I SAW ANincredible quote
the other day on
Instagram andI immediately
reposted it. It said
this: "When you
complain, you make
yourself a victim.
Leave the situation,
change the situation,
or accept it. All else
is madness." by
Echart Tolle
I am a huge fan of inspirational quotes, as those who
know me can attest to. And this one really hit home.
I've been guilty of complaining about things: my weight,FHUWDLQ UHODWLRQVKLSV P\ QDQFLDO VLWXDWLRQ HWF 7R PH
I thought by venting it would just get it off my chest. I
never thought of myself as a victim. I can't stand it when
people act like victims to their situations. So, when I
and I consider myself to be a very strong, independent
woman saw myself as victim (based on that quote),
it completely frazzled me. I'm no victim! I refuse to be a
victim! Therefore, I refuse to be a complainer.
Instead, I'm going to re-examine the things I've
complained about in the past and do one of those three

not a victim. And for those things I cannot change, as the
serenity prayer states: God grant me the serenity to accept
the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I
can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Something else inspired me this week and that
something is a person: Dallas Robinson. I had the pleasure
of speaking with him on the phone for a few minutes to
get some additional details for his article appearing in this
magazine, and wow, what a guy! He works full time for
the Army National Guard and as a coach at a university.
He refuses to take on anything that would impede his
ability to serve his country or coach and minister to collegekids. Even when he was training for the Olympics, he held
onto both jobs, trained hard and took vacation time to do
interviews and to go compete. Talk about dedication! Find
out more about Dallas on pages 36-37.
I hope I've inspired you a little today. Feel free to e-mail
me at [email protected] and let me know your
thoughts.
Until next time,

V MORE OF EVERYTHINGAfter recently completing Basic Combat Training(BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT, whichis job training) and returning to Orange County, I got really into fitness and health. I've always hadmuscle but just bulky and far from toned muscle since I had always played sports in the past butnever knew about clean eating or supplements. Upon my return, I have grown passionate about
changing my lifestyle by improving my knowledge in nutrition and physical training. Max Muscleis minutes from base, so I go quite often on my lunches. Max Muscle has helped me acquire newknowledge on ways to better myself and my performance. I am currently doi ng CrossFit at CrossFitRXD in East Anaheim, and have been using Max Muscle supplements to get the best r esults of mynew lifestyle. Being passionate about my level of fitness has been beneficial in every aspect of mylife, especially being in the militar y. Not only do I hold one of the highest Physical Training scores inmy unit, but I also influence those around me with the new knowledge I have. Other soldiers see mydedication to eating clean and working out, and now come to me for advice or are complimentingme on my meals and workouts, which is very meaningful to me. So, with all the products andknowledge I've been getting from Max Muscle, I've been getting in better and better shape. I feelbetter all around. I get better sleep. I've hit multiple personal records and I'm more tone than I'veever been.
Heather Doppke, strong Max Muscle customer, Westminster, California
CRITICAL PART OF HIS SUCCESSIn college I shattered my tibia and fibula playing football and had to have a
steel rod and two screws inserted in my leg for a year and a half. I retired fromsports at the advice of my parents and doctor but stayed active with wrestlingas an assistant high school and middle school coach for 8 years until a newjob wouldnt allow me to coach anymore. I moved to the Bay Area fromPhiladelphia in February 2009 to take a job with Kaiser Permanente. I was230 pounds and hadnt seriously worked out or trained since I broke my leg in1997 (I'd lost the motivation since I wasnt competing in sports anymore).
I started to lose some weight on my own and was working with a fewdifferent personal trainers, training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and taking thesupplements they recommended that the gym sold. I wasnt really seeing resultsthat I wanted. I even ended up injuring my shoulder in a workout because theywanted to go beast mode instead of training smart and for a purpose.
Then I started training with Bryant Pangelinan in the summer of 2011post shoulder surgery and he developed a t raining strategy to get me back
to training BJJ and also suggested I talk to Kenny Tali at Max Muscle WalnutCreek about supplements to help me recover from workouts. I began tocompete in BJJ in January 2012 and have been pretty successful, making thepodium 22 times. Max Muscle supplements also played a big part in merecovering quickly from major knee surgery in 2012 and allowed me to returnto competitive BJJ in less than a year. The combination of training with MaxMuscle athlete and trainer Bryant Pangelinan and the supplements from KennyTali and his Max Muscle Walnut Creek team are a critical part of my success!

