A Message From The PresidentThis year is slipping by, but May was a fun month with the Vintage Autocraft Open House, the Annie Rose Poker Run for Leukemia and Zack's Tech Session at Porsche of Nashville. Thank you everyone at PON for a great day with lunch provided.

June is going to be even better....if you are going to our Concours in the Park and to the Porsche Parade at French Lick IN. I wish many of you who have never been to a Parade would attend one as they are great fun. Shirley and I have attended 5 or 6, with Traverse City MI and Hershey PA being the most scenic and fun. I expect the same out of French Lick, and it is so close.

The new PCNA Porsche Experience Center at One Porsche Drive in Atlanta is now officially open. It costs money to visit and partake of the driving experience there, but much cheaper than the Porsche Driving School at Barber if you would like to drive fast cars under supervision. Kent Kersten and I are visiting the Center end of July for a Region President's meeting so we will get to see the Center, but drive no cars.

July 18 is a special day as you have a choice to make on trips. Some club members will attend the Keeneland Concours in Lexington, while the rest of us will do a tour out of Lebanon up through the mountains to Gainesboro to lunch at the Bull & Thistle pub, and afterward drive down to Cookeville to see a private car collection of over 60 cars including Porsche, Jaguar, MG, Jensen, Ferrari and many more. Come with us for a fun drive with lunch in an Irish pub and then see the cars.

Our next dinner meeting is June 9 at 6:30pm at Puckett's Boat House Restaurant in downtown Franklin. Come join us~

Unbridled ExcessBy: D Badler

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about unbridled excess.

What got me started were news reports about the spring art auction season in New York, where a record was set for the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction… a Picasso painting called Les Femmes d’Alger (Version “O.”) For $179.4 million.

That was followed by the most expensive sculpture, Giacometti’s L’Homme au Doigt, which went for $141.3 million.

According to the e-newsletter Quartz, the dizzying prices are being driven, at least in part, by Asian and Russian billionaires… and tactics by the auction houses to offer price guarantees to the owners.

Quartz says us mere mortals shouldn’t worry. Only a small, closed club of super-rich can play. And the bidding is a way for them to boost their “prestige.” Or, put another way, it’s a way for them to say to each other that theirs is bigger than yours, or mine or anyone else’s.

The money, itself, really doesn’t mean anything. Which is hard to fathom. But it’s not unlike Jeff Bezos spending $200 million to buy the Washington Post. I mean, he wrote a check.

No, Quartz points out that the real shame is that the higher the prices go, the greater the likelihood that the paintings will vanish into private homes or, heaven forbid, secure warehouses… rarely to be seen again… which is why the artists made them in the first place.

It’s not unlike the collector car market, is it.

I recall reading about Ralph Lauren’s Bugatti Type 57SC, about how, if they run it for longer than, maybe, a few minutes, the engine has to be completely re-detailed.

How much longer will we see a Ferrari 250 GTO actually moving under its own power? Or even see one at all? If the market rate for one today is plus or minus $50 million, and climbing, how much longer until they, too, will be sequestered in giant safes?

Or a Bugatti Royale? Or any blue chip classic? And if that’s the start of the trend, how soon will it trickle down to your run of the mill Gullwing? Or 427 Cobra? Or 917? No, beyond a certain point, classic cars in private collections will be locked away, just like paintings, in private warehouses. Waiting for another oligarch with unlimited funds to come along and move it to their private warehouse.

What a shame.

But then there’s this guy, Paul Bailey. He’s a Brit. First he bought a McLaren P1. Then he drove it to pick up a Ferrari La Ferrari. And then, together with his wife, he drove over to pick up a Porsche 918 Spyder as well.

That’s right, all in the same day. The trifecta of modern supercars.

