Let me not take my freedom, both physical and spiritual, for granted. May I always remember that my freedom was purchased with a very high price. My freedom cost others their very lives.

Lord, today, bless those who have served and continue to give their lives for my freedom. With favor and bounty meet their needs and watch over their families.

St. Ann School is in the middle of its Annual Appeal. Our goal this year is $60,000. To date we have raised $40,828 (68%) even with the current health crisis. All proceeds go to benefit the school. The economic environment today is a challenging time for families who wish to take advantage of a Catholic education at St. Ann School. Those families need our help. Our St. Ann School Appeal had $13,000 on May 31, a huge shortfall to our $60,000 goal. We’ve exceeded $60,000 in three of the previous four years. Thank you to all who have donated. To energize our drive, a parish family has stepped forward with a $20,000 matching donation pledge. If we can reach the $33,000 plateau by July 5

th, the full $20,000 will be contributed. The

pledge will match all St. Ann School Appeal donations between $13,000 and $33,000 paid by July 5. Special thanks goes to those families who have already helped us raise $13,000. That's key in meeting our goal. Two major factors are impacting St. Ann School plus existing and prospective student families for the upcoming year.

CoVid 19’s impact on families and employment reduces the affordability of a Catholic school education.

Millions of dollars in tax credits for scholarships were un-claimed in 2019 for use in the 2020-2021 school year. Because of a strong response in designating tax credits from our parish, St. Ann’s was able to maintain 27 scholarships for returning students, but unable to add new scholarships to replace four graduating students. We had 41 scholarship students just three years ago. The majority of schools lost scholarships for returning students due to a lack of claimed tax credits.

As Catholics one of our roles is to recruit and develop disciples of Christ. What better way than through our children and St. Ann School! Catholic Schools stress the value of self-discipline and commitment. Students explore their faith through classes and activities in Scripture, Sacraments, Church, and morality via an all-Catholic faculty. To contribute you can:

A Reasonable Fear? Being Catholic in the time of COVID Deacon Patrick W. Lappert, MD

“And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?” ~Matthew 6:27.

This question, which Jesus asked his followers, was part of a longer discourse about the Father’s great con-cern for his children. He was encouraging them to be confident in God’s providence, and less concerned about the cares of the day.

We are living in a time in history in which we spend most of our day worrying about tomorrow. We are so plugged-in to the 24 hour news cycle, the constant twitter stream, and time line on Facebook that we do not allow ourselves a minute of peace and reflection. We go looking for bad news, imagining that by knowing what is happening in the world, we will somehow turn the world in the direction of good. Everyone is trying to “raise our awareness” about some thing or other, so that we can be as “woke” as they obviously are.

There is such a thing as reasonable fear and we have to understand what it is, so that we can understand when we are being unreasonable about our fears. There is also a huge difference between trusting in God to protect us as we live prudent lives, and presuming upon the mercy of God as we live crazy and reckless lives. It is possible to be prudent without being fearful, and between trusting in God, and presuming upon him.

The Catholic life is not about choosing faith over reason. Neither is it about choosing science over religion. Catholic life is always a both/and proposition. We are a people of faith, but we also invented the scientific method, and the university. We don’t put science aside, just because we have faith. In a minute you will see why this is important.

I have been a physician for 40 years. I’ve spent a lifetime reading scientific papers, and sifting through medi-cal information, trying to figure out what is good science, and what is weak.

There is no question but that this “COVID19” as it is often called, is something new. The way in which it en-ters the body and the effects that it has is novel in several ways. When something new comes along, it is a reasonable fear that it might turn into a worldwide disaster, and it becomes very reasonable to take aggres-sive precautions, like blocking travel in and out of affected areas, and isolation of infected persons. We inves-tigate how severe the disease is, how it is transmitted, how we can immunize people against it, and how to best treat those who develop symptoms.

We have been in this pandemic now for about 6 months. What do we know so far?

1) We don’t know how many people have been exposed, because the majority of people who are exposed have no symptoms. The more people we test, the more we see this.

