This issue of TEXAS in Bloom is the final issue before the Texas Floral Forum scheduled July 13-15 at South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center. Chair René Johnson and her team have planned an incredible event! They have worked to keep the expense intact with hotel and registration costs incredibly reasonable. In these pages you will find all you need to know to complete your plans!!

Keynote Presenter David Tutera, Floral Personalities Kiana Underwood and Christopher White with hands-on and main stage presence, Jenny Thomasson with a lecture and demonstration to open the Forum and Pete Samek to offer a Glimpse into FTD World Cup 2019, simply said, each will share

their best! The experience offered in lecture & demonstration, in the two hands-on classes, to have Time with Tutera and immerse yourself in three Main Stage presentations will inspire while providing the absolute best in education.

The Product Gallery will showcase the best in products with a Step & Repeat providing each of us the opportunity to have our picture made with David Tutera! We are so grateful to the Texas Floral Education Underwriters for their support! This Gallery, as well as the Texas Floral Endowment Celebration Cruise to see the Kemah Boardwalk Fireworks, Dining with Tutera, and the Awards Luncheon, all provide time to network. I hope you will settle in and read this issue cover to cover!! In fact, I would suggest going back several issues so you really feel that you know the designers and the incredible opportunities that await!

Waste no time!!!• Reserve your hotel room. The Room block is booking fast. It is always best to stay at the host hotel so you are near all the events. • Register for all that you can at tsfa.org. • Call a florist friend and extend an invitation!• If you are a shop owner register your employees. Register each person in a different hands-on design experience so information may be shared once all return to the shop! • If you are not a TSFA member, join now and enjoy the substantial savings on your registration and other classes and events throughout the year. The difference in registration costs will pay for your membership!

A special thank you to the committee chairs and their committees for all you have done and all you will do to make this Forum the event of the year! A very special thank you to our Texas Floral Education Underwriters! Without you and your belief in TSFA’ s mission of cultivating success for our members, we could not offer an event of this stature for the florists of Texas!

Jenny ThomassonReturns to Texas to Open the Texas Floral Forum

Featured here is a modern technique on a spiral hand tied bouquet. Transparency is achieved by the means of a Curly Willow armature strong enough to hold its shape while allowing the flowers to fill the negative space. Strong color showcasing Pantone’s color of the year “Ultraviolet” has quickly grabbed fans and an interesting mix of textures set the stage for something unique.

At almost four feet across, this design provided quite the room decor. The picture illustrates the top view of fresh and permanent botanicals attached to a transparent base of wound Grapevine. The stand on which this is supported is completely handmade using florist wire and Oasis Bind Wire made into an umbrella-like shape with support from the base.

This Companion gardening display was featured during the 2015 AIFD National Symposium Presentation titled “Plants, the Road Less Traveled”. In copper tall vessels, extensions of live Bamboo and copper tubing created a dynamic line while cut pieces of wood were stacked inside and made into stalagmites cascading from the lip. The Bamboo is planted. Copper tubing was also inserted into the soil with wood and moss layered to mimic the natural horizontal pattern of the Bamboo.

Floristry seen from a contemporary viewpoint will emphasize technical opportunities while focusing on form and structure. Flower varieties and potted plants combined as pleasing companions will offer a true answer to the current trend to incorporate growing materials as a viable medium. This mixture of organic and modern style will explore with

inspiration ways to achieve your own modern works of botanical art. Jenny Thomasson is the Design Director & Principal, of Stems Florist in St. Louis, MO. Her studies reflect the designations of AIFD PFCI EMC. Her constant pursuit of education and industry dedication is ever growing and she enjoys pushing the boundaries of American floristry.

There is no escaping social media as much as we may want to sometimes. It is here to stay! If you are not embracing social media as a component of your marketing then you may be missing critical engagement with your customers. This hands-on design experience will review design elements that work best, highlight tips to showcase your style and help you develop a strategy to create a social look across all platforms.

Christopher White, a New York based designer, returns to Texas. His creative stylings, for well known publications, as well as his understanding of the relationship between interior and floral environments brings depth to this experience. His ability to share design information while applying the needed business components will add great value for all who carefully study the detailed elements of this workshop.

