gaming newsPlay Cards and Win a rZr 4-Wheeler!

Cliff Castle Casino Hotel is currently run-ning 4-Wheelin’ and Dealin’, a Blackjack and Poker promotion through August 12.

This exciting promotion gives card play-ers the exclusive opportunity to win cash and the Verde Valley’s very first Special Edition 2011 Robby Gordon Polaris Ranger RZR 4-wheeler.

And qualifying to win couldn’t be easier! Poker and Blackjack players are encouraged to come in to the casino any day until August 12 to earn entries. Entries are awarded for suited Blackjacks dealt to players or dealers as well as time spent play-ing Poker, so the more you play, the more entries you can earn and the better your chances are of taking home a brand new 2011 Polaris Ranger. Plus, players can earn double entries every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday during this promotion!

On Friday, August 12 at 7pm the Grand Prize Winner will be randomly drawn as the newest owner of a Polaris Ranger.

Then stick around and keep playing after

the Grand Prize Drawing because every hour between 7:30 and 11:30pm one Blackjack or Poker player actively playing during the time of that drawing will win $150 cash.

Guests must be 21 or older to participate. Please play responsibly.

For more information - Call 800.381.SLOT, visit cliffcastlecasinohotel.com or stop by the Castle Club.

Cliff Castle Casino Hotel is located north of Phoenix, just off I-17 at exit 289 in Camp Verde.

been faced with the same decisions for over a century. But no more! Triple Attack Blackjack has arrived at

Wild Horse Pass, Lone Butte and Vee Quiva Casinos, adding an exhilarating twist to this classic game of chance and skill through an innovative betting structure that allows players to make multiple wagers within a single hand.

Triple Attack Blackjack gives players the option to raise their initial wager not once, but twice within the play of a single hand.

The first attack in Triple Attack Blackjack is the initial wager placed before the hand is dealt.

The second attack takes place when the dealer com-pletes the deal of the first card to each player.

The third and final attack is undertaken when the dealer’s “Up card” is revealed, offering a 3rd and final opportunity to wager.

This unique game includes the opportunity to:Place multiple bonus wagersGet a guaranteed win for any “21” a player receives

you, and you don’t bust - is an automatic WIN!)Plan your attack at Vee Quiva Casino, Lone Butte Casino

cover story

On Tuesday, May 31st Fort McDowell Casino landed quite an impression with the unveiling of their newly acquired helicopter to VIP guests and media. Upon entering the convention wing of the Radisson Fort McDowell Scottsdale Resort and Casino, guests were met with calming silence. As the crowd neared closer toward the hall, the murmur of buzzing excitement grew. Guests were greeted at the doors with Fort McDowell branded gift bags and the anticipation of what was hidden beneath the large black cover atop the helicopter.

In the interim, guests could peruse their personal gift bags. Each bag was filled with Fort McDowell Casino branded merchandise that included a Special Edition Collectible coffee mug that boasted a photograph of the new helicopter, to provide a preview and memorable favor of the night’s festivities. Once inside the hall, dimly lit in a golden glow, guests could retreat to standing cocktail tables and enjoy the drink of their choice.

The event also provided attendees with carving stations with a choice of roast beef, turkey breast and baked ham plus a buffet line with savory meat skewers and an impressive array of cheese plat-ters. Guests could enjoy their food and drinks at one of many tables adorned with beautiful floral centerpieces that included a photo of the new Fort McDowell Chopper!

The focal point of the room was undoubtedly the remarkable ice sculpture emblazoned with the Fort McDowell logo, which sat center stage above a delicious caramel lined cake amidst the room of party-goers. The ambiance of the room was complemented by the popular musical styling of Chris Putrino.

Player Services Manager, Gwen Bahe, kicked off the presentation of the evening, speaking on behalf of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and Fort McDowell Casino. Acknowledgments and congratulations were extended to those who had so successfully helped create the event. The crowd erupted in gracious applause, only briefly ceasing the subtleties of the evening.

Bruce Haffner of 3TV, the celebrity guest and renowned pilot of the chopper, then took the stage to a thunderous ovation.