2) The risk of developing the illness is low, and depends upon how old you are, and if you have other illness-es, like diabetes, cancer, heart disease and so on.

3) The population of Alabama is just shy of 5 million people. We have had about 30,000 cases reported. This means that so far, your risk of getting the disease is 0.6%.

4) Of the people in Alabama who have contracted the disease, we have 838 reported deaths. This means that if you get symptoms of the disease, and the test says you are positive, the likelihood of dying from it is 2.7%. Over 97% of the people who get sick from COVID19 get over it.

5) Overall, 838 deaths in a population of 5 million people means that 0.00002% of the population has died of COVID19.

6) In Alabama, the risk of dying from COVID19 is around 16 deaths for every 100,000 people. In Morgan County the numbers are far smaller. We have had somewhere between 2 and 4 deaths in a population of 125,000.

7) In Alabama, the risk of dying in a motor vehicle accident is 22.2 deaths for every 100,000 people. This means that for persons living in Morgan County, motor vehicles are 5 times more likely to kill you than COVID19.

So, six months of tracking the disease shows that it isn’t spreading nearly as fast as we feared at first. Rapid spread has become an unreasonable fear because we now see that the risk of contracting the disease is less

We are also seeing that the vast majority of people, who actually get the disease, recover from it. The peo-ple most likely to die from it are the elderly. 50% of all COVID deaths have been among people over the age of 75. It doesn’t seem to pose a huge risk among younger people.

Most of us, when we get in our cars to go to work, or to church, have what could be called a reasonable fear. We make sure to fasten our seat belts,; we don’t drink and drive; we take care of our cars. This is all reasonable, because car accidents can be devastating. As a trauma surgeon, I can tell you just how devas-tating. Fear of death and injury in a car accident is a reasonable fear, and it does not keep us locked in our houses.

Death in a motor vehicle is between 10 and 20 times more likely to happen to us than is death from COVID19. Yet we fear it more than we fear driving to the Publix for groceries. It has now become an unrea-sonable fear.

When the pandemic started, we were told to socially isolate, wear masks, carry disinfectant and so on, so that we could “flatten the curve”, that is to say we would reduce the rate at which new cases developed, and thus protect our medical system from being overloaded. “The curve” is the rate of new cases. The “area un-der the curve” is the total number of cases. The total number of cases is not improved by social distancing, or mask, or disinfectant hand sanitizer. We just get the cases over a longer period of time.

Flattening the curve has certainly preserved our medical resources. In fact it has been so effective, our hos-pitals are virtually empty. People aren’t going in for cancer screenings, or diabetes checks or all the other routine things that doctors and hospitals offer because everyone is isolating. Furthermore, social isolation has caused a massive spike in suicides, as people’s businesses fold, jobs are lost, and there is no one near to help.

Six months into the pandemic, and we are seeing that we are suffering from unreasonable fear. Worst of all, it is unreasonable fear that is keeping people from coming to Church, keeping them away from the sacra-ments, and keeping them away from the means that God has left us for growing in grace, without which we will not see God.

As a physician for 40 years, I can tell you that the single most common measure of success as a doctor is “life expectancy”. How long are your patients living in the face of whatever ails them? This is a very worldly, carnal sort of measure. One of the most important things I learned, when I went from being an atheist sur-geon, to being a Catholic is that it is not about how long you live, but how well you die.

No matter how long we live, at the end our lives will seem to have lasted only a few moments. But opening up before us will be eternity. What that eternity will be like for us, whether eternal joy, or everlasting sorrow, depends upon our love of God, and therefore our love of neighbor. Because of our fallen nature, we are not able to lift ourselves up to God. The good news of the gospel is that He has come down to us in the person of Jesus Christ, and he makes himself present to us in the sacramental life of the Church. For this reason it is a reasonable fear to remember that if we are not coming to the sacraments, we are slipping away from eternal joy, and slipping in the direction of everlasting sorrow.

So faith and reason taken together tell us what we must do. Science tells us that for most people, fear of COVID19 has become an unreasonable fear. At the same time, faith tells us that staying away from Mass and confession places us in a mortal danger that is eternal.

