And all of a sudden its June... where is this year going?

I will firstly apologise for the lateness of this issue, a combination of work, college, home pressures, the accumalation of race meeting after race meeting and the general rush of life, but a little later than expected here we are!!

The racing season is now in full swing with Magnolls Farm and Rother Valley now a distant memory, I’m penning this from the midweek break of The Big Lake extravaganxa, looking from the window of the Team Nationwide motorhome, Kent Gano’s stars and stripes flag flaps gently in the wind!! I won’t dwell on The Big Lake, as we will save that for next month.

June’s offering includes race reports from both Magnolls and Rother Valley, both expertly pencilled by young Adam Turnbull and the not so young Keith Rhodes!! A big thanks goes out to both for their time and effort!!

On a more personal note, I’m certain you will join me in sending congratulations to Jonathan and Sarah on the birth of their Son Theo Jonathan Spedding, also the belated congratulations to Jamie and Ruth on the birth of their daughter Emily Ruth Lenendon... more future champions join the club!?!?

The end of June brings the racing season for a second visit to Hacketts lake at Nottingham, after the success of last years meeting the

HCGB merry-go-round returns. The Midlands branch are pleased to announce the local, and acclamed band ‘The Score’ will be playing on Saturday evening, along with the return of bar!! Please come along and enjoy!!

One final personal issue, the evening of the 23rd of June will be a chance for you to have a drink with one half of your editoral as we will be celebrating 40 years young... in case your unsure thats Darren’s birthday, not Sarah’s... lol!!

Now all thats left to say is read on happy and safe hovering.

Sarah and Darren

The Chairman’s DeskChapter Thirteen, Alleviate

Boredom is not an experience I have had time to consider recently. With the number of events being held this year, I struggle to find time to cover other areas like work, garden, house etc.

In mid May Jake Cooper, Ivan Pullen, Keith Oakley and I went along the River Trent to scout out possible launch sites and other bits associated with organising a cruise. We met Nathan Ablott, a recent new member, who lived locally and with his help we have been able to put together a plan for a Trent Cruise during the Nottingham week. So far crews for 18 craft have indicated that they wish to take part.

With the appointment of Russ Pullen to head up the Recreational (non-competitive) side of the club, we have seen a great leap forward in enthusiasm and energy. He is highly experienced in most aspects of hovercraft use (and abuse). He already organises regular cruises in the South East and publicises these on the club website. If you are not a regular website watcher, ask to be put on to his email list to receive direct notification of events.

Kevin Foster has managed to secure a fantastic deal with our Insurance Company for cover of Recreational hovercraft use. Club members can obtain the details by contacting him. He will authorise the Insurance Company to give you the discount.

Carla Thomas has worked extremely hard to produce a fantastic new look website. Please take a look and pass on your comments. There are still a few glitches to iron out. Louise Beale and Jon Pert have both been heavily involved in this evolution. This process will probably continue for some time.

Jo Driscoll has forged ahead with the new stock and logo items for the shop. She has secured a supplier who is in a position of being able to offer HCGB (and team or both) logo items via the internet. She will continue to bring stock to events but if you cannot find your size it can be ordered on line for delivery to your home or collection at the next event. Please ask Jo for details.

We need to continue to encourage schools, scouts, and air cadets etc to get involved with the Challenge to Youth. John Scriven is continuing to be a great ambassador for this project. Les Bran and Slap (Ian Richardson) have completed the prototype craft and brought it along to the Rother Valley Event. Teething problems with the belt tracking meant that they were restricted to static display. It looks just like a miniature of Tony Goldney’s Formula 2 (No.50) craft.

Summer is coming. If you wish to discuss anything, my contact details are at the back of the magazine.

There were lots of brand new craft at the first race meeting of the year. Team Toon (Paul Joyce and Clive Mason) had a craft with Mr Bump on! Klaus Bonighausen came over from Germany to make a rare appearance with two new craft. Tony Goldney and Wayne Ravenhall both have new Raider craft. Little Scrapper 2 made its first race meeting. More than ten novice and junior tests were completed. Mark Pye (90) blew his blades in his flotation test.