Promotion Equity: If two casinos are offering the same video

poker game (this includes identical game names and pay schedules) select the casino that’s offer-ing promotional event tickets based on your play. Obviously, the more tickets you have, the greater the odds of winning the prize. I call this concept your equity in the drawing. To further increase your chances select the game with the lowest variance, or risk to your bankroll. (I have included removable variance tables in my book for the most popular video poker games in Arizona casinos.) By choosing a low variance game you’ll earn more entry tickets on the same bankroll.

HigH ProgrEssivEs:It always surprises me when I’m in a casino with

progressive games that are identical other than the progressive jackpot and I see players not even checking the amounts. Of course you’ll select the one with the largest progressive. That way when you “get lucky” and catch a royal flush you’ll be paid more.

Worried about the $1,200 threshold that triggers a W-2G for you with a matching copy to IRS? Don’t. In Arizona you can fade your wins against your losses on your tax return when you itemize. This is a very friendly state for gamblers since many other states demand a piece of the action, even when you’re an overall loser for the year.

amblers as a group may have a number of shortcomings, but being dull or boring sure isn’t one of them. As a matter of

fact they tend to be analytical about gaming issues; count on them to state it like they see it, even when it’s a far cry from diplomatic.

Take, for example, a guy who was annoyed by another blogger who kept arguing that it didn’t matter what game you selected since luck was the main ingredient in determining whether you were a winner or loser. Exasperated, the person who was correctly trying to make a point regarding long-term odds wrote: “Why not just go to the casino all the time since you never know when you’re walk-ing around lucky?”

Although sarcastic, the comment also struck me as accurate and funny. After all, you can drive yourself nuts continuously switching machines or your timing in hopes of getting the “no brainer” hand. Regardless of all the hocus pocus behavior, you’re still not going to alter or outrun the odds by moving to a different device. Make no mistake about it - playing musical machines can’t hurt either, as long as both the game names and the pay schedule are identical. And that brings me to the important issue of; when is it a good idea to visit your favorite Arizona casino.

multiPlE Points: Most casinos offer multiple points during

slow times, like weekdays. Since your points are redeemable for cash or comps, this is an excellent time to play. You will want to take a few minutes to check the pay schedule before depositing money since these may change from time-to-time. Rarely do multiple point promotions make up the deficiency caused by a downgraded pay table. For example, if you’re used to playing 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6 JOB) and you notice it’s been changed to 8/6 JOB the extra points probably won’t make it a better play then 9/6 JOB without multiple points. To be sure, use the system explained in my book, The Video Poker Edge, to determine the ER (expected return.) after adding the value of the multiple points.

quitting timE: Regardless of the enticements you should never

gamble more than you can afford to lose. Most of us have unhappy memories of the $200 turkey courtesy of our friendly casino. When your allotted bankroll is gone then you should leave in spite of feeling lucky.

Final tHougHts: Sometimes retrospective thoughts about luck,

both good and bad, can do a real number on your psyche. For example, I once had to wait an hour at a casino for my pager to go off for a carry-out order. While waiting I got a royal and many quads. Turned out the buzzer was defective. It could have just as easily been a hundred dollar salad. My point is there is no way to determine whether or not you’ll get lucky. So the best system to increase your odds is to make sure you have sound reasons for timing your casino visits. That way you’ll have more chances to get lucky without busting your budget.

a “FanTasy” Comes TrueArizona Lottery players are winning BIG with

Fantasy 5!One player only purchases tickets three times a

week, but that didn’t stop him from seeing dollar signs in the amount of $207,000 in drawing back in March. He purchased his ticket at the 7-Eleven located at 35th Avenue and Thomas Road.

Also in March, another player won $50,000 – and although this player usually buys Quick Picks, this time he decided to try his parents’ numbers and was thrilled when he won the jackpot. He enjoys playing Fantasy 5 two days a week regard-

he’s in The moneyA Tolleson man redeemed his $100,000 winning

I’m in the Money Scratchers ticket at the Arizona Lottery office back in April.

He purchased the winning ticket, not near his west side home, but on the extreme other side of the valley at a Circle K located at 6901 E. Indian School Road in Scottsdale.

The winner has been a regular lottery player since he was 18 and living in California.

