In their community, the role of the Livingston Food Pantry of Park County is more than just distributing boxes of food out the door, according to Michael McCormick, Executive Director. As well as providing supple-mental food to their cli-ents, Michael explained that the food pantry par-ticipates in the commu-nity through unique edu-cation and nutrition pro-grams and all forms of available assistance for clients. They partnered with Farms for Families to em-phasize local, sustainable production and use part of their farm to grow fresh produce for distri-bution. In 2009 they dis-tributed 2,000 lbs. of beans, onions, eggplant, beets, and more from the farm and are expanding the project in 2010 to

include winter squash and a hardy sweet potato strain, both for distribution to clients and for sale to local food buyers and the farmer’s market. The pantry also has an in-town pantry garden with raised beds and plowed plots that are first offered to pantry cli-ents. Par-ticipating in-town gardeners grow their own food and can also sell their excess produce at the farmer’s market. Plots are also reserved for the local Big Brothers and Big Sisters clubs and for a “Children’s Garden” through the Sum-mer Lunch Program, which leads strong educational efforts with local schools to

help students understand more about the food they eat. In addition, Michael described arrangements to provide plots for the local mental health center and Counterpoint, a facility for the handicapped adults. This

includes handicap-accessible raised beds and long-handled tools for the wheelchair-bound Coun-terpoint resi-dents. To help

clients with little or no cook-ing knowledge, the Livingston Food Pantry hosts a “Crock Pot Day” at least once a quarter with collabo-ration from the MSU Exten-sion Office. Michael ex-plained that many clients “live out of cans and fast food bags,” so they chal-

If one of the 35-40 families that generally attend are interested in the recipe, they are given a print out. If they don’t have cooking facilities, they are given a crock pot donated by the community. The Livingston Food Pan-try distributes around 13,000 lbs. of food to 325 clients each month, has an exten-sive resource guide to all assistance programs available in Park County, and staff that is trained to help clients find whatever they need. As we move toward the halfway mark of 2010, we wanted to remind everyone of the importance of Monthly Activity Reporting (MARs). To date, your MAR submissions have helped to ensure that the FAM program and TEFAP are running smoothly. Based on the numbers you submit to the MFBN, we submit detailed reports to the MT Department of Health and Human Services that help demonstrate that the funding received for FAM and TEFAP directly benefits your clients. Your reporting efforts are help-ing you source food to pro-vide to the hungry in your community. Please help the MFBN provide the most accurate reports by partici-pating in the MAR forum online at www.insidemfbn.org/forum or by calling Megan ext. 235 or Jeff ext.232 if you have questions about your current reporting proce-

dures. Here are a few interesting facts gathered through your MAR submissions: Total # of clients served = 94,517 Total # of individual visits to Partner Agencies = 282,559 Average # of times each client received services in the past 4 months = 3 Total # of households served = 46,540 Total # of household visits to Partner Agencies = 148,880 Average # of times each household received ser-

We would like to thank everyone who attended this year's Montana Hunger Re-lief Forum. Each presenta-tion provided a great deal of information. If you were in attendance but did not have time to absorb all the information, or if you were unable to attend and would like to find out what we learned, please take a look at the Power Point presen-tations and handouts from each session at the forum posted at http://www.insidemfbn.org/2010MHRFMaterials. Again, thank you all for participating in a wonderful event. Every year we learn more about event planning and are grateful for your attendance and feedback. We hope that everyone was able to gather useful information and materials while also having the op-portunity to converse with other partners of the MFBN. Thank you again for your support and participa-tion in this event!

The Client Count Online Forum Topic You can now hone in on your Monthly Activity Reporting skills by participating in the monthly MAR forum at www.insidemfbn.org/forum. Each month we will post a scenario and partners will have the opportunity to complete an MAR form based on that scenario. Every partner agency that can complete the report without a single error, we will enter your name in a contest. Once all 6 scenarios have been completed we draw a winner from the pool of accurate reporters. So don’t miss this chance to win a few free goodies and master your MAR skills!

They expanded their services to in-clude a computer station, showers, elevator, and lend-ing library. The pantry has already seen an increase in new families and already has plans in mind for further utilizing their great new space.
