Shalom B’nai Israel Family,

We know exactly what to do when children do not respond to what we are saying: we

stand in front of them and motion for them to take off the headphones or to remove

the buds from their ears, or turn off the television, or the electronic device they may

be using. We hear from their friends that the scene is much the same in other homes.

With humorous irony, it might be pointed out that the same parents who complain

that their children never listen might also complain that their children are always listening, and hear what they are

not supposed to hear!

Jewish Heritage is based on the ability to listen: SH’MA YISRA-EL— Listen, People Israel! At the foot of Mount

Sinai, God asks B’nai Israel, the children of Israel, if they are ready to accept the Torah. Their response is

succinct: NA’ASEH v’NEESH-MA—We accept it with the promise to listen!

The Torah very wisely teaches us that listening does not necessarily involve noise, or even sounds. After promising

to listen, they declare to Moses that they are not capable of hearing anything more from God. The Rabbis of the

Talmud ask: What made them change their mind? They answer that the people were overwhelmed when they heard

the first letter of the first word in the first commandment: the silent letter, Alef.

One of the most significantly silent moments in Jewish religious life comes on Rosh ha-Shanah when the karyan,

the person who reads out the Shofar notes, calls the signal for the Shofar to be sounded: T’ki-a! In the split second

between that call and the sounding of the Shofar, there is a quiet in the sanctuary that is as deep and deafening as

the silence at Sinai.

A student recently asked me, “How can we listen to what God says if God doesn’t have a mouth?” I shared with

this child the story of Elijah who understood that God does not speak with us through the rumbling of an

earthquake or the crash of lightening, but through Kol D’Mama Daka: the still small Voice within us. If we want to

hear the Voice of God, then we must listen to the inner talk that takes place between the mind and the heart. We

must be open to hearing the Voice of Conscience within us. Rabbi David Wolpe translates Kol D’Mama Daka not

as the still small Voice, but as the thin Voice of Silence.

We must take the time to turn off our stream of rationalizations, our thoughts of everything we need to do, and our

blaming others for our lot in life, and then to listen to what we know is good and right. Perhaps that is why a major

observance of Shavuot is the study of Torah late at night when we are more likely to hear the conversation that took

place between God and the Jewish People, and the continuation of that conversation taking place within our own

souls today.

WWF—Wise Words from Wolintz-Fields

On Passover we were freed from slavery in Egypt and we walked into the Wilderness; on Shavuot we were given the

Ten Commandments with its opening silent Alef, “I am your Eternal God who brought you out of the land of Egypt.”

At Sinai we promised Neeshma—we will listen—and the rest is history as we set out for the Promised Land. Each

Shavuot we repeat that promise as we joyfully carry the responsibility of Torah on our journey forward through life.

Enjoy that journey, with Torah in your life every day, filled with great joy, health, and happiness!

L’Shalom,

Rabbi Ellen S. Wolintz-Fields

A M e s s a g e F r o m O u r P r e s i d e n t … . The past three years as president have been fun, depressing, exciting, disappointing and encouraging, but never dull. I have so many ideas for this article, but as I have tried to do with my High Holiday Appeal addresses, I want to engage you, entertain you and thank you. First, it has been my pleasure to work with dedicated, diligent and compassionate individuals that make up our Board, Executive Board, Committee Chairs, Past President Leadership and other volunteers. Without them, we could not have achieved so much on a daily basis, to keep B’nai Israel strong. For example, at the May Board meeting the Board approved the following:

The 2014-2105 Budget with NO dues or tuition increase. For the second consecutive year, the Board is proposing to maintain dues and tuition charges to our members, while controlling spending, without reducing services and programing. But once again, we need all members to satisfy their financial obligations in a timely manner to succeed.

The Board approved the replacement of our irrigation well, that failed last year and must be operational before the summer. The cost of the well replacement is $5,000 and will be paid from the maintenance fee fund and not the operating account. The main reason for the $95/year maintenance fee – please pay it!

The Board approved the installation of a centralized intercom system, to be installed in all the classrooms and chapel, so that there can be communication to the main office for daily use and safety/security reasons. This is an essential tool in the security of our building and safety of our children. The total cost of this system is $2,600 and will be paid from the maintenance fee fund and not the operating account (unless a donation is received for the purchase). This is another reason why it is extremely important to pay the $95/year maintenance fee.

