All Things ClassicalThis summer, WGBH is celebrating classical music in a big way: on television, on our 99.5 All Classical radio service (also online at 995allclassical.org), out in the community and here in our Brighton studios.

And what better way to launch this celebration than with an all-star program on WGBH 2 (and PBS stations around the country) marking the 125th anniversary of the Boston Pops (see page 14). During the last 80 years, just three conductors have led this Boston treasure: Arthur Fiedler, John Williams and Keith Lockhart. Each has served as a remarkable ambassador,

offering up accessible pieces that resonate with veteran listeners while also welcoming new fans into the classical tent.

“Keith is a great curator and guide,” says WGBH Radio’s Jon Solins, program director for 99.5 All Classical. “That’s why we’re also

delighted to present ‘Keith’s Classical Corner’ weekday mornings with 99.5 host Laura Carlo. He shares the story behind his ‘pick of the day,’ helping listeners connect more deeply with the music.” This month and next, we’re featuring the Pops on 99.5, including a live broadcast of the orchestra’s popular July 4th concert from the Esplanade, guaranteeing you a front-row seat for the musical fireworks.

Our new all classical radio service is dramatically expanding our opportunities to showcase the cultural riches at our doorstep. On June 10, the 99.5 team heads north to bring you the opening-night premiere of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival from Rockport’s new Shalin Liu Performance Center. In July, we head to Tanglewood to bring you all three Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts live from the Koussevitsky Music Shed, every weekend throughout the summer. “WGBH has more than doubled the number of BSO concerts we’re featuring each year—from 26 to 62,” says Jon. “We’ve always wanted to provide a larger stage for the BSO. With 99.5 All Classical, now we can.”

And speaking of firsts, mark your calendar for Saturday, June 19 for our 99.5 All Classical Music Festival at our WGBH studios (see page 2). To date, more than 55,000 people have come through our doors for screenings, tours, concerts and discussions. This festival takes WGBH’s role as a public convener to a whole new level. I hope you’ll join our classical hosts and me for an after-noon of performances, presentations and salons by area vocal, chamber and contemporary music groups. You’ll also get a chance to connect with some of the wonderful music organizations we partner with throughout the year.

Tearing It DownExplore how the historic and dramatic November 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall helped end the Cold War without a shot being fired. The Wall examines the lives of ordinary people caught up in Cold War politics: a young father forced to tunnel beneath the wall to reunite his family; a teenager whose love of pop culture got him in deep trouble with the state; a student activist helping make a peaceful revolution while facing down tanks; and a young man broken by the ruthless

prestigious competition for harp. Roughly 30 players from around the world compete for first prize, which will almost certainly catapult the win-ner into a career as a first-class musi-cian. The winner of the 2007 competi-tion, for example, is now principal harpist with the Bolshoi Ballet. Each performer must learn and master 13 separate compositions, including an entire concerto for orchestra and harp. It also presents the parallel world of the Negro Leagues, which thrived in the shadow of the Major Leagues. The inning culminates with the greatest showdown in the history of the Negro Leagues: Satchel Paige, arguably the best pitcher ever, against Josh Gibson, “the black Babe Ruth,” in the Negro League World Series. 89.7 WGBH’s expanded focus on local news, issues and analysis means some new voices on our air, but also old friends. Phillip Martin who joined the 89.7 WGBH news team in March, was one of the original producers involved in the development of WGBH’s award-winning interna-tional news series The World. During the last decade, Martin has worked in some of public radio’s hottest spots—as a producer of NPR’s On Point with Tom Ashbrook, as a senior editor at NPR West, and as NPR’s first and only National Race Relations correspondent. Now he’s back at WGBH as an investigative reporter for 89.7 while continuing his work on The World’s Color Initiative, a series of reports that examine complex global issues related to color.

A former Nieman Fellow at Harvard, Martin has won numerous awards, including a National Association of Black Journalists Award for best radio documentary for his NPR series South Africa: Ten Years Later. Now a resident of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Martin has a master’s degree in law and diplomacy from Tufts University, and studied international protection of human rights at Harvard Law School.

WGBH’s Jen Goebel recently caught up with Martin to talk about his new role at WGBH.

