SUNDAY, JUNE 8 – Embedded Information Services

11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. It’s a Brave MOOC World: Challenges and Opportunities for LibrariansMassive open online courses (MOOCs) are gaining popularity as another tool in the expanding field of learning technologies. At the same time, the librarian’s role is being redefined as many move from traditional reference and instruction roles to offering more integrated and embedded information services, whether through subject-specific or general expertise. What opportunities do MOOCs offer librarians, and how can librarians adapt to and take advantage of these opportunities? In this panel discussion, three MOOC practitioners will discuss how librarians can “fit” as embedded learners, connectors and collaborators within the MOOC learning environment.

1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Disruption, Alignment, and Embedded Librarianship: Connecting the Dots and Avoiding the Traps As members of a disrupted profession, librarians require new strategies to realign what we do with the changed expectations of our employers. Embedded librarianship is just such an innovative strategy, but traps and pitfalls await the unwary. Speaker David Shumaker will briefly survey the core characteristics of embedded librarianship, discuss some of the common traps and pitfalls, and offer strategies for escaping them or avoiding them altogether.

MONDAY, JUNE 9 – Digital Content and Big Data

8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. A.D. (After Digitization): Managing and Marketing Your Digital Content This session will look at case studies from media organizations and other institutions that have digitized newspapers and local history records, not just to preserve access, but also to drive Website traffic and maximize revenues. Participants will see how blog posts, partnerships and other promotions can highlight historical digital content and how new revenue streams can be developed from related projects, including e-books, commemorative pages and photo sales.

10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Data for Dinner: Data Mining from Farm to Table Many aspects of our lives are now affected by “big data,” and what and how we eat are no exception. From collecting precise agricultural data to enhance crop yields to mining data about consumer behavior to enhance sales, the food on our tables has likely been flavored in some way by big data. This session will bring to light some of the fascinating practices in data mining that relate to the food we eat. Whether you are a corporate information professional interested in learning more about this increasingly important marketing practice, an academic librarian hoping to better understand the role of big data in research, or simply a consumer wondering about the food you buy and eat, this session will have something for you.

The Spotlight Series Sessions highlight need-to-know topics for info pros. Themes, different each day, reflect trends and areas of high interest to attendees.

12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Information Overload: Taking Advantage of Taxonomies Information overload is not a new problem, but many organizations are taking a new approach to managing it. Enterprise content management (ECM) tools offer organizations the advantage of integrating Websites, repositories, collaboration sites, blogs, wikis, and other information channels. Maximizing the effectiveness of these tools, however, requires the use of metadata and taxonomies to focus on needed information. In this session, ECM managers share strategies to increase the effectiveness of ECM tools as knowledge management platforms.

4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. State Government Information and the Copyright Conundrum The ability of states to assert copyright over their publications still exists to this day. This privilege significantly affects and impedes the ability of knowledge institutions to digitize historic state publications, capture and archive born-digital publications, and freely disseminate these publications through library catalogs or digital repositories. Bernadette Bartlett, Library of Michigan, and Kris Kasianovitz, Stanford University, have embarked on a project to demonstrate the constraints that copyright law places on citizens, researchers, academic institutions and digital repositories (like HathiTrust) that want to release scanned post-1923 state government publications into the public domain and to chart a path forward to bring about change in this area.

(Note: this project focuses on publications and NOT records, which are governed and managed in a very different way.)

TUESDAY, JUNE 10 – Leadership in the Human Age

8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Academic Libraries: Supporting Innovation and Entrepreneurship Academic institutions are increasingly focusing on fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. As the Kauffman Foundation notes, “Entrepreneurship, one of the fastest-growing subjects in today’s undergraduate curricula, has moved from the margins of higher education to the mainstream.” Libraries can support the incubation of ideas and creativity (which are integral to innovation and start-up culture) by opening up their spaces and expanding their services—and, in fact, many are already doing so. The speakers will share how their libraries partnered with other departments and even outside corporate partners to do just this. 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.Working Across Cultures Inter-cultural awareness and cross-cultural communication skills are essential competencies for information professionals in the global workplace. This session will bring together a panel of speakers who will provide some valuable advice on how to develop cultural intelligence and approach cross-border business relationships. They will also provide some entertaining examples (in the style of the HSBC advertisements) of how to avoid misunderstanding and embarrassment. 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.Developing and Leading a Knowledge-Sharing Culture This session will explore the structural and human resources changes needed to build an organizational culture that encourages and motivates people to share information and knowledge. By the end of the session, participants will be able to determine where their organization lies on the collaboration continuum, identify ways they can influence their organization to be more adept at sharing knowledge, and understand how they can be more effective at initiating and championing the shift.

8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Knowledge Strategy: Developing the Enterprise-Wide Knowledge Culture (KMKS103) Organizational effectiveness begins with an enterprise-wide knowledge culture, incorporating a knowledge strategy that matches the company’s business strategy. This course provides guidelines for developing the vision, mission, and values statements to align knowledge management (KM) and knowledge services with organizational priorities. Course participants will learn to identify critical steps–including change management and change implementation–for launching or enhancing service delivery for the benefit of the larger organization. Topics include knowledge strategy basics, organizational structure and the environment for KM/knowledge services, visioning vs. planning, determining strategic direction, change management/change implementation, infrastructure, and planning for future needs. Teaching Others about Copyright and Licensing (CCM700) This course will prepare you to establish an enterprise-wide copyright education program. Topics will include educating senior-level staff, librarians, and employees about copyright management; awareness of print and digital copyright issues; avoiding unauthorized uses of content by end users; ensuring access to copyright information in your organization; explaining difficult legal concepts in plain language; developing tools for copyright education; and the development of a copyright policy.

