Commodore’s Corner

Hi All...Happy Summer! Well! we are officially in the heat of the summer here in Tucson. The May Regatta was so great and I want to thank everyone involved. It takes many club members, and lots of their time and effort to create the great weekend that we en-joyed. I can not begin to say “Thank you” enough! The wind was just right for the races, the days before and after were not favorable for sailing so our race weekend was the perfect weather of the month. Thanks again to Marshall and the race team for anoth-er outstanding weekend!

Duff did a wonderful job with the cruise and it was a fun time from the stories I heard. I hope that one day soon, Louie and I will be able to do a little cruising with everyone too. Thanks Duff for all your work and planning Please remember there is no Bridge meeting in July and the Loft party will be at my house on Saturday, July 23 at 6:00 PM.

The June members meeting will be this coming Wednesday, June 22. I hope to see you then. Lisa Rundle Commodore Tucson Sailing Club

Spring Cruise in the Sea of Cortez by Duff Fletcher

Always & Forever left for Aqua Verde on the way to La Paz. Making 2 knots into a confused sea

dead into the wind, about two hours out, the auto helm failed. Back into Algodones Bay – not repair-

able. Changed plans and headed to Santa Rosalia. About

two hours out the headsail came down – fitting on the end

of the halyard failed. Back into Marina Real and a Sunday

trip to Home Depot and found a small carabiner that would

work. This time we made it to Santa Rosalia. The city now

has a brand new Ley’s supermarket that is perhaps twice

as large as the one in San Carlos. Motor sailed down to

Punto Chivato where we attempted to swim with a whale

shark, but he was swimming faster than we were – not

fast, but faster than we were. Sailed to Santispac in Bahia

Concepcion.

Rode into Mulege – visited the mission and the old prison. Then

onto Santo Domingo at the north end of Bahia Concepcion. I

took a long hike part way across the peninsula that encloses

the bahia. Suddenly, staring me the face was a big buck. Unfor-

tunately, he turned and ran before I could pull the camera out.

From there we sailed to Punto Pulpito where we explored the

sea cave by dingy. Punto Pulpito is an extinct volcano with a

large obsidian vein. Two kayakers from New Zealand passed

by us on their way to Loreto.

From there we sailed to

Ramada which is the north

side of San Juanico. The

kayakers were camped there

so we had them over to the

boat for happy hour. Wave

Glider had been in San

Juanico, but we missed her.

Page 6: June, 2016 Vol. 45, No. 6 June Club Meeting...June, 2016 Vol. 45, No. 6 June Club Meeting When: June 22, 7-9 PM Program: Terry Prince discussing the recent purchase of a Baba 30 and

From there we motor sailed to Sweet Pea on Isla San Marcos

where we met Richard and Terry on Dance Baybe and Steve

and Francie with their son on Second Sun. The three boats

then went to Santa Rosalia.

From there Dance Baybe and Always and Forever went to

Punto Chivato. On the way we stopped at the gypsum mine on

Isla San Marcus and toured the town – except for the dust, it is

extremely neat and clean. At Punto Chivato we finally caught

up with Sue and Barry on Wave Glider. Sue cooked us a great

dinner on Wave Glider. Another night we ate a small Mexican

restaurant. For golfers, there is a golf course in Punto Chivato.

The tee boxes are small pieces of indoor outdoor carpet, the

fairways are desert scrub and the ‘greens’ are course sand. In

compensation the cup is about eight inches in diameter.

Always & Forever and Dance Baybe then went to Santispac

where Harry and Richard came up with enough clams for a

great clam chowder meal on Dance Baybe. Because of lack of

refrigeration, Always and Forever is notorious for supplying

chips and dip at pot lucks and happy hours. However, Harry

has bought a small refrigerator and Dance Baybe was sur-

prised when had them over for grilled chicken and fresh vege-

tables.

From there we sailed back to Santo Domingo. Another hike,

this time holding the camera with a finger on the on button –

alas, no deer. From there the two boats returned to San Car-

los.

Spring Regatta Race Results

We had near perfect conditions for our Spring Regatta with winds both days around 10 knots with smooth waters. We had 20 boats in 5 classes with close racing both days. Three fantastic parties added to the great time had by all. Thanks to Duff Fletcher, the committee boat crew and to Race Chairman Marshall Williamson for a fine regatta.