The Board approved the hiring of an assistant for the Principal (Rabbi) for the 2014-2015 school year and I am happy to say it is Max Silverstein, one of our own! Max will be graduating from Toms River North High School and our Hebrew High School this spring and has decided to stay local for college, so the Rabbi and Board of Education jumped at the opportunity to increase his role in the education of our children. Max has been working with the Talmud Torah this year, continues to tutor and is an asset to our program.

No decision at the Board meetings is not without discussion, controversy at times and understanding; so I am grateful for all of their hard work to keep B’nai Israel the gem of the Jersey Shore. It is always dangerous to thank individuals because you always forget someone, but I feel there are several people, I must recognize.

Glenn Jacobs, Ruth Gunzberger, Ruth Kerr, Dennis Lyons, Bob Foxman, and Steve Pardes – our active past presidents who had my back when I accepted the nomination as president and have been my guides over the past three years. B’nai Israel is extremely lucky to have such dedicated leaders, because even though they are past presidents, they are current leaders.

Allysa Weintraub who reluctantly assumed the role of Board of Education Chairperson and who took the lead in recreating our education system – one of my major initiatives.

Marc Bunis, Michele Pardes, Shira Meyer, Fred Weil, Muriel Levine, Allen Schecter and Joel Kurtz who served on the Executive Board during my 3 years and supported me every step of the way. We are lucky to have their dedication and I hope to sit on the “couch” as they continue to lead B’nai Israel.

Joanne Gethard, Jonathan Fields and Lauren Rosen – As I attended USCJ events as president and other synagogue leaders saw I was from Toms River, they all would comment on the strength of our youth programming. When I told them we do it all with volunteer leadership, they became extremely jealous. If you don’t realize the hard work, dedication and selflessness of our youth leadership, then you don’t know our leaders and programing. My huge thank you to Joanne and Jonathan, who give up their time and sanity, to be with our kids, keep our kids safe and run fantastic programs – Thank you!

Mitch, Christine, Laurie and James keep our building standing, food in our bellies and have brought a large amount of organization into our office. I am also very proud to say “they do it with a smile.”

Rabbi and Hazzan – I am grouping you together, only because this article is getting too long, but together and separately, you are B’nai Israel. I continue to say that as president, you see the “behind the scenes” of synagogue life and maybe it takes a little away from sitting in the pews, similar to working behind the scenes of a play; but you have educated me every step of the way. I have enjoyed our frequent meetings, but more importantly, I have enjoyed you sharing your bema with me.

There are so many other names going through my head, so please if I did not name you, I did not forget you – thank you! Last but not least, Bob Van Bochove who will be the next president and I am confident, will be a great leader. I am so excited that Bob agreed to be president and I believe he will get the same support as I received and will continue the fiscal responsibility with a “Jewish” touch. The job is demanding, but getting to know Bob through the years, he has always tackled demanding jobs. I thank him, wish him the best of luck and he should know, “I have his back.”

MESSAGE FROM MEN’S CLUB

As warm summer months arrive at the Jersey Shore, Men’s Club is busy arranging activities and events for the 2014-2015 year. Although our Calendar-of-Events may slow down a bit for a short time during July and August, have no fear, ‘cause we’re still here! And speaking of still being here: I have agreed to stay on for a third year--the good news that I have to announce is that Steve Pardes will be Men’s Club Co-President with me…I’m really looking forward to partnering with him for 2014-2015…thanks for your willingness to help, Steve! By now, you probably know the names of the CBI students who won Men’s Club’s “First Annual Student Essay Contest”… having read all of the entries, I must honestly say that I did not envy our vol-unteer judges the task of choosing Contest winners, because all of our participants did such a great job. Needless to say, we’re very proud of our students, each of whom was presented with a Certificate-of-Participation. Winners were presented with Barnes & Noble Gift Certificate prizes on Sunday, May 18, after Talmud Torah Final Assembly. Winners’ names, photos and winning essays will be published in the summer Kolenu issue—not to be missed! Many thanks go to Rabbi, Hazzan, Hebrew School teachers, and Contest judges (Sandy Welsher and Fran Kirschner)—your expertise and support for the Essay Contest are greatly appreciated! I also want to thank FJMC Regional Vice-President (and soon-to-be-President), Joel Kurtz for putting together May 5

th’s

“Students for Israel” seminar. The goal of this ongoing, yearly, program is to prepare our students to be proponents for Israel in situations where they may encounter anti-Semitism on campus and throughout their lives. We invite you to join us for these upcoming Men’s Club activities and events:

June 3 – (Tuesday @ 7:30) – Men’s Club and Sisterhood Officers Installation at Shavuot services, followed by a delicious Ice Cream Social

June 6th to 8

th – FJMC Regional Retreat, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania…if interested, contact Joel Kurtz ASAP

June 18 – (Wednesday @ 6:00 p.m.) – FJMC’s Presidents’ Dinner…see announcement and details in this issue.

