A lot has been happening in the Archdiocese of New York and here at Christ the King Parish and I want to keep you updated. This past Thursday, June 6th, all priests, deacons, women and men religious, were invited to one of two sessions that were held at Saint Joseph’s Seminary concerning “Making All Things New”. Do you remember hearing about that term: “MAKING ALL THINGS NEW”? About three years
ago the Archdiocese asked parishioners in all parishes to fill out a questionnaire concerning their thoughts about parish ministry, parish finances and the allocation of priests in parishes. Much was learned through the survey. In many parishes, including this one, parishioners felt that there were too many parishes (though no one wants to see their parish closed or merged) and not enough priests to staff them. Overwhelmingly parishioners agreed (in all areas of the Archdiocese) that if a Parish could not support itself financially that Parish could be considered for closure or consolidation. This past Thursday the process of “Making All things New” has begun in earnest. All who were at the meeting heard presentations concerning what is going to be taking place in order to reach the decision of which Parishes will be targeted for possible mergers, consolidations or closings. Between now and June of 2014 the Archdiocese, the Reed Group (who has been hired to assist in this process), pastors, parishioners and all interested parties will come to as much of a unified decision as possible of what parishes will be affected. The Cardinal has stated that once those parishes have been identified it will take two to five years from June of 2014 to implement all of the decisions. WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN HERE? Only God knows at this moment. However, I do know that the primary factor in all of this is that there are fewer priests than ever. This past May six priests were ordained. There were over twelve retirements. A fifty percent loss. We just don’t have enough priests to staff all the parishes. We will keep you informed as we become aware of more information.
Secondly, we welcome STEPHEN FRASER as the new organist of Christ the King Church. Tom, who had been playing for us for almost two years (after the sudden death of George Boyer) has relocated down South. We wish Tom well in his new position and pray that his move, out of New York State, will be an easy one. Stephen is an accomplished organist and singer. His most recent position has been as a substitute organist at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.
Thirdly, we are in the last stage of negotiations with Yonkers Public Schools for the RENTAL OF THE SCHOOL BUILDING. Yonkers is seeking to make School 16 a Kindergarten through Eighth Grade facility. In order to expand they are going to rent the School to house the early grades. Financially it will help the Parish. (Remember, though, it is the regular Sunday collections, not extraordinary income, that the Archdiocese looks at in order to see if a Parish is financially viable.) We will let you know when the contract is signed. However, please be aware that there will be some changes to the front of the building that will have to take place in order for the Public School to use the building. We will let you know as they are decided.
Fourthly, in anticipation of the realignment of Parishes and the shifting of personnel there are more than fifty ASSIGNMENT CHANGES that are taking place now. More will take place before the end of the summer. I received a call a couple of weeks ago asking me to become Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle as of August 1st. It has a very large stone Church that seats about six hundred people. It is one of the largest parishes in New Rochelle and has six buildings adjacent to the Church and a large cemetery which also belongs to the Parish. The Church seems to be in need of a massive renovation. If this is true it would be the third Church in a row that I have renovated. Pray it is not true; I still need to recuperate from this last one. There are many changes that are taking place for people that you know, or might know about. FATHER GIULIANO is becoming the Pastor of two Parishes: the one he is in now (St. Charles in Dover Plains) and Saint John’s in Pawling. He will move down to Pawling which is the larger Parish. FATHER ASHMAN, from Saint Anthony’s (over the hill) is becoming the Administrator of Immaculate Conception Church in Irvington. FATHER BAUER (the Pastor of Saint Anthony’s) is retiring and moving to California. The new Pastor of Saint Anthony’s will be FATHER ARTHUR MASTROLIA. As you might know FATHER ANTHONY, from Saint Bartholomew’s, is being transferred by his religious order. FATHER GEORGE KUHN, the Pastor of Saint Joseph’s (down by the Getty Square area) is retiring. There might be more that is happening here in Yonkers but these are the ones I know of. THE NEW PASTOR OF CHRIST THE KING HAS BEEN NAMED BUT NOT YET BEEN MADE PUBLIC. He came here about a week ago to look at the place. He was impressed. As soon as his name is made public I will let you know. PLEASE PRAY FOR AN INCREASE OF VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND RELIGIOUS LIFE. Vocations are so sorely needed if our Parishes are going to continue on.
PRAYER FOR THE NEWLY CONFIRMED Heavenly Father, in the Old Testament, your prophets and priests would anoint the faithful with oil. Through this holy anointing you made known to them their mission on earth. On Pentecost, at the birth of the Church, you sent your Holy Spirit on the disciples. On that day, the promise you gave of your Spirit was fulfilled to the whole world. As these newly confirmed go out into the world preserve the gifts of the Spirit in their hearts. May the completion of their initiation through their Confirmation help them fulfill their baptismal promises as members of the Body of Christ. Amen.
