procedures. The most recent School Safety, Codes and Security Workshop report from theNational Fire Protection Association is now available. The workshop attemptedto identify and understand the sometimes competing objectives of fire andsecurity safety. United with the expectations of law enforcement and firedepartment personnel, who often arrive at the height of or just after an event hasended, the workshop took stock of the current building, life safety, and firecodes provisions for egress; how those in the security industry view schoolsafety; how school systems deal with their own internal procedures; and whatprotocols are or should be in place for the first responder community. Facts andfigures from the workshop:

Half of the fires in buildings that house preschool through grade 12 areintentionally set.About threequarters (71%) of the structure fires occurring in educationalproperties involve schools providing preschool through highschooleducation. An estimated 4,060 structure fires involving preschool through grade 12buildings were reported per year in 20072011.