P.S.: If you haven’t already done so, it’s not too late to make a contribution to Men’s Club’s “Yellow Candle Holocaust Project,” so please take a moment to send your check to the CBI office, attention: “Candle”…THANK YOU! I wish everyone a wonderful, fun-filled summer! Hy

A M e s s a g e F r o m O u r P r e s i d e n t … . C o n t i n u e d So as I close, I will tell all of you that the past three years have solidified one lesson in life we all should remember – “Life is precious.” I have said good-bye to many members and friends who left the world of the living and I have tried to comfort them. Each eulogy, each story, each memory, reminded me that we only get one shot at life and we should make the most of it. At the same time it reminded me to say “I Love You” to those closest to you. As I thank my family, including my fiancé Amie, my daughter Sara and my step-daughters Andrea and Jessica for their support and love, I leave you with a true story of how you must say “I love you” because you never know what God has in store for you. In April, 2005 I had the opportunity to travel to Florida with my best friend (since Gan), Jeff Kornblum and pick up his new car, and then drive back to New Jersey. I specifically remember driving through North Carolina on April 12

th and calling my

mom since she had been feeling under the weather. During our telephone conversation I learned that her doctor was treating her for the flu and that in a few days she should be better. Our call ended and we said good-bye. Jeff immediately “jumped down my throat” and said “why didn’t you say ‘I Love You?’” I responded, “I don’t know; I just didn’t.” He said, “You should always tell your mom you love her before you say good-bye.” So, I called back and told my mom “I loved her.” Little did I know that on April 14

th my mom would enter the hospital and pass away in 34 days of pancreatic cancer. Jeff was right,

we should always tell those we love and appreciate how we feel, because “Life is precious” and we do not know what plans God has for us. Please continue to reach out to me at home or via email at [email protected]. Thank you for your trust, support and patience. Philip I. Brilliant President

Poignant Points from the Principal

Shalom B'nai Israel Family, It is hard to believe that the Talmud Torah school year has come to completion, as has my first year as principal. It has been a very rewarding year. I want to thank several people who have made it a very meaningful and fulfilling school year. Allysa Weintraub, the chairperson of our Board of Education has been a huge help to me and our entire staff. She is a wonderful partner in creating a nurturing educational environment at our Congregation B'nai Israel Talmud Torah, Allysa was always available for me to talk to and bounce ideas off of, and to receive important feedback from. I look forward to working in partnership with Allysa for many years to come. Thank you to our entire Board of Education for all of their help, guidance and encouragement. Thank you to our phenomenal staff of teachers for their dedication, devotion, and time spent preparing lessons to educate our students and keep their interest and nurture their love of God, Torah, and Israel. I extend my gratitude to Morah Judy Kessler, our Gan and Alef teacher, Morah Ingrid Nadell, our Bet teacher and my Assistant - thank you for everything, to Morah Judy Rosenbloom, our Gimel and Dalet teacher, to Morah Hadar Lewis, our Heh teacher, to Morah Renee Kitay, our Vav teacher and Hebrew tutor, to Hazzan Steven Walvick, our Vav teacher, to Moreh Joel Weissglass, our Zayin teacher, and to Max Silverstein, our Hebrew tutor, and Rabbi Deborah Miller, our Junior Congregation Facilitator. In addition, thank you to our volunteers in the Talmud Torah - to Ilana Rotem, Russell Shapiro, Haley Wiko and Devon Shapiro. A special thank you to all of our Talmud Torah students for their enthusiasm and devotion to Talmud Torah and their adherence to my snack time guidelines. And special thank you to our snack providers - to Joanne Gethard for buying snacks for USY to sell and to Steven and Matthew Glassoff, Jarrett Weiss, Molly Berger and all the other USY’ers for coming to Talmud Torah to sell snack. A huge thank you to our parents for making sure your students arrived to Talmud Torah on time and stayed until the end of the day, and you made it a priority in their lives. This conscientiousness shows- our students learned this year. Our students know how to read. Their Hebrew reading skills have improved; attendance improved, and students had smiles on their faces during their time at Talmud Torah. If I forgot to thank you - I truly apologize - but thank you! I thank the Congregation B'nai Israel Board and the Congregation B'nai Israel Board of Education for putting your confidence in me to be the principal of the Congregation B'nai Israel Talmud Torah. It is a lot of work, but I love it. It is so fulfilling seeing the students each week. Hearing them read Hebrew, sing Hatikvah, and instill in them the love of God, Torah and Israel. And working with our wonderful Board of Education - a group of incredibly dedicated volunteers and our amazing teachers and devoted teenage volunteers, our energetic students- it doesn't get better than this! I look forward to many more years of living Jewish values, loving Israel, learning Hebrew. I look forward to the next Talmud Torah school year and seeing you over the summer Kayitz Nayim - A pleasant summer to all Rabbi Ellen S. Wolintz-Fields