Novice There were ten novices in the first race. Benn Bristow (98) and John Cotton (111) stopped. Justin Baines (68) went through the catch netting at Telegraph Turn. Doug Limburn (63) won his first race after not racing for at least 20 years. Pete Gill (109) was second and Clive Mason (43) was third. Ten novices started the second race. Darren Stevens (110) hit the tyres at Telegraph Turn. Glen Smith (89) went through the catch netting in Little Scrapper 2. Clive Mason won with a half-lap lead followed by Doug Limburn and Benn Bristow. Eleven novices started the third race. Clive Mason led from the start and finished half a lap in front of second. Glen Smith stopped going down the hill. Second was Doug Limburn, third was Benn Bristow. In the fourth race Doug Limburn made a great start to the day but it doesn’t hold because Clive Mason overtakes and pulls away. Glen Smith doesn’t make the Telegraph Turn properly and made the catch netting worn out. Clive Mason and John Cotton both spin. First Clive Mason, second Doug Limburn, third Benn Bristow. In race five, David DeMerist’s (226) race

started badly as he stops and stays stopped. Clive Mason was so far ahead of third that although he stops, he keeps second place. Doug Limburn then stops but keeps first because Clive had already stopped. John Cotton goes into the catch netting; Makyla Greaves (102) stops but is OK. First Doug Limburn, second Clive Mason, third Glen Smith. Clive Mason won Novice F2 for the weekend and Angus Daly (215) won Novice F35.

F503 In race one, Hannah Deacon (112) went into the catch netting early in the race. Wayne Ravenhall (47) hit the catch netting – maybe with a rudder problem – and didn’t rejoin the race. The race was won by Nick Drew (81) who was miles in front of second which was Conrad Beale (52). Very close behind was Bernie Hook (77). In race two, Mikey Lambert (55) and Paul Joyce (48) started half a lap down with Sarah Gill (106) and Josh Daly (88) having problems. The race was won by Nick Drew followed by Conrad Beale and Bernie Hook. Mikey Lambert stopped on the water and was trailered off. In race three Chris Daly (94) started late due to an accident in novices. The top three were half a lap ahead. First Nick Drew, second Conrad Beale, third Bernie Hook. In the fourth race Bernie Hook and Mikey Lambert have a bad start by both of them spinning and pulling off the pond. Hannah Deacon stopped in front of race control. Sarah Gill stopped at the top of the hill. Paul Joyce had a fourth, a good result but third was snatched by James Limburn. First Nick Drew, second Conrad Beale. In the fifth race, Benn Bristow and Clive Mason’s first national race started well, but Frazer George (74) hits the telegraph pole. Mikey Lambert misses the transition. Sarah Gill stops at the top of the hill and Wayne Ravenhall has a problem. First Nick Drew, second Conrad Beale, third Bernie Hook. This was the result for the weekend too.

F3 In the first F3 race, there was a good tussle between Francis Morales (143) and Phil Hall (142) with Phil taking the win about a second in front of Francis. Andy Folland (177) was third having just overtaken Tony Broad (132) on the last corner. In race two, Francis Morales and Phil Hall collided on the first corner, allowing Andy Folland and James Eddy (181) to get away. Andy Folland hit the catch netting allowing James Eddy through. Francis was stuck

in the catch netting and finished a lap down. Tony Broad kept away from the drama to win the race with Phil Hall second and James Eddy third. Francis Morales had a rocketing start to the third race in the ex-Staples BBV TZR which made first position come to him for the whole race. Andy Folland just snatched second from Phil Hall who got third. In race four James Eddy had a very good start but stopped on the pond. Andy Folland kept second despite hitting the catch netting. James Eddy eventually got going but was two laps down. First Phil Hall, second Tony Broad, third Francis Morales. In the final race, Francis Morales and Phil Hall nudged each other. Andy Folland stopped and loses third but still carries on. Francis hits some pipes near the water. Bearwood F35’s (212) thrust engine goes in front of all the F3s. They all hit him except Tony Broad so he snatched second. First was FrancisMorales, third Phil Hall. The winner for the weekend was Phil Hall, second Francis Morales, third Tony Broad.

F35 In the first race, Jake Cooper (203) won in his new front-engined BBV with tiny handlebars. Kevin Thomas (214) was second followed by Zoë Deacon (219). In the second race, Jake led to the end, even catching up and overtaking an F3. Second was Zoë Deacon and third Charlie Metcalf. In race three Jake Cooper was once again miles ahead and even lapped second place Zoë Deacon and Kevin Thomas. Kevin Thomas has a bad start in race four which stopped him finishing the race. First Jake Cooper, second Zoë Deacon. In race five, Team Bearwood F35 (212)’s thrust engine breaks on the pond and some of the F3s crash into him. Jake Cooper pulls away to win. Second Zoë Deacon, third Kevin Thomas. The weekend’s results were in the same order.

