After the tour we will drive to Breckenridge over scenic Boreas Pass. ‘ROUND THE BENZ

June is here and the Pikes Peak Sec-tion has several events that are sure to appeal to all.

First, on June 8 is the Colora-

do Concours d’Elegance and Exotic Car Show at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, CO. The plan is to meet on Saturday, 7 June at 8:30 a.m. at Harvey LeCato’s house for a “Bagels & Buffers” car cleanup so you can get your car ready for the show.

Next, on June 21, please join us for breakfast at The Egg & I. After breakfast we will commence our South Park Week-end, featuring a tour of South Park City, a complete mining town museum that includes dozens of authentic buildings. After the tour we will sample the annual South Park Kick Ass BBQ festival, the

“Highest BBQ Competition in the world.”

On Sunday, we’ll drive to Como for a spe-cial tour of the roundhouse of the Denver, South Park & Pacific railroad, built in the 1870s. It is not normally open for public tours. After the tour we will meet for lunch in Breckenridge after a drive over Boreas or Hoosier Pass.

Finally, on June 28, please bring your Star Car to our first Star Party. This night-time event is for all you amateur astrono-mers or just star-gazers. We’ll be meeting at Absher Acres out in Peyton where it should be dark enough for a good view of the nighttime skies. We will have five or more telescopes for viewing opportu-nities, but if you own binoculars, please bring them, because they will be effective as well.

Please refer to the newsletter for more details and contacts for these and our other upcoming summer events.

As always, drive safely, and I will see you down the road.

AndrewWe Need Your Email Members, if you’ve been missing out on all the fun events so far this year, could it be because you’re not in the know? Is our newsletter go-ing to your significant other’s inbox and they don’t share? Or even worse, is it relegated to the dreaded junk email folder?

There’s an easy way to keep up with our fast-moving, fun-

loving little section and its great events this summer. Have the newsletter sent to

your inbox instead!

Star PartySaturday, 28 June 2014

7:00 p.m.Here it is June already and time for our first annual Star Party, being held at the home of Clark and Karen Absher on Saturday, June 28. The address is 17410 Prospector Drive, Peyton, CO.

Plan to arrive around 7:00 p.m. For a nominal cost of $5 per per-son, we will provide water, soft drinks, and grilled hot dogs. My wife will make her special Western Pennsylva-nia hot dog sauce to garnish your charcoal delight. We’ll have onions, mustard, ketch-up and buns. If you would like something else, please bring it with you.

Around 8:00 p.m., the evening will begin with a few short talks on what we’ll be doing and seeing. We will set up a few computers with astronomy programs to show you what we might be able to see (depending on weather). If you have a Windows-based computer, get a head start by downloading Stellarium at http://stellarium.org/. It is a very good, free astronomy program. If you have an iPad, go to the app store and download the free program pUniverseHD. You will be able to see a virtual sky from your location, the solar system, the sun and planets, objects visible right now, and local stars. This is an easy-to-use app.

We will also be showing movies, some-thing sci-fi related; Charlie Bennett is not telling what he has planned.

As soon as it gets dark, we can move to the viewing area, where we will have at least five telescopes set up. Remember, NO WHITE LIGHTS. If you have a flash-light, we will have some red plastic along with rubber bands to make your flashlight into a safe light. You will be free to go between telescopes to see what’s in the night sky; each operator will explain what

you are seeing. If you have never looked through the eyepiece of a good telescope, you’re in for a real treat. We will have a good view of the north, east and south skies.

Remember to bring along a jacket and/or blanket because it can get very cool after the sun goes down. Insect repellent is a must. If you have lawn chairs, bring them

and your binoculars along. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll be able to see using a simple pair of binoculars. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on an expensive telescope to enjoy the night sky. With a simple set of 7x40 or 10x50 binoculars you will be able to see Jupiter and

its moons. The trick is knowing where to look. We will be away from the city lights, so you will be able to see a lot more in the evening sky. If you happen to have a telescope and would like to bring it along, please let me know.

Please RSVP to Ken Sheehan by 21 June, at [email protected], or by calling me at 719.433.9025. You can also contact Judy Bennett at [email protected].

This should be a fun evening for every-one. Hope to see you there.

The Best or Nothing!

Charity Car Show - 8 June 2014The Colorado Concours d’Elegance & Exotic Car Show will be held on 8 June at Arapahoe Community College, 5900 S. Santa Fe Dr, Littleton, CO. Car enthusiasts from around Colorado and beyond will showcase nearly 500 of the most unique,

rare and exotic sports cars on wheels today. Contact Harvey LeCato at 719-331-1212 or [email protected] if you would like to attend. If you’d like to see the show for free, in exchange for 3 hours of volun-teering at the show, let Harvey know.

Bagels & BuffersTo get into the spirit of the car show sea-son, we will have a Bagels and Buffers get-together on 7 June, the day before the show.

The great clean-up will take place at Harvey’s “es-tate” at 7460 Taos Dr, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and bagels. Electricity will also

be provided. Bring your detail kit and a sharp eye to catch and get rid of those im-perfections. If you are interested in attend-ing, please RSVP to Harvey by 5 June.