If you are under the age of 75, if you do not have other illnesses like lung disease, diabetes, certain can-cers, or have gotten chemotherapy, then perhaps it is time to put away your unreasonable fears, and come back to Mass. You will not be scorned for wearing a mask or not wearing a mask. You will be able to main-tain distance from others, but please do not distance yourself from the mercy of God. Come to Mass.

If there are family members or friends who have been staying away because they were afraid, you might want to share this with them. We all have a duty in the salvation of souls. We were given that responsibility when we were baptized and confirmed. We must not let unreasonable fear keep us from it.

Vivimos en un tiempo de la historia en el que pasamos la mayor parte de nuestro día preocupándonos por el mañana. Estamos tan conectados al ciclo de noticias de 24 horas, la constante transmisión de Twitter y la línea de tiempo en Facebook que no nos permitimos ni un minuto de paz y reflexión. Vamos en busca de malas noticias, imaginando que al saber lo que está sucediendo en el mundo, de alguna manera converti-remos el mundo hacia el bien. Todo el mundo está tratando de "levantar nuestra conciencia" sobre alguna cosa u otra, para que podamos estar tan "despertados" como obviamente ellos lo están.

1) No sabemos cuántas personas han estado expuestas, porque la mayoría de las personas que están expuestas no tienen síntomas. Cuantas más personas probamos, más claro es esto.

2) El riesgo de desarrollar la enfermedad es bajo, y depende de la edad que tengas, y si tienes otras en-fermedades, como diabetes, cáncer, enfermedades cardíacas, etc.

3) La población de Alabama es algo menos de 5 millones de personas. Hemos tenido alrededor de 30.000 casos reportados. Esto significa que hasta ahora, el riesgo de contraer la enfermedad es del 0,6%.

4) De las personas en Alabama que han contraído la enfermedad, hay 838 muertes reportadas. Esto signi-fica que si tienes síntomas de la enfermedad, y la prueba dice que usted es positivo, la probabilidad de morir de ella es 2.7%. Más del 97% de las personas que se enferman de COVID19 lo superaron.

5) En total, 838 muertes en una población de 5 millones de personas significa que el 0,00002% de la po-blación ha muerto de COVID19.

6) En Alabama, el riesgo de morir por COVID19 es de alrededor de 16 muertes por cada 100.000 perso-nas. En el Condado de Morgan los números son mucho más pequeños. Hemos tenido entre 2 y 4 muertes en una población de 125.000 habitantes.

7) En Alabama, el riesgo de morir en un accidente automovilístico es 22,2 muertes por cada 100.000 per-sonas. Esto significa que para las personas que viven en el condado de Morgan, los vehículos de motor tienen 5 veces más probabilidades de matarte que COVID19.

También estamos viendo que la gran mayoría de las personas que realmente contraen la enfermedad, se recuperan de ella. Las personas más propensas a morir por ella son los ancianos. El 50% de todas las muertes por COVID se han producido entre personas mayores de 75 años. No parece representar un gran riesgo entre los más jóvenes.

La mayoría de nosotros, al subir al auto para ir al trabajo o a la iglesia, tenemos lo que podría llamarse un miedo razonable. Nos aseguramos de abrocharnos los cinturones de seguridad,; no conducimos tomados; cuidamos de nuestros coches. Todo esto es razonable, porque los accidentes automovilísticos pueden ser devastadores. Como cirujano de trauma, puedo asegurarte que es así. El miedo a la muerte y lesiones en un accidente automovilístico es un temor razonable; pero ese temor no nos mantiene encerrados en nues-tras casas.

La muerte en un vehículo de motor tiene entre 10 y 20 veces más probabilidades de que nos suceda que la muerte por COVID19. Sin embargo, tememos la enfermedad más de lo que tememos conducir al Publix pa-ra comprar comida. Ahora se ha convertido en un miedo irrazonable.

