From that first rush of a mighty wind and the descending tongues of fire, the disciples understood that their experience of God was a continuation of the resurrection. Jesus had explained in advance that his ascension was to be a preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit. But the experience itself left little doubt, because the Holy Spirit pulsed with the same resurrection life.

That new life continues unabated to this day. Some of the manifestations of God in those early days seem incredible, and perhaps there was some exaggerating as the stories were told and retold. Nevertheless, the reality of God is as real today as before, and the vitality of the Holy Spirit is as lively now as then.

So we are challenged to recognize and claim this disconcerting and yet electrifying presence of the risen Lord in the power of the Holy Spirit. How is it that the Spirit of God animates the collective Body of Christ, which is the Church? What does it mean that our hearts dance with the flames of the Spirit? The season of Pentecost is a good time to discern what difference the Holy Spirit makes

in our lives, and we can begin by considering generosity.

The giving of the Holy Spirit makes the generosity of God abundantly clear. For what is the Holy Spirit but the immeasurable outpouring of the infinite and the eternal? The image Paul uses in Romans 5:5 pictures “God’s love being poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” I imagine someone tipping a bottomless container and pouring out a waterfall, a vast, endless quantity of fresh and life-giving water. If the Holy Spirit were a bodily being, our hearts would instantly overflow and we would quickly drown, but the Spirit is immaterial and thus all the more unrestrained and powerful.

God gives without stint, and our response in receiving such abundant life is to do as God does: to give. The way of the cross is the way of life, and it turns out that the outpouring of the Spirit signals our way of life to be one of exuberant self-giving. Our response to God’s Pentecostal generosity is to give generously.

not only by walking the way of self-sacrifice, but by joining in fellowship with the invisible and mysterious Holy Spirit. The disciples’ experience with the Spirit led to them to describe its gifts. These lists enumerate both the effects of the Spirit, and the disciples’ responses to God’s Pentecostal gift. The most famous list is found in Galatians 5:22 where Paul writes, “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.” Notice generosity, because it is key.

The last four months at All Saints’ has been an unofficial season of Pentecost, because we have been extremely generous in giving to fully fund our ministries. We have not yet totally balanced the budget, as you will read in this Patter, but we have a manageable amount left to raise and the vestry expects additional pledges and donations to fill in the gap. The response of the parish has been wonderfully pentecostal.

However, the point of Pentecost is NOT to give toward a budget, or to give in order to provide services, and certainly not simply to give in order to receive something ourselves. The true motive for our generosity is the Holy Spirit who breathes

within, binding us together, comforting, leaping, giving utterance, healing, challenging, forgiving, sending out, inspiring, and groaning with sighs too deep for words again and again and again. Because God is so generous, giving becomes our way of life in Christ.

I am very proud of this parish, never more than during the last four months as we engaged in our mini-campaign to fully fund our ministries. Now, as we begin the long season of Pentecost,

we are ready to move on from funding a budget to focusing on God’s generosity. We are ready to continue giving generously of our time, skills, and money, because this is what we do and who we

are. God’s generosity dances like flames of fire through our giving, empowering the ministries of Christ’s Body, the Church. Our giving sets free the Holy Spirit to make a difference.

GENEROSITY

All Saints’ presents: Bach to the Future, 2012

Bach to the Future is a Summer program for youth and children in elementary and middle school grades. Carteena Robohm will be the director and Todd Samra, D.A. will be the associate director. Children and youth are invited to attend both sessions. Registration is on our website and online at: http://bit.ly/IV00Hz.

Building on seven years of talent and tradition, these two weeks offer music and fun for children and youth in kindergarten through grade eight. Each week the children and youth will sing and make music, draw, dance, explore history and language, interact with singers and instrumentalists from the Carmel Bach Festival, and even learn to cook some of J.S. Bach’s favorite foods!

Week I: July 16-20, 2012, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Special presentation at All Saints on July 22, 10:30 a.m. Cost: $150

Week II: July 23-27, 2012, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Special presentation at All Saints on July 29, 10:30 a.m. Cost: $150

Bach to the Future coincides with the Carmel Bach Festival and we are privileged to serve as one of its venues.