F1 Only four F1 craft entered the first race, by the first corner there were only two! Dan Newton (20) hit the catch netting after colliding with David Leakey (6). Dan retired and David carried on to finish in third about three laps behind the winner Daniel Turnbull (1) with Conrad Beale (319) in second The second race started with Conrad and Dan T going into Telegraph Turn together. Dan hit the tyres and both he and Conrad spun off. David Leakey got caught up with them and ended up in the catch netting. Les

Bran took advantage of this and sped off up the hill. He led for one lap but then Dan T overtook to win. There was close racing between Conrad and Les for second, with Conrad taking second by 0.5s after Les hit the tyres coming down the hill. By race three Dan Newton hasn’t finished any races yet and it may stay that way the rate he’s going. Also Les Bran has a problem even though he finished the race. First Dan Turnbull, second Conrad Beale, third Les Bran. Only three craft enter the fourth F1 race but it is still exciting. Dan Turnbull’s lift engine broke on the second lap. Les Bran kept looking down, so he may have had the same problem! Dan Newton stops with a thrust problem. Only one craft finishes the race – Les Bran. The F1s are in with the F2s for the last race and there are very strong winds on the lake. Dan Turnbull laps everyone. First Dan Turnbull, second Les Bran. The result for the weekend was first Dan Turnbull, second Team Raider, third Conrad Beale.

F2 In the first race, there were seven craft out, with Klaus Bonighausen (316) as a late starter. Tony Goldney (50) won the race, having lapped everyone but Bernie Hook (77) who finished second with Fred Wilson (60) third. In race two, Tony Goldney was way ahead of the rest of the pack early on in the race. James Limburn (62) rolled his craft at the bottom of the hill and the race was not red-flagged thanks to the muscle marshals. Fred Wilson ended his race with a visit to the catch netting. Tony Goldney won with Bernie Hook second and Klaus Bonighausen third. Klaus Bonighausen has a brilliant start in the brand new Euro Craft and led to the end of race three. This was his first ever race win! He did a 49.9s lap – very fast for an F2. Bernie Hook almost rolled it down the hill but finished third. Second was Tony Goldney. The fourth race was combined with F1. All the action was made by the F1s. The only exciting parts were when Fred Wilson almost ploughed in and Tony Goldney overtook an F1 to finish first. Second was Dave Polfrey and third Bernie Hook. Four craft were on the grid for the final race. One started late, Paul Joyce. Bernie Hook almost rolls his craft coming down the hill! Tony Goldney

overtakes an F1 (they were combined). First Tony Goldney, second Bernie Hook, third Katrina Polfrey. The result for the weekend was Team Goldney first, followed by Bernie Hook and Fred Wilson. Junior Nine juniors made a very exciting first race. Will Barnes (7), Sarah Foster (11), Stevie Gill (100) and Joshua Leakey (96) all went into the catch netting during the race. The race was red flagged after Will Barnes fell out just past the finish line on the fourth lap, he still managed a second. Callum Beale (1) won and Joshua Leakey was third. Abi Beale (152), Christian Broad (132) and Jonathan Stevens (110) all had their first Junior race. Ten racers lined up for the second junior race and must have had fun. Sarah Foster had a good start and led to the end. Early on Imogen Hawkins (214) and Stevie Gill went into the catch netting. Callum Beale started at the back of the grid because he didn’t sign on properly. He still got third. Second was Will Barnes. In race three Abi Beale was a lap down on the leaders by the time she had finished the first one. The top three get about ¾ of a lap in front of fourth. Also Charlie Bristow (8) has an important meeting with the catch netting. First Will Barnes, second Sarah Foster, third Callum Beale In race four, Callum Beale had a rubbish start after being hit by Charlie Bristow. Honor Greaves had a good first race and didn’t have any bumps. Charlie Bristow keeps hitting the catch netting so the rudders come off. First Stevie Gill, second Sarah Foster, third Will Barnes. In the final race, Will Barnes goes very wide at the first corner so finished fourth. Charlie Bristow and Honor Greaves go onto the right-hand bank (wrong side). Abi Beale falls out (only lightly) as Imogen Hawkins stops. First Stevie Gill, second Callum Beale, third Sarah Foster. Sarah Foster and Will Barnes ended the weekend on equal points, but Sarah got the win because she came highest in the last race. Callum came third followed by Stevie Gill, Jonathan Stevens and Christian Broad.

