PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
June is the gateway to summer and all
that entails: vacations, company, summer retreat
and quilting our summer projects. It also marks
the midpoint of our guild year. That made me
think that this was a good time to remind
everyone that we are so fortunate to be part of
such an active guild. We bring really amazing
national teachers right here to our meetings. We
host two retreats annually where we can spend 4

We have a wonderful website and a very

MEETING/MEMBER NEWS
Education Notes Jann Warfield
The winter/spring classes are over. I hope
you enjoyed and learned from the amazing
teachers we had the privilege to host. Ellen
Simon has scheduled some amazing opportuni-
ties for us this summer. Be there, or be square!
Pam Zeck has come up with a wonderful quilt
show challenge. Here’s something we can all
wrap our imaginations around. I hope everyone
will consider the possibilities of “Surprising
Sarasota”. What about Sarasota would you like
to feature in a quilt? Will it be one of the many
amazing buildings that touches your fancy? Will
it be the landscape of Myakka Park or the water-
scapes of the Bay or Gulf? Will you capture the
hustle of Main Street or the Farmers’ Market or
the joy of the local children at the Island Park
playground? Maybe the crack of the bat at
Spring Training or the intensity of the BMX rid-
ers at their new track on 17th Street. Perhaps the
flowers and leaves at Selby Gardens or the flow-
ering trees in your neighborhood. The sunrise
over the Celery Fields or the sunset at Siesta
Beach. Will you make it appear realistic, impres-
sionistic or graphic? So many decisions to
stretch our creative muscle. Just the decisions are
an education! I hope you ALL will go at least
that far in participating. However, the fun will be
in taking those decisions and committing them to
fabric. Whether we make quilts that define a pic-
ture or capture a feeling with color and shapes in
graphic blocks, we CAN ALL participate. Please
consider using this theme to learn something
about yourself and your craft/art. This is a won-
derful educational gift. So many decisions. What
will you choose? What will I choose.....hmm.....
MEETING/MEMBER NEWS
Program Notes Ellen Simon
Our program for Monday June 20 is not to
be missed. Rose Young, chair of the exhibit
committee of Art Quilters Unlimited, will present
Cityscapes - A Slice of Fort Myers. This exhi-
bition of twenty five long rectangular quilts has
been presented in seven different venues during
the last year. The exhibit “ strives to show how
Fiber Art textiles can convey feelings, scenes and
memories of our tropical home.” Rose will show
us many of the quilts and talk about how the ex-
hibit came to be. To round out the evening, our
own member, photography instructor Leslie
Lacktman, will talk about how to take good pho-
tographs to use as source material for fabric land-
scapes. And this is important information be-
cause Pam Zeck will tell you about our own guild
challenge, Surprising Sarasota. So join us in
June for an exciting evening.
At the May meeting I announced the July
program, Project Iron Quilter and handed out in-
formation fliers and registration forms. If you
missed the meeting, the forms are included in this
month's newsletter. I made some additions to
clarify some of the information. The Education
committee is really psyched about this program.
We want everyone to just have fun. To see how
much fun this could be, please check out a short
video on You Tube presented by Missouri Star
Quilt Co. Although their version of Iron Quilter
is not the same as our program, the spirit is what
we want to emulate. Google You Tube and then
enter Iron Quilter II – The Heat is On! It's lots
of fun.
Please remember to donate some fabric
for Project Iron Quilter at the June meeting.
Minimum size is a quarter yard, maxi-
mum one yard. Choose fabric you would want to
use – you might be the one grabbing it at the
Stash Dash table!

Library Letters
Ellen Simon
This month I will be adding eight new
titles, all of which were donated to the library.
First is a quilt history, West Virginia
Quilts and Quiltmakers. Many states conducted
quilt registration projects following the Bicenten-
nial. This group uncovered (pun intended) a
quilt from 1795. The stories are as interesting as
the quilts themselves, including one that looks
like it was made today in the modern style.