Pre-workout meals, snacks orshakes are a vital part of any training
program. Lets face it, working out
is not easy. Especially if you are
supersetting or training intensely for
more than 30 minutes. If you have
ever bonked, then you know what I
am talking about. Bonking is an old
marketing term for hitting the wall or
simply running out of nutrients to fuel
your workout. By taking a little extra
time to make sure your body has
the fuel to energize a great workout,
you can dramatically improve your
results. Here are a few simple tips
to help ensure that you will be
energized for your next workout.
I am sure you have all heard
the phrase, carbing up. We make
sure to focus on carbohydrates in
our diet to fuel our next workout.
Carbohydrates are quickly broken
down through digestion and stored
in our muscles as glycogen, which
is commonly referred to as muscle
fuel. Glycogen literally fuels your
muscles and when it is present,
you can do more reps, ultimately
increasing your endurance and
strength during your workout.
Be cautious of getting too much

Small amounts of protein (8-15
grams) before a workout can be

balance and ultimately preserving leanmuscle tissue. As your body is stressed,
it will need amino acids, which are
derived from protein. Amino acids are
readily available in your bloodstream
for 4 to 5 hours after you consume
protein. This is why most nutritionists
recommend protein every 4 to 5 hours
in smaller meals. Otherwise your body
will break down lean muscle tissue to
fuel stressed muscles and thats not
good.
The reason why I recommend small
amounts of protein before a workout is
that protein is very hard to digest, so
if you take in 30 grams, your body will
actually use energy for digestion rather
than training.
Lastly, avoid fats or make sure fats
make up a very small amount (less than
5 grams) of your pre-workout meal.
I love to make a quick shake about 45
minutes before I train. Here is a great
pre-workout recipe for an energizing
shake:
Extreme Pre-Workout Drink
6-10 oz apple juice
6-10 oz water (optional or use more
juice)
cup ice or frozen berries (or both)
banana
scoop MaxPro vanilla protein (15g)
1 scoop of Full Blown Extreme
Blend it all together and enjoy!
This shake will give you
approximately 30-40 grams of
carbohydrates and 15 grams of protein.
I add in the Full BlownExtreme to get some extra
energy for my workout.

It's Not Me,It's My Genes! Are you a lightweight when it comes to tolerating
pain? It may not mean that youre a baby but that
you have a gene variant for low pain tolerance, say
researchers who recently presented results of their
study at the American Academy of Neurologys annual
meeting.
e study, which involved more than 2,700 people
diagnosed with chronic pain who were taking opioid
pain medications, asked participants to rate their
perception of pain on a scale from zero to 10. Nine
percent of the participants had low pain perception
(high tolerance to pain), 46 percent had moderate painperception (moderate pain tolerance) and 45 percent had
high pain perception (low tolerance to pain).
When the researchers then studied the participants
genes, they found that the DRD1 gene variant was 33
percent more prevalent in the low pain perception group,
while the DRD2 variant was 25 percent more common
among those who perceived a high level of pain. ose
who perceived a moderate level of pain had more COMT
and OPRK gene variants.
Nobody (except the scientists themselves) need
remember the specific gene names. Suffice it to say that
there seem to be certain genes that play a role in pain
perception and pain tolerance.
Are you ready to start a new eating plan or exercise regime? Researchers from San Diego
State University say that youll most likely begin your new lifestyle program, at least by researchinghow to go about it, on a Monday or at least early in the week. Analyzing Google searches for healthy topics, such as healthy diet, the researchers foundthat on average, searches for such health topics were 30 percent more frequent at the beginningof the week than on days later in the week, with the lowest average number of searches onSaturday. This pattern holds true week after week, year after year. When the team examined whether media exposure could be driving this pattern of healthbehavior, they found that frequency of news stories encouraging healthy lifestyles peaked onWednesday and were statistically independent of health searches online. More likely, say theresearchers, that people perceive especially after a weekend of bad l ifestyle behavior Monday to be a new start, sort of like a mini New Year's Day.