Open Ten craft started the first open race. Jon Spedding (6) was miles ahead of everyone else. Francis Morales (The Flying Normans, 147) and Nick Drew (81) almost took each other out at the Telegraph Turn. There were two late starters – Les Bran in his F1 (27) and Dave Polfrey (33). First was Jon Spedding, second Francis Morales, third Nick Drew. In the second race, Nick Drew started well and led for a while but finished fourth. David Leakey started late and blew his thrust blades coming out of the pond. The race was won by Ian Richardson (27) second was Francis Morales and third was Ricky Goosey (76) in Bernie Hook’s craft. In race three, Andy Folland does not get off the grid - not good. Tony Goldney leads but has a problem and goes into the paddock. Dave Polfrey and Nick Drew have a big scrap together for fourth. First Ian Richardson, second Ricky Goosey, third Phil Hall (147). In the fourth race, Ian Richardson started well but Dan Turnbull - who started from the back – takes the lead away. Ian has a problem and pulls off. Bernie Hook (76) misses the transition off the pond. First Dan Turnbull, second Nick Drew, third Francis Morales. In the last race of the weekend, Dave Polfrey almost flips the craft which made him miss the transition. Ricky Goosey also misses it. Ian Richardson goes very wide and hits the catch netting as the thrust had gone but is OK. First Nick Drew, second Phil Hall, third Ricky Goosey. The weekend was won by The Flying Normans followed by Team Drew and Team Hoosey.

I took my cadet craft and had a great time driving round and round the course. Thank you to the lovely marshals who rescued me (twice) when I ran out of fuel after 18 laps. Thank you to Charlie and Gill for letting us come and have fun.

Race Report by

Keith RhodesROUND TWOMAY 19-20 Rother ValleyOut on the waters’ edge, people were relaxing with gin and tonics, pina colada’s, smooth beers and other pleasant apertifs, enjoying the hot morning sun and looking forward to a cooling swim. Spain is so nice this time of year.

Back at Rother Valley, the drivers and crews prepares their craft with overcoats hats and hoodies to keep the cold and rain out. Remind me please - why do we do this?

After practice and an early swimmer (Damian “I can master an F1” Rhodes), all is set for the weekend. Novice R1 sees two new members Glenn Smith in Dcrapper 89 and Justin Baines in Scrapper 68. I mention them now as they have a good weekend without incident so you won’t here much about these two in this report. Well done both. On the other hand Doug Limburn, returning to the fold after many years awat delights us with an artistic somersault whilst leaving his craft to its own devices. In the re-run after Doug is removed, David Atkins has a very competent drive and finishes first.

F50 R1 sees the usual suspects in very close racing (more on this later) and a surprise as Mikey Lambert and Sue Oakley stay in their craft for the whole race. The F3/F35 R1 followed with Tony Broad and Jamie Lewenden fighting it off the start. Tony drops back during the race, but although after another long battle for P2 with Phil Hall which was eventually won with a tighter line through turn 1, Jamie could do nothing about Francis Morais who delivered a very competent win.

F1 - Sadly a depleted field was down to 2 when Les Bran retired without completing one lap. Damien Rhodes seemed to be doing well on this steep learning curve in his first F1 race. No points for guessing the emphatic and dominant winner. F2 R1 would also deliver a similar predictable winner with Tony Goldneys new craft bedded in, but Kevin Eastwood, complete with new rear pipes seem to bring him on as a powerful force and he will have a consistent and professional drive all weekend. Bernie Hook pulls out on lap 1, Tony gets a near miss off Team Toon when lapping, and at the end Team Goldney is half a lap up on everyone.

Juniors sometimes reminds us all of how badly we all first drove when we started out. Callum Beale decides

it’s all too much and goes for a swim, then for another to retrieve his goggles (away from his craft on the racing line!) then finally climbs back on his craft ensuring it sinks. Result was a red flag. Hhhhmmmmm.

Open R1 sees a big field, and for the crowd ( about 10?) presents the best spectacle. Les Bran has it sorted and shoots off the line with Dan Turnbull for a thrilling crowd pleaser into the top turn. Meanwhile Kevin Eastwood has swiped Katrina Polfrey off the start line pushing her straight into Tristan Rhodes coming off the back of the grid on full beans. Katrina is seen popping off to the loo shortly after the race. As the race develops Dan has a spot of bother with the back markers and Les gets close. Tristan in F1 and Kevin in his new improved F2 do battle. Kevin takes a wide line round back markers on turn 1; Tristan goes inside and take P3. Les completes the race having resolved the ongoing niggles for now, The large F50 pack provide entertainment and good racing with the Team Wiggin putting in a notably good performance.

Junior re-run and Callun takes his weight handicap os soaking clothing in his stride. Jonathan looks good all the way round and is competitive but Stevie Gill is really on it and puts in an excellent drive for a good clean win.

After lunch we rejion the fun in the sun with a good show by the novices. Saul Wiggin hits the front off the line and opens up a commanding lead. This new craft which they finished the night before this event seems to have transformed the family team. Saul finishes nearly a lap ahead of the field and not recognising the chequered falg was for him, did a flying lap of honour ( or maybe it just felt good?)