Restoration Plan Nearing an End

During the last six years All Saints’ has turned from a declining and aging congregation to one of growth and vitality. The diocese has supported this new beginning through a program called Restoration. The restoration covenant we entered into permits the parish to pay less than our fair share to support the ministries of the diocese, and places the parish under diocesan oversight. They require a vision and strategic plan, and annual reports on our progress. Each year we have paid a higher percentage of our fair share, and next year we will resume paying one hundred percent. Below are letters from the Board of Trustees review committee and from Bishop Mary.

May 23, 2012 The Rev. Richard B. Matters All Saints’ Episcopal Church P.O. Box 1296 Carmel, CA 93921

Dear Rick:

Congratulations to you and all the people of All Saints’! In their report to the Board of Trustees, the Restoration Review Committee summarized your 2012 restoration update as follows:

All Saints’, Carmel, continues to make progress. As with some of our other restoration churches, they have financial challenges, but in the case of All Saints’, they appear to be handle-able. All Saints’ submitted another well-written and thoughtful report, discussing in detail their achievements and challenges. The highlights are many and a few are noteworthy:

• Their ASA (Average Sunday Attendance) increased from 131 to 143 in 2011.

• They have 22 new pledging units in 2012 and are back up to their 2010 level of 100 pledging units.

• They ended 2011 with a bank debt of $23,000, the same amount they owed in 2010.

• For 2012, they lost $30,000 in income when

Father Rick retired as a teacher at All Saints’ School.

• This spring their budget took a $10,000 hit over a disagreement on how to fund the $63,000 needed to repair their balcony.

• They continue to be on target to exit the restoration program in 2013.

All Saints’ is a complex parish operating in an unusual and challenging demographic environment. Under Father Rick’s leadership, they have undertaken some touchy issues, such as reconfiguring their worship times and service content. Changes like these typically cause erosion in ASA, membership, and income, and All Saints’ has experienced all three. However, they seem to be rebounding and making good progress.

The RRC recommends that the trustees accept their update and wish them continued success.

Accompanying note from Bishop Mary:

On behalf of the Board, I commend All Saints’ on its progress. I know challenges lie ahead but there is a refreshing spirit of change flourishing at All Saints’ and you and your lay leadership are to be commended for all you’ve accomplished. I add my personal congratulations and best wishes to you and all the people of All Saints’ and pray for your continued success in the future.

Faithfully, +Mary Gray-Reeves The Rt. Rev. Mary Gray-Reeves Bishop, El Camino Real

our Worship

Sunday 5:30 p.m. Services

Evensong, a contemplative service warmed by candlelight, is celebrated the first Sunday of each month. Music is led from the organ, with prayers, and meditation. A light supper reception follows in Seccombe Hall.

Holy Communion is offered on the remaining Sundays. This candlelit service is ideal for busy people of all ages, including sports enthusiasts. Enjoy the beauty and peace as you are refreshed by the simplicity of prayers and music. Be renewed with hope to share the love of Jesus Christ in the coming week.

Father's Day

Join us in prayer and thanksgiving on June 17 for Father's Day. Offer your prayers asking God to give faith, hope, love to the living and everlasting joy to those departed with Christ.

Santa Lucia Summer Services

Invite your friends to the weekly service at the Santa Lucia Chapel of All Saints’ Parish, located at our campground next to the Big Sur River. Tell them to drive south on Highway 1 and take the first right-hand turn after the village of Big Sur.

We worship amid the redwood trees at 5:30 p.m. each Saturday in June, July, and August.

Marilyn Byrne to Share a Story of Faith

Marilyn Byrne will join Fr. Rick in presenting a sermon based on how she and her family have been following the footsteps of Jesus during her treatments for cancer. Her experience is such a heartwarming and powerful testimony of God’s faithfulness that Marilyn is writing a book about it. She will speak on June 10 at the 10:30 liturgy.

