The Otomotif College (TOC) held its open day named the “OTTO Camp” at their main campus recently! This time around, everyone who attended had two pleasant surprises awaiting them at TOC’s campus – a rare Aston Martin GT4 Vantage (courtesy from TOC’s industry partner, S&D Motorsports) and TOC’s Go-Kart from Iru1 Racing Team were on display! Prospective students and their families were separated into several groups after listening to the Welcome and Introduction Talk and assigned a “Tour Guide” who took them to visit several stations on rotation. All visitors were also given the chance to try completing some hands-on tasks – giving insight to those contemplating on joining The Otomotif College.

Animal extinction is a serious issue that needs to be taken into

consideration for the sake of our future generation. This is why

conservation projects such as Go APE!, an Awareness Program

on Extinction, organized by final year students of IACT College

is essential as it provides the basic knowledge at a grassroots

level. In line with their Corporate Communications project,

these students took it upon themselves to raise awareness on

this subject by inviting 30 underprivileged children from Rumah

Philea for an educational cum charity event at Zoo Negara,

Kuala Lumpur! Kudos to all who participated and made a

difference! The children from Rumah Philea were also treated

to a hearty meal sponsored by KFC Holdings (Malaysia) Bhd,

prior to their trip to Zoo Negara – a big thank you goes out to

all our sponsors for their immense contribution!

Dance enthusiasts were treated to impeccable hip hop stunts at Mad2Max 2010, organised by HELP Matriculation Centre. Split into two parts (Mad2Max 2010 Hip Hop Dance Carnival and Mad2Max 2010 Hip Hop Inter-college Dance Competition) the crowd made full use of the dance workshops and were even treated to perfomances by local talents. Congratulations to TT-X (HELP University College and TAR College) comprising of Lam Ing Wei, Low Kah Hoe, Pu Shuan Zheun, Chong Wei Cheng and Mark Poh Chim Eam who bagged the first place prize, first runner up Rokusteps (TAR College and Malaysian Institute of Integrative Media) and to Max Identity (TAR College) who emerged as the second runner-up!

Interview with Representativesof Berklee College of Music

CP: Could you tell us about the judging and selection criteria?Michael Shaver: We try to take a holistic admissions approach so we’re looking at the past academics and we have a 15 minutes interview with all the students where we’re talking about their background, their goals for the future, why they want to pursue a career in music, why they want to study at Berklee things like that. Really trying to get to know them so that they’re not just a paper application or an audition number – we really want to take the time to know the students because we know that not every student wants to be a performer. So that’s why we also don’t just use an audition in the application process.

So we have the academics, the interview and an audition. We really try to treat the audition like it’s the student’s audition so we let them pick the song they want to chose, what style they want to do whether its rock, heavy metal, jazz, classical – whatever they want because we want the opportunity for the students to express what they do and not put them in a box. During the interview we touch on basics like music knowledge, sight reading, improvisation, their foundation in music and the final thing we look at is their online application. So we try to get the best picture of the student that we can. We have about 6 to 7 people who read all the interviews, applications and all that so it’s not just one person making a decision – it’s a committee having the input on the decision of who comes to Berklee.

The simplest way I can put it is that Berklee looks for the things that we can’t teach – we can teach students to read music, we can teach better technique but it’s really hard to teach passion, motivation, dedication, creativity and things like that – so that’s the stuff we really look for.

CP: How has the audition process been this year?Fernando Huergo: It’s been great, we’ve enjoyed it very much, we’ve seen some wonderful students, plenty of enthusiasm, a little nervousness but I think we have a lot of prospective students who want to go to Berklee and I think the general thing was the enthusiasm that they had and the passion we saw in them – they are great students and I wish we could let all of them study at Berklee.

CP: For those who don’t know, how many students are selected each semester?Michael Shaver: We have three semesters where a student can enter and our largest semester is in the Fall – that’s in September and we have about 1000 students who enter then. Students can also choose to start in Spring (January) or Summer (May) and those semesters have about 250 students each. In total that’s about fifteen hundred students a year, we receive over 7000 applications per year – so I’d say Berklee is competitive but not impossible to get in to.

CP: What do you think is the most exciting thing happening in music education today?Samuel Skau: I think there’s no one answer for it – it’s a combination of where technology is taking us, life today and not just music. When we talk about music and music careers from Berklee – it’s not limited to just music in the entertainment industry because music affects people in so many different ways and technology is a big part of it and there’s also a big shift in technology today which is reflected in Berklee whereby there’s been major updating of how courses are structured – the classes have to meet the demands of what’s in the market nowadays. A lot of it is to match the nature of the industry, how people are buying music – there’s so much that’s free on the Internet now – so how do you market and make a living doing music? There’s no one answer to it – but I keep coming back to technology.