In this three hour hands-on design experience, scheduled Friday, July 13th from 3:30pm to 6:30pm, Kiana will demonstrate how she creates designs reminiscent of masterful still life paintings, and truly brings “nature into the vase". This is quite the opportunity to learn from this amazing designer during her Texas debut. This hands-on opportunity, with each and every step thoroughly expressed, will open untold possibilities. The canvas, reflective

of the masters’ greatest work will come alive through her teachings.Kiana Underwood travels internationally presenting workshops and main stage presentations. These global experiences and her longtime interest in this style of design brings an abundance of knowledge and a wealth of understanding. Pages of art history will unfold through all learned in this masterful workshop.

SATU

AY

Fabian Salcedo has been in the floral industry for twelve years. Having

accidentally stumbled across a love for floral design, he knew he had found a

passion to explore. He graduated from the University of Texas with a BA in psychology

in 2005. It was not long after graduation that he attended the Floral Design Institute in Seattle. Once back in Austin, he began his career washing buckets and processing while learning from two great mentors. This mentorship, combined with great talent, led to his Texas Designer of the Year win in 2008. These life experiences provided him the confidence and skills needed to ultimately open F2 Floral Design, an event based floral studio, in the summer of 2014.

Education continued through his membership and participation in Texas State Florists’ Association. His willingness to assist others in design education is seen at the highest levels. Salcedo's distinctive style was shared in 2016 when he presented at the World Trade Center and later that year at the Texas Floral Forum. Today Fabian spends his time in China in product development and at home in Austin in creative development of an expanding business.

AY Stacy Mendenhall - Parsons holds

a bachelor’s degree in Design and Space Planning from The Art Institute of Houston opening an interior design business in 2005. Named CEO of RJS in 2008, she travelled the world, meeting celebrities and attending awards shows to elevate the company brand. Showcasing products at such prestigious

events as the Kentucky Derby, NASCAR races, Playboy Mansion and celebrity parties increased company awareness and opened a new chapter establishing a passion for event design.

In 2009, she studied event planning and explored several possibilities. In 2012, she stepped down as CEO of RJS and procured Lary’s Florist in Friendswood, Texas. Lary’s, a retail business of close to fifty years, provided an opportunity to combine her love for interior design and her new found passion for event design. Lary’s had long offered the absolute best in quality and service through a broad based business focused on four areas of design: floral, gift, event consulting, and home décor. From the time of purchase the goal was to expand the business to the next level. In the early summer of 2018 Lary’s will expand into their new building on Friendswood Drive.

Susan Piland TMFSusan Piland TMF has always had a passion and love for anything growing, budding, and blooming. Even as a child she was caught picking roses out of the neighbor’s yard. Susan attended the Skyline High School Horticulture program and has worked in several florists over the past years. Now, owning a brick and mortar

shop and now having a floral studio gives her the ability to continue her education in the floral industry as well as teaching her craft. Susan has been a member of TSFA for over 30 years and received her TMF in 1986. TSFA has always been a valuable part of her career through the continuing education provided by the Association. She gives back to TSFA by serving on the Education and Communication Committees.

Maria Maxit Maria Maxit is a Texas-based floral and event designer with over thirteen years of experience creating events and weddings. After five years of learning from the best in the industry, Maria founded Maxit Flower Design in 2010. As the CEO, Lead Designer and Creative Director, Maria has continued to grow her portfolio and list

of clients through her timeless and old world aesthetics. Maxit Flower Design offers floral designs for floral-centric events and recently added styling and event design services to her growing business. Maria lives in Houston, Texas with her fiancé and continues to build her business.

Kassie Baker TMFThe floral industry opened doors in 2001 when Kassie Baker was a senior in high school. Her parents had told her to get a “real job”. The first door opened at a local florist in Lampasas where she spent the summer. It was love of flowers at first sight and in an instant she knew that working with flowers was something

that she wanted to do. From 2001-2011 she worked in the industry off and on, and in November 2011 she started working part time at House of Flowers. In September, 2012 new doors opened when her family purchased House of Flowers. Joining TSFA, she received the Texas Master Florist designation in 2013. Her leadership skills were recognized when she chaired the Texas Floral Showcase in Lubbock. Kassie served West Texas New Mexico Florist Association as a member of the Board of Directors and currently serves TSFA as a Retail Director. She loves the opportunities provided to assist designers and the continued education offered through TSFA provided programs.