You know that physical
activity is great for you not
only to get those sculpted abs,
but for an improved mood and
even a spicier sex life! But if
youre a serious athlete even
just a weekend warrior
chances are youll eventually
sustain an injury. According
to the U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commissions National
Electronic Injury SurveillanceSystem (NEISS), nearly 2
million otherwise healthy
people each year suffer a
sports-related injury that
brings them to the emergency
room for treatment.
Its likely that if your injury
requires medical care, youll
get the standard treatment
and advice: rest, ice,
compression and elevation
(RICE), a narcotic pain reliever,
perhaps a referral to anorthopedic specialist if things
are more serious. And in the
worst-case scenario, you may
be sidelined for weeks or
even months. But these days,
sports medicine specialists are
turning to other treatments
that can help to relieve pain
and avoid overuse of pain
medications as well as get
you back into the game sooner.
Here are some of them:

CRYOTHERAPY WITHINTERMITTENT PNEUMATICCOMPRESSIONCryotherapy with compression is
underused in sports injuries, yet its
preferable to narcotics, said Nathan

compression, or cryo with IPC is a
machine with a cuff that surrounds the
injured area knee, ankle, shoulder,
arm, hand or back with cold water at
a precisely controlled temperature, and
at the same time delivers intermittent
air compression (active compression/

therapy helps to return athletes to their
activity more quickly as well as reduces
the need for narcotic pain medication.

ELECTRICAL MUSCLE STIMULATIONOlympic athletes as well as pro sports teams use electrical
muscle stimulation (EMS) for injury rehabilitation, whichis a treatment where electrical impulses are delivered to
weakened or painful muscles through electrodes on theskin. EMS makes the muscle contract to prevent disuse
atrophy (loss of muscle); it also relaxes muscle spasms, increases blood circulation to the muscle and reduces pain.
It is commonly used for muscle pain, spasm and weaknessassociated with tendon and ligament injuries.
How It Works:Most EMS machines use an alternatingcurrent, which is delivered to the painful muscle area. When
the current passes through the muscle, it causes the muscleto contract, then relax and lengthen. One particular EMS
treatment, the ARP Wave, uses a direct electrical currentand a patented bio-electrical current to locate hot spots, or
areas of scarring caused by injury, which may be a distancefrom where the pain is felt, said Christopher Knott, MS, an
exercise physiologist and neuromuscular therapist fromColorado Springs, Colorado. Every injury causes a bio-
electrical disturbance, he explained. This creates a wallof tissue called scar tissue, which keeps the muscle from
GRLQJ LWV MRE RI DEVRUELQJ IRUFH $53 QGV WKH HOHFWULFDO
disturbances and neutralizes them, allowing your muscles to
do their job. While most EMS machines work while youre at rest, the
ARP Wave is used while youre doing a series of range-of-motion exercises and other exercise techniques, which
more quickly re-educates the muscle and speeds recovery, according to Knott.
Cost:Length of EMS treatment varies and costs between$65-$200 per treatment; some types of EMS are covered byinsurance if performed by a licensed therapist.
INTRAMUSCULAR STIMULATIONIntramuscular stimulation, or IMS, uses acupunctureneedles to penetrate deep within the muscle to target trigger
points, which are hyper-irritable areas of muscle that havebecome shortened, tight and weak. Trigger points can occur
with an acute sprain or with a repetitive stress injury, like atennis elbow. IMS reduces the need for pain medications by
hoping to cure the problem rather than mask the symptoms, said Chris Centeno, MD of Boulder, Colorado, who is board
FHUWLHG LQ SK\VLFDO PHGLFLQH DQG UHKDELOLWDWLRQ DV ZHOO DVinterventional pain management.
How It Works:IMS stimulates both the muscle and thenerve, according to Dr. Centeno. When the stretch receptorLQ WKH PXVFOH LV VWLPXODWHG LW SURGXFHV D UHH[ UHOD[DWLRQ
as well as an electrical response within the muscle to makethe nerve function normally again. The needle also causes a
small injury to the muscle, he added, which draws blood tothe area and helps to initiate the natural healing process.
Cost:IMS treatments are done once a week for 5 to 10weeks and cost about $50-60 per treatment. Many insurance
companies will pay for this treatment up to a certain amountper injury per year.
PROLOTHERAPY WITH DEXTROSE
According to Dr. Centeno, prolotherapy is most often usedfor tendon problems such as tennis elbow. It involvesinjections in the region of tendons or ligaments with a
dextrose (sugar) solution. Prolotherapy might be used ifIMS is unsuccessful, he said.
How It Works:The dextrose solution, which is dilutedwith water or an anesthetic solution, causes irritation tothe injured tissues, signaling the body to initiate a healing
process.
Cost: Prolotherapy can cost from $100-200 per treatment, with many people needing 3 to 6 treatments, and is usually
not covered by insurance. ii