8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Chemical Information Sources, Requests, and ReferenceThe course takes a hands-on approach to introduce learners to the types of questions that chemical researchers ask and reference sources that can be used to answer them. It will provide an overview of the structure of the chemical literature, types of reference sources in the chemical sciences, unique access points for chemical information, and strategies for an effective search. Informal lectures, interspersed with hands-on reference questions, will compare and describe the major chemical information resources.

Maximizing Consultant-Client Partnerships: Key Success Factors Whether we work for ourselves or an organization, most of us in the information profession have been a consultant (providing knowledge or expertise to others) or client (receiving knowledge or services from someone else). This session enables attendees to make the most of such partnership opportunities. Topics will include negotiating for services, understanding the roles of the consultant and the client, establishing consultant access to and sharing of information, agreeing on deliverables and time lines, addressing “bumps along the road,” and enabling a partnership that lasts beyond the project.

FRIDAY, JUNE 6 SATURDAY, JUNE 7

Presenting Information in Visual Formats: Tools for Adding Insights and Value to Your DeliverablesIn an age of do-it-yourself search tools and information overload, it’s no longer a matter of how much information you find—it’s what you do with it. Our clients crave answers and insights—not more information, and we need to find new ways to deliver results in order to stay relevant. Displaying research results in charts, diagrams, data maps, and other visual formats adds impact and brings clarity where words often fail. In this course, instructor Marcy Phelps shares some low-cost techniques for packaging and delivering information that will add useful insights for clients while increasing your value. Learn how to choose the right information graphic, simple tools for creating graphics, and tips for communicating your message more effectively—no coding required! Bring your laptops and create some templates that you can use right away.

8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Copyright Compliance and Management (CCM600) Learn how to manage the use of copyright-protected materials. Topics include the meaning of copyright management, avoiding copyright infringement lawsuits, copyright risk management, obtaining copyright permissions for print and digital works, the role of copyright collectives (such as the Copyright Clearance Center), negotiating and interpreting digital license agreements, unlocatable copyright owners, and what to do if your organization is accused of copyright infringement.

Fundamentals of Knowledge Management and Knowledge Services (KMKS101) This course links knowledge management (KM) theory to knowledge services (KS), the management methodology that brings together information management, KM, and strategic learning. The goal of knowledge services--characterized as the practical side of KM--is to strengthen research and enterprise-wide knowledge asset management, thus enabling contextual decision making and accelerated innovation. Participants learn techniques for implementing knowledge services and, in so doing, learn to support the organization as a knowledge culture. Topics include KM/KS history and an exploration of the KM/KS framework. Participants will develop an action plan to take back to their organization.

8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The Art and Science of Negotiating and Managing Contracts This course is designed to help information professionals who have five-plus years of experience in supplier management and contract negotiations at a material level. The course will focus on the details of contracts, usage requirements and rules, contract models, client/vendor relationships, and potential opportunities to reopen previously negotiated contracts. Business cases and role playing will be included. There will be a concentration on contract types/models and negotiation strategies.

Future-Oriented Analytical Models The role of the librarian is changing from information retrieval to information interpretation, especially in the fast-changing world of IT. In this session, attendees will develop an understanding of forward-looking analytical frameworks, models and methods from August Jackson, a veteran competitive intelligence analyst and three-time SLA conference speaker.

Introduction to Taxonomies A well-built taxonomy is part of the information architecture underlying Websites, corporate intranets, search, and access to database content. This course introduces participants to the basic methodologies and techniques for taxonomy development and provides an overview of taxonomy standards and their application to search, Websites, publishing, retail and e-commerce, records management and other organizational needs. After defining controlled vocabularies and identifying their core standards, participants will explore key concepts of taxonomies, thesauri, indexing, classification and filtering. Discussion topics will include the basics of a taxonomy record and fundamental term relationships. Attendees will put concepts into practice through multiple exercises, including creating a simple taxonomy. Related software tools will also be discussed.

Page 10: JUNE 8 – 10

10

Taxonomy Integration: Content Management, Navigation and Search Move past the basics and gain a deeper understanding of the role that taxonomies play in organizations, especially in productivity applications like content management, Website navigation, and search. This all-day course begins with the basics of taxonomy integration and moves on to analyze specific case studies that show how you can enrich and improve your Website, enhance your metadata, and boost your search engine’s relevance. You’ll come away with an understanding of how you can be a successful member of a software development team and have a set of best practices you can apply immediately.

1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

CI Success for Librarians and Info Pros, from Start-up to World Class This course will present a roadmap for competitive intelligence success using two different perspectives. It will be taught in a workshop format, with group exercises, open discussion and practical case studies. Geared to the novice as well as the advanced practitioner, the instructors will take a fundamentals approach to CI, looking first at what the discipline is and is not. Topics will include how librarians/info pros can transition into doing CI and how to source primary and secondary search; there will also be a discussion around analytical tools and fitness. Attendees will study real examples of things that work and don’t work and learn how to establish leadership and a “voice” within their respective organizations.

Digitization on a Shoestring Targeted largely at still image collections, this course provides librarians, archivists, digital imaging specialists, and other related information professionals with guidance on cost-effective approaches to digitization that do not sacrifice content quality. The instructors will examine the expanding world of digital collections and provide participants with digitization practices and approaches that can achieve institutional goals while working within budgetary limitations. A wide variety of topics will be covered, including content management, the technical side of digitization, digital preservation, and workflow design. This course will also serve as a venue for information professionals to learn, share, and discuss practices in the broad field of digitization.

EBLIP for All: Using an Evidence-Based Approach in Your Library The instructors will introduce the tenets of evidence-based library and information practice (EBLIP) to participants and demonstrate tools and strategies for applying evidence in practice. The course will look beyond the formal evidence-based practice (EBP) model and place evidence within the context of real-world decision making.