Page 6: June 2015 Newslettermsk.pca.org/newsletters/2015/Jun2015.pdf · June 9, 2015 Club Dinner Meeting, Puckett’s Boathouse, Franklin June 21-27, 2015 PCA Parade in French Lick, IN -

And he videotaped the whole thing. How do I know? I watched the video, through MotorAuthority, which got it from SupercarDRIVER.

And the guy provides a commentary on the video, about the similarities and differences between the vehicles, and what it’s like to be behind the wheel.

According to MotorAuthority, Bailey and his wife were co-owners of a communications company that they sold for north of $40 million.

Yeah, that’s not pocket change. But it’s hardly enough to raise a paddle for a 250 GTO, or a Picasso.

The article says Bailey “does his best to share (his cars) with the world in videos like these. Bailey is also a member of a group that raffles off rides in his cars, and the money supports worthy causes.”

Well, that’s special. But why do I have this vague discomfort about the whole thing? What am I supposed to think? Jealousy? Envy? Sure, he’s giving back, but aren’t his actions a bit over the top?

And, speaking of over the top, take the annual fund-raising dinner for the Robin Hood Foundation in New York.

Do you know about that event? Each year it sets a record for the amount of money collected for a “worthy cause” in one night. Because the audience is all hedge fund gazillionaires, people who can write a seven or eight figure check and not think twice about it. So bully for them.

I had a brush with it all, a few years ago. I was walking along and I saw… no, I heard this sound, I turned, and there it was, a Bugatti Veyron, in motion. I followed, on foot, and saw that it was pulling up to a hotel.

By the time I got up to the car, triple black, there was no driver in sight. I asked the doorman, who was driving? I fully expected the name of some sports or rock celebrity.

But he shrugged. He answered, this way, exactly, “ Just some guy. Who went on into the hotel.”

What do you know. Some guy. Some rich guy.

Every Porsche’s A HeroBy: Jim Cambron

Using “Hero” to describe a Porsche is anthropomorphic, but car-maniacs use whatever terms they need to explain their Porsche feelings. However, the only way your Porsche can be a Hero, is when you bless it with emotion. Your Porsche’s just sitting there, waiting for emotional allocation. Like my four furbies (two and a partial boxers and a Jack Russell); they’re on the deck most of the day, looking toward the road to the north and listening for my car if it approaches from the south; no purpose in life but to wait on my return home so we can resume playing. Your Porsche’s doing the same thing. It’s sitting patiently in the garage waiting for your return and approach with the key in your hand. The instant you touch the key to the door or the ignition, “All systems are go.” It springs to life—hoping you’ll bless it with affection.

How often is your Porsche a Hero? Or, how often do all the elements of the universe converge at one place and one time to generate emotion over your Porsche?

Certainly, it was a Hero with your first drive! I remember that day in November ‘02 when I signed the paperwork for my first Porsche: a Midnight Blue Boxster S. I didn’t really understand its capability; acceleration, handling, braking, or any other element of its performance, but I did know that my name was on the title, it was a genuine Porsche, and it was mine. My Porsche was a Hero! I knew it in my heart and I told it so. Not only was it my first Porsche, it was also my first convertible. Thank goodness it was a convertible; otherwise, I’d have had to leave my smile at the dealer; it’d never fit inside a Coupe.

I limit wasted Porsche miles. Wasted miles are when you use your Porsche for “just transportation”, without thinking of the driving experience—that’s why God made Hondas!

Don’t just grab your keys and jump into the Porsche. Savor the experience; think about it, plan it, day-dream about it. Selectively pick the road, the time of day, the approach; but that can still include driving to work, to dinner, or to the store.

Most every time I drive the 993 turbo it becomes a Hero. As I’ve mentioned before; the vibration, sound, smell, and feeling all congeal into an experience that overwhelms my senses and generates emotion: The Turbo S is a Hero! But this feeling’s not restricted to its 500 horsepower, this feeling is possible with every Porsche; the Super 90s and the C4’s—you just have to get into the right frame of mind.