ATHLETES & PAIN PILL USAGEAccording to a study published in Drug and AlcoholDependence, retired NFL players misuse opioid painmedications such as Oxycontin, Vicodin and Percocet ata rate more than four times that of the general population, thought to be because players misused painkillers duringtheir NFL careers.
The extreme physical wear and tear that serious athletessustain can cause a number of injuries and chronic painconditions that lead to the use and misuse of opioidpain medications. Whether taking too much of a painkilleror taking it for too long of a period of time, its easy tobecome either physically dependent or addicted to thesemedications. And when athletes become addicted to painmedications and the prescription runs out, they sometimesturn to street drugs even a more readily available streetdrug such as heroin often with drastic consequences. While the vast majority of people prescribed opiatepainkillers do not become dependent or addicted to them,it can happen more easily than you may think. Heres
how to decrease your risk, according to Harvard MedicalSchool:
Limit the use of an opioid to no more than 7 days.Using one formore than 30 days can lead to dependence.
Take the medicat ion exactly as prescr ibed.If you try to reduceaddiction risk by cutting back on the medicine and waitinguntil the pain gets unbearable, it can backfire. The memoryof how bad the pain got and the relief you experiencefrom taking the painkiller can actually increase your risk ofbecoming addicted.
If you need pain medication for longer than a week, talk to yourdoctorabout regular checkups to assess whether the medicationis still needed and if there are other options available to
you.MS&F
PLATELET RICH PLASMAAND STEM CELL THERAPYBoth platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy, like
prolotherapy, are delivered through a needle. And according
to Dr. Wei, these treatments, which utilize the bodys own
cellular growth and healing factors to heal damaged tissue,
are the wave of the future. They are used for rotator cuff
tears, Achilles tendon injuries and even ACL injuries.
How It Works:PRP, which has been used for about 15years in professional athletic injuries, is an injection of an
ultraconcentrated form of your own blood, said Dr. Wei.
Blood is drawn from your vein and then spun down in a
FHQWULIXJH WR REWDLQ D KLJKHU FRQFHQWUDWLRQ RI SODWHOHWV OOHG
with growth and healing factors. Then, using imaging techniques, a needle is placed intothe defective ligament or tendon, and the area is peppered
(multiple small punctures), then the platelets are injected,
resulting in natural healing both from the needle injury itself
as well as the growth factors in the platelets. For more serious injuries that dont respond to PRP, stemcell therapy, which uses either your own stem cells from
your bone marrow or fat cells, or those from a healthy donoror umbilical cord blood, can be delivered to the injured
area in much the same way as PRP therapy. Stem cells are
blank slate cells, said Wei. They can become any cell you
want them to be.
Cost:The cost of PRP and stem cell therapy varies, depending upon the area to be treated and the number
of injections needed. PRP ranges from $300 to $750 per
injection, while stem cell therapy costs about $750-$2,650
or more. At present, these therapies are not reimbursed
by insurance. But insurance coverage at some point is
a foregone conclusion, said Dr. Centeno. Many studies
have shown that dollar for dollar these procedures are less
expensive than traditional surgery. This doesnt even include
the long-term costs associated with continued care for re-
injury, surgical complications and arthritis.MS&F