Fernando Huergo: I think technology is making music education easier and accessible to everybody in the world. I think music technology is boosting music education all over the world.

CP: What can aspiring musicians look forward to in the music industry?Fernando Huergo: Well, I’m not sure but what I think they need to find is their creativity and passion in music and then worry about the industry. If there’s no passion, no need to be a musician then there’s no work. They have to work on their craft, on their music, practice hard and try to be the best musician they can and only then see how they can make a living which is a challenge but the industry doesn’t come first, first you have to be a strong musician, singer/songwriter or performer – I think that comes first.

CP: If you weren’t working in music, what would you guys be doing?Samuel Skau: I think I’d be in marketing or technologyFernando Huergo: I think I’d be doing something with literature Michael Shaver: I would say I would still be in the same arena that I’m in now which is working with high school students helping them choose which college/ university to go to.

CP: Words of advice for those thinking about getting into music?Michael Shaver: For it’s important to know that if music is really what you want to do and it’s really your passion – you can do it, you can make a living out of it, and you can enjoy it. Don’t let anybody discourage you – follow your dream and passion. The music industry is so dynamic that the craziest idea you might have, something that’s never done before – it’s very likely that that can happen in the music industry. The great thing about it is that you’re not bound by rules and things like that, it’s about being creative and thinking outside the box. So don’t give up.

The iconic Berklee College of Music in Boston USA conducts live auditions and interviews for students vying for a spot in the acclaimed music college around the world annually. In this region, the selection process is only held at the International College of Music (ICOM) Malaysia which is the only college in the region affiliated to Berklee. This year we had the chance to speak to Fernando Huergo (Associate Professor of the Bass Dept), Michael Shaver (Assistant Director of International Admissions) and Samuel Skau (Assistant Director of International Educational Programmes) about music and find out what they thought of this years applicants!

Pull & Bear celebrates youth with their latest collection and for the girls – we especially like Portobello as it takes us to the Italian coast of the 50s. There are tulip waists, subtle lace edging details, strapless and backless dresses. Floral patterns in pastel tones combine with multicolour stripes and are complemented by bright blues. Guys, look out for the Vicious collection as it oozes rebellion and rock and roll. We’re talking T-shirts, dungarees, check shirts, hats, jackets, leather jackets and waistcoats too!

Mash-ups are always great – especially when it comes to fashion. Zara’s Spring Summer 2010 collection (TRF Girls) shows us how you can mix biker chic with lace, androgynous with renaissance and even hippie with punk! POSTERS

MASCOTS

1998 - FrancePhoto of the official poster, shown to the press 23 November, for the French World Cup soccer matches which was held in Paris, in June/July 1998.The poster was designed by French Fabien Jouanneau.

D id you know that each FIFA World Cup since 1966 has had its own mascot? World Cup Willie; a lion sporting a Union Flag

jersey was the first ever mascot for the 1966 competition. Lets check out the stories behind some of these World Cup icons!

2010 - South AfricaThe official 2010 FIFA World Cup poster was unveiled on 23 November 2007 following a board meeting of the Local Organising Committee in Durban. The poster was designed by the South African creative agency Switch, who also created the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ emblem. The design beat three rivals in a public vote held throughout South Africa from 11 September to 30 September 2007.

2002 - Korea / JapanBased on the traditional Asian art of calligraphy (brush & ink drawing), the 2002 FIFA World Cup poster is a specially commissioned, collaborative effort by two artists from the host nations - Byun Choo Suk from Korea and Hirano Sogen from Japan – who spent two days together in the studio creating the new design. The poster features an image of a football pitch drawn in thick brushstrokes and the official emblem.

2006 - GermanyThe official poster of the 2006 FIFA World Cup was unveiled in Stuttgart on Thursday, 30 September 2004. The artwork depicts stars in the shape of a football in the night sky. The contribution designed by the Berlin agency, WE DO communication, beat four rivals in a public telephone vote throughout Germany, which earned EUR 15,645.45 for “6 villages for 2006”, the Official Charity Campaign organized jointly by FIFA and SOS Children’s Villages.

Footix, 1998The 1998 competition in France had a rooster (one of the national symbols of France) with the words “FRANCE 98” on the chest as its mascot. Its body is mostly blue, like the host’s national team shirt and its name is a portmanteau of “football” and the ending “-ix” from the popular Astérix comic strip. Other proposed names were “Raffy”, “Houpi” and “Gallik”.

Ato, Kaz and Nik (The Spheriks), 2002Orange, purple and blue, the 2002 mascot(s) were futuristic, computer-generated creatures. Collectively members of a team of “Atmoball” (a fictional football-like sport), Ato is the coach while Kaz and Nik are players. The three individual names were selected from shortlists by users on the Internet and at McDonald’s outlets in the host countries.

