Racecourses combine with fantastic results for racegoers and communities alike

I had considered going with Racecourses Assemble, but it felt a little too close to an Avengers title for comfort. The point stands, though, that the past month has seen racecourses combine across Britain to promote community engagement, invisible disability awareness and of course our wonderful sport of horseracing.

Let’s start with the latter—there is so much happening at this time of year that it is hard to not be delighted as a racing fan. From trials across the nation leading to the Classics and Group Ones of the summer, all flat racecourses (and some jump!) will have a connection to the big races. Equally, it’s great to see so many racecourses bring the crown jewel events to a local audience. For example, Hexham’s Derby Day raceday has become an event in its own right, bringing all the excitement and glamour from the Investec Derby to a packed crowd in Northumberland.

The Racing Together Community Day, which has long been championed in Update, was a fantastic event that saw over 30 racecourses provide 120 staff, who in turn helped contribute to the sport’s total of 1,500 hours donated. The range of events was as diverse

as the racecourse teams to take part, a fact that was not lost on a political level when Racing Together and the Community Day was namechecked in a Parliamentary session by Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright. You can read more about the day later in the edition, and both the Racing Together and RCA teams are hopeful that the initiatives act as the catalysts for long-lasting, meaningful community engagement relationships.

A further article in this month’s edition looks at the green wave sweeping across the sport, ably led by Debbie Matthews. Debbie’s #GoRacingGreen campaign to promote positive mental health has captured the hearts of many within the sport and has transcended the racing media in a way that would be the envy of many. A number of racecourses are signatories with more soon to follow—our latest On Track runs over the ground covered to date.

Elsewhere, the Racegoers Club detail their roadtrip to collaborate with Wincanton Racecourse at the Royal Bath & West Show, we give you the chance to join us and a host of racecourses at July’s Raceday Experience Forum and all the latest news from our Technical Group.

DID YOU KNOW...Did you know that the RCA has a comprehensive suite of guidance documents for racecourses surrounding risk assessments for raceday activities, aimed at all those who have a duty to manage risks to safety of participants at racecourses on a raceday.

These include a document designed to assist racecourses in confirming their own risk assessments by providing detailed information regarding the potential risks which should be considered and any regulations surrounding these. This is complemented by specialist documents, examining medical risk

assessments and veterinary risk assessments.

The suite of documents is completed by our Parade Ring Safety Guidance Note and Risk Assessment, which was recently relaunched as part of the Industry Wide ‘Be Horse Aware’ campaign.

The dates and locations for forthcoming Racecourse Groundstaff Courses have been finalised as follows:

SUN AND FUN AT THE ROYAL BATH & WEST SHOWWords by Matt Jones

The Racegoers Club recently teamed up with Wincanton Racecourse at the Royal Bath & West Show, England’s biggest gala of rural life and only four-day Royal show. The show is a celebration of agriculture, entertainment, food & drink and it provided the perfect opportunity to spread the word about Racegoers Club and to promote the sport of horseracing to people of all ages.

Show goers had the opportunity to try their hand at being a jockey on the equicisor challenge and were given the chance to experience the style and glamour of the Investec Derby Festival with the ‘day at the races dress up zone’. Across the four days hundreds of people including children, aspiring jockeys, police officers and paramedics caught the racing buzz as they took on a virtual lap of Wincanton Racecourse. Some were even lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Grade 1 winning jockey Bryony Frost in action as she popped by our pitch and gave a demonstration of professional jockey technique.

Club Executive Sophie Hellyer commented “It was fantastic to spend four fun-filled days at the Royal Bath & West Show. Not only did we get to promote the Racegoers Club and the benefits of membership to hundreds of people, but we also got them aware of their local racecourse and talking about horseracing. I’d like to thank the team from Wincanton Racecourse for inviting us to exhibit with them, and I know the team and I are looking forward to the 2020 edition of the show.”

If you’d like to find out more about the Racegoers Club then visit the Club website at www.racegoersclub.co.uk.