Worship: We glorify Christ by enacting liturgies steeped in beauty,

mystery, and creativity that refresh like

springs of living water.

The Baptized On the Feast of Pentecost we displayed the names of all those baptized at All Saints’ over the last one hundred years. These names are also contained in a binder located at the back of the church. Feel free to look through for specific names, or simply be amazed at our heritage of making saints by reading the 1,739 names! With this powerful display, we were reminded of the presence of the Holy Spirit and our own baptismal commissioning.

God Outdoors

Robin Denney has scheduled several camping and hiking events for the youth group this summer. The youth in middle school and high school are excited to participate and are welcome to invite relatives, friends and neighbors in grades 6 to 12. RSVP to Robin at: [email protected]

June 20: Day hike in the Big Sur land trust.

July 15-16: Big Sur Camp-out. We will leave after church on Sunday, and camp in Paul’s Meadow. The next day we’ll hike at Andrew Mollera State Park.

August 16: Day hike, Big Sur land trust or Point Lobos.

October 19-21: Diocesan youth camping trip at All Saints’ Big Sur Camp Ground

Centennial

We continue the year-long celebration of our centennial. The May 25 Pentecost Day surprises were well received, including the 50-50 bars (Creamsicles) given out after the services. All Saints’ Day School gave each student a 50-50 bar on the fiftieth day of school, in order to observe its fiftieth anniversary, so on Sunday we observed fifty years of ASDS and fifty more years of All Saints' Church. The display of all who were baptized during our first one hundred years will hang in the church throughout June. We hope you found some names you recognize among the 1,739!

Looking ahead, we will observe our founding day on July 1 at all three services, and on August 26 we’ll enjoy a birthday party luncheon. Mark your calendars and invite a friend.

Healthy Saints Hike

Mother Cynthia has invited people of all ages to join her for the Healthy Saints Hike, Saturday, June 16.

Gather at All Saints’ — 8:45 a.m Return to All Saints’ — 12:30 p.m

The hike will be at Middledorf Preserve. We will meet in front of the church at 8:45 a.m. to carpool. We will leave promptly at 9:00 a.m. and be back no later than 12:30 p.m. Bring water, a sweater or jacket, a hat, and a snack if you like; wear good walking shoes. The hike will be rescheduled if it’s rainy.

Cynthia Spencer, as a member of Big Sur Land Trust, has arranged this hike on BSLT property. Please RSVP to Cynthia at [email protected].

Telling the Great News of All Saints'

The vestry experienced an epiphany when it realized that we both grow the church and empower our many ministries by telling others the great news of All Saints’ Parish. This is because people join and contribute their time, talent, and treasure to organizations that have happy, hopeful attitudes, live by the values of the Gospel, and encourage people to participate. Members of the vestry then asked what stories they might tell, and created a long list that you will find on the web under the title of “Telling the Great News of All Saints’.” They each made a commitment to tell at least five others, in the hope that those five would, in turn, further share our great news. They invite you to join them! Here are just a few samples of their ongoing list.

• Twenty-five youth have participated in youth group events this year, with twenty-two participating more than once. Seven of these are friends of other youth, and not members.

• Have you heard the story of support and love for Vir-ginia Bickford? An army of All Saints’ volunteers helped

Sunday Morning 9:00 a.m. Education

Throughout the month of June, Fr. Rick will lead discussions on the biblical prophets and our prophetic role in contemporary society. On Sunday, July 1, the vestry will hold its semiannual forum. Vestry members look forward to reporting on the state of the parish, answering questions, and hearing your hopes and dreams for the work of Christ among us.

Youth Ministryby Robin Denney

The youth ministry will continue at the regular time, the first and third Sundays of the month following the 10:30 a.m. service (11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.). At youth group we have team building games, bible study, singing, and discuss life and spiritual topics.