F50 gets off to a dream start. Darren Clarke picks a bad line on the finish straight on lap 1 and loses positions. Nick Drew pulls out a good lead on the field, with Conrad Beale holding Bernie Hook off for P2. Mikey Lambert seems to slow up during the race - engine trouble? Bernie gets the better of Conrad and on the last lap challenging for the win gets trapped on the back land section handing the win to Nick. Mikey pulls in to find around 20kg of mud in his new ploughing machine - ah that’s why I was slow!

The F3/F35 race gets off well enough but Phil Hall give it some “easy jet” at the far

end. Note to self - keep over the front of the craft! The three F35s patrol round line astern Zoe Deacon leading the way to the win. Its 143/134/132/142 in line pulling away and stretching out over the race (do they have 4 digits allowed in F3? Or can’t they count to 5?). David Atkins spins in front of the leaders just after the land spit causing chaos on lap 6 and the leader’s bunch up. It ends with a mad dash to the line as Francis takes the outside line to overtake a back marker whilst Jamie cuts inside to take it by just half a craft length. A really exciting finish indeed! Post race comment - Jamie- “never give up the inside line” Francis- “I didn’t commit”.

F1 and the 3 are out again. Different challenges for each driver; Dan- keep awake, Damien- stay in the craft, Les- complete the race. But wait - Les is off the line like a scolded cat and he’s shook Dan with an amazing acceleration across the lake. It’s neck and neck at the turn and Dan get’s it only because he had the inside line off the grid. This is good stuff and the pair of them put on a thrilling chase through the race. The whole pit lane has stopped to watch the spectacle which unfolds over the laps. Its lap 8 as they cross the line very close but then it’s all over as Les’ thrust belt gives it up. Les does the walk of shame back to the pits with his handlebars in his hands. Slaps head is in his hands again. Groans of disappointment in the pits. Dan takes the win, Damien putting in a creditable performance in his 2nd ever run in F1.

F2 is a big field again with John Scrivens craft out yet again in one of 5 classes his unit was entered in over the weekend. That poor engine will need a weeks’ sleep after this. Tony and Kevin set the pace, the F503 (see what I did there?) pack enjoying a great battle. Kevin’s reconfigured exhaust seems to be delivering despite the experts telling him it wouldn’t work! Tony looks set for a clean sweep this weekend.

Juniors all get safely away and Stevie Gill looks hot (no- not in that way) Abi Beale gets into bother on the rear land section and her brother does a good job of getting passed her stricken craft safely. It’s good to see that all the juniors drive safely yet competitively. The future looks bright. Another win for Stevie.

And so open again. The prospect of a big entry holds the crowd’s attention as well as the pit lane crews. Tristan is off in his F1 with Kevin in pursuit. Lap 2 and James

Page 9: June 2012

LightHovercraft 09www.hovercraft.org.uk

Limburn spins it after the land spit and stalls causing navigation issues behind him. Eventually he limps off across the race line timing it nicely in front of the unseen but oncoming F1 craft at full race speed. It’s a miss by 3 feet! Meanwhile team Polfrey and Bernie are dicing for position. I think its Katrina as the bottom looks better :) well better than Bernie’s despite last years’ vote! A good race and an easy 1-2 for Tristan and Kevin with Jamie storming (geddit) through to 3rd.

Sunday sees the return of legend Michael Brickles. This ex F1 multi champion has to re-qualify and it’s quite funny seeing him in novices - they don’t know what’s going to hit them. He says he’s just going to take it easy though - LIAR! They’re off - and sometime later so is Saul Wiggin. Lap 2 Michaels up to P2 but he can’t catch Doug. Still not racing then? Saul comes right through the field and comes alongside surprised Michael. Still not racing? Saul tries to do Michael on the start turn but Michael “closes the door firmly” and Saul spins out. Still not racing? Saul, determined and clearly with a good craft ( well done Team Wiggin), catches up yet again and for the last 3 laps it’s a straight fight. Its fair because Michaels in John Scrivens craft which itself is a good unit. Michael holds him off and Doug takes the win. Glen Smith does a series of pirouettes to entertain the crowd as he learns his trade. Entertaining race. Michael admits after the race he could not stand for someone overtaking him - looks like he’s still got the bug then!