Youve heard it before; maybe youve even said it yourself that athlete youre playing against was born with good genes.Hes genetically gifted and even if you gave the game your all,hes predisposed to be better. Turns out, while being active ingeneral at a young age is good, the gene theory isnt exactlytrue. There are a few things that are pretty resistant to traininglike flat out top speed, but almost every other athletic trait can be
improved, said David Epstein, author of The New York TimesBestseller, The Sports Gene. These skills are all built up throughpractice that mimics game-time situations.
Repetition through practice is key. You want to train your bodyto perform efficient movement patterns specific to your sport oractivity, said Curtis Williams, NASM-CPT and former pro footballplayer. Your body will adapt and begin to do these movementsnaturally.
Self-regulatory behavior is important, too. Going to a drivingrange and just hitting a bunch of shots isnt as productive as beingfocused and making quality drives. Assessing your performancemore frequently and wanting to better yourself is a necessary traitin a good athlete. Ready to step up your game? Use our experts tips to helpimprove these athletic traits.

this theory worked well for the Dutch, and more and more
evidence is coming out in support of polarized training.
RECOVERY
With the numerous hours of training plus actual game
time, athletes are putting a lot of beating on their bodies.
Giving your body the proper recovery it needs, starting with
even just stretching, is so important to be able to continue
to perform at an elite level. Supplements and certainingredients in supplements can also help your body bounce
back faster. Beta-alanine is a great option to take because
it reduces the lactic acid in your muscles, said Scott Herkes,

skin a prickly sensation, but that tends to go away once you
start working out. Beta-alanine and a good isolate protein
can really help you after a grueling workout to be ready togo again the next day.MS&F
IMPROVING VERTICAL HEIGHT
Many jumpers who start with a run, tend to
begin their jump too low. Its important to
take a really long second to last step and
a short last step, said Epstein. If thats
not intuitive for a jumper, you have to learn
to do it and learn how to transfer that
energy. A lot of trainers will have athletes
jump over and over again, until they get to
a point where they arent going any higher,
or they end up breaking momentum.
Lower body strength is important as well.

MAXCHAMP By David Calhoun, 2013 MaxForm Life Challenge Champion
In the last month I have seen so
much heart and positivity from those
around me and in the Max Muscle
community. I get so motivated when I
see people overcoming giant obstacles
in their lives and always pushing
to be better people than they were
yesterday.
It all started with my dad's (David
Calhoun Sr.) injury. He cut his hand
very bad. He had to have surgery and
is currently going through rehab for
recovery. This injury would darn near
stop anyone, but not my dad. He just
adapted to the situation and made the
best of it. So he changed his workouts
and not only did he adapt but he
overcame the old man is working
out harder than ever and screaming
his saying, "PMA" (positive mental
attitude) every step of the way! I'm
blessed to have come from such a
strong man.
Shortly after dad hurt his hand, I
strained my back and my trainer said
I could not lift for a while. Blasphemy!
I became very frustrated only doing
cardio, stretching and rolling out every
day. So I called up my friend Cory
Jackson (Fayetteville, NC Max Muscle).
I knew with Cory being a powerlifter
he would understand my frustration
and could give me some solid advice
and motivation. Cory told me he had a
patellar tendon tear. The doctors told
him it would be one year before a full
recovery.
Taking weights from a beast like
&RU\ LV OLNH WHOOLQJ D VK QRW WR VZLP
I asked Cory what he did to keep his
sanity and his response was, "I worked
on my weak areas and did the best
that I could with what my body would
allow." It was so motivating to know
that someone else was going through

something far worse than what I was
going through and still had a smile on
his face and motivation in his voice.
Talking to Cory got me so motivated
the rest of the week. I did my cardio
with a smile on my face and felt
silly for ever feeling frustrated. I'm
blessed to have such a strong-
willed friend.
Also this week I made a new
friend. Her name is Trisha Weltz
and she is in the MaxForm Life
Challenge contest this year. She
is kicking butt. She has lost 30
pounds since December and 50
pounds total since she began
her weight-loss journey.
With Trisha's son Hunter
cheering her on and being
her motivation, nothing can
stop this woman. She has
an amazing story to tell,
too. Trisha may be one the
most inspirational, positive
and upbeat people I have
ever had the pleasure of
talking to. Hearing someone
so positive and upbeat
made me think that maybe
I should add a little more
positivity to my life.
Talking to Trisha also
made me realize there is
always room to grow.
This group of people
has motivated me to
the point of no end
and made me hungry
for more on my everyday
journey to be better than I was
yesterday.
A big thank you to my Dad, Cory
Jackson and Trisha Weltz for all the
love, encouragement and motivation!

