Ceramic Valley is home to the worldfamous “Old Imari.” It covers an areafrom Nishi Arita, across to Takeo, anddown through Ureshino. Ceramics arestill produced, strongly influenced bycenturies of history. The same area isone of the major hot spring resortregions in Japan. It also offers a vastreservoir of culture that can be seen inthe form of the many shrines, temples, and local festivals.
Four hundred yeaers ago, Arita, nowknown as the birthplace of Japaneseporcelain, was only a small village in apocket of the hills. It was Ri Sampei, aKorean potter, who started the historyand tradition of the porcelain industryin Arita. He was originally brought hereby Lord Naoshige Nabeshima. Ri Sampeiand his colleagues discovered kaolinsuitable for porcelain in Izumiyama andthey set a milestone in porcelainproduction by opening a kiln inKamishirakawa Tengudani. Followingthis, more and more kilns came intooperation producing white porcelainglazed with indigo-blue patterns. Aritaflourished as the first porcelainproducer in Japan.
Arita porcelain attracted manyWesterners. The pottery became knownas Imari after the port from which itwas shipped. Ko-Imari, one of the threemain styles of Arita porcelain, ischaracterized by its remarkable glazingand patterns. Red and gold aregenerously used in this style which isfrequently employed for big ornamentalplates and vases. The Kakiemon style, created by Kakiemon, is noted for its
milk - white background and delicatelytinted red patterns. The Kakiemon'selegant ambience as well as thebrilliant Ko-Imari was popular in Europeand largely influenced porcelainmanufacturing technique there.Continue to Okawachiyama the villageof the secret kilns once owned by theFeudal Lord of Nabeshima, is a secludedarea surrounded by beautiful mountainsand country road.