F50, turns into a fiasco at the far end turn on the out lap with craft ending up on the back lad section. This is looking messy. Then Double A - Adam Polfrey at the helm, crash with Andy G, and then Mikey Lambert strikes - not once, not twice but three incidents in half a lap. Mikey is in trouble with a craft that just won’t stop spinning, Darren gets caught, then our othe rfavourite Sue spins and Mike thinks it time to mate the hovercrafts. Clearly he’s a long stayer and its some minute before he dismounts (ladies take note). Meanwhile Darren’s sinking fast and has to get out. Ben Bristow sees Darren’s helmet as a target and does his best to clip this new marker buoy on his way past. Chief Marshall hangs on long enough to call it when enough laps are done to avoid a re-run. No one knows who won and no one cared - it was much funnier wastching the antics.F3/F35 was a tight start with Jamie “I couldn’t see you on my left side” Lewenden pushing his closest rivals away from the inside line all the way up the run out to the buoy. We need more right hand circuits to sort him out! Rebecca leads the F35s round the course. James Eddy has a moment on the land section ends up in the water and sinks. David Atkins

catches his front end on the spit turn and goes out superman styli ending with a nice 360*. The race degenerates into a farce with Ewan Black having to rescue 2 sunken craft which holds up the meeting for a full 20 minutes.

Eventually the F1’s are out again. Les is all mended and crowd expectation are high. They’re off at incredible speed - Damian switches to the inside behind the other two and is pulling up and past Les - how can this be? - This can’t last - it doesn’t - the notorious Nationwide F1 beast digs in and throws its master onto the lift engine. By the time he’s got the lift engine going and rejoins he’s a lap down. Learning curves me thinks!!

Les meanwhile has dropped off the pace and that niggling engine seems to be teasing them again. Dan’s well away and can back off the limit. Later Les picks it up again for a comfortable second place. Back in the pits Les admits he backed off as he spotted his lanyard rolling about in the bottom of the craft “so i thought I would take it easy!” (just wait till the race director reads this LOL!). “But I caught it and got it back on so then I went for it again”. Well that’s alright then.

F2 - and Team Toon and Fred are shoving each other at the start, but its the Tony and Kevin show again. Team Toon nearly roll on the land section later and Nick Drew joins on lap 6 - surely he thinks hes going to win from here? No - he’s out testing tank positions. That’s not in the Kama Sutra.

Juniors goes the way of the weekend with a spin for Honor but a good recovery from her, and a minor misjudgement from Stevie passing Nils. Honor provides the entertainment with a spin and swim right in front of race control - show off! Post race quote from Honor “it was freezing but I knew it was going”

Opening time (do I need to explain that one?) and the F1’s are all out again. Dan and Les are off; Tristan and Kevin suabble for P3. There’s a dog fight amongst the F2/F50 pack throughout the race.

Dan misses the land section on lap 4 then pulls out of the race. The flying Normans dice with Storm, Dave Polfrey runs a lonely race in 5th, not clear why he’s behing Jamie? A good race for a crowd now of around 50 and well fought. Les misses the flag for the win and does another flying lap (do look up now and again Les!).

And so to the last set of races and the novices sees Micael B pull out with a fraying drive belt. Doug rams a backmarker during a lapping throwing himself out and taking both craft out of

the race. It’s a red flag and in the pits two people dressed in Orange with stern faces await the return of Mr Limburn!!!

F50 and 73/46/95 all clash on the run out. 82/52/77 all battle for the lead (you work out who they are!) Adam Polfrey roll’s badly on the land section and the race is stopped. I seem to keep mentioning them?

F3/F35. Phil gets more Ryan Air on the out lap, Stu (or Sam) in 136 lose lots of skirts and retire, Jamie sets the pace for a clear win.

F50 re-run - incident free this time, (Mikey not out!); the top 3 are all tight with Andy G the best of the rest in 4th. It’s all down to the last turn and Nick comes up on a backmarker after the spit. The crown prince goes out wide and round but the wise old owl hangs on and goes inside to take the win by a whisker! Post race comment; Nick - “I hesitated” Conrad - “I saw the opportunity and said I’m gonna have that”.

F1 - Dan and Les shoot off with a more circumspect start from Damian! The 3 craft spread out around the lake, but a welcome performance from Les as the race closes with Dan glorious once again. Damian finishes 2nd in his first venture. Reckon he’s hooked now!

F2 has a surprising end with Tony suffering engine malfunction handing the win to Kevin. Elsewher Dave Polfrey takes Bernie on the start corner with a clever switch of race line after several laps of tag wrestling and although he didn’t know it Dave needed to overtake Andy G to take 3rd for the weekend and he did it on the last lap, much to the excitment of the 3 of us who realised the implications.

Juniors saw Stevie round off a perfect score with the new drive belt fitted. A sterling performance from a girl who was scared of hovercraft a year ago.

