produced by the Department of Aging.The video features Dr. Steven H. Zarit, a professor and head of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Penn State University, as well as a researcher in caregiving. In the video, Zarit provides infor-mation about how to effectively manage stress for caregivers and how to care for a loved one with memory loss. Baked Kale ChipsKale has been grown for a few thousand years, and it is becoming more popular with American cooks. It is a leafy vegetable of the cabbage family, but it does not form a head. Kale is a source of Vitamins A, C and K, plus a source of fiber, calcium and potassium. Kale chips are a fun treat to eat.

• 1 bunch kale

• 1 T. olive oil

• ¼ t. salt

• ¼ t. garlic powder

Wash and thor-oughly dry kale. Cut leaves from tough stems. Tear kale into bite size pieces. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, drizzle oil, salt and garlic powder on kale and toss to coat leaves. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper and place coated kale on it. Bake until edges are crisp but not burnt, 10 to 15 minutes. BCSN

Several of the care managers at the Beaver County Office on Aging have become aware that a few consumers on their caseloads have been getting swindled by scam

artists--some who call on the telephone and some who send a letter and ask to have an appointment at your home. One person just lost a very small amount of money and a case-worker prevented another older adult from losing a large amount of money.

These con artists can be slick and can catch you off guard in parting with your money. Maybe you are not feeling well, maybe they are talking nicely to you, maybe they are telling you that they can resolve your financial problems or fix your home. As always, you must be careful. It is not disrespect-ful to say “no” to the caller or person coming to your home. Also, scams are taking place through the use of the postal service and on the Internet. As more older adults are starting to get online with email and websites, it can be difficult to determine whether something is legitimate or not. Take time to think. It is okay to first talk with your children, relatives, lawyer, caseworker or the information specialist at BCOA.

Tidbits of Beaver County history• Family Services of Beaver County is the oldest social service agency in the county. Established in 1887, it provides counsel-ing services and is located in New Brighton.

• The Beaver County Bar Association was founded March 18, 1876. Located in Beaver, the group has 200 members. The association provides legal education programs, and works with the court and county government to improve admin-istrative procedures in the court system. It also provides a lawyer referral service and the opportunity for its members to contribute to the community through pro bono service, youth programs, community education and charitable giving.

• The waltz song “The Penn-Beaver Hotel” was written and copyrighted by J. Abruno and composed by John L. Robin-son in 1926. The sheet music cost 25 cents when it was first published. The song is about people being busy building the hotel, which would boost the county and state and bring prosperity to the area.

• Do you know how Vanport Township got its name in 1835? It came from two sources. At the time, Martin Van Buren was a Democratic nominee for president. People wanted to name the town after him, “Matty Van.” The port came as a result of a lot of pottery being shipped from the municipality.

• New Sewickley Township is a part of depreciation lands that were set aside by Act of Assembly on March 12, 1783 to be awarded to men who served in the Revolutionary War.

Rescheduled concert Featuring Brian Roman concludes BVCCA season

The Beaver Valley Community Concert Association closes its season on June 3 with a special concert featuring the dramatic voice stylings of Brian Ro-

man. This concert replaces the Bach to the Future concert that was cancelled in March due to a death in the family of one of the performers.

Brian’s rich and versatile voice gives passionate rendi-tions to the great music of Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Bobby Daren and Paul Anka, among others. Not only does he entertain, he inspires. Brian’s voice, humor and warmth create moments that leave audiences clamoring for more. His signature song “As Long as I Have Music” reveals his passion and gratitude for his wonderful gift of song.