MEN’S CLUB CONGREGATION B’NAI ISRAEL PRESENTS “STAND-FOR-ISRAEL” SEMINAR By Megina Mittleberg

“At B’nai Israel, we take our commitment to CBI’s young adults and our commitment to Israel very seriously.” The CBI’s Men’s Club’s yearly “Stand-for-Israel” seminar, held on May 5

th, is one of the ways in

which we reinforce a strong bond between our Hebrew School students and Israel” says Regional Federation of Jewish Men’s Club’s President, Joel Kurtz. The focus of the “Stand-for-Israel” seminar is to foster love for Israel and emphasize its importance in Jewish life, to raise students’ awareness, and to facilitate their ability to deal with anti-Semitism, especially as it presently exists on college campuses. The film, “Israel Inside,” which follows the transformation of the State of Israel from its origins to its present status as world leader in cutting-edge technology “really impressed and amazed me and my classmates,” according to one student. Guest speaker, Ferne Hassan, Associate Director of the “Stand With Us…Supporting Israel Around The World,” Philadelphia Chapter, spoke to students, their families and CBI members about the groundbreaking work her organization is doing. “This innovative program provides our young adults with the support and resources they need in order to handle difficult situations they may encounter at school, which is especially important for Hebrew High graduates who are going off to college,” says CBI Men’s Club President, Hy Mittleberg.

SHAVUOT 5774 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

A Pilgrim Festival Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks (Chag Ha-Shavuot in Hebrew), is so called because it is celebrated seven weeks (Shavuot) and one day after the second day of Passover. The seven weeks between Passover and Shavuot are known as the Omer. Various alternative names for Shavuot are Chag Hakatzir (Harvest Festival), and Yom Habikkurim (Day of the First Fruits). Shavuot, along with Passover and Sukkot, is one of the three major Pilgrimage Festivals in the Jewish calendar. The pilgrims who came to Jerusalem on Shavuot in Temple times brought with them the first Fruits of the wheat crop that was harvested at that time of year (May-June). Loaves of bread were made from the wheat, and two loaves were offered as a sacrifice on the altar. Pentecost Because Shavuot is celebrated on the fiftieth day after the advent of Passover, it has been called Pentecost, a Greek word meaning A fiftieth (day) after Passover. The Hebrew date is the sixth of Sivan. A Two-day Diaspora Holiday The Bible calls for the observance of Shavuot as a one-day holiday, but because notification that the New Moon had been sighted did not always reach the far-flung Diaspora communities on time, a second day was added to Shavuot (and the other major festivals) to avoid the possibility of celebrating the holiday on the wrong day. Akdamut and Azharot Akdamut, meaning Introduction, is an Aramaic poetic prayer (piyut) read on Shavuot as an introduction to the Torah reading of the day, which describes the events that transpired from the Exodus to the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. Only Ashkenazim recite Akdamut. To honor the Torah on Shavuot, Sephardim recite a piyut entitled Azharot, which includes a listing of the 613 positive and negative commandments (mitzvot) of the Torah. Shavuot and Revelation Although in Biblical times Shavuot was an agricultural holiday, in Talmudic times it became associated with the Revelation on Mount Sinai. The Rabbis noted that the agricultural holiday of Shavuot and the events that took place on Mount Sinai occurred in the same season of the year. Torah-study sessions were inaugurated, and Shavuot became a holiday on which to affirm ones loyalty to the Torah and the Jewish way of life. Time of the Giving of the Torah The third-century C.E. talmudic scholar Rabbi Eleazar was probably the first to refer to Shavuot as Zeman Matan Toratenu, A Time of the Giving of the Torah. He noted that on Shavuot it is important to rejoice with good wine and food in celebration of the Revelation on Mount Sinai.