He prefers the $10 tickets, most likely because of the higher payouts. His favorite Scratchers games are I’m in the Money and $100 Million

loTTery Pool hiTs For $200,000!Ron is the Lottery pool member who has the

duty is to buy Powerball tickets for a pool of nine players who work at the Electric and Water Utilities Company. And he always buys from the same store - the Multi-Mart, on Frontier Street in Eloy.

Each member of the pool contributes $10 a week, and Ronald purchases five boards for two draws. They use numbers consisting of ones that members of the pool have selected, as well as Quick Picks. For the Feb. 16th Powerball drawing, the winning board consisted of numbers belonging to one of members. This pool member had picked five numbers, worth $200,000, but everyone jok-ingly gave her a hard time because she didn’t have the winning Powerball number.

One pool member is responsible for checking the tickets, and as soon as she realized that the pool had won, she told the members who were at work. Of course, the majority of the pool members

didn’t believe they had really won. Everyone then ran to their computers to check the numbers for themselves.

The pool has a few rules they stand by: new hires at the company can join the Lottery pool if they wish; fellow co-workers who either dropped out or chose not to join will have to form their own Lottery pool. In fact, one former pool member said, “I never should have dropped out – can I get back in?”

Each member of the pool received $22,222 before taxes. With regard to how each of them were going to spend their winnings; one member had his eye on a new computer system, another was going to get a new central air conditioner for his home, another was going to save two-thirds and give the rest to his wife - others had not yet decided.

One thing is for certain, they will continue to play Powerball, Mega Millions and The Pick.

Cash Spectacular. He knew as soon as he com-pleted scratching the ticket that he had a winner. He didn’t even bother to have it scanned at the store, instead he came straight to the Lottery office with two of his closest friends. As a matter of fact, his friends seemed more excited than he was; he just took his big win in stride.

The big winner works as a Student Service Counselor, but his ambition is to become a hip hop recording artist. He works hard as a solo artist right now and has been doing so for the last 12 years. And, of course, he’ll continue to play the Lottery.

less of the jackpot size. His ticket was purchased at the Sunshine Market on North 7th Street.

Two April winners – one for $153,000 and the other for $54,000 never miss the chance to buy their Quick Pick tickets for all six weekly drawings. The tickets for these two drawings winners were purchased from the Circle K located at 3550 E. Main Street in Mesa and the other from the Fry’s Food Store located at 20220 N. 59th Ave., Glendale.

All of the winners plan to share some of their winnings with their families and plan to keep play-ing Fantasy 5.

HORsIN’ AROuND

ICE, ICE BABYby BrianMulligan

Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast line-maker for 17 years for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily.

e came, he saw, he conquered, but Ruler on Ice got plenty of help on his way to the Belmont Stakes score,

notably a sealed, sloppy track, a speed-conducive surface and a horrible trip for the favorite, Animal Kingdom.

The 49:08 and 1:14.51 splits were very similar to the pace that allowed last year’s Belmont winner, Drosselmeyer, to win going away, as Ruler On Ice recorded a career-best 100 Beyer figure. Drosselmeyer was clocked in 2:31.57 on a fast track, with a 94 Beyer, while Ice finished in 2:30.88 on Saturday. Ruler on Ice was wearing blinkers for the first time, which his trainer, Kelly Breen, said was important to get the gelding to focus.

Breen: “(Blinkers) was part of the maturity. He didn’t mature as fast as we wanted to. He’s already a gelding, so we can’t castrate him again, so we put blinkers on. “The first time out of the gate, Jose (jockey Valdivia) was on him. He was still goofing off, and didn’t break great. Last week, he broke right, and it’s like sometimes, the bulb just goes on. It was a perfect storm of things going right, and that’s how we got here.”

For Animal Kingdom, it couldn’t have been a worse start. The Derby winner bumped with Mucho Macho Man a few strides after the start, causing him to stumble badly, and Johnny Velazquez to lose the left iron. Velazquez said he had been forced to ask more from Animal Kingdom than he had wanted, particularly between the half-mile pole and the quarter-pole.

The look of Animal Kingdom’s trainer Graham Motion on the telecast told the whole story. It was gut-wrenching watching him and his family agonized over the bad luck at the break.

