MBOMBELA GOLF CLUB MONTHLY NEWSLETTER JUNE 2021 1 (013) 744-0952 This is our members’ newsletter, so let us know some interesting facts, laughs, contentious issues or whatever. JUNE 2021 Wow, we have just moved into the last month of this financial year and can only appreciate what we have achieved to date. Last year at this time we were closed due to the global Covid-19 pandemic and were really in the unknown, with regards to our future as a club and the economic environment we would find ourselves in. We have manged to get ourselves through the pandemic and can proudly say that we are financially stable and in the position to do some exciting upgrades to the course. The first will be an extensive tee-levelling and upgrade project, which we believe will totally transform and improve our golfing experience. This project is well overdue and will cause some interruption in play, however we will be in a position to keep playing during this process apart from the first two days and know that the outcome will be well received by the members and guests. Following extensive communication and research with industry leaders the following program was approved and resolved by the management committee, and we ask if members and corporates would like to assist and sponsor towards this exciting project, to please look out for the project mailer that will be distributed out: 1. Current Club and Senior Tees will be sprayed with Fusillade Forte 12 th & 13 th July In order to kill off all grass on these playing areas 2. Sod Cutting and removal of grass on the tee box complex 26 th & 27 th July (at this stage we will move all play to the red course layout - old ladies tees) 3. Multi-drain contractors to arrive and will carry out a Rota-diiron and 2 nd 5 th August Lazer box levelling of the teeing areas (Course will be closed Mon 2 + Tues 3 Aug) 4. Sprig laying of Princess 77 Bermuda Grass and Seeding of Yukon Cynodon 5. Crop Covering and Germination of Seed 7-14 days 6. First Cut and Top dress +- 4 weeks 7. First play 6-8 weeks 8. Return to carry out same above process on the red course old ladies tees November As mentioned earlier we are in the final month of the financial year and therefore subscriptions will become due in the coming months. A dedicated mailer was distributed to the members on Wednesday via e-mail and invoices have been sent out by Cindy. Please look out for these mails – check your spam/junk mails as well – as there is again free rounds available for the early bird payers. As mentioned in this communication, through the members support and dedication we have been able to take the club to where it is today, and for this we are truly grateful. On that point, I want to thank all the members and corporates who played, sponsored and contributed to the 53 rd playing of the Jock of the Bushveld tournament. It was another enjoyable and financially viable tournament and our appreciation and thanks go out to the Jock Committee who put this all together. In closing, I wish to update the members in regards to the Pro-Shop matter. Following various correspondence between the parties, which members have been previously updated on, the matter has now been set-down for the 12 th of August. As in prior communication, should any member wish to discuss the matter or get further clarity, please contact me or a management committee member. I eagerly look forward to the busy time ahead and hope to see you all on the course using one of your free rounds. Cheers for now, happy golfing and keep it on the fairways

JUNE 2021

Wow, we have just moved into the last month of this financial year and can only appreciate what we have achieved to date.

Following extensive communication and research with industry leaders the following program was approved and resolved by the management committee, and we ask if members and corporates would like to assist and sponsor towards this exciting project, to please look out for the project mailer that will be distributed out:

1. Current Club and Senior Tees will be sprayed with Fusillade Forte 12th & 13th July

In order to kill off all grass on these playing areas

2. Sod Cutting and removal of grass on the tee box complex 26th & 27th July

4. Sprig laying of Princess 77 Bermuda Grass and Seeding of Yukon Cynodon

5. Crop Covering and Germination of Seed 7-14 days

6. First Cut and Top dress +- 4 weeks

7. First play 6-8 weeks

8. Return to carry out same above process on the red course – old ladies tees November

Club, Course and Grounds

The recent hail storm was well received although it did cause some damage on and around the course. While very rare to encounter at this time of the year, I do believe the added nitrogen and rainfall will assist us greatly with the grass coverage into the later part of the winter months.

Members and Guests are reminded that all social distancing practices must be adhered to and the wearing of masks in a public area is mandatory. Our Covid-Wise phrase is that of SAFE, SANITISED and SPACED and we encourage all members, staff and visitors to apply these principles especially with the announced 3rd wave.

Members are reminded to download the Club Master and Social Spotlight Apps for their smart devices. These apps give you access to a host of information as well as the capabilities to do bookings, check-ins, account related transactions and various other club related tasks all in the ease of your hand.

Following the success of the Rugby World Cup Fanpark, we will be hosting the FANPARK for the British & Irish Lions tour. The opening game for the Fanpark will be Wednesday 14th of July and the remaining games of the tour will all be televised on the big screen in the Sand Bar area.

Golf News

The Individual and Betterball Knock-outs entry lists are available on the notice board and members are asked to enter their details on the relevant list and are encouraged to partake in these match play tournaments. The draw will take place on Wednesday

The Winter Club Champs entry forms are out and available. This fun and enjoyable event will take place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 July. The Saturday round will include free entry into the British & Irish Lions Rugby Fan Park following your round.

The Winter Champs will be the last time that we play from the white markers until the new tee complexes are opened. As mentioned, we will be moving all golf to the red markers at the start of this project and therefore your red course handicap will be used when playing and must be selected when entering your scores on the HNA system.

The Golf RSA slope and course rating team were out recently rerating the course to confirm that the clubs course difficulty and slope rating are correct. We are still awaiting the results from the re-rating and will advise and update the members as soon as we receive them.

Estate News

NORMAL CHIP FROM A BARE LIE

With the golf course hardening up as we move into the winter months, you might come across a bare lie chip shop. This should not

frighten you, but with making a few simple set up changes and with a sensible club selection the shot can be played confidently.

Step 1- Back Foot Address – Position the ball opposite your right foot and square up the blade. Align slightly left to target and

push your weight on to your left side. Grip lightly

Step 2- Putting Backswing- Play the stroke with a putting action. The backswing is short and controlled, and your wrists must

remain firm. Keep your weight on the left side.

Step 3- Downward Blow- Strike down on the ball firmly, ensuring you hit it before the ground. Make sure you keep your hands

ahead of the ball at impact and don’t break your wrists.

Step 4- Stiff-arm follow through- Because you’re chipping with a long putting action your follow through should be short and

your wrists rigid. Your swing length varies with distance of shot.

The Rule Book

Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair.

But to do what is fair, you need to know the Rules of Golf.

Rule 17.1d Relief for Ball in Penalty Area If a player's ball is in a penalty area, including when it is known or virtually certain to be in a penalty area even though not found,

the player has these relief options, each for one penalty stroke:

(1) Stroke-and-Distance Relief. The player may play the original ball or another ball from where the previous stroke was made

(see Rule 14.6).

(2) Back-On-the-Line Relief. The player may drop the original ball or another ball (see Rule 14.3) in a relief area that is based

on a reference line going straight back from the hole through the estimated point where the original ball last crossed the

edge of the penalty area

• Reference Point: A point on the course chosen by the player that is on the reference line and is farther from the hole than

the estimated point (with no limit on how far back on the line):

o In choosing this reference point, the player should indicate the point by using an object (such as a tee).

o If the player drops the ball without having chosen this point, the reference point is treated as being the point on the

line that is the same distance from the hole as where the dropped ball first touched the ground.

• Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: One club-length, but with these limits:

• Limits on Location of Relief Area:

o Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and

o May be in any area of the course except the same penalty area, but

o If more than one area of the course is located within one club-length of the reference point, the ball must come to

rest in the relief area in the same area of the course that the ball first touched when dropped in the relief area.