Shavuot Study Period—Tikkun Leyl Shavuot The Zohar, written by the second-century mystic Rabbi Simon bar Yochai, says that it behooves a person to study Torah on the night that Israel received the Torah. In the 16

th century Solomon Alkabetz of Safed introduced the custom of preparing to

celebrate Shavuot by staying up all night to study Torah. The tradition of studying in preparation for the holiday, known as Tikkun Shavuot (Preparing for Shavuot), is still observed in synagogues in a variety of forms, but a few people do stay up for the entire night. One of the books used on this night, known as Tikkun Leyl Shavuot, is an anthology of readings assembled from Biblical, Talmudic, and Kabbalistic sources. This year at Congregation B’nai Israel our Tikkun Leyl Shavuot with an Ice Cream Social will take place on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, immediately following Erev Shavuot Services, which begin at 7:30pm, and will include Men’s Club and Sisterhood Officers Installation. A Jerusalem Tradition In Jerusalem today it is customary for those who have spent the night of Shavuot studying in the local synagogue or other places of assembly to go to the Kotel, the Western Wall, at sunrise for the morning (Shacharit) prayers. Book of Ruth The Book of Ruth is read in the synagogue on Shavuot - the holiday of the giving of the Torah - because Ruth showed her loyalty to the Torah by accepting Judaism. In some synagogues it is read before the Torah reading; in others it is read before the afternoon (Minchah) service.

King David and Ruth According to legend, King David was born and died on the same day, the 6

th of Sivan, which is Shavuot. Ruth is a direct ancestor

of David, and this is another reason, some say, for reading the Book of Ruth on Shavuot.

SHAVUOT FOODS

Dairy Foods on Shavuot It is traditional to serve dairy foods and honey on Shavuot because of the phrase “honey and milk under their lips,” found in the Song of Songs (4:11), which implies that the words of the Torah energize our spirits as honey and milk do our bodies.

Two Special Challot Two special Challot (“Challahs”) are baked for Shavuot. As there were two breads offered in the Temple, so Jews eat two Challot. It is a special feature of Shavuot to place a braid in the shape of a ladder on top of the bread. In Hebrew, letters all have numerical values assigned to them; the word for ladder in Hebrew, “Sulam,” adds up to the same numbers as “Sinai.”

Cheese Blintzes and Kreplach Two cheese blintzes, representing the two tablets of the Ten Commandments received by Moses on Mount Sinai, are traditionally eaten on Shavuot. Triangular cheese-filled kreplach are also a favorite Shavuot delicacy. The triangle shape represents the three parts of the Bible - Torah, Prophets, and Holy Writings. Borekes Borekes, cheese-filled pastries, are a favorite Sephardic Shavuot treat, particularly among Jews of Turkish origin.

SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR MAKING SHAVUOT MEANINGFUL 1. This is an appropriate season for you and your family to begin reading the Bible on a weekly schedule. 2. This is also the time to begin thinking seriously about registering for a course in Hebrew and/or the Bible for the coming Fall. 3. On Shavuot, one should make every attempt to attend Synagogue Services. 4. Read the story of Ruth from the Bible to your family as part of the Shavuot Eve dinner. 5. You might encourage the children in your family to plant a garden or even a window box plant. 6. To enjoy the festival spirit, you should do all your shopping before the onset of the holiday. 7. Decorate your table with a Shavuot motif, such as summery flowers, a lovely tablecloth and your best silverware. Bring out your polished silver Kiddush cups. 8. Here are some suggestions for a table centerpiece: Arrangement of greens around a Torah scroll. Individual baskets of fruit. Small books between bookends. 9. Like Shabbat, you should light the candles, recite the Kiddush, say the Hamotzi, and chant the Grace After Meals (Birkat Hamazon). 10. It is customary, just before lighting the candles for the holiday, to put some coins in a Tzedakah (charity) box. The children should be invited to participate in this philanthropic experience. 11. The blessings over the holiday candles are: Baruch Attah Adonai, Elohenu Melech HaOlam, Asher Kid-Shanu B’mitzvotav V’tzivanu L’hadlik Ner Shel Yom Tov. Blessed are you, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with Your commandments, and commanded us to kindle the lights of the Festival of Shavuot. Baruch Attah Adonai, Elohenu Melech HaOlam, She-He-Che-Yanu, V’key’manu V’hi-Gi-Anu, Lazman Hazeh . Blessed are you, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, Who has blessed us with life and enabled us to celebrate this Festival Season. 12.Traditional Shavuot foods should be served. This would be delicacies like blintzes, noodle pudding and cheesecake. 13. The proper greeting for the festival is Chag Sameach, which means "A Happy Holiday," or in Yiddush, Gut Yontof, which means "Good Day."