Goleo VI, 2006We’re sure you remember Goleo and Pille! The 2006 competition hosted by Germany saw a lion wearing a Germany shirt with the number 06 and a talking football named Pille as the mascots. Goleo is a portmanteau of the words “goal” and “leo”, the Latin word for lion and in Germany, “Pille” is a colloquial term for a football.

Zakumi, 2010Meet Zakumi, a leopard with green hair who also happens to be this years mascot! Zakumi’s green and gold colors represents South African national sports’ teams colors. His name comes from “ZA”, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for South Africa, and “kumi”, a word that means “ten” in various African languages.

MATCH BALL

TRIVIA

Every four years, we see innovation unlike any other on the football pitch and the evolution of the official match ball

over the years stands true to that statement. Living up to their ‘impossible is nothing’ tagline – Adidas is certainly putting their best foot forward this season!

There’s no better time like the present to increase your knowledge on the beautiful game. If you’re wanting to impress

your friends and family while watching the games by bringing up random facts and notes – we’ve got just the thing for you, read on!

Tricolore: France 1998By 1998, FIFA World Cup France was played with a ball which sported the French red-white-blue tri-color. A complete departure from the old traditional black and white pattern. The first official World Cup colored soccer ball, the TRICOLORE used underglass print technology with a thin layer of syntactic foam.

Jabulani: South Africa 2010Jabulani ushers in some major advances in football technology. As opposed to the flat-paneled molding of previous Adidas footballs, Jabulani comprises eight thermally bonded 3D panels that have been, for the first time ever, spherically molded to make this ball a perfectly round football that is more accurate than ever before!

Fevernova TM: Korea/Japan 2002For FIFA World Cup Korea Japan, 2002, Adidas created a new ball made up of thicker inner layers to increase the accuracy of the ball in flight. The Adidas Fevernova was the first World Cup Match Ball since 1978 to break with the traditional Tango design introduced in 1978.

Teamgeist: Germany 2006The fine gold accents along the rounded propellers are inspired by the golden FIFA World Cup Trophy. The revolutionary new panel shape was designed to minimize corners and to create a more homogeneous system in terms of performance and look. The radiant lines of the graphics surrounding the propeller shape symbolize movement and energy.

Only player to have scored a hat-trick in successive tournaments:Gabriel Batistuta of Argentina on 21/06/1994 and on 21/06/1998.

Fastest goal:By Turkey’s Hakan Sukur after 11 seconds in the third-place play-off match against South Korea on 29/6/02.

First player to take penalty shootout in World Cup finals:Alain Giresse of France, who scored the first ever penalty in a shootout where France lost 4:5 to West Germany in the semi-final on 8 July 1982.

When was the term ‘group of death’ first used:The term ‘group of death’ was used by the Mexican press to describe Group 3 of WC 1970, which consisted of England (reigning champions), Brazil (champions in 1958 & 1962), Czechoslovakia (finalists 1962) and Rumania. As a result, Rumania & Czechoslovakia ‘died’ in the first round while Brazil won all the matches and became champions.

Why is vitamin D important?Vitamin D is unique and in a class by itself since it acts as a hormone that targets numerous genes in the body. Along with calcium, vitamin D is essential for bone health because it is necessary for proper absorption of calcium.

How much vitamin D do I need? This varies from person to person as it depends on not only your age, but your body weight, body fat percentage, area where you live, colour of your skin, your use of sunblock, how much sun exposure you’re getting and the current condition of your health too.

What is the best and most accessible source of vitamin D?The sun. However, we have all been told to stay out of the sun, or, if we do head outdoors at any time of the year, be sure to be lathered with sunscreen. Because the sun allows our skin to synthesize vitamin D, the best recommendation is if you do go out in the sun, do so responsibly. For example, expose arms, legs and face for about 15 minutes and then apply sunscreen. On the other hand, if one regularly avoids sun exposure, it is recommended that at least 5,000 IU of supplemental vitamin D3 (or cholecalciferol, the active form of vitamin D) be taken daily.

Although laying out under the sun isn’t top on our priority list with our Malaysian weather – it is actually one of the most effective ways to get your daily dose of vitamin D. If you think that vitamin D is just another vitamin we need for good health, think again! According to Michael Holick from Boston University Medical Center, deficiency of vitamin D is a global health problem and affects everyone no matter the age. What does that mean for you? Read on and find out!

