Prayer of the Day: Presider: Let us pray.

Silence is kept

that love fulfils the law.

May we love you with all our heart,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD OF GOD We read and respond to God’s message in Scripture

First Reading: Genesis 22:1-14

After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him,

"Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." He said, "Take your son,

your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah,

and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains

that I shall show you." So Abraham rose early in the morning,

saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him,

and his son Isaac; he cut the wood for the burnt offering, and set

out and went to the place in the distance that God had shown him.

On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away.

Then Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey;

4

the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we

will come back to you." Abraham took the wood of the burnt

offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire

and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. Isaac said to

his father Abraham, "Father!" And he said, "Here I am, my son."

He said, "The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb

for a burnt offering?" Abraham said, "God himself will provide

the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So the two of them walked

on together. When they came to the place that God had shown

him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He

bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his

son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said,

"Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." He said, "Do not

lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know

that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your

only son, from me." And Abraham looked up and saw a ram,

caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram

and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So

Abraham called that place "The Lord will provide"; as it is said to

this day, "On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided."

Reader: The word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 13:

How long, O Lord? will you forget me for ever? how long will

you hide your face from me?

How long shall I have perplexity in my mind, and grief in my

heart, day after day? how long shall my enemy triumph over

me?

Page 5: June 28, 2020 10am Fourth Sunday after Pentecost...Presider: Let us pray. Silence is kept Almighty God, you have taught us through your Son that love fulfils the law. May we love you

5

Look upon me and answer me, O Lord my God; give light to my

eyes, lest I sleep in death;

Lest my enemy say, "I have prevailed over him," and my foes

rejoice that I have fallen.

But I put my trust in your mercy; my heart is joyful because of

your saving help.

I will sing to the Lord, for he has dealt with me richly; I will

praise the name of the Lord Most High

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it

was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Hymn: Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life

Tune: Fulda

Where cross the crowded ways of life,

Where cries of tribe and race resound,

Amid the noise of selfish strife,

O Christ, your word of love is found.

In haunts of wretchedness and need,

On shadowed thresholds, dark with fears,

From paths where hide the lures of greed,

We catch the vision of your tears.

The cup of water given for you

Still holds the freshness of your grace;

Yet long the multitudes to view

The strong compassion of your face.

6

O Jesus, from the mountainside,

Make haste to heal these hearts of pain;

Among these restless throngs abide;

O tread the city's streets again;

Till all the world shall learn your love,

And follow where your feet have trod;

Till glorious from your heaven above

Shall come the city of our God.

~The Reverend Dr. Frank M. North (1850-1935)

The Gospel: Matthew 10:40-42

Gospeller: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,

according to Matthew.

People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

Gospeller: Jesus said, "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and

whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever

welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a

prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in

the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the

righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of

these little ones in the name of a disciple - truly I tell you, none of

these will lose their reward."

Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ. People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

Sermon: The Reverend Brian Suggs

Affirmation of Faith:

Presider: I invite those who would like to make a profession of

Christian faith to join with me in the Apostles’ Creed.

People: I believe in God,

the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again

to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Presider: Having reaffirmed our faith, let us prepare to offer our

prayers to God.

Prayers of the People: For the Church, those in authority, the world, our community,

the sick and those in need, for the departed,

and for the forgiveness of our sins.

Confession and Absolution:

Presider: While we were still sinners,

Christ died for us.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit,

God promises to heal and forgive us.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God.

cf Romans 5:8

Presider: God our Father,

People: long-suffering, full of grace and truth,

you create us from nothing and give us life.

You give your faithful people new life

in the water of baptism.

You do not turn your face from us,

nor cast us aside.

We confess that we have sinned

against you and our neighbour.

We have wounded your love

and marred your image in us.

Restore us for the sake of your Son,

and bring us to heavenly joy,

in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Presider: Almighty God have mercy upon you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and keep you in eternal life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

People: Amen.

The Peace: Having prayed for God’s grace and peace for us and the world,

we offer an exchange of peace with one another.

As you are comfortable, you may use the live chat to say, “Peace be with you”

to those participating online.

Presider: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you.

Hymn: The God of Abraham Praise

Tune: Leoni

The God of Abraham praise,

Who reigns enthroned above;

Ancient of Everlasting Days,

And God of Love;

Jehovah, great I AM!

By earth and heaven confessed;

I bow and bless the sacred name

Forever blest.

The great I AM has sworn;

I on this oath depend.

I shall, on eagle wings up-borne,

To heaven ascend.

I shall behold God's face;

I shall God's power adore,

Page 10: June 28, 2020 10am Fourth Sunday after Pentecost...Presider: Let us pray. Silence is kept Almighty God, you have taught us through your Son that love fulfils the law. May we love you

10

And sing the wonders of God's grace

Forevermore.

The goodly land I see,

With peace and plenty blest;

A land of sacred liberty,

And endless rest.

There milk and honey flow,

And oil and wine abound,

And trees of life forever grow

With mercy crowned.

Triumphant hosts on high

Give thanks eternally

And “Holy, holy, holy” cry,

“Great Trinity!”

Hail Abraham's God and ours!

One mighty hymn we raise,

All power and majesty be yours

And endless praise!

~The Yigdal of Daniel ben Judah (fl.c. 1400)

para. Thomas Olivers (1725-1799)

The Lord’s Prayer:

Presider: As our Saviour taught us, let us pray:

11

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial,

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours,

now and for ever. Amen.

Doxology:

Presider: Glory to God

than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from