I have Porsche leather key fobs color-coordinated for each car. I bought the black fob with the Midnight Blue Boxster and it’s the only thing left from that car. Even though it’s black, I kept it for the ’07 Boxster since Porsche never made a Midnight Blue fob. I got the Speed Yellow fob for the same color GT3 and the Guards Red fob for the Carrera White with red accents ’10 GT3 RS. Porsche never made a silver or white fob so I commissioned a leather worker to make them (with transplanted Porsche crests) for the Polar Silver Turbo and the new Carrera White Cayman R. I also have a collection of extra colored Porsche key fobs and used the natural brown leather one for the interior of the same color with my Macan.

I keep these fobs lined-up on brass hooks in my armoire and re-sequence them with each drive. Tuesday, the yellow fob was in front position; time to crank the GT3! I felt a twinge of excitement when I picked up the key; even switched from leather to rubber sole shoes since leather slips on the yellow car’s metal track pedals.

Walking into the garage—there it was in the last stall; bulging muscular rear tires: twelve and a half inches wide! Clean, waxed, shining, with black graphics accenting the bright yellow paint. Black wheels glistening under the garage lights. My eyes are not what they used to be, I’ve added a second fluorescent fixture with four more bulbs alongside the first fixture over each stall—now there’s plenty of light and more sparkle.

I opened the car door and crawled in, smelling the faint aroma of sweat, soaked into the leather driver’s seat from hours of race track intensity. Since my accident I have to crawl into the car head-first; I can’t sit and twist, but you get a good view when you enter head first. I see the black supple leather seat, carbon gear-shift and e-brake handle, and the stainless cage with chrome extinguisher. I settle into the racing shell and insert the key.

It’s always a thrill to light-off the Cup car engine. The lightened flywheel with no mufflers combined with the absence of sound-proofing and the plastic backlight makes it loud—it’s exhilarating. A couple of years ago, the lady across the street said she was nearly scared-to-death early one morning when I cranked my car. Her first thought was that a tank was invading her home. I asked her how often tanks invaded her property. I’m glad she moved to Decatur.

After you back the GT3 out of the garage and pull into the street, you can hear and feel the ratta-tat-tat of each cylinder as you idle down the hill. I take it easy the first couple of miles (yellow flag) to keep the noise down and warm-up me and the car. By the time I get to the main road (first lap), the water temp is a 175 and I “run-it-up” through the lower gears. I really enjoy feeling the 911 tires (green flag) squirming for traction in 2nd and 3rd gears. I am blessed with three 911s that’ll do it and miss that power in the Boxster.

On this particular morning, I turned on the radio and was surprised to hear a classic rock station instead of NPR. Steve Perry and Journey were singing “Don’t Stop Believing!” In a flash I was transported back to ’82; driving my Callaway Turbo Supra down the Florida panhandle from Orlando to Naples or Key West—usually late at night, always on the good side of triple digits with the sunroof stowed in the trunk, the cool night air coming in the windows as 400 watts blasted the frogs, crickets, and gators! What a great memory!

The yellow car can hit 60mph in less than 4 seconds, but that is slow compared to the speed of light emotional charge; loudly proclaiming: “THIS PORSCHE IS A HERO!” If any of you were outside about 4 o’clock Tuesday morning, you may have heard it. You probably thought it was thunder; no, it was my yellow car becoming a Hero once more. Your Porsche can be a Hero too. It’s not about speed or cost, it’s about attitude, and emotionalizing your car.

Make a conscious decision tomorrow to drive your Porsche with a purpose. No more wasted kilo-watts and no more wasted miles. Wash and wax your car. Plan a drive; hear it, smell it, feel it, and let it touch your soul. That’s why Ferry Porsche proclaimed: “When the last car is made, it will be a sports car.”

Every Porsche’s a Hero!

Event Details

This PCA Musik-Stadt (MSK) Concours event is designed to recognize the best maintained Porsches and participa-tion points will be applied toward the Enthusiast of the Year Award.

