PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome Back for 2019. This term has certainly had us all here at Penno, hit the ground well and truly running! One of the objectives that the NSW Department of Education (DoE) has included in our strategic plan is that “every student will be known, valued and cared for”. In 2018, that is exactly what the Pennant Hills High School community excelled at - amidst significant challenges, and in 2019 we will continue to live out and achieve this goal.
2018 HSC Results Congratulations once again to the Class of 2018 on their excellent Higher School Certificate (HSC) results. They attained 82 Band 6 / E4 results and a large number of students were pre offered places at their University of choice.
Congratulations to Dongchan who has been confirmed as DUX of our school with an ATAR of 99.60. Congratulations also to Dongchan and Liam for achieving a Band 6 Result in their best 10 Units and being placed on the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) All Rounder List .
Congratulations to Aryan and Patrick who both appeared on NESA’s Top Achievers List for placing 4th in the State for Hindi Continuers and 5th in the State for Industrial Technology - Timber respectively.
The Class of 2018 achieved 18 ATAR results above 90 which equates to approximately 15% of the cohort who presented for the HSC with an ATAR program of study. They should be proud of the work ethic they established to achieve these results and we look forward to celebrating with them at the High Achiever’s Assembly next Thursday 14 February 2019, in the MPC.
Our Year 12, 2019 cohort and I have already been in discussion about where the bar has been set and how they might not only reach this bar, but exceed it. I look forward to watching their progress throughout the year, as they work together to foster a healthy, positive and competitive learning environment that replicates our Penno Pride.
Welcome to Year 7, New Students and New Staff A warm welcome to our new students including the Year 7 cohort. We look forward to a positive and engaging partnership as we work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for your education and more!
Welcome also to our new staff who have joined us for 2019. They are:
Ms Kathy McIntosh - Head Teacher, Small Learning Lab Mr Tim Fulton - School Psychologist, Counselling Team Ms Tracey Tazewell - CAPA Faculty Ms Michelle Green - English Faculty Mr Niall O’Brien - HSIE Faculty Ms Manbina Singh - Mathematics Faculty Mr Nicholas Stamatis - PDHPE Faculty Ms Karleen Newton - Science Faculty Mr Geoff Smith - Science/Agriculture Faculty Mr Ben Stewart - Industrial Arts Faculty Mr Damian Zarb - Home Economics Faculty Ms Darshi Dona - Home Economics Faculty Ms Helen Lee - Special Education Faculty Ms Zoe Cosgrove - SLSO Learning and Support Ms Bharwani Tharmendran - SLSO Learning and Support Ms Adrienne Wardrop - SLSO Learning and Support Ms Leigh Weinberg - SLSO Learning and Support Mr Nicholas Bassett - Farm Assistant
I look forward to working with all staff for the betterment of our students and school community.
This year we welcome Mr Richard Williams, Head Teacher English into the role of Relieving Deputy Principal. Mr Williams will replace Miss Amanda De Carli, who has been appointed to Prairiewood High School through an Expression of Interest process. Congratulations to Mr David Leys who will relieve in the role of Head Teacher English for 2019.
Year 7 Camp and Welcome BBQ I am pleased to inform you that our new Year 7 students have all settled very quickly into high school life. They have been working closely with their teachers and Peer Support Leaders to make this important transition in their formal educational journey, a happy and positive one.
Part of their transition process was the Year 7 Camp which was held at Vision Valley this week. Mr Lali Gill, Year Advisor was very pleased with the proceedings and both students and staff had a fantastic time. Students were faced with challenges that pushed them outside their comfort zones and were successful in overcoming their fears, as well as making lots of potential lifelong friends.
Thank you to Mr Gill for his excellent organisational skills, Mrs Louis and our School Administrative Staff for their assistance before, during and after the event, and the dedicated staff who accompanied our students on camp. The commitment and dedication of our staff ensures that we are able to continue to provide important and successful learning opportunities for all students.
Year 7 families are invited to our Annual Year 7 Welcome BBQ scheduled for next Tuesday 12 February from 4.00pm - 6.00pm on the lawn outside the MPC. The event is well attended by all staff including Head Teachers, Deputy Principals and myself and is a wonderful opportunity to put names to faces. I look forward to seeing you all there.