Sheri Jentsch AIFD TMF Sheri Jentsch AIFD TMF began her floral career 20 years ago as the Owner and Creative Director of Blumen Meisters Flower Market. Today she is the Owner of Sheri J Floral Designs offering freelance floral design. Recognized for her unique design style and innovation in the floral marketplace, she offers an extension of

her authentic creative self. She is a member of the Texas State Florists’ Association and holds the designation Texas Master Florist. She is a member of the TSFA Education Committee and a Contributing Writer for TEXAS in Bloom. She is a Chapel Designer, with membership in this worldwide group of talented event designers. She is a member of the American Institute of Floral Designers. Her work has been featured in numerous publications to include Florists' Review and Texas in Bloom. Her competition wins include the Houston Cup, was the Texas Designer of the Year and placed 2nd at Mid America’s Cup.

Sandy Alford TMFASandy Alford TMFA has owned Bloomstreet Designs, a Floral Event and Interior Design Company located in Wimberley Texas, for 36 years. Totally self taught for the first 27 years of her floral career, she quite unexpectedly discovered Texas State Florists’ Association. Her understanding of the importance of

education and a desire to see if she was "doing it right" immediately led to membership in TSFA and a TMF designation. Receiving TMFA designation led to a lifetime involvement in TSFA. Among her favorite things are participation in and assisting designers during the Texas Floral Expo and Forum and working with the TSFA Education Committee. Her love of teaching and sharing her passion with others is evident. On the other side of her world, is a husband and a big blended family of nine children and eleven grandchildren. When she is not making all things beautiful, she enjoys traveling, or simply hanging out with family at home on the beautiful Blanco River.

Marilyn Schuenemann AIFDIn 2000 wanting to change careers, Marilyn attended the Floral Design Institute in Seattle Washington to become a certified floral designer. Today she owns Moore Design Styles in Cedar Park, Texas. Prior to ownership Marilyn was a freelance designer and floral design instructor at Austin Community College

for seven years. In 2015 she was inducted into the American Institute of Floral Designers receiving the designation AIFD. She specializes in affordable weddings offering the best in wedding florals and design.

Experience Expo Education

Using a double casket saddle, the design is very simple. Starting with the boots as the focal of the design clustered bouquets are draped across the base in remembrance.

Using a Smithers-Oasis mache cross as the base, I used dry birch branches to extend the lines and to exaggerate the shape. This design is all about layering, basing larger flowers first, then accent with delicate selections to complete. I love accenting designs with unexpected elements. I’m a stickler on color and texture. The feathers alone, quite craft like and homemade, when matched to perfection add a heavenly feel to the overall design. It is also important to understand what your client's spiritual background is when creating sympathy designs.

This design is created to be a backdrop of color. Hedge designs can look difficult but they are one of the simplest design styles. I selected a very cool rectangle box from Accent Decor. It fit the rustic cowboy theme I was trying to achieve. Using oasis as the holding mechanism, gladiolus stand tall and proud, accented at the base with gorgeous bi-colored yellow roses. I featured Smithers-Oasis NEW! armature wire wrapping the entire box to create a ribbon effect. Sunflowers were secured upside down with binding wire to give a trend forward effect.

Using a very sturdy easel, I deconstructed two grapevine wreaths, basically pulling them apart in a spiral motion. I then attached them onto the easel in their natural motion, not trying to manipulate the vine too much, as the grapevine has gorgeous lines. Once the focal areas became apparent, I attached small funeral cages with zip ties. I used 10 different colored bunches of wheat bound beautifully with Smithers-Oasis aluminum wire in copper or chocolate. Sunflowers are the chosen flowers for this design, some tailored with petals plucked, some shining bright with full glory.

Jacob McCall took center stage during the Texas Floral Expo last July sharing sympathy styled designs. Here he shares the how to’s and a few details to assist you in creating.

Page 21: JUNE 2018 TEXAS in Bloom - Texas State Florists …Texas in Bloom THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE TEXAS STATE FLORISTS’ ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 170760 | Austin, Texas 78717 | 512.834.0361

his is an article outlining when you should and should not recommend florals for sympathy occasions. I invite you to take a moment and think back to a time when perhaps you overheard your salesperson finishing up a call “Thank you, Ms. Green. I’m sure they will love this design. We will send your selection to the family while they are sitting Shiva.” You look down at the order and think all is

good! $300.00 and a happy customer…but wait…with this order and the decisions made we just helped our customer to insult the recipient!

There are times in sales that we do much more than sell flowers! We educate our customers on traditions as well as cultural and religious differences. We assist them with an expression knowing that flowers speak volumes when words oftentimes cannot. We all know to instruct our customers not to send an easel to the family member’s office. In the information shared are other situations to consider. In today’s world, our customers send flowers to friends and families from different religions and traditions providing untold opportunities. With each opportunity comes responsibility. We must be the expert to assist our customers with these most important decisions. Flowers are most often the perfect way to express love and sympathy. We simply must know when it is perfect and when our idea of perfection might offend. Below is a brief outline to help you guide your customers to correctly express their sentiments.