How do I know if I am Vitamin D deficient? There is no way to tell unless you get a specific blood test, a 25-hydroxy-vitamin D test, by your doctor. This is important to specify with your doctor since many physicians order the wrong test! For your information, levels should be above 50 nanograms (ng)/milliliter (ml) for both children and adults. If they fall below this level, supplemental vitamin D at the appropriate dosage can help and should be discussed with your doctor.

ToxicityNot to worry, as it is not an issue here. Vitamin D is one of the least toxic substances to humans. An overdose may occur if one takes more than 100 times the daily Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D, or 400 IU/day for most adults, for months on end.

Wrap UpVitamin D has shown to be effective for a wide range of health conditions. Currently, the RDA for most adults is only 400 IU/day. However, it is recommended that all healthy adults get a minimum of 1,000 IU/day of vitamin D. To obtain this amount, a supplement is required especially if one has little or no exposure to the sun. As always be sure to discuss the proper steps you should take with your doctor beforehand!

Lighter Side of Life

Definition of a gooD referee1) Must be fair 2) Must be consistent 3) Must make correct judgements 4) Must be able to stay in control 5) Must award your team at least two penalties and give out two red cards to opposition players

it’s simple really“The rules of soccer are very simple, basically it is this:If it moves, kick it. If it doesn’t move, kick it until it does.”

Dear Sweetheart,

1. Between 11 June and 11 July 2010, you should read the sports section of the newspaper so that you are aware of what is going on regarding the World of Soccer, and that way you will be able to join in the conversations. If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or you will be totally ignored. DO NOT complain about not receiving any attention.

2. During the World Cup, the television is mine, at all times, without any exceptions. If you even look at the remote control, you will lose it (your eye).

3. During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute, unless I require a refill of my drink or something to eat. If you expect me to listen to you talk about your lecturer, friends or your assignments - it won’t happen.

4. Please, please, please if you see me upset because my favourite team is losing, DO NOT say “get over it, it’s only a game”, or “don’t worry, they’ll win next time”. If you say these things, you will only make me angrier and in turn I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about football than me.

5. You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk to me during halftime but only when the commercials are on, and only if the half time scores is pleasing to me. In addition, please note I am saying “one” game; hence do not use the World Cup as a nice cheesy excuse to “spend time together”.

6. The replays of the goals are very important. I don’t care if I have seen them or I haven’t seen them, I want to see them again - many times in fact.

7. Tell your friends NOT to have any parties or gatherings that requires my attendance because:

a) I will not go,

b) I will not go, and

c) I will not go.

7. But, if a friend of mine invites us to his house over the weekend to watch a game, we will be there in a flash.

8. The daily World Cup highlights show on TV every night is just as important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying “but you have already seen this, why don’t you change the channel to something we can all watch?” because, the reply will be: “Refer to Rule #2 of this list”.

9. And finally, please save your expressions such as “thank God the World Cup is only once every 4 years”. I am immune to these words, because before and after this comes the Champions League, Premier League, Super 14, Spanish League, KPL, Grand Prix, Tri Nations, etc.

P/S:10. By the way if you get stuck on the road call 999.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

meDical school A medical professor had just finished a lecture on the subject of mental health and started to give an oral quiz to the first year students. Speaking specifically about manic depression, the senior doctor asked, ‘How would you diagnose a patient who walks back and forth screaming at the top of his lungs one minute, then sits in a chair weeping uncontrollably the next?’

A young man in the back of the room raised his hand and answered, “A World Cup football coach, Sir!”.

At one point during a football match, the coach said to one of his young players, ‘Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?’

The little boy nodded. ‘Do you understand that what matters is how we play together as a team?’ The little boy nodded.

‘So, ‘the coach continued, ‘When an offside is given, or a foul is not seen, you don’t argue or swear or attack the referee. Do you understand all that?’

Again the little boy nodded.

‘Good, ‘said the coach, ‘Now go over there and explain it to your mother.’

SoMe SAy…“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death…it is much, much more important than that.”- Bill Shankley

MiSSed iTThe team had lost by one goal and the new £3 million

striker had missed an open goal in the last minute. “I don’t know how I missed it”, he cried, “I could have

kicked myself!”

“Don’t bother”, a team mate replied, “you’d probably miss that too!”

Big game It was a boring Sunday afternoon in the jungle so the Elephants decided to challenge

the Ants to a game of soccer. The game was going well with the Elephants beating the Ants ten goals to nil, when the Ants gained possession.

The Ants’ star player was dribbling the ball towards the Elephants’ goal when the Elephants’ left back came lumbering towards him. The elephant trod on the little ant,

killing him instantly. The referee stopped the game.

“What do you think you’re doing? Do you call that sportsmanship, killing another player?” The elephant replied, “Well, I didn’t mean to kill him -- I was just trying to trip

him up.