Open race - last race where the box of mad frogs seem to be driving the craft - Les and Tristan drag it out, Kevin tagging along very nicely. Jamie and Nick fight it out for P4 with 8 more craft in the mix. Back markers hold Les up and the gap closes but somewhere out back Tristan tears half of one sides skirts and he has to limp home handing P1 for the weekend to Kevin.

So we finally got the answer - this is why we do it!

From your intrepid reporter on the front line with compliments,

Keith Rhodes

Meeting 245 –Saturday 5th May 2012 at 10:00am at Magnoll’s Farm

Ref. Item245.01 Present: Gill Crane, Chris Daly, Kevin Foster, Deborah Hunt, Jim Lyne, Roger Morton, Carla Thomas. Apologies: Tony Drake (President) Chris welcomed Deborah and Gill as members of council.245.02 Minutes of Meeting 244: Circulated with the meeting notice. Had already been approved by email.245.06 Matters’ arising:244.03 New council members. Secretary had advised Gill and Deborah of their co-option to council and had also advised web-master and magazine editors.244.04 Election of officers. Paula had confirmed her willingness to continue as treasurer. Secretary had advised magazine editors of new & continuing roles.244.09 AGM. Secretary had written to Jo-Anne to thank her and her team for their splendid work in organising recent AGMs. Carla, with help from Del, has been planning for the 2013 AGM. Will be March 9 & 10 at the Hilton Northampton (the same venue as 2012, but with a better deal)244.12 Information trailer / club shop. Jo-Anne has taken over the trailer (and brought it to Magnoll’s Farm). She has found a new supplier for club merchandise. 244.16. Recruitment of members. Bob’s operation did not go as well as had been hoped and he will not be at Nottingham. He will bring his craft to Claydon & Towcester but will need drivers/help as he won’t be able to drive the craft himself. Chris’s efforts to recruit new members through a Groupon offer are on-hold until planning issues at Jake’s Place are resolved. Note: Other matters arising are covered under the appropriate agenda items below.245.04 Coaching certificate / Instructors licence: This is a work in progress. Regarding CRBs – Kevin had established that it would be up to the individual youth groups being coached to establish their requirements for CRB clearance and to help coaches & instructors to obtain clearance.245.05 Non-racing activity: Carla is thinking about how best to promote non racing activities. Jim and Kevin are considering how to update the non-racing regulations and scrutineering.245.06 The club website: The new front end pages, built by Carla, were almost ready. 245.07 The Challenge to Youth: A work in progress. Carla agreed to chase up people as necessary to keep the momentum going. Carla also suggested that we needed to use a more attractive / attention-grabbing email to sell the challenge to youth groups. She was evaluating email personalisation software. Agreed that we would purchase such software for around $99 if Carla thought it worth the money.245.08 The College Challenge: A work in progress, with Jim taking the lead. Jim needs a domain name to be set up for the challenge. Carla agreed to arrange this for him. Jim is contacting colleges and preparing a list of heads of motor sport engineering. When Jim has a suitable list of contacts and has prepared an email Carla agreed to send the mails to those on his list. Jim will speak to John Gifford about his apprentices entering the challenge. Chris has given up the idea of seeking sponsorship from Red Bull. Too much work was required from us for too little income with too much loss of control.245.10 The Hovercraft Museum: Chris had visited the museum and found that it continues to struggle for funds. On a positive note the museum is keen to support the Challenge to Youth and the College Challenge. Chris left them leaflets which were put on display.245.11 Any other business: Kevin has secured an agreement for cruising insurance for around £100 for members. He is still working on the details and will circulate the offer to members as soon as possible..

One of many new Juniors this year, Charley Bristow has stood out to be one that will do many great things in the future.

At her first meeting at Magnolls she managed to hit the catch netting, make the rudders fall off, nudge Calum Beale and go slightly off course, however, doing all this she kept her confidence up and was able to defend her place and over take any in her way, finishing the weekend at a respectable place.

Letters From Across The Pond...putting the Raptor together. Keith Smallwood and Andy Forbes at Vortex have done a great job in building the Raptors. The quality was very high and did exactly what they said they would in the time frame they promised, and for the amount they said it would cost. It was an absolute pleasure to do buisnesswith Keith. I know it will take a while to shake out the bugs as is normal with any new craft, but this is one project i’m really keen to complete. (I have too many unfinished hovercraft projects at the moment).

