A debate is an argument with rules. Two teams are given a topic
and then they come up with an argument in a very short period of
time. One team will argue for the topic (pro) and another team will
argue against (con).
The Green Dragon Team, the very cool name of the P9Q debate
team, works very hard before every debate. This year they had to
research very complicated topics like the banning of plastic bags,
the use of drones, and the removal of guns from the NYPD.
The Green Dragons, led by Mr. LaScala, has even experimented
with different and unique styles of debating. This year the Green
Dragons team participated in three debates.

On April 30th, the wonderful staff at PS009@882 held an Autism
event to celebrate its magnificent students. School
therapists, teachers and administration were all there to
support and help raise awareness for the cause. There was
information on effective intervention strategies available
for parents. The Autism event was filled with activities for the
students to enjoy. There were sensory stations, hands on activities
and a bouncy house. Everyone had a blast!

Over the past two school years, Arts Connection provided two
very successful puppetry residencies for our students in grades
K-8. P009Q. This past year we received a grant from the Office of
Arts and Family Engagement to develop an art program to engage our
families in unique art experiences and these funds were used to
continue to work with Arts Connection. We knew from experience with
Arts Connection that the arts motivate and inspire our students to
improve their performance in all disciplines. As part of this grant
we were also able to involve the larger school community of
teachers, paraprofessionals and related service staff in the
workshops. As a result they will be able to make connections to
infuse instruction while building stronger relationships among
disciplines.
Our goal was to create five family workshops in visual arts,
dance and music at five school locations. Each workshop was
designed to meet the cognitive, social and physical abilities of
the student body inherent at each school location. The funding from
this project enabled us to strengthen and deepen our relationships
with parents. It also provided our families, their teachers and the
entire school community with the opportunity to see their children
and our students as successful not only in the arts but in their
overall school performance. By involving our parents in meaningful
arts experiences in workshops designed for them, they were able to
gain a firsthand appreciation of the arts as a personal source of
enjoyment and learning for their entire family.

Every student started with the same shape of a body. All the
students in P9@IS5 then decorated the body to look like
themselves.
When everyone was finished the bodies were hung up in the
hallway.
I interviewed students from other classes. Class V64 said : It
was a great way to get to know students from other
classes.
Everyone said they enjoyed the experience!

Three different classes were able to order caterpillars. They
waited several days and then the caterpillars made their bodies
into the shape of the letter J. Then the caterpillars made cocoons.
The butterflies came out and lived inside the classrooms. They
sipped juice from oranges cut in half. When the butterflies were
ready the classes released the butterflies outside.