MAXPRO-Consuming enough protein eachday can be the difference between getting results and
not. MaxPro is comprised of a blend of whey protein
concentrate, whey protein isolate and casein protein.
Whey protein is an excellent source of glutamine,
glycine and the branched chain amino acids leucine,
isoleucine and valine. Whey protein transits the
stomach quickly for fast absorption by the intestines,
making it ideal to consume post-exercise to speed recovery. Rich
amounts of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, are contained in wheyprotein. Glutathione is involved heavily in metabolic detoxification, and
levels of glutathione have been shown to decrease with exercise.
Peptides from whey protein have also shown to enhance the activity of
our immune system.
Recently, whey protein has received attention for being effective in
weight loss and reducing body fat. A newly published research study
had this to say about whey: Healthy, overweight and obese individuals
participated in the double-blind, randomized clinical trial ingesting a
whey protein shake twice daily for 23 weeks. Participants were provided
no dietary advice and continued to consume their free-choice diets
throughout the study period. At the end of the 23 weeks, subjects in the
whey protein group lost statistically significantly more body weight, fat
free mass and waist
circumference compared tothe other groups consuming
a similar soy protein or an
isoenergetic amount of
carbohydrate (placebo).
Casein protein comprises 80
percent of the protein found
in milk and does not clear
the stomach as fast as
whey protein. It is a slower
digesting protein, often
referred to as a time-
released protein, making
it a good choice to add towhey protein and to
consume prior to bedtime
when you will be in a
fasting state.
GLUTAMATRIX-Glutamatrix is formulated with three different sources of glutamine, each easyto use and providing individual benefits for our body. GlutaMatrix helps to speed recovery by enhancing
immunity, accelerating muscle repair and improving brain function. Here are some highlights:
s L-glutamine is easily absorbed into the blood stream, allowing for quick absorption and
immune functions 'LUTAMINE PEPTIDES ARE ABSORBED INTACT AND TRIGGER PROTEIN SYNTHESIS REPAIRING AND RECOVERING
our muscles
s .!CETYL,'LUTAMINE REPLENISHES BRAIN NEUROTRANSMITTERS AFTER DIFFICULT WORKOUTS
s 'LUTA-ATRIX ALSO INCLUDES GRAMS OF CARBOHYDRATES OF THOSE COMING FROM DEXTROSE WHICH IS
important for fast and optimal absorption.
VIT-ACELL ENERGY-Vitaminsand minerals play essential roles in most metabolic
processes in our body. They act as anti-oxidants,
co-enzymes and catalysts playing roles in a
number of chemical reactions. Vit-Acell Energy,
which comes in a delicious citrus flavor, is a natural
liquid nutrition supplement that provides 100
percent or more of 13 essential vitamins and
essential minerals. It also contains a natural juice blend
loaded with antioxidants, 100 mg of colloidal minerals andenergizing herbal extracts such as green tea, ginkgo bi loba,
grape seed extract, ginseng, citrus bioflavonoid extract, rutin
powder and herperidin extract. Vit-Acell Energy also provides
100 mg of caffeine coming from green coffee bean extract,
guarana extract, yerba mate extract and kola extract making
it a perfect choice for your morning multi-vitamin. Taking a
liquid vitamin offers even more benefits such as:
s "ETTER !BSORPTION s 3UPER #ONCENTRATED
s %ASILY TO 3WALLOW s "ETTER 5TILIZATION
ESSENTIAL OMEGA-Most ofus know by now how important it is to supplementwith essential fatty acids. Essential Omega is