But of course it will have to wait a few weeks, as we depart for the UK in a week. I’m really looking forward to attending the activities at the Big Lake in Nottingham and rekindling old acquaintances and making new friends. I’m not bringing a craft, but i’m hoping to stay busy volunteering on the marshalling team or something similar. So next month I will be

reporting on that activity, and whatever else is happening hovercraft-wise “from across the pond”

Hey if you’d like to keep in touch, my email is [email protected] and I can also be found wasting valuable time on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/DavidFReyburn

Cheers, Dave Reyburn aka “HoverTrekker”

Finally the hovercraft racing season has begun!!

Over here we enjoyed a beautiful weather weekend of racing in Michigan, the same weekend the Magnolls farm racing was happening over there. We were unable to get the 3G phone connection to work so the live broadcast was not possible, and as things were, we were all too busy trying to survive to watch any racing on the internet.

I finally went “swimming” for the first time! I have come out of the craft on land several times but never in the water. That was crazy!! My fan exploded (for reasons unknown at the time) followed by instant loss of lift, going sideways at speed, then instantly thrown into the water. Tony Broad explained it to me like this: “noise/water/cold/silence/bubbles in that order”. Why didn’t anyone ever explain this to me? I would add “shock, confusion, darkness, gasping for air” to the list. I think it should be part of the new driver orientation - it’s not a matter of if, but when it will happen to you.

I was driving my son’s craft the “Stealth” which is mostly “plow free”, so was definitely not expecting to go swimming. I had planned on driving my new Raptor which had arrived three weeks prior in kit form, and despite many nights working until 2am I was unable to get it ready to race in time. Oh well, the pressure’s off now as the next race isn’t for a few months. I have to say I have enjoyed

JUNE 23-24 Hackett Lakes

highly acclamed supplied by local Nottingham band ‘The Score’.

Straight after fighting for first position off the grid, you will face Hackett’s Chicane, a tight water turn that will test even the best of racers. Following will be a stretch that drivers will hit speeds up to 80mph across water ending with ‘Turnbull’s turn’ - a hairpin that needs a tight turn after decelerating from top speed. We then face ‘The Wall Of Death’ which is one of the most exciting spectacle on the circuit for spectators as they get a much better idea of the speed and adrenaline we all love so much. They then get to see all craft take the leap of faith, this is a blind summit and deep decent at full speed for water entry, expect to see some swimmers! We then race past start grid to ‘Bermuda Triangle’ - Here we expect more than one driver to disappear as the tight 45 degree turn at speed will prove to be more mysterious than the real thing... Rescue craft at the ready.

One mile past the National Sports Centre, Adbolton Lane, Nottingham, NG12 2LU

The Midlands Branch are proud to welcome you back to Hacketts for round four of the British Championship after the success of the last years inaugral event, we return to ‘Do-It-Again’. To all those that couldn’t make it last year, you’ll be happy to know that it is just over the hedge from The Big Lake so no one should get lost.

After Saturdays racing, you are all invited to share a beer a the bar, reliving the days events and listen to the evenings entertainment, the

Hovercraft World Championship12-16 September 2012 in Germany

The next World Championship for our sport will be held in Saalburg, Germany. The race course already saw two European Championships. Now we hope to welcome drivers from all over the world from 12. to 16.September!

The location is close to the “Schleizer Dreieck”, a worldwide well-known motorcycle racecourse. Therefore we expect thousands of motorsport enthusiasts for our World Championship. We already found several good sponsors. Further we made pre-events for the media to draw more attention to the World Championship and our sport.

And we offer more than just sport: We already make plans for a big Bavarian party (Oktoberfest) on Friday, 14.09. in the main tent. We ordered a special band named “The Hunis”, we are sure it will be a lot of fun for everybody. On Saturday night we plan a big driver’s party, including a fantastic live band, of course. Don’t miss it!

The venueThe town Saalburg is closely located to Schleizer Dreieck, the famous motorcycle racing since 1923. It is the oldest natural circuit in Germany. There are races held for the IDM series, for example, Superbike or sidecar. The international renowned

motorsport racetrack Sachsenring is only 80 kilometers away; stars like Valentino Rossi (ITA) or Stefan Bradl (DE) fighting there for points of the international MotoGP. The perfect surrounding for the Hovercraft World Championship 2012, thousands of enthusiastic motorsport fans will make a pilgrim to Saalburg.

In the eastern part of Thuringia is the “Thuringian Slate Mountains / Upper Saale.” This very charming area attracts thousands of tourists and vacationers. Vast forests, sleepy villages and the dam shape the unique

landscape idyll, which is hard to resist one.

If you need any support or if you have any question regarding hotels etc., please, don‘t hesitate to contact us through [email protected].

You will find a lot of information and news on our official website www.hovercraft-wm2012.de.Hope to see you in September!