Whole School Annual Swimming Carnival A reminder our Swimming Carnival is scheduled for next Wednesday 13 February at Hornsby Aquatic Centre. Notes were sent home last year and all permission notes should now be received. I am looking forward to fantastic weather and some great performances in the pool from our students. Perhaps the senior students’ relay team might even get close to the staff team this year….. or not.
Music Camp and Concert The CAPA Faculty is busily preparing to send off 100 plus students to our annual Music Camp. The camp is a fantastic experience for the students involved and a further demonstration of the excellent co-curricular opportunities that Pennant Hills High School is committed to providing for our students. The Music Camp Concert will be held at the MPC on Wednesday 13 February. All families are invited to attend what promises to be an entertaining night.
School Contributions Invoices for School Contributions will be sent out in the next few weeks. Contributions for student elective subjects are essential for the purchase of consumables, while the General Contribution supports a variety of student programs and needs, including the purchase of the most appropriate texts and resources to support student learning. The invoices will also include the P&C Contribution. Our P&C do not engage in significant fund raising activities. Our school community determined the best way to support resources for students was via a levy rather than multiple fundraising activities throughout the year. This policy has served the P&C and in turn our school very well and I ask you to continue to support this worthy cause. The education of our students is of the utmost priority and a contribution to that end is greatly appreciated. We continue to be grateful to our hard-working P&C for their support.
Peak Hill Central School (PHCS) Pizza Oven News I was thrilled to receive an email from our friends at PHCS about their new entertaining space which includes the pizza oven we donated to them last year. Please read the excerpt from their newsletter on page 10 of this publication.
I look forward to a successful and productive 2019.
Ross Warren, Principal

AN EXCERPT FROM THE NEWSLETTER OF PEAK HILL CENTRAL SCHOOL
Double the celebration @PHCS today!
Finishing on an incredibly perfect 100% attendance rate for 2018, is one of the newly elected School Captains for 2019, Lauren. The staff and school community would like to commend Lauren on her achievements this year. Her contribution to PHCS as a student role model, is a credit to both her and her family.
Staff and students celebrated with Lauren today, by hosting a pizza party at morning tea. The students thoroughly enjoyed the delicious pizza which was served courtesy of an extremely generous donation from the Principal, Staff and Students at Pennant Hills High School. Today students had a taste of the new entertaining space, pizza oven, shade trees and shades that are taking shape outside the current Trade Training Centre. Students have made plans to further develop this area to provide a new hospitality and entertaining space for our School Community in 2019.
A sincere thank you to Pennant Hills High School for your generous support of our very appreciative school.
STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR FEBRUARY: USEFUL HANDOUTS AND PLANNERS
Just a reminder that our school subscribes to the study skills website www.studyskillshandbook.com.au which means that all parents and students at the school can access the site at school and at home. Please take some time this week to log in and have a look.
This is a website with units of work on different study skills topics, looking at how students can improve their results as well as other resources and planning templates to make dealing with schoolwork easer. On the THINGS TO PRINT page at the top of the home page there are many useful handouts. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see an alphabetical list.
One of these is the ‘Top Tips For Parents’ handout. Some examples of the types of tips on this handout are as follows: It is a great idea for students to set up a folder for each subject that stays at home, somewhere to file away past tests, assignments, completed topics and to keep everything together for that subject; Each night students should work on homework first, then assignments or test preparation. After this students need to look for other things they can do to enhance their understanding of their subjects, such as making study notes, doing extra questions, revising earlier topics; The best way to deal with distractions is to work in half hour blocks with no distractions during this time. This means during the half hour blocks allocated to schoolwork, no social media etc. not for the whole night, just for those half hour blocks; One of the biggest mistakes students make is leaving their study notes until just before their exams. One of the best habits students can get into is doing their study notes throughout the year, at the end of each topic is a good time to do this. Whenever students don’t have much homework, they should be working on study notes.
The HELP guides on the Things to Print page are also useful resources. Each is a 10 page booklet that targets specific areas. There is a great one for students starting Year 7 and another for those starting Year 11. For students a very useful handout is the term planner. It is a great idea at the start of every term to print off the term planner (or print out 4 for the year). Simply fill in the due dates for the term as you find out about them, and place the term planner somewhere visible at home – for example above your desk on a noticeboard. Highlight tests in one colour and assignments in another colour so they stand out clearly. Cross off each day as you go, so you have a clear picture of how the work is spread out over the term and how long until things are due.