Joint Section Picnic - 12 July 2014We had such a good time at our picnic last year that we’ve decided to do it again. Clark and Karen Absher have offered to host the 2014 Joint Section Picnic once again. It will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Absher Acres.

Everything will kick off at noon with a ca-tered lunch, followed by a short, fun rally,

and then dessert and the trophy presentations at a mystery location. All you need to bring is a Mercedes, and $10 per person to cover the cost of the catered lunch. Lunch begins promptly at noon, so plan to arrive no

later than 11:45 AM. Arrive with a full tank of gas.

Absher Acres (17410 Prospector Drive, Peyton, CO) is located on the north facing slope of the Palmer Ridge, four miles north of Peyton. All driving will be on paved roads except for the last 1/2 mile upon your ar-rival at and departure from Absher Acres.

In addition to those choosing to participate in the rally (maximum of 16 teams), we will need at least 4 teams to manage the speed gun and check points during the rally. The rally winners (first, second and third) will be determined by accumulating the fewest penalty points (assigned for traffic viola-tions, failures to fully complete challenges, and missing the pre-established time to complete the rally). The rally will be be-tween 50 and 70 miles in length and the closest gas station is 14 miles.

In order to plan for the quantity of food, please RSVP to Clark or Karen by July 7, 2014 at 719-749-2621 (home phone), 719-332-5334 (Clark’s cell phone) or [email protected]. When you RSVP, please indicate if you would like to be a rally par-ticipant or a rally worker.

We look forward to your attending, and we guarantee you will have an enjoyable afternoon. Last year we had 48 members and guests, so this year let’s shoot for a minimum of 60. Before the day is done, you will see some things you have never seen before, and others that will take a good long-term memory to recall when and where you last saw them.

Drive to the Clouds - 19 July 2014It’s time to head for the hills, everyone. Yes, we’re driving to Mt Evans, on a trip to the clouds. Drivers will meet in Woodland Park and head north for a scenic drive through the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Our destination is the summit of Mt Evans via the high-est paved mountain road in the United States.

We will take the Mount Evans Scenic Byway (CR 103) from Bergen Park, CO about 10 miles to Echo Lake, and CO 5 from Echo Lake for 15 miles, ending at a parking area and turnaround just below the

summit. This route is only open in the sum-mer. A no-host lunch is scheduled at the Echo Lake Lodge following our drive.

For those in the Paved Peaks & Passes program, you will acquire 3 stamps for your passport - Squaw and Juniper Passes as well as Mt Evans itself. This will be a great drive. Plan to join us!

Dragonman’s Military Museum - 16 August 2014The August Fun Run is going to be just that - a ton of fun. We’re going to the Colo-rado Springs Historical Military Museum owned by Mel Bernstein, aka Dragonman.

Mel has every Army Jeep, every German belt buckle, every land mine from World Wars I and II. Exhibits include a complete

field hospital from the Gulf War, a pyramid of 500-pound bombs from the Vietnam War, 70-year-old sticks of dynamite in the “booby traps” exhibit, and even gas masks for babies. The sounds of gunfire and explosions from Mel’s firing ranges filter through the walls and add to the atmo-

sphere.

Mel knows exactly how many displays he has, how many vehicles, how many guns, how many uniforms. He seems to know the history, specs, and price that he paid for every item, and he’ll tell us all about it.

Join us after breakfast for the tour of this fascinating repository of military memorabilia.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

The Pikes Peak Section has created a regional event extravaganza for 2014, “Mountains, Movies & Mercedes.”

The weekend experience begins with a catered reception at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs on Friday night amid the Star Cars of today. We will provide heavy hors d’oeuvres and adult beverages to all of our participants.

We have reserved hotel rooms for our participants at the local Hampton Inn; go to http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/groups/personalized/C/COSNHHX-MEZ-20140829/index.jhtml?WT.mc_id=POG. The rate is $139 per night and it is good until 30 July.

Saturday will begin with a hosted breakfast at our event HQ for all participants before leaving on a guided tour of the most spectacular and aptly named spot in Colorado Springs – Garden of the Gods. Then we head up the Pikes Peak Highway to the summit of America’s mountain, Pikes Peak. After photographing our Star Cars in the world’s highest Car Corral, we’ll return down the mountain for a hot brake check and a complimentary box lunch at a scenic picnic area on the mountain.

Then it’s on to the world-famous, 5-star Broadmoor Hotel and a tour of their 8500 square foot El Po-mar Carriage House Museum. This collection of 31 vintage horse-drawn carriages and 5 motorized carriages includes 3 Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb race cars (circa 1920s) and 2 presidential carriages.

Dinner (no host) will be at the iconic Golden Bee at the Broadmoor. Pub fare, including their famous fish & chips, yards of ale and plenty of English charm are just a few reasons our participants will enjoy the lively atmosphere of this authentic English pub.

