Wake Up and Get Ready to WriteWe write every day in many ways—grocery lists, text messages, emails. These everyday writings occur naturally, yet they make more or less minor differences in the world. But when was the last time you wrote to shape history? To move people to action? To realize a world more perfect than that which might otherwise be? In his keynote, Pick Up the Pen: Writing for Protest, Advocacy, and Change, David uses both humor and heart to challenge you to pick up your pen and make a difference—starting today.

Envisioning Effective Instruction with Debbie MillerAre your students active members of your literacy workshop? Do they sit idly, mindlessly consuming the information you toss their way, or do they take pride and ownership in building the type of workshop environment that works for them? If you’re looking for tips on how to create a classroom culture that thrives on agency, ownership, and engagement—for both you and your students—look no further than Debbie’s morning session, Are Our Workshops More Important Than the Children in Them? Debbie’s guidance in helping you reflect on instructional design will undoubtedly leave you energized and excited to start the school year with a dynamic workshop your students won’t soon forget.

More of Debbie Miller? Let's Do This! In our busy daily schedules, it can be easy to get bogged down in the myriad tasks we must complete in any given school day. We lament about what gets in the way of our students’ learning rather than pausing to consider the vast possibilities present within our students’ academic, social, and emotional capabilities. In Debbie’s afternoon workshop, Let’s Do This! Instilling the Sparks of Agency, Ownership, and Independence Within Children and Ourselves, Debbie invites us to imagine new possibilities regarding what we, and our students, can accomplish within a school year. Debbie will use her years of expertise to help you explore the big ideas of our profession while contemplating “What if?”

Join Jeffrey Wilhelm! Dive Deep and Empower Your TeachingWant to get your students to be more engaged and dive deeper into their reading? Then you don’t want to miss Jeff Wilhelm’s interactive LIM workshops! In Empower Your Teaching: Must Make Moves of Teaching Through Inquiry as Cognitive Apprenticeship, Jeff will share how inquiry/cognitive apprenticeship is THE model of instruction for developing motivation, engagement, joy, and deep expertise, focusing on the EMPOWER method to plan both units and lessons that will engage and assist students to deep reading, composing and learning! Then Jeff will explore how to motivate and assist students to more expertly read both fiction and nonfiction texts by using "readers rules of notice" in Diving Deep Into Reading: Using Readers Rules of Notice to

Develop Expertise. Learn how to use visual texts, thinking aloud, questioning, practicing in miniature, and micro-writing to help students learn to notice textual topics, key details, genre and text structure, and how to interpret how textual cues work together to express main ideas and effects.

Picture Book Author and Illustrator IdolWhere do authors find inspiration for their ideas? If you’ve ever wondered about the answer to that question, you’re not alone! When Bob Shea, author and illustrator of over a dozen picture books, speaks to children around the country, many of them ask him that very same question. Throughout his travels, he’s discovered that it’s a question many adults would like answered as well! In his session entitled Where Do Ideas Come From?, Bob will explore the development and nurturing of an idea through the use of his trademark humor and wit. You’ll be sure to leave laughing and inspired by this popular picture book icon!

Award-Winning Author Extraordinaire Pam Muñoz Ryan’s path to becoming the award-winning author that she is today is one all audiences need to hear. In her keynote address, Beginnings, Belongings, and Her Journey to Books, Pam will captivate our LIM audience by exploring her declaration: “I am a reader, writer, author, and pilgrim. Every book is a journey.” From her past to her present, Pam’s story as a reader and writer is one teachers and administrators will want to share with their students and colleagues, inspiring them to take their own journeys through books, ultimately prompting them to want to turn the page.

BOOKS! BOOKS! BOOKS!

Our book talking sessions at Literacy in Motion are a consistently huge draw! Join Karen Biggs-Tucker as she highlights the hot new titles for readers in grades 4-12 while Megan Truax shines a sunny spotlight on the best new books for the K-3 classroom teachers. Expanded bookstore hours allow you to get your hands on these books right away!

Michele Byrne

With hundreds of professional books published each year, it is hard for educators to keep up. Some may even be hesitant to explore new titles because they don’t want to spend their precious “free” time with texts that will not directly impact their students, classroom,or school. In this session, our team will highlight some of the best professional texts published in the past year as well as how those texts positively impacted teaching and learning.

Gravity Goldberg... Getting to What Matters MostIn this workshop, 5 Teacher Decisions That Matter Most, Gravity Goldberg will help us filter through the 2,000 decisions we make every day and avoid decision-fatigue by focusing on the ones that matter most. Gravity will explain which five decisions about the teaching of reading really impact

student growth and which ones just don't. She will share videos and student work samples that demonstrate how lesson ideas come to life in the classroom when teaching both fiction and nonfiction reading. You will leave here with more confidence and being empowered to trust your decision-making process!

And the Research Suggests...

Gravity Goldberg

As a new addition to Literacy in Motion this year, our Poster Session will highlight the research that is one of the foundations of Judson's graduate programs in literacy. The most recent research produced by the candidates of the fourth cohort in our Doctoral Program in Literacy (DLIT) will be presented through posters. Presenters will share the background, methods, and results of a dissertation study, as well as how this research impacts the field of education. Literacy in Motion attendees are invited to take the first look at these newly completed dissertations and to participate by asking questions, offering constructive feedback, and pushing the boundaries of these emerging research lines.

Wondering About…

…Handouts? Every effort is made to secure from our speakers any handouts pertinent to their presentations at the Literacy in Motion Conference. One of the ways we are able to keep the cost of the conference so reasonable is by posting handouts on the conference website main page for interested participants. Handouts are posted as soon as we receive them from our speakers and remain up for two weeks following the conference.

...Graduate Credit? Graduate credit (1-3 hours) is available for the Literacy in Motion Conference. All pertinent information for registering and explanations of requirements can be accessed via the main conference page at www.JudsonU.edu/LiteracyInMotion.
