Xaverian Missionaries Annual

Mission Festival It’s that time again – church festival season 2018. The Xaverian Fathers are preparing for their annual Mission Festival. This year’s festival will take place the weekend of June 23 and 24. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. There will be a 10:30am Outdoor Mass on the mission grounds on Sunday morning, June 24.

One of our most popular attractions and major income producers at the festival is the HUGE rummage sale. Please search your basements, attics and garages – maybe ask some friends to do the same – for items you may no longer need or want, and consider donating them to this great cause. They only ask the items be clean and have resale value. Please, no electronics or adult clothing.

You may bring all items to the mission on Xavier Drive at 51st Street just north of Rawson Avenue anytime during daylight hours. If you need help with larger items, or if you have questions, please call Linda at the mission office at 414-421-0831.

Also, volunteer help is always appreciated – before, during and after the festival dates. If you are able to help in ANY WAY, again, please call Linda for information. The pay – not great, but the benefits – priceless!! Your support will, literally, reach “to the ends of the Earth.”

Are you able to listen to the readings every Sunday and understand what you are hearing? I think we have some wonderful “Lectors” who read in our parish. I can understand them clearly and they do a great job with the right emphasis when it is needed. Sometimes I go to other churches and it seems the readings are in a monotone. That makes it hard to follow and understand. Our Priests and Deacon also enunciate the Gospels so we can understand. Some churches put missals in their pews that have the Sunday readings and along with a simple Psalm that is usually in chant form. I admit I am not a fan of these. The Psalm in the missals is new every week and it is a rare cantor that does a good job in chanting the verses. It also feels like people read ahead or along with the Lector and Priest and look for their mistakes. I much prefer looking at the Lector and Priest when they proclaim the Readings and the Gospel. I subscribe to “Give Us This Day” that has the daily Mass readings. I don’t go to Mass every day but on days I do go I will often read the Readings and Gospel before Mass. Then when I hear it proclaimed it sees to have added meaning and value. ( Other popular daily prayer and Mass readings magazines are “Magnificat” and “The Word Among Us”.) It is taking me a long time to get to what I wanted to write about. On Wed. May 30 I was at Tudor Oaks and the Gospel [Mark 10:32-45]

caught my attention. This is the Gospel for Wednesday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time in both Years 1 & 2. A shorter version of this reading is used on the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B (on Oct. 21 this year.) In the weekday reading Jesus tells the Twelve how he is going to be put to death. The disciples don’t seem to get His message but instead remember that Jesus tells them He will live in glory with His Father. James and John instead ask Jesus, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” Their arrogance struck me as so common for us human beings. Jesus’s response was “whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” We only hear Jesus’s response once every 3 years on Sunday. Most of us are not that humble but dream of being at the top of our business or lauded for our work. What an impressive lesson. Be humble! Serve others!

NGÀY 17 THÁNG 6 NĂM 2018 · CHÚA NHẬT THỨ 11 MÙA QUANH NĂM TRANG 6

“Người kia đã gieo hạt xuống đất, rồi đi ngủ, hạt giống mọc lên thế

nào người đó cũng không hay biết”

Mc 4, 26-34

Thánh lễ đồng tế sẽ do Đức Tổng Giám Mục Jerome chủ tế.