In the patchwork category, we have
WedgeWorks and WedgeWorks II by Cheryl
Phillips. You don't even have to go out to buy a
special ruler to make these projects—the ruler/
template is included in the book. These quilt
projects will remind you of Mariner Compass
blocks. To add to the Landscape category we
have Mosaic Picture Quilts by Pat Durbin. What
a timely donation as just last month I added an-
other book by Pat. These two compliment each
other. Another new landscape book is Land-
scape Quilts by Nancy Zieman and Natalie
Sewell. Totally opposite of Pat's technique of
piecing, these quilts are made with fusible ap-
plique. In the applique category we have
Replique Quilts by Chris Lynn Kirsch. Chris
taught at the guild about five years ago. This
book shows a very simplified method of working
from photographs.
Sawtooth – New Quilts from an Old Fa-
vorite, is another in the series of contests from
American Quilters Society. The quilts are amaz-
ing, many of them made by repeat winners of the
big quilt shows.
And last, Quilts Made Modern by Weeks
and Kerr. Only ten quilt projects but the book
has lots of useful information about design and
fabric choices.
MEETING & MEMBER NEWS
FKQG Embroidery Club Mary Nissen
The Embroidery Club is in the process of
making a quilt to donate to KiDZQuilts from the
group.
In Lieu of blocks for a block auction as
that is very hard to coordinate with everyone us-
ing different supplies, the embroidery club will
sponsor an Embroidery Basket for the Basket
Auction at the Quilt Show.
The Club is also thinking of sponsoring a
Birthday Basket. We have some main contribut-
ers among us, but would like more additions if
anyone is interested in joining this project for the

Quilts in Paradise 2017 Pat Sefton and Elva Farrell
We are moving closer to Quilts in Paradise 2017! Kudos this month to
Katie Metheney who has contracts with 13 vendors who have reserved space at our show.
Cathy Lane who has completed all of the blue ribbons that will be awarded at the show.
Karla Lynch who reports 19 gift baskets have been committed to date.
Susan Ott who has completed the quilt top for the opportunity quilt and it has been delivered to the
quilter.
Watch this space for monthly kudos and updates as the quilt show approaches.
There are many ways you can be involved and help make the 2017 quilt show successful. Quilt show
chairs are asking your help in these areas:
BLOCK AUCTION—Tena Davis and Hidden Stitches Calling all cottage groups, friends and individuals… One of the large money making efforts for our
quilt show is the Block Auction. Sets of blocks, enough to make a quilt top, are donated by mem-
bers for the auction. They are displayed at the show and the winning bidder takes home an almost
finished quilt. We are happy to receive many sets. You might want to try out that cute pattern you
saw on a YouTube tutorial (like Missouri Star Quilt Co.) Or, you may have blocks from an unfin-
ished project or antique blocks in good condition. Many of us have projects we are no longer inter-
ested in completing. (I asked my Mom to see if she had blocks she was never going to finish into a quilt). Some cottage
groups like to challenge others to see which group’s amazing blocks can bring in the highest bid! Please include a picture
and pattern of suggested ways to complete the quilt. Extra fabric may be given with the blocks to enable making additional
blocks or borders. Let’s all start sewing or gathering blocks so that we can make this a successful part of the quilt show
again next year. Someone will be delighted to buy your blocks and turn them into beautiful quilt with most of the work
already completed.
VENDORS—Katie Metheney Vendors needed! If you know of any shops, stores, artists, local or beyond that might be interested in vending at our quilt
show, please email [email protected] with contact information. Remember, a lot of quilt show vendors like to
come to FL for a break from the cold north!!
MAGAZINES and BOOK SALES—Bev Wilberg It’s not too early to put aside magazines and books that you would like to donate to the sales table. This is a painless way to
raise money for our programs. Magazines should be tied together in bunches of five. Because of the difficulty of storage,
please save your donations an bring them to Robarts on set-up day. We will also accept patterns this year. They may be
used, but should be complete. Help add to the financial success of the show.
JUDGING—Linda Blasen Spring cleaning? Recycle your old gently worn flat sheets with FKQG - any size, any color, any pattern! The sheets are for
use during the pre-show judging process. Bring to a guild meeting and give to Linda Blasen or any member of the Fantasy
Quilters.