BRITISH RACECOURSES GO GREEN TO SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTHAwareness of mental health issues can no longer be swept under the carpet. Even if the colour of the carpet is changed, as Nottingham racecourse general manager James Knox discovered earlier this year.

Nottingham is the first racecourse in Britain to have set aside a room to provide a quiet and safe environment for anyone of any age with an invisible illness or disability.

The move is part of the #GoRacingGreen initiative, which supports those with a range of conditions that include, but are not exclusive to, dementia, autism, ADHD and general anxiety disorder, and was pioneered by Debbie Matthews, who blogs under the name Novice Filly.

Explaining the background to the project, Knox says: “I’d always had the idea that I wanted our staff to be trained on hidden disabilities and be more awasore of their implications, but we’re not experts in this field and don’t pretend to be, so before we started on the room I contacted Debbie.

“She visited the site for a course walk to identify an area that would be suitable for use as a #GoRacingGreen room, and we picked a place at one end of the Paddock Bar, which is quite close to the main entrance, accessible to the parade ring, track and food, drink and toilet facilities but at the same time sufficiently far away from track that it can be a closed area.

“But it soon became obvious there were other things we had to change.

“For instance, at the main entrance we had large black welcome mats, which to someone with dementia could be regarded as a hole, which they could be fearful of stepping across. Inside, the room we identified was painted white but that was too bright, and there were mirrors, which are not useful for people with dementia. It was the same in the disabled toilet facility, where a white bowl and a white seat don’t work for someone who has a form of dementia.

“We wouldn’t have known about any of these issues without Debbie’s input. She had attended our staff training session in March, speaking initially about hidden disabilities but then relating her own experiences and issues she faced around mental health, how the horse had helped her through some difficult times and what the #GoRacingGreen initiative was about.

“That was when I realised this was what I wanted to do. She inspired me 100 per cent. Anyone who has met her cannot fail to be inspired, and she deserves all the credit, after launching this as a venture which started with one Tweet about her love of the steeplechaser Altior and how she was going to Ascot to see him run. It’s snowballed from there into a movement in its own right.”

Following Debbie Matthews’ site visit, Nottingham’s maintenance staff got to work. They put astroturf over the welcome mats to resemble grass, which would not be seen as dangerous, and the toilet was decked out in contrasting colours. The dedicated room itself was painted green, branded with the #GoRacingGreen logo, and equipped with green-topped tables and tomato-red-backed chairs.

However, that was not the end of her contribution, as James Knox explains: “Debbie also writes comprehensive access statements, which we put on our website, so that anyone with a hidden disability can plan their journey to and around the racecourse.

“Someone with anxiety issues might not know what to expect when they go from their house to the course and when they’re on the course. If we can take them on the journey before they get here, to know what to expect when they do get here, that’s going to make it easier for them to take the step to come to us in the first place.

“Links on our website are the start of the process of communication, but we’ll be working on getting the message across more widely. Debbie has a lot of contacts in this field and will be disseminating the information to all interested parties. She’s almost starting a community and the hope is that information will be passed on to others, although we know it’s going to take it time to get established and encourage people with hidden disabilities to give the sport of horseracing a try.”

As well as Knox, other key staff, including operations executive Paul Hanson, regional business development

executive Chris Eason and sales and marketing co-ordinator Connor Ball, have become Dementia Friends, and members of the team have attended an Autism Awareness seminar.

The #GoRacingGreen room is open on 19 racedays, with a trained member of staff on duty, offering a friendly face and advice, and whose reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.

Pam Addleton, a member of the casual raceday office staff, says: “Anything we can do like this is a great way forward in every aspect of life. As you get older, you become more aware of other people’s needs, and providing somewhere quiet and safe is a lovely idea.”

Froot Atkins, whose husband Mick is the racecourse photographer and son Matthew, 19, who has Asperger syndrome and works on racedays during holidays from his studies at university in Scotland, adds: “It’s an outstanding idea, and an ideal space for people who might not show external signs of a problem.