Writing these due dates in your diary as well is essential of course, but it does not give you the overall picture like a term planner does. This is a good thing to do at the start of every term right from the start of secondary school through to the end (and beyond to university as well!).

CARING FOR OUR STUDENTS
From time to time it will be necessary for students to leave school during the school day. Whilst these instances should be kept to an absolute minimum, we understand that at times they will be unavoidable.
If you know in advance that your student will need to leave school early, please send a signed note which they should present to Student Reception at the start of the school day, so a Leave Pass can be prepared. Students holding a Leave Pass are free to leave the school grounds at the designated time.
If a student needs to leave unexpectedly during the day, to ensure their safety and security, our staff are obliged to ask for ID from the person coming to collect them. Parents should ensure that they (or their approved representative) bring some form of photo ID if they are collecting their student without prior written advice to the school.
BYOD INFORMATION
Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD, is a technological trend in education and in the corporate world. It recognises that technology and choices about technology are very much personal and it is designed to give you, as students and families, freedom to make technology choices that suit you and all your circumstances.
Key BYOD points:
BYOD devices should not be only considered as teacher directed learning tools but also as student initiated learning and research tools.
All BYOD devices must support 5 GHz Wireless N to be able to connect to the DEC wireless network. If your device does not support this standard, a wireless USB adaptor can be used to gain access. The adaptor must support 5 GHz Wireless N to connect.
BYOD devices must be registered with the IT Department. This can be done by bringing the device and completed BYOD Student Agreement form to the IT Support Office (available on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday). The device will be added to the DEC wireless network for Internet access. The BYOD Student Agreement is available at student reception in the front office or on the school website.
The IT Support Department will only provide advice on the best way to proceed with any purchasing or troubleshooting request. The IT Department cannot and will not install any software onto a student’s device. All software is the responsibility of the student and is licensed to the student.
Free BYOD software such as Adobe CC (Photoshop, etc.) are available at: http://nsw-students.onthehub.com/WebStore/Welcome.aspx for Windows and MacOS computers. Students, using Adobe CC will need to update their licence annually and will therefore be able to do this as long as they remain public school students. They will also be required to create an Adobe ID account, which for students under the age of 13, will require the permission and assistance of their parent/guardian.
Additionally, Microsoft Office 365 (5 user licence) is available for all NSW DEC students. See below for details. It is best to download this outside school hours and at home. For more information about BYOD, see the BYOD section under the Learning at our school tab on the school website.

WHAT IS A SCHOOL OR CHILD/YOUTH OPAL CARD?
The School Opal card is a free travel or discounted travel Opal card to help eligible students get to and from school. It is only valid for approved travel on school days between your home and school with restricted hours, on the mode(s) of travel specified in the original application.
For travel outside of school, for personal travel or if ineligible for a School Opal card, students aged 4-15 inclusive should use a Child/Youth Opal card.
For students 16 years or older, a Concession Fare Opal card is used and a NSW/ACT Senior Secondary School Concession Card must be carried for proof of enrolment. The card must have sufficient balance on it for the intended travel.
Tap on and off, every time to validate your trip. At the start of each trip, tap on by placing your Opal card on an Opal card reader located at the entrance of the bus. At the end of the trip, tap off by placing your Opal card on an Opal reader again.
Opal card holders must always tap on and off for each trip and each transport mode used during their journey.
If an error message displays when tapping on or off, students must take a note of the error code and contact Opal Customer Care for assistance.
No tap on and off, no bus services Although some might have a free pass, all students must tap on and tap off, so we understand customer travel patterns and can adjust the services provided if necessary. If students do not tap on and off, services may be withdrawn due to the lack of recorded patronage, or redirected to other schools where the demand is higher.
Any lost, stolen, faulty or damaged Opal cards must be reported online immediately. While waiting for a replacement card, students must use a Child/Youth Opal card to travel.
Your Opal Customer Care Useful Contacts Call 13 67 25 (13 OPAL) or visit opal.com.au (24 hours, 7 days): Access Opal School or Opal Child/Youth eligibility criteria, Apply for an Opal card, Register a Child/Youth Opal card, view balance or top-up credit, Report an Opal card error message when tapping on/off, Update a student profile if details have changed (e.g.: school, home address), Report a lost/stolen, faulty or damaged Opal card, Order a replacement Opal card.