Youth Group: June 3, June 17, July 1, July 15, August 5, August 19

We have three youth participating in the Sierra Service Project middle school mission trip this summer to McDermit Nevada (July 29 - August 3). They will be staying in a local elementary school gym while helping with home repair projects on the Paiute-Shoshone Reservation. This is a spiritual, cultural, and servant journey they are embarking on. Robin Denney, our youth leader, will also be going as a chaperone. We need to raise $1,500, in order to cover the cost of the trip, in addition to what the youth will contribute themselves. This cost goes to cover transportation and the program cost including supplies.

If you would like to contribute send a check to All Saints' Episcopal Church, memo: "youth mission".

To learn more about our youth ministry please email Robin Denney at [email protected] or call Robin on her cell phone 805-835-8538.

Family Faith

Parents involved in the Family Faith Conversations enthusiastically favor having their children participate in the liturgy on Sundays, so we are cancelling the Seasons of the Spirit class for children in grades three to

five. Godly Play for the 10:30 a.m. service and nursery care from 9:00 a.m. to noon will continue. Each Sunday you will find special bulletins (The Sunday Paper and The Sunday Paper, Jr.) for younger and older children at the back of the church.

Conversatio

On the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month we are offering conversatio. This is a modern version of an ancient spiritual discipline from the Benedictine tradition that consists of prayerfully listening through a small group discussion around a specific subject. Come to All Saints' Chapel of Sts. Benedict and Scholastica on the corner of Lincoln and Ninth (next to our Choir Room) at 5:00 p.m. for a one-hour time of discernment.

Christian Yoga

You are invited once again to participate in a series of Christian yoga classes on Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. from June 27 through August 1. Beth Lefebvre will welcome you, whether you are a longtime practitioner or a first-time explorer.

Wednesday Bible Study

Please join the Wednesday Morning Bible Study Group in June as the group will begin studying the book of Acts. The group just finished an exegetical study of the book of 1 Thessalonians. One of their favorite verses was: "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." - 1 Ths 5:11

Giving Update: Generosity and Gratitude

The generosity of members and friends of All Saints’ is wonderful to behold. Happily, it also seems to be contagious! Giving of our time, skills, and financial support inspires others to do the same. Because of the continuing generosity of us all, the vestry is confident that we are fully funding our ministries.

The vestry continues to lead parishioners in inviting and welcoming new members, and in asking others to join us in giving. We are grateful to the many people who originally pledged, and to all of those who, in the past four months, pledged or gave an additional $65,000. During the same period we lost $11,000 in pledges (due to pledge adjustments and departures from the parish), so we currently are just $18,000 away from fully funding our ministries. The vestry will continue to seek donations and pledges in order to balance the budget, but they do so with great gratitude and optimism.

Opportunities to Serve

Are you looking for a way to express your talents, build new friendships and serve others? Consider joining a ministry team or perhaps leading one. Here are some opportunities:

Altar Guild - Prepare the church altar for communion. Tidy up afterward. Flexible schedule. Contact Valerie Warren through the church office.

Welcoming Team - Welcome visitors and members on Sunday Morning and introduce them to other members and leaders after the services. Contact the office or Bonnie Bufkin on Sunday to learn more.

Bach to the Future - Join the team of volunteer adults serving the middle school and elementary school students enrolled in Bach to the Future for one or two weeks during the Bach Festival. Contact Todd Samra for more information.

Packing Food Bags - Help is needed to pack food bags. Approximately 1 hour per week. Please call her at 625-7622.

Thank You

Thank you, Mike Raggett, for serving faithfully for the past three years as treasurer of the parish. Your time and talent are much appreciated. Thank you also for training your replacement over the month of June.

Thank you, Jackie Graham, for agreeing to serve as treasurer for the next three years. We look forward to your service and appreciate your willingness to give of your time and abilities.

Thank you, Elizabeth Barratt, for deciphering and transferring the handwritten names in our registers onto spreadsheets.  We now have digital records of the baptismal and burial registers that can be used in such ways as displaying the names of all the baptized at the back of the church.

Stewardship: We offer our all so that

Christ may change water into wine.