“Matthew loves racing but he has often said on some courses he just needs to get away from the crowds for a while, and he’s gone to the family room or the medical room, but they’re not ideal.

“Our #GoRacingGreen room will take time to get established, because as it’s at the end of the Paddock Bar some people walk in expecting to get a drink, but we can explain what it’s all about before we point them in the direction of the nearest bar. Things will evolve from the feedback we get. It’s just typical of Nottingham; there’s a lot of kindness here.”

The future for #GoRacingGreen is certainly looking bright. In the past week, Debbie has announced that all three Jockey Club North West Racecourses (Aintree, Carlisle and Haydock Park) and Chester and Bangor-on-Dee Racecourses will join the fold, offering racegoers with invisible disabilities countless more opportunities to enjoy a day's racing. In addition, a #GoRacingGreen meet and greet is scheduled at Salisbury Racecourse on Wednesday 26th June. The RCA has worked alongside #GoRacingGreen and industry partners Racing Welfare and Racing Together to develop guidance for racecourses to welcome those with invisible disabilities, ensuring the sport remains open and accessible to all.

GOOD CAUSES ON TO A WINNER WITH CHARITY RACENIGHT TAKEOVERBeverley Racecourse has announced it is staging a charity takeover race meeting to support the fantastic work of some of the region’s most worthy causes.

Five local charities– Cash for Kids, the Daisy Appeal, Dove House Hospice, Hull Homeless Community Project and R-evolution – have been invited to take centre stage at The Great Big Beverley Charity Racenight on Tuesday, June 18.

The pioneering race meeting was revealed on Racing Together Community Day, which showcased

British racing’s extensive work supporting the community and good causes outside the industry.

Although Beverley Racecourse has supported many charitable causes in the past, it will be the first time it has organised a dedicated, charity-focused race meeting, with each organisation given a range of benefits to help them raise funds and awareness on the night.

The free assets include 100 Premier Tickets, worth £2,000, to sell and give away for the event; a race named after each charity on the night; the chance to

go into the Parade Ring to choose the best turned out horse with their guests and present the trophy afterwards; a half page advert in the racecard; and banner space at the final furlong, Paddock Bar or Parade Ring.

They have also been given stand space to carry out fundraising activities, digital profile via social media and the racecourse website, and charity prizes for corporate hospitality guests, which they can add a percentage to and re-sell, raising additional funds.

Beverley Racecourse will work with five charities and some local legends to help raise funds across East Yorkshire

Kate McKee, Marketing Manager at Beverley Racecourse, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome all five charities to the first of our three evening meetings of the 2019 season.

“This will be our first race meeting supporting multiple charities, all of which do amazing work in the region.

“Rather than focus on a single charity we’ve decided to support five very worthy causes. We’ve also decided to go all out by effectively devoting the evening to them – it really is their night!

“The assets and opportunities we are making available to the charities are worth thousands of pounds will enable them to turn that into vital funds, while also raising awareness of their good work.

“We hope as many people as possible will join us on the night and support these great causes.” Marketing Manager Kate McKee with the refugee project cycle handover team

Hull Homeless Community Project is just one of the charities who will benefit from this fantastic event

Since its inception in 2016, Racing Staff Week has grown unrecognisably in its reach and impact. All courses racing in the period 29th June – 6th July have been contacted to ask them to participate in the celebrations and Racing Welfare is hugely appreciative of the measures put in place to mark the week. As in previous years, the charity will supply racecard and CCTV adverts to inform the public about the campaign. Last year 22 race titles were given over to bear reference to Racing Staff Week, a request that has been made again for this year. The week’s flagship film, which will take on a new look this time around, aims to capture the essence of everyone working in racing. The film will be supplied to RaceTech.

With 3.4million views of #RacingStaffWeek last year, the campaign provides a fantastic platform for exposure and positive PR. Racing Welfare is keen to highlight the great work being done by racecourses all year round and so would like to hear of any announcements of future development

plans, or the reiteration of ongoing initiatives currently in place.