Motion: “It looks like he was pinched by the horses on either side. The horse almost fell down. Johnny couldn’t believe the horse stayed up. He lost his iron. It took him until halfway around the turn to get his foot back in the iron. It’s disappointing not to give the horse a chance to run his race.

Animal Kingdom finished behind Nehro and Shackleford, who were 4th and 5th respectively.

Valdivia is a much-underrated rider. Bettors get their money worth when they gamble on him.

Those that believed in Ruler On Ice got paid $51.50, $26 and $13.60. Stay Thirsty finished second, $19.40 and $10.80. Brilliant Speed was third. A $2 exacta paid $928, the $2 trifecta $8,268 and the superfecta came back over $74,000

Ruler on Ice has only run one poor race in his career, and that was his debut, when he was green. He was wide in his two prior starts before the Belmont, and he has a right to go on and have a very nice career, as the blood in the family is stellar. Ice’s half-sister, Champagne d’Oro, is a double Grade 1 winner, who has banked nearly $600,000, taking 3 of her 16 starts. The logical thing for Ice to do is to get some rest, freshen up and point to the Travers at Saratoga.

The connections of Animal Kingdom have already indicated that they will likely shoot for a rest, then a grass race, possibly the Arlington Million in Chicago.

As for Breen, he is no one-hit wonder. He has been a fixture in New Jersey for a long time. He is currently tied for third in the Monmouth Park standings, and 50% of his starters have finished in the money. For his career, Breen is a 16% (wins) trainer, and his starters have earned over $15 million. Bettors can look for Breen to be live with first-timers, as he is 18% with horses he debuted the last 5 years, but even more potent with runners making their second career start at 25%, in a 117-runner sample.

The tip-off for Ruler on Ice was the blinkers, and in the last 5 years, Breen has popped at 26% with the first-time blinkers angle. He doesn’t claim a lot of horses, but he is 20% with first-time claimers in that same time frame.

So, for those skeptics who did not have this horse in their bets and believe Ruler on Ice is just a “one hit wonder” Chill Out!

“TIP” (THE DEALER)Editor’s note: Over the years Arizona Player has received dozens of

articles from writers who felt the information they sent in would be of inter-est to our readers, and from time to time, we have published many of those articles. That leads to this next contribution, an observation from a poker dealer -- who will simply be referred to as “TIP” (the Dealer)

Here’s the article…and in the words of legendary writer and narrator Rod Serling - “Submitted for your approval”

Poker players like numbers, “Statistics.” I am sure you’ve heard players or dealers mention the probability of your “Pocket Pair” holding up in an “All In” situation.

I’d like to humbly submit some numbers of mine for your consideration; an average dealer in a 30-minute “sit-down” deals, let’s say, 15 to 25 hands. For easy math, let’s use 20 hands per down. OK, 20 hands per down, with four betting rounds (in most cases) per hand. That leaves us with 80 (20 X 4 = 80).

Now we must take into account Murphy’s Law, which states: “Anything that can go wrong -- Will go wrong.”

Bringing this into the equation, many “Super Senior” poker players, or those new “shy” poker players, are going to be playing about every hand down to the river, and again because of Murphy’s Law -- they are going to be seated in the #3 and #7 seats.

Why those seats? Because the dealer has trouble reaching those corner seats, due to the length of the dealer’s arms, combined with the typical size of a poker table.

So, where is our math now? Let’s see: 20 hands per down multiplied by 4 betting rounds per hand equals 80, then multiply that by 2, because the #3 and #7 seats seem to be playing most every hand to the river, and typically don’t push their bets out on the felt, where the dealer can reach them.

Therefore, 80 hands multiplied by 2 (twist and stretch your spine to the #3 and #7 seats every time the dealer pulls in bets) and we end with 160 times in a 30-minute down a dealer has to twist his spine to do his job.

Now, let’s assume that in an 8-hour shift, the dealer works (on a slow day) 6 of those 8 hours. That’s 160 opportunities every 30 minutes to twist, while overstretching their back. Multiply this by 12 (two 30-minute downs for each 6 hours worked), and we come up with 160 X 12 = 1,920. Nearly 2,000 oppor-tunities to twist your spine out of whack every day -- and that’s a slow dealer on a slow day! Ask your local chiropractor what the odds are that this person will end up with a back injury?