What was new in this regatta? Instead of the dock party, opening Regatta ceremonies were held at a BEACH party on the beach at Condos Pilar. Food and drink were provided by El Saguarito restaurant and " Good ole Boat Magazine" The club was there past the leg-endary sunset. Saturday: The winds were light to moderate, 22 boats participated. Commodore's party was fabulous, hosted by Lou and Lisa Rundel. Fabulous Paella was served by Bob and Marti Bur-den Sunday: Awards dinner at Sunset grill, superb dinner and a live jazz band. Members and their Boats

In March I adopted a 1985 Baba 30 in San Diego. This is a Bob Perry designed double-ended cruis-er that was built in Taiwan.

Joshua is in good shape – the brightwork and interior had been well maintained. The deck and many mechanical areas offer plenty of projects for me going forward, which is fine, I was looking for a re-tirement project. At the June meeting I’ll show a few pictures and talk about Joshua and some plans for the future. Terry Prince

Sailing Books Member Recommendations If you have a favorite sailing book, video or movie that you’d like to recommend, let me know.

Paul Wiley recommends: Most likely not new to many of you, but a classic and overall one of my favorite books of any genre is Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum. Mr Slocum was an old salt who in his later days acquired a gaff-rigged sloop in the New England area called Spray. He took it damn near down to the bare keel and built it back up, and eventually sailed her alone around the world, being the first man in history to do so. The account is ... attractively dry and straightforward. Slocum doesn't seem to have had much inclination for embellishment, and yet the story still draws you along. I loved it all three times I read it. I remember things like when he fell into the drink from his small tender and realized he didn't know how to swim, or following the life of one particular spider that came aboard in New England and sailed with Slocum through much of his voyage, almost as a pet. I hope that helps, and I can't wait to hear others' input cuz I m always looking for a good read. Cheers!!

Neil Barrett recommends: In a storm at sea, luck is highly biased toward the sailor who has a plan. So write Lin and Lar-ry Pardey in the third edition of their highly regarded Storm Tactics Handbook. They describe their concerns about the tendency of modern sailors to discard the classic methods used to bring sailing vessels of all sizes through amazingly strong winds and heavy seas. There is only one storm tactic that has the ability to sap the power of breaking seas, they ex-plain. With clear and concise diagrams, they proceed to show how heaving-to works and how even the most modern of yachts can be made to heave-to, whether with only sail power or with the assistance of a sea anchor. A discussion of the many ways heaving-to can be useful at sea as a way to help the crew keep well rested, to effect repairs, to steady a vessel should outside assistance ever be necessary will convince even those who plan to run before their imagined ultimate storm that heaving-to is still a must know. A series of user-friendly checklists will help sailors from the moment they start looking for their perfect offshore boat, through outfitting, and as they encounter their first storms at sea. Highly readable stories of the Pardey’s encounters with storms, and of experi-ences related by several other modern sailors, help illustrate and expand the points made in this book.

Brad Young recommend two documentaries: 1) Around Santa Cruz Island. This summer, Darlene and Brad are going around Santa Cruz island, because of this show.

A film by Marc Hersch. This is the video cruising guide to southern California's Santa Cruz Island positioned in the middle of the Channel Islands National Park just 25 miles off the Santa Barbara coast. Often referred to as "the Galapagos of North America," Santa Cruz Island is home to twelve species found no where else on earth and more than a thousand species of other plants and animals.

Sail along with Captain Marc Hersh and his crew as they cross the Santa Barbara Channel aboard Songline, a beautiful J42 fitted out with all the cruising amenities. Over the next 5 days, circumnavigate the Island, explore some 15 pristine an-chorages and take day-hikes ashore. Santa Cruz Island offers its visitors 96 square miles of natural wonder. The largest of the eight Channel Islands, Santa Cruz is administered by the National Park Service and the Nature Conservancy. It's surrounding waters are part of the Channel Islands NOAA Marine Sanctuary. 2) 600 Days to Cocos Island This is a beautifully filmed true adventure in full color about a two-year sailing voyage along the west coasts of Mexico, Central America, and the offshore islands of Cocos and the Galapagos. The California couple took this incredible adventure in a 32 foot sailboat touching many Mexican ports as well as places in Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, before heading off shore to Cocos Island and the Galapagos Islands. Shown in the film are their encounters with wildlife such as, Sperm Whales, Sea Turtles, Giant Manta Rays, Marine Igua-nas and many tropical birds including Blue Footed and Red Footed Boobies, Albatross, Great Blue Herons, Frigate Birds, Oyster Catchers, Pelicans and Tropic Birds and Penguins. The Galapagos Islands has a surprisingly cool climate for be-ing right on the Equator. Its climate is influenced by the cold Humboldt Current, which sweeps up from the Antarctic and through the Islands, causing an unusual mix of animals from both the tropics, and the Polar Regions. This was filmed by former Hollywood cameraman and is of excellent quality.