GIFT BASKET BOUTIQUE—Karla Lynch
We're moving along with commitments for gift baskets. We're up to 19 and we thought you'd like to know what they are: a
Serger & Thread, Indigo Art Fabric, Art Fabrics, a Bear & Wagon with Quilt, Laundry, Bear, Knitting, Felting, Long Arm
Page 11 June 2016 Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild, Inc.
Door Prizes—Sue Balazs I am collecting quilt related items to be offered as door prizes to show attendees. I am seeking new (or almost new) sewing
or quilting items. This might include notions, fat quarters, fabrics, books, etc. I will have a labeled box on the quilt show
table at each meeting for donated items.
Challenge Quilt—Pam Zeck SURPRISING SARASOTA Challenge for all members. What do you feel is the most surprising thing about Sarasota? What
do you love about Sarasota? Rules: 1. The theme for the Challenge Quilt is "Surprising Sarasota". 2. Your quilt must be no
larger or smaller than 24 inches on each side. 3. All quilts must have a gusseted hanging sleeve and be labeled with your
name and phone number. 4. There is no challenge fabric - just the theme. Quilts will be judged by members, so put on your
thinking caps and get busy. Challenge quilts will also be hung at the FKQG show March 3-4, 2017 on a space available ba-
sis. If you want your quilt to be judged at the show, the entry fee must be paid to the Guild as with any judged quilts. Sara-
sota Magazine has agreed to feature the quilts in their March 2017 issue. If you want your quilt included it will need to be
submitted by early January. Watch future newsletters for more information.
DO NOT TOUCH THE QUILTS—Delores Simpson & Rosalie Clarke A Fun and Easy Challenge! Please help make our Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild show even more fun for our attendees by
making a mini quilt that will remind everyone not to touch the quilts. Guidelines 1. The
theme of each mini-quilt should be to remind attendees to please not touch the quilts. 2. Quilt
size—approximate maximum size-8 1/2 x 11 inches (like a standard sheet of paper). That
way they are not so small they could get lots but will not be so big they hog the limelight
from our quilts on display. 3. This is a chance to be clever, cute or funny in a non-rude way!
All fabrics are allowed, but piece must be a “quilt”, to include top, batting, backing and
quilted in some way. Use any technique you like. 4. Ideas for inspirations: A. Classic mov-
ies: Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Star Wars, etc. B. Super Hero figures: Wonder Woman,
Superman, Batman, etc. C. Cartoon characters: Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Scooby-doo,
etc. D. Fairy tales/fables: Cinderella, 3 Little Pigs, Little Bo Peep, Old Mother Hubbard, etc. E. (these are just a few ideas—
use your imagination! Have FUN!). 5. Quilts may be turned in to Rosalie Clarke or Delores Simpson at any guild meeting
up to and including the November Guild meeting. Members will have the opportunity to vote on which sign they like best at
the December holiday dinner meeting, where the quilts will be displayed. Mini-ribbons and prizes will be awarded for 1st,
2nd and 3rd places by number of votes cast by attendees at the December meeting. 6. Quilts will be posted at the FKQG
quilt show among the show quilts. 7. The “Do Not Touch” quilts become the property of FKQG and will be saved for use at
future shows. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact either Rosalie Clarke or Delores Simp-
son.
SMALL QUILT AUCTION—Cass Bowen and Marlene Kurtz We are happy to accept your work of art or any small quilt you might be willing to part with for the cause. The guidelines
for the small quilts are now posted on the Quilt Show Page on the FKQG website. Please bring us quilts!
Chemo Charity Quilts Cheryl Szynkowski
Just a reminder. When sending your
chemo charity quilts for long arming, the backing
needs to be 4 inches larger all the way around the
outside of the quilt and sewn. If possible, could
you please have your backing sewn together as
well. I have a difficult time finding enough time
to piece the backing. If you do not have batting,
please send $10 and I will put it in for you.
This is a wonderful cause and I am happy
to help. Thank you and keep them coming.