So, when you’re at the table, and your dealer seems a tad “all-in” or out-of-sorts, try to keep this simple bit of math in mind. Maybe even go so far as to consider them a person with a family and a job to do – a job that can be physi-cally demanding at that. And please -- Pretty Please, with Aces on top -- push your bets to where your dealer can reach them.

Thanks for listening, “TIP” (the Dealer) Footnote from Arizona Player Publisher Phil Scudella:

Recently I was in the #10 seat in a 3-6 game for a few hours, and con-stantly helped the dealer by moving #7’s bet closer (#7 never realized why I kept doing it). I also observed a “super senior” who played nearly every hand that entire time and caught the “river” card many times to beat me and others. Then, one hand after catching a huge win, she kept looking at her cards – then she mucked them! That move brought this comment from one of the regulars at the table.

“I’ll pay 5 bucks to see those cards.” The dealer just smiled and shoved them into the muck, as the table burst out in laughter.

TJ’s bLACKJACK CORNER

by TJJorgensen

Blackjack EtiquEttE

T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tourna-ment play, both locally and internationally. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tourna-ment players in the world. He is the author of the book, "Beating the Casino at Their Own Game," available through his web site www.freewebs.com/tjsblackjack-corner or by e-mail [email protected]

lackjack Etiquette, by definition, is an

unwritten code of common courtesies for Blackjack players. Gamblers, as a

general rule, are extremely superstitious, and if there is a sudden change in their luck for the worst, any new element will get the blame.

There are no mathematical statistics to back up any players’ claims that a certain event will change the flow of cards from good to bad. However, if you want to avoid being blamed for other players’ bad luck, follow these simple practices, and you will always be a welcome addition to any blackjack game.1. Ask Permission.

When approaching a game already in progress, ask the other players seated at the table if they mind if you join. This is the polite way to enter a game. That way, if the cards turn for the worse, the other players can only blame themselves. If players have been winning prior to your arrival, and you fail to ask permission, be ready for some nasty glares, and evil looks, if the cards turn bad. The other play-ers may not say anything, but trust me they are not thinking happy thoughts about you. If you sit down, and the very first hand the dealer receives black-jack, I would hate to be you. With the addition of a new player mid-shoe, the others players will blame you, if the flow of cards changes for the worse.

2. Don’t split 10s without asking. There are very few things that you can do as a

blackjack player that will draw such an adverse reaction from the other players at the table, as splitting a pair of 10s. If you feel the need to do so, ask the other players if they mind. That way, if you get their consent, and it does cause them to lose, at least they all won’t join together and form a lynch mob on your behalf. If you have a strong desire to split a winning hand of 20, you might want to wait until you are the only player at the table. I personally am of the opinion that it is your money, play however you want. However, the majority of blackjack players don’t share my view.3. Don’t be rude.

If you have the desire to smoke at the table, at least ask the other players if they mind. I was playing once with a delightful elderly gentleman, who was wheelchair bound, and required oxygen. A new player was guilty of one of the most rude and most-inconsiderate acts I have ever witnessed in some 30 years of playing. He sat down beside the elderly gentleman and lights up a cigarette. It’s obvious that the man requires pure oxygen to sustain life, and this idiot is blowing smoke in his face. I thought the man was going to die right there. Please, use some common sense.4. Tip the Dealer.

The Blackjack dealers are paid minimum hourly wage, so the majority of their income is from tips. If you have a winning session, take care of the

dealer. They will be much friendlier the next time you see them. You can also place a small bet next to yours for the dealer, many times the dealer will wait to try to convince you what the correct play might be, hit or stay – some dealers will even ask, “are you sure you want to hit that?” hoping the player would make the right choice- after all they have a stake in the final outcome, and will almost always “thank you” for the bet – win or lose.5. Playing 2 Hands.

If there is a spot open next to your seat, and you decide to play two hands, it is always polite to ask the other players if they mind. Again, this is a good idea in case the dealer turns up a blackjack, after you add the additional hand. If you play two hands, continue playing two until the end of the shoe. If you go back and forth between one and two, you will be blamed for changing the cards if they turn ugly.