Cars will be evaluated based on specific criteria established by the PCA and published in the Parade Competition Rules (PCR) for the interior, exterior, storage compartment, and engine. Points will be deducted from 100 (perfect) against a standardized score sheet. Judges will be restricted to a standard time limit per car. Scores from the four areas will be totaled and the car with the highest score will win.

MSK Concours’ judging is based on the assumption that the Porsche to be judged should be in the same state of fit, finish, and repair as the day it left the factory. The best maintained cars will be those whose owners have repaired, replaced, and/or touched up items and areas that have deteriorated from “as new” condition.

It is the owner’s effort to maintain the car in pristine condi-tion that will be judged—not perfection.

The number of cars entered in each class will determine second and third place awards. Should more than one car have identical scores, the car(s) with the highest mileage will prevail.

The Concours opens at 8:30 a.m. Judging begins at 10:30 a.m. Awards will be presented at 1:00 p.m. The entry fee is $20 and preregistration is encouraged. Lunch will be available for purchase. For more information, contact Mike Moody at 615-426-8188 or at [email protected].

Callout Option Cleanliness will be judged only by visual inspection and not by touching the car.

Register at: www.clubregistration.netand search for Musik-Stadt events

Awards

Entries will be grouped into 12 classes and awards will be given for first-, second-, and third-place class winners in each category, as well as the People’s Choice and the Judge’s Choice. There also will be a special award for the car judged “excep-tional” by Porsche of Nashville.

SOLID GOLD JUNE 2015

PAGE 12

The Porsche Club of America cordially invites you to attend our 60th Annual Porsche Parade Celebration in French Lick Indiana from June 21-27, 2015.   Our 60th Parade coincides with the Club’s 60th Anniversary Celebration, and we’re planning a series of special events at French Lick that will pay tribute to the cars and people who have made us the greatest single marque sports car club in the world.  The 60th Parade will rightfully pay homage to the members and events of our past, but will also celebrate the Club’s newest enthusiasts who will shape our future.

Parade Registration will open to PCA members on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 12 Noon EDT. The best place to read about Parade activities is http://parade2015.pca.org/

For the first time in recent memory, we have not one, but TWO resort properties awaiting your visit, both listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The 3,000 acre compound also features three golf courses and a world class spa at each facility.

The French Lick Springs Hotel, established in 1832 and the larger of the two resorts, will be host to many of our familiar Parade activities. This city and the resort were named for an early French fur trading outpost and nearby salt lick. They recently completed a 600 million dollar restoration, bringing many comfortable present day amenities to surroundings that are authentic to the mid-19th century when the current facility was built. It is perhaps most known for their medicinal springs – “Pluto Mineral Water”. The actual spring is still part of their landscape, and the Gardens nearby will host our Welcome Party as well as various activities throughout the week.

Known as the 8th wonder of the world, and just down the street, you’ll find the West Baden Springs Hotel. This resort is home to the most breathtaking feature of our combined facilities this year; a free-span dome, the largest in the world until the Houston Astrodome was built in the 1960’s. An architectural marvel, this

breathtaking Atrium will host our Concours and Victory banquets.

Our Concours will be held a few steps through the covered bridge from the north end of the French Lick property. Rallies will depart from the grounds of the West Baden, and banquets will be held on both properties. The Parade 60th year museum, Hospitality, Goodie Store, seminars and many meetings will be at French Lick. Both resorts have lots of parking and car wash stations.

For those of you who are new to Parade, you need to register for Parade on the PCA or Parade website before getting access to the codes necessary to hold your room. Therefore, we recommend browsing all necessary information prior to opening day so you’re ready to go. You’ll need to know what events you want to enter, as well as which hotel is your preference. The registration guide will be on the Parade website by March 1st.