Claudia Danielle Morgan

Bat Mitzvah

6/7/2014

Claudia was born May 18th, 2001 shortly after her family moved to Toms River. She is the youngest of 3, with an older brother Jake and older sister Lexi Claudia has been a student of Congregation B'nai Israel's Hebrew School program since she was 3 years old. Through these past 10 years she has learned so much and is very excited to mark her Bat Mitzvah this June. Besides her Hebrew studies Claudia has been an Honor student the last two years in Toms River Intermediate North School. She enjoys Dance class and competitions, snowboarding, going to the beach in the summer and spending time with her family and friends. We are very proud of her ! Mazel Tov! We Love you Claudia, Mom, Dad, Jacob and Alexis

Aleene Marcella Fried

Bat Mitzvah

6/28/2014

Aleene Marcella Fried is a seventh grade student at Intermediate North. She is in the Kitah Zayin class and is also involved in Kadima. Aleene has been studying very hard for her Bat Mitzvah over the past months, but in her free time she enjoys playing volleyball for her school team, singing in chorus, and spending time with her friends and family. She loves playing with her two dogs, Triton and Keepah, and her many bunnies. Some of her favorite memories are of her family vacations to the Atlantis, playing under the hot sun with all of her cousins, brothers and sister. Aleene’s dream career is to become a fashion designer, creating new styles of clothing for doctors and nurses. The Fried family is very proud of Aleene for all of the dedication she had put into her Bat Mitzvah and we look forward to celebrating with her on this special day. Congratulations Aleene!!!!! With all our love, Mom, Dad, Matthew, Edward and Lillian

We are looking for volunteers to deliver meals to homebound seniors in the Toms River area.

Meal pick up is at Congregation B’nai Israel around 11:30 am. Delivery is mainly in the senior communities in the area. It takes less than two hours to pack the meals and deliver them. Training will be held for the volunteers that have not delivered before. Directions are given to all the homes. The homebound seniors that receive these meals look forward to seeing you come with their meal. This is more fun if done with two persons. MEMBERSHIP MOMENT We’re happy to announce that the following members have recently formed a new CBI Membership Committee: Megina Mittleberg Membership Chair Bob Foxman Irwin Natter Terri Gibbor Michael Perks Alice Pomaski Hy Mittleberg Sandi Shapiro As regards membership, the group has decided to not focus on “the numbers,” (although important), but to, instead, focus on “R & R,” Recruitment & Retention, which we’ve learned much about from our mentor, Phil Brilliant; these aspects of Membership relate more appropriately to the ACTUAL FUNCTION of the Membership Committee than do numbers. There was much to discuss at the Committee’s first meeting on May 21 and appointment of various Committee Chairs was not one of the topics the Committee was able to address at this time, but will be handled at the next Membership meeting. The Committee plans to be proactive and energetic in both its pursuit of increasing membership and in enhancing the “CBI experience” for new members. The new Membership Committee hopes to receive the cooperation, help and support of both CBI leadership and congregants.

We never know when the end of life will come. The only thing for sure is that it will be at a very inconvenient time. Why should your family members have to quickly decide where you are to be buried? Why should they have to quickly choose a funeral home for you?

You should have the honor of a funeral service in the synagogue or in a chapel, where those who knew you will accord you the dignity you deserve. But if you do not arrange for this during your lifetime, maybe your family members will say “Let’s do a graveside service—it’s cheaper.” And then, what if the day of your funeral is very rainy or hot or cold? Then they will say “Hurry up and get it over with.” Is that what you would want? Certainly not.

End-of-life decisions should be for you to make—not anyone else. You deserve to choose your own burial place and funeral arrangements. Don’t put this off and leave it to others after you are gone. Contact Fred Weil, our Cemetery Chairman, who will give you guidance in making these decisions for yourself. Your family will be eternally grateful.