Protestant Christian ServicesIn the Protestant faith it is common to hold a viewing, referred by some as the visitation, prior to the service. This event is most often held at the funeral home even if the service follows the next day at the church. Most recently, viewings are sometimes held just prior to the actual service. Flowers of any and all colors are welcome unless specifically prohibited by the selected church. Flowers are often sent to the viewing or visitation, the service, or to the family home following the service. In the event that an easel or a design with a small water source is selected the flowers may not be at their best for the service. Your customer will thank you for guiding them through this process. The scheduled visitation and service times relate to what designs will look best depending on when the condolences are best represented. A reminder that the funeral home will ensure that the flowers are transported to the church service and then to the burial is often appreciated.

Today, many families choose cremation and thus recommendations of floral arrangements rather than easel designs are best in that there is most often no gravesite.22 | TEXAS in Bloom | June 2018

Sympathy Flowers Are NOT Always

Appropriate

Roman Catholic ServicesWhile flowers are welcome in many of the same areas noted in protestant traditions, flowers at the service itself vary by the parish and cathedral. Often flowers will not be allowed inside the chapel for the mass, and many items, if allowed in the cathedral, will be in the hallways but not permitted to be placed in the area of the actual service. You will always need to take the time to know how each parish handles these matters. When in doubt, advise customers to send flowers before or after the service to the home to ensure that the arrangement is enjoyed by the family members who are in mourning.

Eastern Orthodox ServicesSimilar to the Catholic services outlined above, placement of the flowers during the services may be problematic. Families will sit in mourning for the three days prior to the burial. Flowers are best delivered to the home if your customer prefers to send condolences prior to the service. There is an emphasis on white flowers, but this color palette is not required. Again, it is most important to be aware of the rules set by the specific cathedral.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints – Mormon ServicesFlowers are a welcome addition to these services as well; however, you do not want to send anything with a cross or crucifix. Mormons believe in the resurrection of the body of Jesus Christ, however they do not celebrate the cross. Most services are not held in the temple, but are often held in a church, funeral home, or at the graveside. Flowers are welcome at all points of mourning – however, it is most common for visitors to express their comfort to the family after the services. Thus flowers sent to the home after the service may be the best to recommend.

Jewish ServicesMost often flowers are not appropriate for a Jewish service; however, this is changing, and your customer will need to be aware of the traditions. Orthodox services will not welcome flowers, thus it is best to send gourmet baskets with fruit to the family after the service. Services are held within 24-hours of death, and often flowers are not welcome. However, in reform Jewish traditions, flowers may be welcome at the service. If in doubt, do not recommend flowers. After the service, the

family sits in “Shiva” or a period of mourning for 7 days. During this time, you would want to send fruit baskets and desserts. The newer traditions allow for flowers but be careful and make sure your customer is aware of these customs.

Buddhist ServicesTo best honor a Buddhist funeral, you should not suggest any type of food or gift basket. Flowers are appropriate, but you should keep in mind that most services are held in the family home so space may be an issue. The family does not accept mourners prior to the service, and this should be taken into account should your customer want to send flowers early “for the viewing” as this is not norm. As in some other traditions, you should not send red flowers as it is considered poor etiquette.

Hindu ServicesHindu funerals take place more quickly than even Jewish services. The funeral takes place in the home before the sun goes down on the day of death. Cremation should take place within 24 hours. While flowers may adorn the service, these are from the family, and flowers should not be sent as a form of sympathy. Ten days after passing, the family holds a visitation at the home. At the visitation, fruit is expected. Any flowers sent for the service or to the family afterwards would be a part of a newer tradition and should be handled with care. Traditionally, no flowers would be sent, but if your customer knows the family is of the new tradition and would welcome the idea, then flowers would be appropriate. However, please be sure your customer is aware of these traditions and knows the family well enough before deciding to send flowers instead of a traditional fruit basket to the home.

Muslim | Islamic ServicesThe appropriateness of flowers for a Muslim service is dependent on the family. If these preferences are unknown, your customer will need to reach out to close friends, family, or the Imam. Should flowers be welcome, fragrant flowers, most often roses, are popular. Palm branches, foliages and other flowers may be placed on the grave. Services are typically held in the mosque. The men are permitted to go to the graveside. If in doubt, the best option is to encourage your customer to send fruit to the family during the three days following the service, as it is expected that the close friends

and family provide for the immediate family during this time.