Q How did you get your start in radio?

A I started as a commentator for NPR, working on issues of international development and

child welfare worldwide. One of my first assign-ments was in South Africa, at the time of the dis-solution of apartheid and the election of Nelson Mandela. It was a fascinating moment in history. My interest has been in reporting on issues of race beyond the traditional paradigms of black and white to really examine ethnic conflict.

Q What do you like about working in radio?

A Radio is my first love. I love the fact that we have to imagine what we’re hearing. I was

recently reporting from Turkey for The World on the attempted coup, and in my reports I described the call to prayer in Istanbul and the sky—things you can do in radio that you wouldn’t on TV because it would be visual—and obvious. Radio forces you to write better, and more descriptively.

Q What brought you back to WGBH?

A When 89.7 WGBH expanded its role in news, they got in touch with me to see if I was

interested in doing investigative reporting—and I was. It’s an extraordinary opportunity to do in-depth reporting in an area that’s so rich with stories. I love the idea of working on local issues. It’s been said a million times, and I think it’s true, that before you can know the world, you really have to know what’s right in front of you. WGBH is clearly intent on making an impact with a focus on local stories, and I think we will do that.

Q How does your extensive international reporting experience play into your

local reporting?

A In 2010, already I’ve been to Japan, the Philippines, and Turkey, all as a reporter on

the Color Initiative for The World. I’m also working on a series on world religions for The World, and I’ll continue doing that even as I do special reports for 89.7 WGBH. I think that having a wider and universal perspective is useful in any reporting.In doing a series on New England fisheries regula-tions called “30 Years of Days at Sea” (which will air in July), I noticed parallels between what’s going on here and what I saw in other places.

I was in Malta in October, and just as I was leaving, the European Union imposed its annual two-month moratorium on fishing. To see the impact on the fishing fleet in Malta was quite interesting, especially when compared to what’s going on here in New England. Fishermen here and fishermen there complain about the same things: quotas, restrictions and government regulation.

Q What do you think of 89.7 WGBH’s format change?

A I like having two public radio news stations in the city. I think it pushes everyone’s game

a lot higher, and it increases interest in public radio. And I would even say it’s high time, pun intended.

Q What would you like to see happen in public radio in the future?

A I’d like to expand our reach. Public radio is an incubator of sorts, and can help develop

all types of voices—from different nationalities, religions, and backgrounds that ultimately serve to bring in a more diverse audience.

solo—I had to jump up and flip the record to hear the rest of the move-ment. For a long time I thought there was supposed to be a big break in the symphony at that point. I was surprised to find out that on other recordings the musicians just kept right on playing!

The other MMS recording I remember was a lovely performance of the Mozart Clarinet Quintet. I was just beginning to play the instrument myself, and this gorgeous piece made me think that all the squeaking and puffing might somehow be worth it. I didn’t stick with the clarinet, but to this day that Quintet is just about my favorite piece of all.

Recently I learned that the MMS was the brainchild of David and Sam Josefowitz, brothers who made their own recordings in Europe and then issued them here on 10-inch discs, in part because these were easier to mail than the standard 12-inch size. The affordable and convenient subscription system they developed played a big role in bringing LPs of classical music into the households of post-World War II America. Awkward movement breaks aside, I’m glad they did.

I listened to classical music on the radio when I was a kid, but I was fortunate enough to have some classical record-ings as well. My parents, freshly-minted suburbanites in the 1950s, bought a new record player for the house and signed up for the Musical Masterpiece Society (MMS), a service that offered classical recordings on a subscription

basis. These would arrive in the mail on unusual 10-inch discs, packaged in a standard album cover with very formal images of the great composers as a border and the title of the piece in the middle. The discs might be red or blue, and sometimes they were even transparent…very exotic items for a youngster used to stolid old black!

I remember lying on the living room floor on weekend mornings and listening to these records as I watched the sunbeams streaming in through the windows. Two of them made lasting impressions. I loved the bold brassy opening of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and the way the different orchestral choirs tossed the music back and forth. But most of all, I remember that in order to fit the whole symphony on a 10-inch disc, the second movement was interrupted just after the opening oboe