We will have our full complement of competitive events: Concours, TSD Rally, Autocross (at the nearby French Lick airport), and Tech Quiz. Add to that the Tours, Gimmick Rally, Golf Tournament, Art Show, Michelin Drive and Compare, Kids’ events, Tech Academy, cooking school, 5K run/walk, Parade of Porsches and more – you’ll be kept busy!

TARF Poker RunBy: Ken Maurer

Early on the morning of Saturday, May 9, the entrants for the 2015 TARF Poker Run gathered at Porsche of Nashville for the event. Porsche of Nashville was gracious to not only open their doors to us at that hour, but to provide a breakfast send off as well. After getting a little breakfast and some much needed coffee, we registered for the event (myself being a late navigator entry) and took off for various locations around Nashville and beyond.

We hit Music City Dream Cars, Maserati Nashville, a state park and ended the day at Track One in Nolensville. My driver and I even found time to take a scenic detour (others said we got lost, but I assure you, it was a scenic detour only haha).

Matt Shaw at Track One was kind enough to open his doors to our group as the last stop and provided lunch for the participants. This years’ event saw a variety of brands represented, including many Porsches, several BMWs, Nissan GT-Rs and a Ferrari, among many others. All in all it was great fun to support a great cause.

Porsche of Nashville Tech SessionBy: Ken Maurer

On Saturday, May 23, Porsche of Nashville sponsored a tech session for the Musik Stadt Region, PCA. On hand to cover a variety of topics and take all questions was one of their factory trained and certified mechanics, Zack Yanta. This tech session was very informative and interesting, and once again, Porsche of Nashville was a very gracious host, providing both breakfast and lunch to our group.

I absolutely love these tech sessions, because while they certainly whet my appetite for a new Porsche to get the latest technology and innovations, I always leave with a greater respect of my Porsche’s abilities and engineering; and I find the drive home to be even more enjoyable than before I attended.

For example, I have always loved the brakes on a Porsche. The feel, the bite, the way they work and are just always there when needed. However, have you ever wondered why Porsche’s brakes are so good? Zack explained that every Porsche, regardless of the model, is put through the same braking torture test -- multiple, repeated high speed stops. The goal of the test is to push the braking system to the limit, and if any fade or other undesirable characteristics are found during testing, the system goes back to the drawing board for a redesign.

Zack also touch on the IMS bearing for owners with M96 or M97 equipped Porsches. This was a topic of great interest to me, being the owner of a 987.1 Cayman. As anyone that frequents any online Porsche forums would know, this issue has taken on a life of it’s own online (as has almost any number of sounds emanating from the engine compartment that a poster finds odd or simply didn’t notice before). In the end though, while it is something to consider, and is worth thinking of replacing on an M96 if you are in the vicinity of the bearing, the bottom line is that we should not let such things deter us from enjoying our Porsches. Drive it, enjoy it, repeat and worry less.

Zack touched on a number of other interesting topics, and if you missed the tech session this time, keep your eyes open for other sessions in the future.

Enjoy your Porsche!

Many enthusiasts believe this is the best Porsche ever made!

I am the third owner of this 20 year old beauty. I purchased the car in April, 2004, and have put about 20,000 miles on it. Regular maintenance and service has been performed by the recognized local experts mentioned to the right. I have all service records.

The car runs perfectly and looks very good. Original paint shows signs of normal wear.

Originally sold from Porsche of Orlando, this car suffered a recall-related fire in the passenger compartment in 2001/2002. Repairs were performed by the second owner and included floor mats, carpet, door panel & passenger seat. I have photos of damage and repair info. At that time, the state of Florida issued a “rebuilt title.” Tennessee has no such designation so when I bought the car, a TN “salvaged title,” was issued. Thoroughbred Motorcars and Renntag Motorwerks have commented many times that they would have never known there’d been any damage to the car until I told them, such is the quality of the repairs and subsequent upkeep. What this means for you is that you can own a very nice, 1995, 911, (993) well below normal market value. Have a look and see for yourself.