Past rewards for visiting racing staff have included a whole range of goodies and the charity asks that all courses racing during the week again inform of plans for this year. Further to this, Racing Welfare would love to hear of any events being laid on by racecourses for their own teams.

The charity’s social media content generated a reach of over 804,300 last year, presenting a fantastic opportunity to highlight the contribution of your own people to a highly engaged audience.

To log your plans for Racing Staff Week 2019, please contact Jess Leighton or Hannah Walker.

For social media, online content or any other queries, contact Felicity Marshall.

GOING GLOBAL

The British flat racing season kicked into top gear in May. It was an especially fruitful month for Britain’s owner-breeders, and for none more so than Meon Valley Stud’s Mark Weinfeld, whose progressive colt Telecaster (GB) landed the feature race of the Dante festival at York and whose top-class filly claimed classic glory when winning the Gr.1 Investec Oaks.

Preceding this earlier in the month, Sir Michael Stoute’s six-year-old gelding Mustashry (GB) landed his first Gr.1 when winning the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury for owner-breeder Shadwell Stud.

In addition to social media coverage of the successes, press releases and adverts were sent and placed after both Gr.1 wins highlighting the success of British-breds.

Promotion of British-bred success

Stud Visits

In the run up to the Derby festival GBRI visited Nurlan Bizakov’s Hesmonds Stud. As owner-breeder of both Tauteke (GB), who ran in the Investec Oaks, and Gr.3 Musidora winner Nausha (GB), it was a timely visit to hear from Stud Manager Tony Fry on how the stud has progressed over the last few years.

Following the visit GBRI created a video feature, the video was posted on our social media channels and can also be viewed on our vimeo channel – https://vimeo.com/gbinternational.

General

GBRI was present at the Goffs UK Spring Sale, producing coverage of the sale via social media platforms.

GBRI will continue to support both British auction companies throughout 2019 with social media coverage of each sale with the aim to further promote the quality of bloodstock on offer at British auctions.

Racing to School is delighted to have been awarded third place by the Sports Business Awards in the Best Non-Match (or Game) day use of a Venue category.

The award was in recognition of the charity’s work with Aintree Racecourse, as part of the successful Aintree Beacon Programme, which aims to provide pupils local to Aintree with long-term engagement with racing.

In a category that included BT Sport, The KIA Oval, Twickenham Stadium

(silver medal) and overall winners, Emirates Old Trafford, we were awarded the bronze medal by the judges, which highlights the great work being achieved with the support of Aintree racecourse and our partner schools – this also acts as an important endorsement of the Programme.

We should also like to thank our funder, The Racing Foundation, for believing in and investing long-term in the Programme.

TABLEY POINT-TO-POINT HOSTS RACING TO SCHOOL RIDERS’ PROGRAMME

In March 2018, Racing to School was pleased to stage its first Point-to-Point activity day, when we visited the Flint & Denbigh Hunt meeting at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse with a great group of young Pony Club members.

The event was a hit and, on Sunday 19th May, we were delighted to be invited

to Knutsford Races at Tabley House, to give a second group of Pony Club members the chance to experience the enthusiasm and fun of a day of Pointing.

As last year, the event proved hugely successful and we look forward to running more Point-to-Point events in the future.

Charity’s Aintree Beacon Programme gains recognition at Sports Business Awards

A busy Spring saw the team deliver a monthly record in May of 50 events that engaged 1,779 young people.

Over the past three years, it has been the charity’s strategy to grow our participation from a base of 10,000 in 2015 to our target this year to work with 14,750 young people. Last month’s record total would not have been possible but for the support of our funders and other partners, in particular racecourses, which enable us to bring young people to the heart of the sport through our activity days.

What next?We are already planning for next year to be even bigger and better for those people and organisations that are supported by racing’s combined efforts.