A Huge Success

Small Bites for Big Hunger was a huge success! As those of you fortunate enough to have attended know, the 11 May inaugural presentation of the

All Saints’ Outreach Commission’s Small Bites for Big Hunger was a sold-out event, featuring six local chefs offering their delicious signature hors d’oeuvres, paired with wine from five local wineries.

We raised additional funds by holding a ninety-seven-item silent auction and a seven-item live auction. After paying expenses, we cleared $22,000, all of which is being used to fund our local food ministries: food bags distributed daily from the All Saints’ office; larger boxes at Easter and Christmas; monthly I-HELP dinners; support of the Thomas Carmen Food Pantry in Marina; support to Epiphany Lutheran & Episcopal Church for food; support of All Saints’ Day School’s bean bag program; and development of the new All Saints’ prepared/hot meal program, scheduled to start in the fall.

The Outreach Commission thanks all the volunteers, event attendees (all but $10 of your ticket price is tax-deductible), auction item donors, and financial sponsors of this event. Collectively, we more than achieved our goal to bring together the time and talent of the community for the most worthy goal of feeding the hungry. Blessings to each of you! Look for the second annual Small Bites for Big Hunger on Friday, 3 May 2013.

Summer Services at Santa Lucia

We are pleased to announce that we will hold weekly services at the Santa Lucia Chapel at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evenings for all of June, July, and August.

The Rev. Cynthia Spencer, John Burk and Fr. Rick will lead the services in our outdoor chapel in Big Sur. Please invite your friends and especially those who live in or around Big Sur. You are invited also to bring a picnic dinner for your family and use the BBQ stands in Paul's Meadow after the service for a time of fellowship and bonding.

All Saints' Food Bags

We are always grateful for donations. With everyone's health in mind, consider donating items such as hearty soups (those with 600 mgs. or less of sodium), peanut butter with no hydrogenated oil and canned or jarred fruit.

ASDS Graduation Ceremony

At 9:00 a.m. on June 1 the halls, parking spaces and church will be full of young families from All Saints' Day School.

The graduation ceremony is the culmination of a student’s educational years at All Saints’ Day School and is always a touching occasion. Held each year at All Saints' on the first Friday morning in June, all students join in as we celebrate the graduation of our 8th graders. Poised graduates give articulate, moving, and memorable graduation speeches to the audience of students, parents, families and friends. A reception hosted by 7th grade parents is held in the parish hall immediately following. It is a never-to-be-forgotten day.

Virginia sort, pack, run errands, and say goodbye. Her family witnessed the power of Christ’s love at All Saints’.

• It seems as if the entire surrounding community re-sponded to Small Bites for Big Hunger. We welcomed 190 parishioners, and people beyond the parish—including school families. Over 100 auction items were donated.

• We are offering a summer music camp for children called Bach to the Future. Previously these two week-long camps were run by the Carmel Bach Festival, with us as a supporting partner. Now it is fully our ministry. At the end of each of the two weeks, the children sing at the service and, of course, they bring their families with them!

• We are restarting weekly services at the Santa Lucia Chapel in Big Sur, at 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays. What a joy to be able to offer summer services at our outdoor chapel again, after a hiatus of approximately ten years.

• Have you seen the brochure about the upcoming Festival of Christian Spirituality: The Gift of Poverty and Abundance? We can be proud of our parish for offering to the greater Church such an incredible experience. The fes-tival is open to people in our area and we are also inviting people from across the nation to come to our destination location in order to participate.

Youth Beach Party

To celebrate the end of the school year, there will be a beach party luau with snacks June 1, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Carmel Beach.

For more information, please email Robin Denney at [email protected] or call Robin on her cell phone 805-835-8538.

Book Club

June’s All Saints’ Book Club choice is a true story yet the simple facts are hard to believe…that in 1951, a poor black woman named Henrietta Lacks dies of cervical cancer, but pieces of the tumor that killed her—taken without her knowledge or consent—live on, first in one lab, then in hundreds, then thousands, then in giant factories churning out polio vaccines, then aboard rocket ships launched into space. The cells code named He-La from this one tumor would spawn a multi-billion dollar industry and become a foundation of modern science—leading to breakthroughs in

gene mapping, cloning and fertility and helping to discover how viruses work and how cancer develops (among a million other things). The cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, but her family never saw any of the profits.

Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave, and Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. Aside from the fascinating scientific advances in this story, there are also extremely heartrending human consequences. Why, if Henrietta Lacks was so important to medicine, couldn’t her grandchildren afford health insurance?

The All Saints’ Book Club regularly meets in the church library the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. The review leader/presenter brings lettuce for a salad, and the other participants bring something to place in the salad or food to share.

the Business of the VestryAt the recommendation of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, the vestry has decided to restart the design and construction process for the balcony. Now that we have confirmed that the balcony is structurally sound, we will take the time necessary to create a safe and attractive balcony within a well-managed budget.

We accepted with gratitude the offer of a tapestry from the estate of artist Mark Adams, who also designed our baptistery. An ad hoc design task force composed of Charlene Brown, Susan Britton, and Fr. Rick recommended acceptance, and the vestry approved. We await the formal offer of this piece of fine art, which will be hung on the north wall of the baptistery.

The vestry unanimously adopted a three-year business plan that projects how we will continue to grow our membership and ministries while meeting our financial responsibilities.

To fulfill the two goals they established in January, vestry members are each making a commitment to tell at least five other people at least one piece of the “Great News at All Saints’.” They generated a list of such great news, which you will find in this edition of the Patter, and they invite you also to tell at least five others.

In July Jacklyn Graham will begin to serve as the new Treasurer for the Vestry of All Saints'. This is a three year volunteer position. Jackie has extensive experience in banking, strategic planning, transitions, and has experience serving on a vestry at her previous church.

The Festival of Christian Spirituality

The Center for Christian Transformation offers a series of festivals whose purpose is to further equip members of the Church for effective ministry. The goal of the festivals is to permit the Holy Spirit to change lives, so that the followers of Jesus might more effectively serve as agents of transformation in the world. Each festival addresses a critical need in the contemporary world.

Each festival offers several spiritual practices. The central discipline of each festival is a contemporary version of an ancient practice from the Benedictine tradition called conversatio. This disarmingly simple form of discernment unites listening to God, self, and others in the context of a dialogue. Consistent with its heritage, conversatio is both a specific practice and a way of life.

Participants return home renewed and further equipped to make the Gospel relevant in word and deed. Participants are encouraged to share the new way of life, with its emerging insights and wisdom, within their own context of ministry. The Center permits participants to remain connected after the festival concludes, while providing additional resources through the internet.

Step away from your daily routine during the weekend of September 28-30 and come to the Festival of Christian Spirituality. The 2012 theme is The Gift of Poverty and Abundance. The festival will allow people to build deep friendships, and

engage in spiritual disciplines new and old.

spirituality.

What a great archivist you are!

Thank you, Susan Britton, for decorating the church for Pentecost Day and the following weeks. The banners, flowers, ferns, and display of names of the baptized all enhanced our worship.

Thank you, Dave Keaton and Fred Terman, for serving on the Finance Committee for the past several years. Your wise council and informed advice have been very helpful.

Thank you Jana Gill who packs food bags faithfully each week during the nine months that she and her husband reside in Carmel.

The Grant Challenge is Complete

Thank you to all who met the giving challenge set by anonymous members. The generosity of two parish families certainly inspired many others to also give. Thus the challenge amount of $4,000 doubled the joy of giving, and increased our income by $8,000.

Online Giving is Possible

The top navigation bar of our website has a button simply labeled 'Give'. You may also click the button below when viewing online or enter in this URL: http://www.allsaintscarmel.org/give-to-all-saints/

Once on All Saints' giving page, you'll find instruction on how to set up your account in inFellowship that allows you to set up recurring gifts to satisfy your pledge or make one time gifts using: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, or e-check. The secure portal allows you to get the points you want, or give directly from your checking account.