If you adhere to these common courtesies when you play blackjack, it will create a friendly atmo-sphere at your table, and that always makes the game more enjoyable. Until next time, I hope you play winning Blackjack.

He is also a cantankerous drunk who does not want Mattie along on the trip. She is just as stubborn as he is and joins him anyway. They are joined by a Texas Ranger (Matt Damon) who is after the same man, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). Ethan and Joel Coen wrote and directed this brilliant adaptation of the novel and it is vastly superior to the 1969 film. The writing is crisp and spot on to the time period, the acting is unbelievably good and the action is engrossing. Even if you are not a fan of Westerns pick up this multi-award winning film.

sUPeR 8 Joe and his friends sneak out and meet at the local train depot to film a scene for the monster movie they are making when until suddenly the train is derailed throwing train cars everywhere. The next day the train wreck

is big news, it turns out it was an Air Force train carrying important cargo. Over the next few days people start disappearing, there is weird and random destruction with odds things going missing. The local deputy (Kyle Chandler) is stonewalled by Col Nelec but he knows something is going on. This is a unique film that combines a sweet coming of age story with a thriller monster story and does it brilliantly. You care about the characters while being kept on the edge of your seat. Super 8 is a truly great movie that is an instant classic on the level of The Goonies and E. T.

X-MeN: FiRst Class The story of how Charles Xavier became friends with Eric Lehnsher,

founded the X-Men and they became Professor X and Magneto. It started during World War II when young Eric showed a talent that was recognized and cruelly fostered by a madman, Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon). Meanwhile, Charles is becoming an expert in mutant genetics. In 1962 Eric is hunting down Shaw when he runs

into Xavier. Realizing that Shaw posses a greater threat to humanity they team up to stop him. Shaw has a group of powerful mutants so Xavier and Eric set out to recruit their own army of mutants. It is all set against

the tension of the Cuban missile crisis. Set as a prequel to the previous X-Men films there are a few puzzling moments and a couple of eye-catching cameos. A fun film with lots of action this is the best superhero ‘origin’ movie I have seen.

He spoke passionately about his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot, and how he achieved it through a career in the TV news business which spanned back to the 90s. His emotional story solidifies the ideal that anyone can achieve their dreams if they invest the work and ambition.

The partnership between Haffner and Fort McDowell had been in the works for a little over three years. He went into detail of how the early talks became a reality. Flying the helicopter from Texas, Haffner detailed the jour-ney and the increasing excitement he had while delivering it to The Valley. With the connection of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and Fort McDowell Casino, a special traditional blessing was bestowed upon Bruce and the news chopper which Bruce described as, “the one of the most honorable moments of his career.”

Following the uplifting words shared by Haffner and others, the party moved outside, where a dazzling Arizona sunset blanketed the mysteriously sheathed chopper. The black draping was then removed - uncovering the helicopter beneath, embellished with the vibrant Fort McDowell branding that will surely be visible to everyone as it makes its way across The Valley. As the applause and plethora of pictures had commenced, those in attendance were in agreement - the unveiling of the Fort McDowell News Chopper was a rousing success.

A State Trooper was cruising down a road that was known as “Lovers’ Lane,” on his way back to the station, nearing the end of his shift at midnight, when he sees a couple in a car, with the interior light brightly glowing.

He carefully approaches the car to get a closer look, and spots a young man behind the wheel, reading a magazine.

Then he notices a young woman in the rear seat, filing her fingernails. Puzzled by this surprising situation, the trooper walks to the car and gently raps on the driver’s window.

The young man lowers his window. “Uh, yes sir…Officer?”The trooper asks: “What are you doing?”

The young man says: “Well, Officer, I’m reading a magazine.”The Trooper then looks toward the woman in the back seat and says: “And

the young lady...what is she doing?”The young man shrugs: “Sir, I believe she’s filing her fingernails.”The trooper is now confused. A young couple, alone in a car, at night on

Lovers’ Lane -- and nothing sexual happening! The trooper asks: “What’s your age, young man?”The young looks up and says: “I’m 22, sir.”The trooper asks, pointing to the back seat: “And her…..what’s her age?”The young man looks at his watch and replies: “She’ll be 18 in exactly…7

minutes.”