In the meantime, Racing Together will continue to support racecourses with their community engagement plans, on an individual level and through our quarterly industry Action Group meetings. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the website where we share inspiring and informative examples of community engagement in action from inside and outside the sport. Please share your community and charity news and community events with us so that we can showcase your activity: email [email protected]

During DCMS Oral Questions in the House of Commons on 25th May Racing Together Community Day was mentioned by Laurence Robertson MP

in the context of racing’s significant contribution to society. John Blake from Racing to School

and Laurence Robertson MP were interviewed for ITV Racing on Racing Together Community Day at Chester Racecourse.

What a day!The numbers are in and Racing Together Community Day was officially the best yet.

A big thank you to everyone across racing and the racecourse teams that volunteered their time in support of the day. All of the individual projects nationwide had a big impact on a variety of beneficiaries. Together 250 people gave over 1,500 hours to help others, from 60 racing businesses. REVIEW OF ACTIVITY PUBLISHED FOR 2018

The Racing Foundation is delighted to publish a Review of our activity for 2018, which shows the progress we are making in delivering against the expectations of our 2018-2020 strategy.

In particular, the Review highlights that:

• 35 grants totalling over £6million were awarded during 2018, with a focus on the industry’s people agenda (91% of grants).

• April 2018 witnessed the milestone of having awarded £10million, since inception, spread over 159 grants, which reached a significant number of beneficiaries. These included 23,000 people benefiting from education and training activities; 15,000 racing staff given support through health and wellbeing grants; 13 equine science research grants and a number of equine welfare initiatives with the potential of benefitting the entire Thoroughbred population, at all life stages.

• A landmark partnership was secured with Racing Welfare, to provide £3.9m of funding for the charity’s key wellbeing services over the next three years (including

occupational health, careers advice and training and mental health services).

• In an attempt to attract and recruit more staff into the industry, a number of Racing Foundation funded training and education activities now focus on diversity and inclusion in racing.

• Past grant awards continue to record great progress, including HEROS Racing Staff Academy, the Thoroughbred Horseracing Industries MBA programme and the Pony Racing Academies delivered nationally through a collaboration between the NRC, BRS and PRA.

To make a positive start in delivering against the expectations of our stakeholders through the first year of our new strategy, we are operating more strategically; have a more targeted focus; are more closely aligned with a number of racing charities and are speeding up funds flowing into the industry.

A pdf of the 2018 Review is available on our website: www.racingfoundation.co.uk/about-us/downloads or to receive a hard copy please email [email protected].

The 2019 Charles Owen Racecourse Series started at Aintree in May with a very tight finish in the 148 cm race resulting in a dead heat! (Watch the replay on our website. The season continued at Huntingdon and Fakenham and now continues throughout the summer with 21 more fixtures before the Finals at Cheltenham on Sunday 17th November. We are so grateful to all Racecourses who support us, along with our sponsors and the officials who help make the races ‘feel like the real thing’.

The 2019 Point-to-Point pony racing season draws to a close on 15th June. Over 70 fixtures have been staged and again we are so grateful to all of these for supporting our jockeys of the future.

Our list of alumni is ever growing and I am delighted to see so many of our graduates working in the industry and making their mark so early in their careers. 7 of the last 10 Conditional Champion Jockeys started in pony racing; 2 of the last 5 Champion

Apprentice Jockeys cut their teeth on the pony racing circuit.

In 2018 the PRA ran a number of schemes for children who do not own their own pony. These have been generously funded by the Racing Foundation and the BHA under their Recruitment, Training and Retention Programme. Since these schemes began in 2013, nearly 100 children have had the chance to pony race with over 30% of these children now working in yards full or part time.

On the basis of provisional submissions to date from most Levy-paying bookmakers, estimated Levy income for the year ended 31st March 2019 will be some £78m.

This figure is materially below expectations. It compares to yield of some £95m in 2017/18, the first year in which the reach of the Levy had extended to bookmakers beyond Great Britain.