Cuando comenzó la pandemia, se nos dijo que aisláramos socialmente, que usáramos máscarillas, que lle-váramos desinfectante, etc., para que pudiéramos "aplanar la curva”; es decir, reduciríamos la velocidad del desarrollo de nuevos casos, y así protegeríamos el sistema médico de sobrecarga. "La curva" es la tasa de nuevos casos. El "área debajo de la curva" es el número total de casos. El número total de casos no vie-ne a ser menos por distanciamiento social, o mascarilla, o desinfectante de manos. Pero surgen los casos durante un período de tiempo más largo.

Aplanar la curva sin duda ha preservado nuestros recursos médicos. De hecho, ha sido tan eficaz que nues-tros hospitales están prácticamente vacíos. Las personas no van a hacerse exámenes de detección del cán-cer, ni controles de diabetes o todas las demás cosas rutinarias que los médicos y los hospitales ofrecen, porque todos están aislándose. Además, el aislamiento social ha causado un aumento masivo de suicidios, a medida que las empresas desaparecen, se pierden puestos de trabajo y no hay nadie cerca para ayudar.

Seis meses después de la pandemia, y ya estamos viendo que estamos sufriendo de miedo irrazonable. Lo peor de todo es que es el temor irrazonable que está impidiendo que las personas vengan a la Iglesia, man-teniéndolas alejadas de los sacramentos y manteniéndolas alejadas de los medios que Dios nos ha dejado para crecer en gracia, sin la cual no veremos a Dios.

Como médico durante 40 años, puedo decirle que la medida más común de éxito como médico es "expectativa de vida": cuánto tiempo viven sus pacientes frente a lo que les aflija. Esta es una medida muy mundana y carnal. Una de las cosas más importantes que aprendí, cuando pasé de ser cirujano ateo a ser católico es que no se trata de cuánto tiempo vives, sino de lo bien que mueres. No importa cuánto tiempo vivamos, al final de nuestras vidas parecerá que sólo duró unos momentos. Pero al morir se nos abre la eternidad. Cómo será esa eternidad para nosotros, o gozo eterno o dolor eterno, depende de nuestro amor a Dios y de nuestro amor al prójimo. Debido a nuestra naturaleza caída, no somos capaces de elevarnos a Dios. La buena noticia del Evangelio es que Dios ha venido a nosotros en la persona de Jesucristo, y se ha-ce presente a nosotros en la vida sacramental de la Iglesia. Por esta razón es un temor razonable recordar que si no estamos llegando a los sacramentos, nos estamos alejando del gozo eterno y resbalando en la dirección del dolor eterno. Así que la fe y la razón tomadas juntas nos dicen que lo que debemos hacer. La ciencia nos dice que para la mayoría de la gente, el miedo a COVID19 se ha convertido en un miedo irrazo-nable. Al mismo tiempo, la fe nos dice que mantenernos alejados de la misa y la confesión nos coloca en un peligro mortal que es eterno. Si eres menor de 75 años, si no tienes otras enfermedades como enfermeda-des pulmonares, diabetes, ciertos tipos de cáncer ni has recibido quimioterapia, entonces puede ser el mo-mento de deponer tus temores irrazonables y volver a la misa. No te despreciarán por usar una máscara o por no usar una máscara. Puedes mantener tu distancia de los demás, pero por favor no te alejes de la mi-sericordia de Dios. Ven a misa. Si hay familiares o amigos que se han estado quedando alejados porque tenían miedo, es posible que desees compartir esto con ellos. Todos tenemos un deber en la salvación de las almas. Se nos dio esa responsabilidad cuando fuimos bautizados y confirmados. No debemos dejar que el miedo irrazonable nos mantenga alejados de él.

Maintenance Fund Update

Thanks to your generous support to our Maintenance Fund, we were able to write the final check for the chiller. Thanks to your faithful giving, we did not have to borrow any money from the diocese. The total chiller cost was $182,000!

Our next big maintenance challenge we are facing is replacing a section of the school roof, which is projected to cost $65,000. Thank you for continuing to contribute to the Maintenance Fund.