The main event happens on Sunday, we will ren-dezvous for a theme-based rally keyed to the secret drive-in movie. Clues along the rally route will pro-vide hints as to what the title is. Arriving back at our event HQ, we will be treated to a sit-down, catered dinner and dessert, complete with adult beverages. We will present prizes to the coolest driver on the Pikes Peak Highway, as well as the rally winners.

At dusk, we will line up the Star Cars in front of the two gigantic movie screens; convertibles with tops down, of course. By dark, everyone will have visited our movie concession stand to stock up on popcorn and Twizzlers. Tune in your car radios to the proper frequency to enjoy the movie soundtrack. Then settle back and enjoy the movie.

The cost for this great weekend is only $70 per person and includes the reception, continental breakfast, box lunch, rally, dinner and snacks, and most importantly, adult beverages for 3 days. We also have an ala carte option for the rally, dinner, and movie only for $40 per person. Your paid reservation must be received by 11 August. Make your check payable to Pikes Peak Section MBCA and send to Dan Kerbs, 7183 Stinson Dr, Colorado Springs, CO 80920.

The DIY Tech Sessions have been long associated with saving money on oil changes and tire rotations. But the record “dollar benefit award” from our Tech Ses-sions so far must go to Dan Kerbs and Gary Gagnon! Dan had an ML with run-ning boards, Gary had one without. Dan & Cheryl would rather have not had them, and Gary and Diane wanted them.

With four hours work, some expert guid-ance from the on-hand tech, and some additional help from Ken Sheehan and a friend, they were able to swap all the parts out, without damage or injury. Each saved over $1000 in parts and labor, and felt a great sense of accomplishment. The aches and pains subsided within a week!

Thanks to Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs for all their support!

VMCCA Fun Run Recap The Pikes Peak Section made our annual trek to Canon City and the VMCCA Car Show on Saturday, 17 May. The organizers did a great job of lining up the vintage and muscle cars under cloudy skies. We ad-mired the paint jobs and wondered where the Mercedes were - none to be found.

Then it was off to Fred Daams’ house to see the progress he’s made on his Spitfire. It was standing in his driveway, complete with propeller and magnesium wheels. Fred treated our group to a short back-

ground on his expertise and the progress of the airplane. We’re hoping to see wings next year!

It was back to the cars for the next leg of our day’s journey. We headed west on US 50 to Skyline Drive and the first P3 pass-

port stamp of the day. Unbeliev-ably, several of our group had never driven this must-see Colora-do attraction be-fore. After some photo ops, we hit US 67 to Wet-more and parts south. We picked up pictures of Hardscrabble Pass before turning south on CO 165 to Bigelow Divide. Altogether, that’s

3 stamps in the P3 passport in one day.

After a good lunch at the Lodge at San Isabel, just east of Bishop’s Castle in Rye, we headed hom; a long, but rewarding, day of driving behind us.

dered where

‘ROUND THE BENZ

The Mercedes-Benz AMG Formula One team continued its winning ways with one-two wins at both the Spanish Grand Prix and the Monaco Grand Prix in May. Drivers Nico Rosberg and Louis Hamilton swapped wins in the two races and are dueling for first place in the Drivers’ Championship standings. Mercedes AMG has a substan-tial lead in the Constructors’ Championship, ahead of Ferrari and Red Bull Racing.

And speaking of Formula One, the engine is dead, long live the power unit. Well, that’s the assertion of Mercedes-Benz which came up with it when crafting the new power unit for its 2014 Formula One car. As the automaker explains, the change in terminology reflects the fact that the power unit in the latest Mercedes AMG F1 car, which is now adds the word “Hybrid” to its title to reflect its electrification, is far more than just an internal com-bustion engine.

Instead, the power unit consists of an engine and then a pair of electric motor-generators (one integrated with the main driveline and another with the turbocharger). This level of integration is in contrast to the previous setup where the internal combustion engine was developed separate to the KERS which effec-tively ‘bolted on’ to a pre-existing engine configuration.

The significance of all this is that in the future, when the technology eventually migrates to road cars, we won’t be asking what engine is under the hood but rather

what power unit is present.

“What we are seeing in Formula One today is the next generation of innovations that will eventually find their way from the race track to the road,” Mercedes-Benz motor-sport chief Toto Wolff said in a statement. “Mercedes-Benz is leading the way in pro-moting the positive new direction the sport has taken.”

But vehicle electrification is not a new concept for Mercedes-Benz; in fact the as-sociation between hybrid technology and performance stretches back over a century for the automaker. The early experiments of Daimler chief engineer Wilhelm May-bach focused on combining the gasoline engine with alternative drive technologies in the early 1900s.

However, the automaker’s first true hybrid was the Mercedes Mixte, employing a se-rial hybrid drive incorporating a gasoline engine and a dynamo that converted the energy of the engine into electric en-ergy that then powered a pair of motors mounted to the rear wheels. To demon-strate its performance, a Mixte race car was developed before the end of 1907, with a 55-horsepower engine generating electricity that would then power the motors mounted to the wheels.

Today, Mercedes-Benz’s hybrid technology is dominating at the highest level of motor-sport, with the W05 Hybrid driven to victory at every race so far in the 2014 F1 season.