Following the third quarter of 2018/19, to 31st December 2018, in the light of information provided voluntarily by major bookmakers to HBLB on actual performance to date, the Board envisaged that full-year income would be up to £89m.

However, the end of year submissions from bookmakers show that yield will fall well short of that level. Informal reports provided to the Board by bookmakers, and analysis conducted by HBLB, reflect that February and March 2019, the last two months of the Levy year, were very substantially less profitable than in 2018.

The Board is continuing to carry out its formal end of year processes with bookmakers and undertaking its own further review.

On the assumption that £78m is the final yield, the Board will have incurred a budget deficit on expenditure of some £5m in 2018/19, causing the Board’s

reserves to stand at around £40m, the Board having expected them to be at around £50m.

With an agreed expenditure budget of around £99m for 2019, the Board decided this week that some reduction is necessary. Plans will be formulated in the coming weeks to cut grant expenditure by £5m during calendar year 2019 and there is the probability of a further reduction to take effect before the end of the 2019/20 Levy year.

The Board will keep the position under regular review. In the autumn, after it considers reports on the year to date, market information and forecasts for the rest of the year, it will decide on the scale of further expenditure reductions.

Levy Board Chairman Paul Lee said: “Bookmaker profits in the fourth quarter, particularly in February and March, were reported to be very substantially down on estimates. This has led to a material undershooting of Levy income against forecast, even taking into account that yield was not expected to reach the £95m of 2017/18.

“This is only the second year of the extended Levy and the inherent uncertainty was recognised by the Board in 2017, which led to its policy of increasing reserves significantly over the past two years. The purpose of having these reserves is to be able

to shield Racing against substantial fluctuation. However, the scale of the fall in income means that there is a strong probability of having to make further adjustments to expenditure during the Levy year in addition to the £5m reduction before the end of 2019.

“The variation in yield from £95m to £78m in the first two years of the extended Levy makes forecasting 2019/20 income more difficult and will create a challenge in setting a full-year expenditure budget for calendar year 2020 before the end of calendar year 2019.

“The Board will look to put in place additional reporting arrangements with major bookmakers, who are already helpfully providing significant data to the Board on a voluntary basis.”

EXPECTED LEVY YIELD FOR 2018/19 SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN FORECAST

As we approach the half way point of 2019, our teams at RaceTech have covered over 600 race meetings with outside broadcast, integrity and additional technical services. The past six months has seen RaceTech’s newly expanded teams successfully integrate and embrace new schedules and take in new locations as we strive to provide the most efficient service with developing technology in order to enhance the racing product.

As part of our expanding OB fleet, we launched our most recent acquisition OBX, in May. The new 10 metre single expander unit is built on a Volvo chassis with air suspension and becomes our flagship truck. OBX will typically be used for the larger meetings and festivals around the country, it has an impressive technical portfolio capable of catering for a multitude of requirements at large broadcast events.

John Bozza RaceTech CEO commented, “I am proud to welcome

OBX into our existing fleet of high spec broadcast units and congratulate our design and project management teams on completing a period of significant expansion for RaceTech. OBX is the fourth new build to come into operation since the start of the year. I look forward to seeing it at work supporting our customers and racecourse stakeholders and am excited by the additional service capabilities it can provide.”

The Investec Derby at Epsom is one of the highlights of the year for all the RaceTech teams and this year was no exception with coverage shown by 30 broadcasters around the globe. Our starting stalls team were particularly in the spotlight but took it all their stride, even finding time for TV interviews about the delicacies of their highly skilled occupation!

As we move into summer and hopefully some great weather, the colourful racing festivals and events see the

racecourses really come alive. It is a perfect time to make sure those large happy crowds and busy racecourse facilities are recorded for future use. One of our aims on-course, is to capture as much of the colour and atmosphere as possible to be used live or recorded by our broadcast partners and racecourses. This, in turn promotes the courses and the amazing spectacle that is racing. We are providing more colour clips for racecourses to use live or recorded on their RCTV, or for social media feeds and promotional pieces. It can be useful for future use to customers or to attract new commercial partners. If you would like to know more about how we can enhance your output, please do contact us to discuss.