Hispanic ServicesHispanic traditions are very similar to those of the Roman Catholic Church. However, in Hispanic services, you will also see more personal touches applied to the service with personal items placed in the casket and even on the easels and arrangements adorning the services. Cross-shaped designs and custom candles are appropriate and common gifts. Bright colors are welcome. The Cempoalxochitl flower is considered the “flower of the dead” and is commonly seen on the Altar in Latin American countries. You may also see overnight wakes. Wake is another word for visitation or viewing. Even mariachi bands during the mourning leading up to the service are often a popular expression of music.

Asian ServicesWhile flowers are a welcome addition to the services, it is advisable to check with a close family friend about how each service will be presented. Most services are held in the family home or family church. Chrysanthemums are the traditional flower of grief for most Asian countries, and this is something that would be an appropriate suggestion. Most funerals will have an abundance of white and yellow as these are the most appropriate colors. Red is a symbol of joy and happiness, and thus not a proper color to send to a grieving family. Flowers are not banned from any portion in most instances, but colors are of utmost importance – even if red was the favorite color of the deceased.

While this may seem a bit overwhelming, knowing these few details will help you to assist your customer select the perfect expression of sympathy for the family. When in doubt, do not be afraid to reach out to those arranging the service to verify the appropriateness of what your customer wants to send. While the customer is always right, we need to make sure the customer is well-informed. It is our job to make certain that our customers are best represented and ensure that their condolences are accepted in the best possible way.

A Park Hill cottage chair is decorated with a floral garland fashioned from Park Hill hanging bottles on string. Bottles give the floral garland a water source for longer life. After the celebration the chair becomes a lasting remembrance as an accessory for the home adding value to the remembrance.

TIMELESS TREASURES

“MEMORIES OF STORIES TOLD AND WORDS UNSPOKEN”

With the changes in sympathy expressions, Charlie Groppetti AIFD looked to days gone by to bring forward numerous ideas during the Texas Floral Expo. Each design captures an emotion bringing to light a lifetime of memories. A celebration of life, today oftentimes, replaces the traditional visitation and funeral service. These ideas provide sentimental creativity to capture the unspoken words and express through flowers the untold feelings of family and friends.

Page 25: JUNE 2018 TEXAS in Bloom - Texas State Florists …Texas in Bloom THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE TEXAS STATE FLORISTS’ ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 170760 | Austin, Texas 78717 | 512.834.0361

A set of 3 vintage style suitcases from Park Hill Collection are stacked containing a fresh flower tribute as well as an ideal place to display personal items from the deceased. Perhaps an old pocket watch is added to the design, a hat, or even an old favorite pair of shoes. It is a thoughtful way to offer a more personal approach to memorial tributes that families may help create.

“A TRIBUTE TO EVERLASTING LOVE”Dryable fresh flowers are simply bundled and tied up to dry on a Park Hill Collection Tobacco leaf drying basket. Each bundle has a hang tag with a personal note referring to a special memory and reflecting the symbolic nature of each flower selected in the basket. For example: “ these are the same flowers I gave you the day I asked you if you would marry me”. The design is simple, but the combined sentiment can be a powerful and a very moving personal tribute. An A-frame ladder replaces the traditional wire or wooden easel.

This metal picking basket by Park Hill Collection is designed with concentric rings of fresh flowers that will slowly dry in place to create a lasting floral design providing timeless enjoyment. The tight placement and using flowers with good drying characteristics ensures success.

As we prepare for the Texas Floral Forum and begin thinking of the importance of continuing education, don't forget to let customers know you are investing in continuing education. The Texas Floral Forum provides an excellent opportunity to share with your audience your commitment to staying current and on trend, as well as, bringing the most value and best experience to your clients. As you get ready to attend the Texas Floral Forum, create a social media plan for when you are at the event. Consider what kind of posts you will share, what your audience might find most interesting and how what you learn over the weekend will translate directly to added value to your customer. Take your audience on the journey with you

and tell them a story with each post. Also, take pictures of things you learn and find interesting and let your audience know how you plan to use all that you’ve learned or why a particular moment resonated with you. Each time you post an image, do not forget to tag your posts with #txflorist. Using this will help others find you and will also allow your posts to be shared by TSFA and other guests at the Texas Floral Forum.