And finally, our newly designed website www.racetech.co.uk is now live, and will be regularly updated. We hope you will find it informative and useful.

As reported in previous editions of Update, the implementation of the new Ownership Quality Mark is progressing well across Racecourses. The AA, who are conducting the assessments on our behalf will have completed all 60 Racecourse visits by the end of August.

The Ownership Quality Mark and the ROA Gold Standard Awards will run in parallel, and the reports compiled by The AA form a vital part of the Gold Standard judging process.

The Ownership Quality Mark assesses the quality of the key elements of the raceday experience for Owners, and the delivery of them. The Gold

Standard assessment process will expect excellence in these areas, and will also reward where Racecourses “surprise and delight” and go above and beyond what Owners would expect. The ROA Raceday Committee will be completing their assessment visits by early October.

As well as these two key reports which will assist the Raceday Committee in deciding the 2019 ROA Gold Standards, the other vital source of feedback and review that we rely on is the feedback from Owners. We encourage Owners with a runner on the day to complete feedback forms via the ROA website: link here.

The number of feedback forms received from Owners has increased year on year, and this has been very encouraging. We receive vital insights into the ownership experience via this route, from “the horse’s mouth”, and in turn this also allows us to identify trends around the Owners’ Experience so that we can work with Racecourses to address any queries or issues.

Please let us know if you have any queries concerning the feedback that you receive from Owners.

A series of two-year-old races for horses with staying pedigrees has recently been given a financial boost. Matchbook Betting Exchange have teamed up with the British EBF to match their prize money contribution and put in place a £100,000 bonus for any winner from the series who goes on to win a Gr.1 race over 10 furlongs or more in the UK and Ireland in their three-year-old year.

The Matchbook EBF Future Stayers’ Series consists of 16 races, all with an increased minimum prize value of £14,000, are open to the progeny of stallions and mares that had won over distances of 10 furlongs or more. The

series begins at Yarmouth on August 7 and runs through to Chelmsford on December 13. Each of the races, to be run over at least 7f, will be worth a minimum of £14,000 and the series has a total value of £283,000.

Philip Mitchell, Chairman of the EBF said:“The bonus is eminently winnable – if it had been in place in the 2016 season for example, Cracksman would have been the first recipient. He won an EBF sire/dam restricted race at Newmarket towards the end of the 2016 season and then went on to win the Champions’ Stakes (Gr.1) at Ascot over 1m2f at the end of his three-year-old career.”

Matchbook CEO Mark Brosnan said: “Matchbook are extremely passionate about the future of horse racing and we want our sponsorships to make a difference, whilst also providing exposure for our brand. We are incredibly excited to partner with the EBF on this innovative initiative, which we believe supports the grassroots of the sport. Horses like Stradivarius and Dee Ex Bee exemplify how this series provides an insight into the staying stars of the future.”

This month Careers in Racing have teamed up with various partners including Royal Windsor Racecourse, BHA Jockey Coach Nick Bentley and several Volunteer Career Makers.

Careers in Racing supported Royal Windsor Racecourse by attending the Royal Windsor Horse Show together for 5 days along with representatives from the British Racing School, The National Stud and Volunteer Career Makers.

The team spent time engaging with the crowds, showcasing the different career opportunities within the racing industry.

A special mention to Dan and Clare Kubler from Kubler Racing who represented Careers in Racing at the event under the new Volunteer Career Maker programme.

The Family Fun Day at Royal Windsor Racecourse was next up for the team. The bank holiday event included BHA Jockey Coach Nick Bentley in attendance providing expert tuition on the horse equicisor to the interested public.

Again we had Volunteer Career Makers on site to give a helping hand. We worked closely with the Royal Windsor Racecourse team who were collecting for the charity, Thames Hospice, and were able to raise an impressive £220 on the day, just by those who had a go on the equicisor.
